6 WWE superstars who could headline Sep 5 SmackDown Episode; 2 shocking returns on cards
The upcoming episode of Friday Night SmackDown (on September 5) in Chicago could be the grandest this year, with several A-listers expected to make their presence felt. Besides, two massive comebacks are also on the cards. Check out the list.
CM Punk
The Best in the World has had enough of Seth Rollins and his wife Becky Lynch, who slapped him left, right and centre during the past episode of Monday Night RAW, fueling a speculated mixed-tag-team match sooner. Punk returns home in Chicago, as he promised earlier, with the reports of a former employee and world champion joining him, spicing things up.
John Cena
The former 17-time WWE Champion, John Cena, is also advertised to appear on this episode of Friday Night SmackDown; reports of this being his last appearance on the TV show have made headlines on social media. Ironically, Cena made his WWE TV debut at the same venue more than two decades ago.
Brock Lesnar
Since returning to the WWE at SummerSlam 2025, shocking the WWE universe, Brock Lesnar is expected to make his presence felt in Chicago, possibly continuing his latest feud with Cena heading into the next PPV (WrestlePalooza) on September 20, in Indianapolis.
Randy Orton and Drew McIntyre
Randy and Drew are also expected to appear on SmackDown, fueling their rivalry following the SummerSlam 2025 matchup. While Randy will remain the crowd favourite, Drew, who is gaining momentum following the attack on Cody Rhodes lately, will keep the massive audience engaged.
AJ Lee
The biggest draw of the night, and hopefully so, would be former Women’s champion and CM Punk’s wife, AJ Lee, who is widely expected to make her return to the WWE after more than ten years. Given how Becky attacked Punk, and he cut a promo with the RAW General Manager behind, hinting at someone's return, AJ coming back would blow the arena off.
