A look at the popular slogans of the Indian elections
'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan'
'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan', the slogan was coined by the second Prime Minister of India, Lal Bahadur Shastri to cheer the people during the severe food crisis that hit the country during his tenure.
After Shastri became the PM, India was attacked by Pakistan. The war led to a severe shortage of foodgrains in the country. Following this, the then prime minister gave the slogan Jai Jawan Jai Kisan to support the soldiers and the farmers.
'Garibi Hatao'
Garibi Hatao was the theme and slogan of Indira Gandhi's 1971 election campaign.
The slogan and the proposed anti-poverty program were designed to gain the support of the rural and urban poor.
'Mile Mulayam-Kanshiram, Hawa Hogaye Jai Shri Ram'
The slogan came up by the alliance between the Mulayam Singh’s Samajwadi Party and Kanshi Ram’s Bahujan Samaj Party against the BJP’s Ram Mandir campaign after the demolition of the Babri Masjid.
The SP-BSP coalition won the UP assembly elections in 1993.
'Ab Ki Bari, Atal Bihari'
This was the Bharatiya Janata Party’s election campaign slogan in 1996 as it looked to defeat the Congress Party.
BJP's 2014 general elections slogan 'Ab ki baar, Modi sarkar' was also based along the lines of this slogan.
'Abki Baar, Modi Sarkar'
The slogan 'Abki Baar Modi Sarkar' came during the 2014 general elections amid the prevailing 'Modi wave' that led to a huge victory for the BJP led NDA government.
'Kattar Soch Nahi, Yuva Josh'
This slogan came into play during the 2014 general elections campaign by the Congress party.
Congress used this catchphrase to take a dig at their rivals, the Bharatiya Janata Party in the elections.
Paanch Saal Kejriwal; steller electoral debut
On December 4, 2013, the party contested elections for the first time for the Delhi legislative assembly. Sheila Dikshit was defeated by Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi assembly constituency, who had been the Chief Minister of Delhi for three successive terms.
On December 28, 2013, Arvind Kejriwal was first sworn in as the Chief Minister. In February 2014, he resigned from the post and governed Delhi for only 49 days.
'Ab hoga nyay'
The Congress party launched its campaign slogan for Lok Sabha 2019 elections, 'Ab Hoga Nyay', stating that injustice is happening in the country.
The theme song has been written by famous writer Javed Akhtar.
'Fir Ek Baar, Modi Sarkar'
The Bharatiya Janata Party has chosen the slogan 'Phir ek baar Modi sarkar' as its election tagline for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
