A look at PM Narendra Modi's general election campaign

The road to upcoming general elections kicked off with a dinner at Modi's residence in January. The guest list included BJP President Amit Shah, the party's general secretaries, and the partymen in charge of different states. 

On March 16, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged his supporters to take the 'main bhi chowkidar' (I too am watchman) pledge, saying he is not alone in the fight against graft and social evils.

PM Modi also changed his Twitter handle to 'Chowkidar' Narendra Modi. Scores of BJP bigwigs, including party president Amit Shah, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, Foreign minister Sushma Swaraj followed suit. 

BJP is campaigning with Shiv Sena for the election in Maharashtra. While BJP will contest on 25 seats, Shiv Sena will contest on 23 seats.

Although both the parties have been in alliance for past several decades, they broke up in 2014 for a brief time just before the legislative elections in Maharashtra.

BJP demanded a higher share of seats which Shiv Sena was not willing to concede.

PM Modi held back to back rallies in Bihar's Jamui and Gaya. Before his visit to the state, party president Amit Shah also visited the state and address public gatherings at Aurangabad and Nawada. 

National Democratic Alliance had finalised a seat-sharing plan in Bihar under which Janata Dal (United) and BJP will contest on 17 seats each while the Ram Vilas Paswan led Lok Janshakti Party will contest the remaining six seats.

Since the general elections has been announced, PM Modi is trying to do three rallies a day.

On his first day of campaigning, he addressed three rallies in three different states — Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, Rudrapur in Uttarakhand, and Jammu — in one single day.

In Odisha rally, Modi asked people to decide whether they want to choose an honest and principled government committed to the development of all or a corrupt and unprincipled one.

Speaking at tribal-dominated Sundargarh, Modi also said that "This time lotus will bloom in Odisha. The BJP will taste victory. I can say with certainty that a maximum number of lotuses will bloom in the state."

Assembly election in Odisha will be held along with Lok Sabha polls in four phases on April 11, 18, 23 and 29.

In Siliguri, Modi took a sharp attack at the state chief minister Mamata Banerjee saying that she is a 'speed breaker' in the West Bengal's development.  

"Didi (Mamata Banerjee) is a speed breaker in the path of West Bengal's development," Modi said.

"I am waiting for this speed breaker to go so development can gather speed," he added. 

Kicking off his campaign in Arunachal Pradesh for simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, the PM Modi said the state is a "shield for the country with the people zealously guarding the border as sentinels".

During the address, Modi thanked the people of the state for voting the double-engine government of the BJP to power at the centre and the state.

"In the northeast, the lotus first bloomed in Arunachal. It is because of your support, the Centre has been able to bring about development in the state," he said.

Launching the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance in Maharashtra at a public rally, Modi targeted Congress saying that it coined the term 'Hindu terror'.

PM Modi and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray will share the stage at a rally in Maharashtra on Tuesday for the first time after the tie-up of their parties for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

The two leaders will address a public gathering at Ausa in Latur in support of the alliance candidates in that district and Osmanabad, where polling will be held on April 18.

Allaying people's fear on the Citizenship bill, Modi in Assam assured voters saying that it would not harm Assam and northeast, and added, only after necessary investigation and recommendation of the state government can the decision of giving someone citizenship be taken.

Assam to become oil and gas hub of the country with projects worth Rs 14,000 crore completed in the last four years, Modi highlighted.

'In Prime Minister Narendra Modi, people saw the leader they had been waiting for since the last 70 years,' party president Amit Shah in Gandhinagar had said before he filed his nomination papers from the Lok Sabha constituency.

In the second visit to West Bengal on April 7, Modi launched a blistering attack on Mamata Banerjee in Cooch Behar rally. He accused her of supporting those who want two Prime Ministers in the country.

Interestingly, the rally was held at Rash Mela Grounds near the Cooch Behar Palace -- the same venue where West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will address a public meeting on Monday.

Reacting to the stage present on the other side of the ground, Modi said, ''Didi (Mamata Banerjee) is acting like kids. You can’t win elections by acting like kids. The stage you see in front of you is a memorial. It signifies the end of TMC rule in Bengal.''
