<p>Eleven serving defence officers and eight others on Thursday sent a legal notice to actors Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna, accusing the Bollywood couple of "playing with the sentiments" of the armed forces by putting up for auction a naval costume from the Hindi film "Rustom".<br />

The group, which also included the wife of a Navy man and seven retired officers, said it was offended that the actors had listed the costume as an "original naval uniform".<br />

"Uniforms resembling those of the armed forces pose a potential threat to national security as the said uniform, insignia and badges could pass for genuine service clothing and can find their way to anti-national elements who can use it to foment trouble," the notice said.<br />

A copy of the notice has also been sent to the auction house Salt Scout and the office of the defence minister.<br />

The group of 19 urged the minister to take action against the actors and to stop the auctioning of the outfit Kumar wore in the 2016 film, a fictional account loosely based on the real-life case of Naval Officer K. M. Nanavati, charged with and then acquitted of killing his wife.<br />

<p>Justice J Chelameswar, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, has written a letter to the Chief Justice of India asking him to convene a meeting of the collegium to urgently forward the name of Uttarakhand Chief Justice KM Joseph as a judge of the apex court to the Centre.</p>

<p>An apex court official said, in his letter sent to the CJI on Wednesday evening, Justice Chelameswar has conveyed that he was reiterating his decision for the elevation of Justice Joseph as the judge of the top court since there was no change in the circumstance that had led the collegium to recommend his name to the government on January 10.<br />
It is also learnt that, Justice Chelameswar, who retires on June 22, has responded to all the points raised in the communication to the CJI by law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad expressing reservations on the elevation of Justice Joseph.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The meeting of the collegium was expected to take place yesterday but Justice Chelameswar was on leave. Besides the CJI and Justice Chelameswar, other members of the collegium are Justices Ranjan Gogoi, MB Lokur and Kurian Joseph.</p>

<p>Justice Kurian Joseph, during his visit to Kerala last week, had also reportedly made it clear that he was in favour of reiterating the recommendation of the collegium on the issue of Uttarakhand Chief Justice Joseph.</p>

<p>Though no official word was there on when the collegium would meet, the official said it is for the CJI to fix the date as there is no other agenda but to discuss the issue of returning the recommendation relating to Justice Joseph to the Centre.</p>

<p>Earlier also, notwithstanding the letters written by the collegium members to the CJI which had come into the public domain, the Centre had disregarded the recommendation about Justice Joseph.</p>

<p>The judge had struck down the order to prohibit/ban the publication and sale of the book by "stifling" the right of freedom and speech and expression guaranteed to the author and the publisher under the Article 19(1) of the Constitution till the final disposal of the suit.</p>

<p>In August last year, a Delhi court had restrained publisher Juggernaut Books from publishing and selling the book titled 'Godman To Tycoon', which was allegedly based on the life of the yoga guru, till further orders.</p>

<p>It had also restrained Amazon India and Flipkart Internet Pvt Ltd from selling the book online and said any pending delivery of the book to buyers be stopped immediately.</p>

<p>The book was published in July last year and authored by journalist Priyanka Pathak Narain, who was represented through advocate Satyajit Sarna in the court.</p>

<p>Ramdev, in his suit, had alleged that the information in the book was false, tended to injure his reputation and led to an inference that the yoga guru had been involved in mischievous and criminal activities to achieve fame and success.&nbsp</p>

<p>The publisher had earlier said that the book was a work of serious journalism. It was the product of over fifty interviews, many of them taped, with Ramdev and key players in his life, including close aides and family members, it had said.</p>

<p>"The book contains a detailed 25-page note on sources that lists the interviews, articles, police reports and RTI replies that are the basis of each chapter," it had said in the statement.&nbsp</p>

<p>The Tripura Police have arrested twenty-four Bangladeshi youth with suspected terror links from the Agartala railway station on Thursday.</p>

<p>The&nbsp;nationals were arrested&nbsp;by the Mobile Task Force (MTF) when they were travelling from Delhi to Agartala in the Tripura Sundari Express.</p>

<p>The MTF conducted a raid at the railway station after receiving inputs.</p>

<p>The arrested nationals were carrying fake Aadhaar cards and none of them had any valid passport. Three among the arrestee had expired Bangladeshi passport.</p>

<p>The MTF Superintendent also said that the arrested nationals may have a possible terror link.</p>

<p>A team of National Investigation Agency will visit Guhawati on Friday to interrogate the youth.</p>

The nationals were arrested by the Mobile Task Force (MTF) when they were travelling from Delhi to Agartala in the Tripura Sundari Express. The MTF conducted a raid at the railway station after receiving inputs. The arrested nationals were carrying fake Aadhaar cards and none of them had any valid passport. Three among the arrestee had expired Bangladeshi passport. The MTF Superintendent also said that the arrested nationals may have a possible terror link. It all depends on who will get how many seats. Our candidate will be Rahul Gandhi,"&nbsp</p>

<p>"He has learnt it from China how to build big projects and showcase them as development. But if you go a bit deeper, there is no development. The Sabarmati river front, the bullet train, the Metro trains are sold as development. But if you go to villages, there is no development. Government schools are shutting down," he alleged.</p>

<p>A Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLA on Wednesday said Lalu Prasad Yadav`s parole has been intentionally delayed by Jharkhand government.</p>

<p>Fodder scam convict Lalu was granted a five-day parole to attend his elder son Tej Pratap Yadav`s wedding.</p>

<p>"Till now, we have no information about his parole. As per the jail guidelines, it is not allowed to exit from the jail after 6 in the evening. So, I think (Jharkhand) government and administration have intentionally delayed his parole," RJD MLA Shakti Singh Yadav told.</p>

<p>He added that "the way government and administration have shown red-tapism, it is a clear indication that they want to demoralise Lalu ji".</p>

<p>Lalu, who has been convicted in three fodder scam cases by a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Ranchi since December last year, is ailing and currently undergoing treatment at Rajendra Institute Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi.</p>

<p>The RJD chief, who has been serving a jail term in Birsa Munda central jail, was admitted to AIIMS on March 29 for specialised treatment.</p>

<p>On April 30, the AIIMS later referred Lalu to RIMS.</p>

<p>The train journey between Dibrugarh and Delhi will be shorter by three hours come year-end, when the railways plans to commission its longest rail-cum-road bridge at Bogibeel in Assam.</p>

<p>Currently, the journey via Guwahati takes around 37 hours. With the 4.94-km-long bridge in place, the journey via Rangia, the regional divisional headquarters of the North East Frontier Railway, the time will be reduced by three hours.</p>

<p>"With the new bridge, new trains will be introduced, which will shorten the journey time. There are difficulties in changing the routes of the existing trains. Thus, we plan to introduce new trains," a senior railway official said.</p>

<p>The bridge will connect eastern Arunachal Pradesh to Upper Assam by cutting down the current distance substantially.</p>

<p>"Instead of going via Tejpur, people can take the bridge. Also, with the bridge, buses will be introduced, autorickshaws and other modes of transport will also thrive. One has to take the ferry now, which takes an hour to cross and that too, shuts at 4 pm every day. The ferry service is also irregular during the monsoon," the official said.</p>

<p>The cost of taking the ferry is Rs 120 per person and ferrying a car costs anywhere between Rs 1,000 and Rs 3,000 for the hour-long journey, the locals said.</p>

<p>With the Bogibeel bridge, it will take around five minutes.</p>

<p>While all the civil work for the bridge would be completed by July, two more months would be needed to finish the electrical and signalling work, Mahender Singh, the chief engineer of the project, said.</p>

<p>By the year-end, the bridge is likely to be ready, officials said, adding that it will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.</p>

<p>The bridge, the second longest in Asia, will have three-lane roads on top and a double-line railway track below.&nbsp</p>

<p>There are 800 registered candidates from unrecognised political parties contesting the polls this year, compared to 832 in 2013, a difference of 32.</p>

<p>Supreme Court judge, Justice DY Chandrachud, the son of late Chief Justice of India YV Chandrachud, on Wednesday recalled a personal experience during the hearing on the Aadhaar issue that his mother, who was suffering for Alzheimer's disease, had faced difficulty in authentication to get pension.</p>

<p>Justice Chandrachud is part of the 5-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, which is hearing a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar scheme and its enabling law of 2016.</p>

<p>During the hearing, the bench, also comprising Justices AK Sikri, AM Khanwilkar and Ashok Bhushan, said Aadhaar authentication failures could create problems for those in need and some solution has to be found to address the issue.</p>

<p>Recalling his experience, Justice Chandrachud said "my mother, who was suffering from Alzheimer's disease, was entitled to family pension being the wife of a former Chief Justice of India (late Justice Y V Chandrachud).</p>

<p>"She had to give a thumb impression for authentication. I recall, every month the bank manager or his representative would come home and affix her thumb print on certain documents and only then could she get the pension", Justice Chandrachud said.</p>

<p>"So it (authentication) is a serious issue. It's not largesse. It is not charity...we have to find answers for these problems," he said, adding that there was a class of needy people who may not get the benefits due to authentication failures.</p>

<p>The top court judge was responding to the arguments of senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for former High Court judge Justice (Retd) K S Puttaswamy, who said a 90-year-old woman suffering from various ailments is being threatened that her bank account could be closed for non-authentication by Aadhaar.</p>

<p>Divan said that through that bank account, she was getting her pension and she uses that money for her treatment as she has no one else to look after her.</p>

<p>"There are numerous cases where the Aadhaar authentication failures of the elderly, people suffering from any disease or physical disability, leads to denial of benefits to those otherwise entitled to it," Diwan said.</p>

<p>He said in many villages, young people have now migrated to cities or nearby towns and only the elderly residing there were dependent on their pension or other grants. But due to Aadhaar authentication failure, they were not getting the benefits.</p>

A portrait, behind its contours, contains a persona that inspires, stimulates and motivates the beholders to emulate the ideals and ideologies that the former represents. The portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah hanging on the walls of the Students Union office in the Aligarh Muslim University, similarly, hides many stories behind the dust of time gathered around it that contains different message to different people.<br />

Muhammad Ali Jinnah is not just another figure lying in the debris of the history, but one who caused the dismemberment of India in order to create a separate nation on religious line. He gave political expression to a dangerous and dysfunctional "two-nation theory", which was long being propagated in-principle by the likes of Md Iqbal and Sir Syyid Ahmad Khan. Finally, through his unfathomable obstinacy and persistence he became successful in creating the theocratic state of Pakistan but not before programming a madness in which nearly 2 millions were killed and 14 millions were displaced permanently for no fault of their own. Those who lived behind, untouched with the ravages of death or displacement, got a permanent scar on their psyche and a pathological divide in their hearts.</p>

<p>While to the Hindus, Jinnah is a villain who divided India, to the Muslims he comes across as the greatest leader, the undisputed <em>Quaid-i-azam</em> who pulled off a valiant coup on the belligerent Hindus led by an 'obstructionist' Gandhi to create Pakistan for the <em>ummah</em>, an act of valiance comparable to none other than the Rashidun caliphs, who expanded the reach of Islam immediately after the Prophet's death.</p>

<p>But Jinnah was not like that, and at least till 1936 he wasn't a Muslim bigot. Jinnah was a free spirit caged within a Muslim body. Born an Ismaili Shia, Jinnah was as much a Muslim as Jawaharlal Nehru was a Hindu. With cigar, wine, western clothes and British mannerism he wasn't someone who fits the bill of a jihadi fighter struggling in the way of Allah for establishing an Islamic state for his followers. He never entertained the obscurantism of Islam or its fanatic traditions.</p>

<p>So, how suddenly Jinnah becomes fanatic? What makes him fall to the notion of partition of a country, in which he lived all through his life, on religious line? The answer lies in two factors.</p>

<p>The first factor that drew him to a separate Muslim state was the fear that the western democracy, as being adopted gradually in India, would be detrimental for the Muslims because of their small population. Constituting less than one third of the total population, Jinnah believed the Muslims would ever remain outnumbered by Hindus in all policy decisions.</p>

<p>Though the idea of a separate Islamic state within India was incubating slowly since the days of ideologues like Sir Saiyyad Ahmad Khan, this idea didn't resonate well with Jinnah, who at best looked for extracting concessions for Muslims from the Congress leaders as well as the British for a bigger pie in the governance within a united India. However, the Government of India Act, 1935, providing 'separate electorates' for Muslims and the subsequent elections of the 1937 proved disastrous for the political ambitions of Jinnah. Whereas the Congress was successful in making governments in eight provinces across India, the Jinnah-led All India Muslim League (AIML) couldn't form government anywhere including Punjab and Bengal, which were Muslim majority states. This exposed him to the realisation that the provision of 'separate electorate' was not working to the benefit of Muslims.</p>

<p>Thus, the developments convinced him that electoral democracy would result into the permanent subjugation of Muslims by the Hindus - a hypothesis that has since been thoroughly and comprehensively defeated in India, which has largely remained successful in ensuring rights and dignity for the minorities over its 70 years of post-Independence existence. The conclusion convinced him on the need and necessity of pitching a political demand for Pakistan.</p>

<p>The second factor was his close association with Muhammad Iqbal, the poet, politician and ideologue who is considered as the "spiritual father of Pakistan" in the 1930s till the latter's death. Through his series of speeches and writings, Iqbal established that Islam had a "legal concept" which was anachronistic with the principles of nationalism or democracy as neither of the two can operate without dividing the community (<em>ummah</em>).<br />

During the period of political vacuum in the IUML, mainly due to the self-imposed exile of Jinnah from India in the first half of 1930s, Iqbal theorised and successfully articulated, what was to be known later as the "Two-Nation Theory" - a political principle of religious exclusivism that holds Muslims as a distinct nation unable to co-exist with any other religious group or community, hence deserving political independence from the Hindus.</p>

<p>Having theorised such a blatant communalist principle, Iqbal set himself on the task of convincing Jinnah to come back to India and take up the leadership of the IUML, as he believed that the latter was the only Muslim in India who possessed the ability to lead the community and to make them join the League. With a series of intense and fruitful correspondences with Jinnah, Iqbal was successful in bringing the former back from London in 1936 to lead the IUML. Thus, appears Jinnah 2.0, thoroughly transformed and wholly steeped into the ideologies of Iqbal, whom he declared as his political mentor.</p>

<p>From the 1937 through the World War II, Jinnah still looked hesitant to ask for partition and wanted to have some kind of rapprochement with the Indian National Congress. However, the subsequent political developments dashed all hopes of Jinnah and he got more and more drawn to the visions of Iqbal. Finally, convinced of the need of Pakistan, Jinnah formally brought up "Pakistan Resolution" for creation of a Muslim state of Pakistan in its Lahore session of 1940 and the IUML adopted the same as its political goal henceforth.</p>

<p>The AMU had become the hotspot of Pakistan movement during this period as Jinnah made multiple visits to the institution all through this period. He was was given a lifetime membership of its student union in 1938.</p>

<p>Thus, the vagaries of electoral democracy and the machinations of Muhammad Iqbal were the two factors that completed the transformation of a secular-liberal Jinnah 1.0 to his 2.0 avatar, which saw a communal and obstinate politician spewing venom against Gandhi and Congress leaders while talking of Pakistan in an uncompromising manner. That's why the Indians, including a majority of Muslims who stayed behind rejecting his flawed theory, loathe him and find his portrait on an Indian university campus shocking.</p>

<p>However, from the Muslim perspective, Jinnah was a savior of Muslims from the 'oppressive' democracy that would have put them under the permanent subjugation of Hindus in an undivided India. He fought the British authorities as well as with the Hindu majority tooth and nail to carve out Pakistan. That's why he is still the hero of a section of Indian Muslims who treat him as an Islamic victor conquering over the Hindu majoritarianism. The portrait hanging in the Students Union office of the AMU is the portrait of Jinnah 2.0 which still finds space in the current Indian political environment.</p>

<p>Thus, Jinnah is a moral leader of those Indian Muslims who look for a dominant political space for themselves in the 21st century India. The Jinnah portrait gives them the inspiration and assures them that it's possible. The chant, '<em>lad ke lenge azadi</em>' (we'll achieve independence by force) reverberating from the walls of the AMU, has its source in that portrait.</p>

<p>Just because the Berlin wall was there since the 1960s didn't mean it couldn't be demolished. Many such mistakes of the history have been rectified in course of time hence the argument that the portrait is there since 1938 is not the raison d'etre for its existence in the university. The portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah in the AMU's Students Union office is nothing but the moral elixir of the aspirational Muslim youths looking for an Islamic icon in India through the leadership vacuum of modern times.</p>

<p>Thus, don't expect the portrait to be taken down from AMU. No wonder, if you find it creeping up many other university walls in India in days to come.</p>

<p>Karnataka election is around the corner and after two days from now, 49.7 million voters of the state will seal the fate of 314 candidates in ballot boxes. But who will be the choice of the people: Siddaramaiah or Yeddyurappa? Congress or BJP? Well, it's a challenging task to judge.</p>

<p>Before arriving at any conclusion, let's look at what works for these parties and what doesn't:</p>

<p>Caste and regional dynamics: Karnataka is majorly divided into five regions - Bengaluru, Coastal Karnataka, Bombay Karnataka, Hyderabad Karnataka, Old Mysuru and Central Karnataka. Each of the regions is dominated by different castes and communities. In 2013, BJP was majorly supported by the middle-class population of Bengaluru where it won 12 out of 28 seats and some Lingayats in Bombay Karnataka where it managed to get hold on 13 seats out of 50. However, maximum number of seats - 31 - in Bombay Karnataka went to Congress. This time, with Yeddyurappa's comeback, who comes from Lingayat community, their support for the party is expected to be much more.</p>

<p>In 2013, BJP performed poorly in Old Mysuru region where it only won four out of 61 seats whereas Congress won 27. Vokkaligas, another major community in Karnataka, is dominant in this region. The votes of this community were divided between BJP, Congress and Janta Dal Secular with JD(S) having a majority. The BJP has tried to play it safe this time by praising JD(S) chief H D Deve Gowda. But will it resonate positively with the Gowdas, only time will tell.</p>

<p>Also, Hyderabad Karnataka region was an area of concern with only five out of 50 seats. This region is dominated by SC/STs and Muslim population. Compared to 2013, BJP is expected to perform better in this area. Also, in the Central Karnataka region, which is dominated by Hindu population, BJP did badly in 2013 by winning just three out of 26 seats but is seen stronger this time as per various reports.</p>

<p>2014 Lok Sabha election: In 2014, BJP won 17 out of 28 Lok Sabha seats in the state which means 61 per cent seats. Going by this logic, BJP might win more than 130 seats in the state assembly in this election. However, the vote share in 2014 was 43.37 per cent, which might not be possible to get this time. But the 2014 election hints towards another important thing - the caste factor. As per a post-poll survey done by Lokniti-CSDS, 62% of upper castes and 63% of Lingayats supported BJP, on the other hand, Muslim, SC/ST and OBC voters supported Congress but not entirely. BJP managed to get 25% of the Muslim votes which forms 12.5% of the state's population. Also, 35% of the SC/ST voters exercised their franchise in favour of BJP which forms around one-fourth population of the state.</p>

<p>Congress, meanwhile, won nine Lok Sabha seats from Karnataka in 2014, 32 per cent of the 28 Lok Sabha seats. The percentage will translate to 72 seats in this assembly election. Going by caste dynamics, the Lokniti-CSDS post-poll survey of 2014 election stated that 68% of Muslims, 58% of STs, 43% of SCs and 44% of other OBCs voted in favour of Congress.</p>

<p>Vote share and polling percentage: The vote share analysis suggests that the Congress has a fixed voter base in the state and there has not been much difference in the 2008 Assembly election results, when Congress won just 80 seats, and 2013 when it won 110 seats. The 2008 vote share was 34.76% as against 2013 when it got 36.59% votes. Also, the 2013 election shows that when people did not vote for BJP, their votes was not transferred to Congress either. Thus, there is a limited scope for Congress to get benefit from their non-traditional voters but BJP has the scope of consolidating the remaining 65% voters which are very unlikely to vote for Congress.</p>

<p>The Narendra Modi impact: The BJP has projected Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a big way. He has addressed a lot of rallies during his campaigning in Karnataka and has also been using the NaMo app to address the voters directly. While the party is confident that 'Modi Magic' will work for it, it is always better to exercise little bit of caution.</p>

<p>Rahul Gandhi and his team: Congress president Rahul Gandhi, though has expressed readiness to become the Prime Minister if given a chance, he has not yet made a strong impact through his campaigning or statements. Moreover, other leaders of his party are risking too much in the poll season with statements like 'Shri Jinnah' and 'Qaid-i-Azam' in honour of the so-called culprit of India-Pakistan partition. These comments do not work well with the people and can cost some seats for Congress in the coming elections.</p>

<p>External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj today came to the rescue of a Kashmiri student residing in the Phillipines but not before pointing out to him that his profile incorrectly stated that he was from "Indian occupied Kashmir".</p>

<p>The student, identifying himself as Sheikh Ateek, had tweeted Sushma Swaraj for help with his passport.</p>

<p>“I m from j&k doing medicine course here in Philippines my passport got damaged i applied for new one 1 month ago i request u plz help me get it as i literally need to go home for medical check up (sic),” he said in a tweet tagging Sushma Swaraj.</p>

<p>"If you are from J&K state, we will definitely help you. But your profile says you are from 'Indian occupied Kashmir'. There is no place like that," Sushma Swaraj wrote.</p>
