5 standout performers in Bollywood in the first half of 2019

Every year Bollywood churns out multiple talents through the medium of films and web series and each year several unexpected actors register amazing performances, becoming the talk of the town. With half of this year gone by, let us take a look at some actors who managed to stand out with their incredible performances despite the presence of a strong lead.

Vijay Varma in 'Gully Boy'

Vijay Varma had a very humble start in 2012 with his first film 'Chittagong'. Thereafter, he was mostly seen in supporting roles. His major breakthrough came in 2019 with Zoya Akhtar's 'Gully Boy' in which he played the character of Moeen. His character was loved and appreciated by the critics as well as the audience.

His performance not only earned him rave reviews but it also helped him bag two more projects: Mira Nair's 'A Suitable Boy' for BBC and a film 'Hurdang'.

Amrita Singh in 'Badla'

Amrita Singh, who was last seen in Irrfan Khan starrer 'Hindi Medium' delivered another stellar performance in 'Badla'. A distraught mother, whose son goes missing without a trace, she depicted the character of Rani Kaur with so much grace and realism that the audience could feel her pain in the movie hall.

In a film with Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu in the lead roles, Amrita Singh managed to stand her ground. Her character remains etched in our memories till now.

Siddhant Chaturvedi in 'Gully Boy'

The young actor Siddhant Chaturvedi started off his acting career with the web show 'Inside Edge' on Amazon Prime Video. After appearing briefly in multiple commercial advertisements, Siddhant made his presence felt with his first film 'Gully Boy'.

His character, MC Sher was a screen stealer and his brilliant acting helped him score two more movies, both of which will be action films.

Sayani Gupta in 'Article 15'

Actress and model Sayani Gupta has delivered some brilliant performances in the past. However, her most recent film 'Article 15' saw her in a non glamorous avatar. Her character, Gaura, stood out beautifully and she acted as if she had lived through the instances herself.

Despite having such a stellar cast in the film like Ayushmann Khurrana, Kumud Mishra and Manoj Pahwa, Sayani was still able to make a mark for herself.

Sunil Grover in 'Bharat'

After carving a niche for himself on Televsion, comedian-actor Sunil Grover made quite an impression in this year's blockbuster hit 'Bharat'. A Salman Khan starrer is mostly about him but Grover, who plays Vilayti Khan, Bharat's best friend, managed to shine throughout with his pitch perfect performance.

Grover is a seasoned actor- and even though he did not play the lead- his performance stood out the most in the film that had several prominent names.

Notable mentions: Rasika Duggal (Hamid), Abhimanyu Dassani (Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota) & Tabu (De De Pyaar De)

They did not make it to the list simply because they played the lead roles in their respective films. Yet their performances are worthy of a mention.

Rasika Dugal raised the bar of her acting prowess with the film 'Hamid' where she played the role of a Half Widow in Kashmir. Her camaraderie with her young son was the high point of the film.

On the other hand, Debutant Abhimanyu Dasani chose an unconventional Indie as his debut perfomance in 'Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota'. A dollop of nostlagia, with some mind-blowing stunts and a unique storyline, Dasani's performance was praiseworthy.

Meanwhile, Tabu proved yet again that give her any role- she will manage to outshine. In 'De De Pyaar De', Tabu's comic timing was perfect and enhanced the film's narrative to a great extent.
