The holy month of Ramzan got a wee bit more special for the needy people in Hyderabad. A non-profitable trust in Hyderabad is on a mission to serve Iftar to over 500 poor people every day during the month of Ramadan.

Hyderabad's Zaheer Uddin Khan Memorial Trust also distributes ration to over one thousand poor families who can't afford it.

"In this month of Ramzan we serve food for Iftar to poor people including children from poor families who can't afford it. They come here after their Roza (Fast) and eat. More than 500 poor people visit here daily to consume food. We serve food for all 30 days," Mohammad Azhar, member of Zaheer Uddin Khan Memorial Trust said.

"Our trust also distributes ration to over1000 poor families in Ramzan. We provide all this help from our own income," Azhar added.

"It's very appreciative that they distribute ration to so many families, even I and my family receive ration from this trust and we also come here to consume Iftar food daily during the month of Ramzan," Mohammad Shafi Ulla, a beneficiary of the trust, said. &nbsp

Sterlite is owned by the Vedanta group.&nbsp;

The protests against the plant have been going on for years. In 2013, the Supreme Court ordered the company to pay a Rs 100-crore fine.&nbsp;

The protests against the plant erupted again in February when it announced that it was doubling its capacity.&nbsp;

Tuesday had been the 100th consecutive day of protest.&nbsp;

Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday said that there is an immense investment potential in the northeastern region and stressed on improving connectivity to it.

Addressing the second convocation of National Institute of Technology here, Naidu said though the north-eastern region is endowed with abundant natural resources it has a difficult terrain, dispersed habitations, poor connectivity and inadequate infrastructure which are obstacles in realising its true potential.

Improving connectivity is most important to bring the northeast region into the mainstream, he said adding air connectivity is vital for promoting tourism, business and people-to-people contact.

"We strongly believe that the corridors of connectivity should be converted into corridors of economic growth with a symbiotic market model of development," the Vice-President said.

Naidu said that Nagaland is growing fast and setting up of the NIT is an indication of the growing importance of this region and the knowledge and technical skills acquired by the students will form the main pillars of their professional career.

NIT, Nagaland, is the first centrally funded technical institution in the state.

The Vice-President said the real strength of any academic institute lies in maintaining high standards of excellence through its teaching and top quality research.

The life skills acquired by the students from them and the values of ethics, morality, integrity and compassion are equally important in navigating through the challenges and contribute to building an inclusive New India.

Naidu advised the students to remember that their education does not end with the acquisition of a degree or by securing employment. "Learning is a life-long process and education is meant to enlighten them."

The NIT Nagaland being a technical institute of national importance will play a significant role in filling the industrial gap in Nagaland by bringing in industries, the corporate sector and technocrats from other parts of the country to Nagaland for its societal growth and uplift, he said.&nbsp

Naidu expressed happiness that the state is running the Institute of Communication and Information Technology (ICIT), Mokokchung and School Of Engineering & Technology, Dimapur.&nbsp

"Our mother tongue, the language of home, is the root of life. We must ensure that this foundation is strengthened. If we lose a language we lose an important part of our cultural identity," Naidu added.

Nagaland governor, P B Acharya said getting a degree is not the ultimate goal in life but it should serve as a catalyst for pursuing further knowledge.

The actor said he once ended up spending a night under the statue of Mahatma Gandhi with Sunil Dutt and three other stalwarts of the industry in 1993, during the Mumbai riots.

Five people including me, Dutt sahab, Yash Chopra ji, Johnny Walker and a producer were there on the first night of protest." 
 
Calling the time spent with the legends as memorable, the'Dangal' star said they ended up sharing stories about their careers. 
 
"I was listening to the stories (about the) career of Dutt sahab, Yash ji and Johnny Walker... It was a wonderful time. It was a memorable night for me under the statue. By the next evening, the CM took some action and things went to normal." 
 
The actor, who has completed 30 years in Hindi cinema, is busy working on his next big release 'Thugs of Hindostan', scheduled to arrive in theatres in December.&nbsp;

Speaking to PTI, State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said the ties between the US and India had never been stronger or better.&nbsp;

She was responding to questions on the status of India-US relationship amidst recent trade disputes between the two countries and New Delhi being caught in the crossfire of American sanctions against Russia and Iran.

US President Donald Trump has signed a law, 'The Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act', CAATSA, imposing sanctions on Russia, Iran and North Korea. The Section 231 of the CAATSA mandates secondary sanctions on those who conduct significant transactions with the Russian defence and intelligence sectors.

"The US-India partnership is rooted in shared democratic values and a commitment to a rules-based order," Nauert said.&nbsp;

"We support India's emergence as a leading global power and as a key partner in our efforts to ensure that the Indo-Pacific is a region of peace, stability, and growing prosperity," she said.

According to a second State Department spokesperson, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defence Secretary Jim Mattis were looking forward to hosting their counterparts for the first 'India-US 2+2 Dialogue' this year in Washington.&nbsp;

Dates of the dialogue are yet to be announced. It was initially scheduled for mid-April but was postponed after Trump fired Rex Tillerson as the Secretary of State.&nbsp;

The Indian delegation would be led by the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and the Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

"This engagement will support our efforts to increase diplomatic, security, and military cooperation with India to confront our most pressing global challenges, from Afghanistan and North Korea to the threat of terrorism," the second State Department Spokesperson told PTI.

"We are also focused on strengthening our economic ties, including increasing two-way trade, which has more than doubled over the last decade to roughly USD 115 billion in 2016," the official said.

The official said the Trump administration was trying to ensure that bilateral trade was "fair and reciprocal" and that US&nbsp;Companies have a level playing field in India.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi will visit Piplya Mandi village near Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh on June 6, the first death anniversary of six farmers who were killed in police firing during a protest there last year.

During his visit, Gandhi is will hold a condolence meeting-cum-rally, the Congress said on Wednesday.

The party, however, alleged that the district administration has given permission to the event by imposing 19 different conditions, one of which asks Gandhi not to make a "provocative" speech.

The opposition party alleged that the BJP-led government in Madhya Pradesh wanted to disturb Gandhi's event through such conditions.

When asked, the district administration, however, said it was in the process of "amending" its previous order (in which the conditions were set).

The event is being seen as the launch of Congress's poll campaign in the state, which will witness the Assembly polls later this year.

"Rahulji is coming here to condole the deaths of six farmers at Pipliya Mandi, the epicentre of last year's farmers' unrest," MP Congress chief spokesperson Manak Agrawal said.

One lakh people are expected to take part in the meeting, he added.

Sharing a copy of the district administration's permission letter, Congress spokesperson Pankaj Chaturvedi said, "The district administration has given its nod to the event with certain conditions like the maximum size of the tent spread for the rally can't be more than 15X15 feet, no loudspeakers above 10 decibel limit."

The letter also reads that the organisers shall be held responsible if the vehicles of anyone participating in the rally are stolen, he said, adding that "besides, the Congress was also asked to arrange for the security of the event".

"One of the conditions also says that the Congress chief should not make any provocative speech," Chaturvedi said.

He alleged that imposing such conditions was a deliberate attempt to stop Gandhi from reaching out to people.

MP Congress chief Kamal Nath in a tweet said, "The Shivraj Singh government, which did not allow Rahul ji to enter Mandsaur following the farmers' killing, again wants to disturb Rahul ji's meeting of June 6 and muzzle the voice of farmers by laying the conditions."

"Will the same conditions be laid for the meetings of Modi ji and all the BJP leaders in future?" he asked.

When contacted, district collector O P Shrivastava said, "We are amending the previous order related to the Congress event. Under the revised order, they can use the site as per their needs."

Tehsildar of the Malhargarh area of the district, Parasmal Kunhara said permission for the Congress rally was granted on four hectares of land.&nbsp

"They can use the land as per their wish. The conditions were inadvertently pasted on the order earlier," he said.&nbsp

Superintendent of plice Manoj Kumar Singh said the police would make security arrangements for the event.

"Holding a public meeting is their constitutional right. We will make all arrangements to maintain law and order. We have already detained 350 habitual offenders and criminals in view of this programme and such action is going to continue," he said.

Thirteen-year-old Shivpaul was playing with his younger brother Krishan Lal Sharma when a Pakistani mortar shell exploded inside their house in Samba sector of Jammu and Kashmir. 
Recuperating at the Government Medical College (GMC) hospital here Shivpaul asks only one question - about the well being of his brother. Ten-year-old Krishan Lal Sharma, however, was not as fortunate as his elder sibling. He died on the spot.

Their mother Champa was being treated at a local hospital.

In the GMC hospital emergency ward, close to where Shivpaul was recovering, 21-year-old Pooja, wife of an Army jawan, and her two-year-old son too were battling splinter injuries.

They were preparing to flee their home for safety when a shell tore through the roof and exploded in their bed room in the early hours, she said. Her daughter too was injured in the blast, Pooja added.

Eleven seriously injured patients were brought to the GMC hospital since this morning from different sectors as heavy shelling by Pakistani Rangers along the International Border in Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts entered the ninth day.

Five people including the 10-year-old Sharma were killed in the shelling today, raising the death toll in the ongoing skirmishes to twelve including two BSF jawans and an eight-month-old boy.

The state has witnessed a spurt in Pakistani shelling and firing along the IB and the Line of Control (LoC). Over 700 such incidents were reported this year, which have left more than 44 people, including 18 security personnel, dead and scores injured.&nbsp

In another special ward, 50-year-old Santosh Kumari, resident of Londi village of Hiranagar sector of Kathua district, was mourning the loss of her husband.

"It was around 5.30am when a shell landed at our house and exploded with a big bang, critically injuring Devi, her husband Rampaul Sharma and two others besides killing several bovines. We immediately shifted them to a local hospital and after first aid they were brought here. However, Rampaul was declared brought dead," Ashok Kumar Sharma, younger brother of the deceased, told PTI.

A retired Army jawan, Ashok Kumar Sharma, criticised the central government for its "failure to ensure peace on the borders" and said the much-publicised underground bunkers were nothing but an eye-wash.

"Where are the promised bunkers? Our village has not even a single community bunker leave aside the individual bunkers for each family," he said.

The body of his brother was still lying in the hospital as the family could not decide whether to carry it back home for cremation or wait as heavy shelling was still on.

Surinder Singh (45), a resident of Naibasti area of Suchetgarh, said he was moving his cattle out of the firing zone when a shell exploded killing a friend and injuring him.

Singh received multiple splinter injuries in the upper parts of the body and was being attended by his brother, a soldier, and uncle.

BJP MLA Kuldeep Raj who had come to see the injured had to face tough questions from the border residents.

"The education of our children is hit due to closure of schools owing to cross-border firing. We are unable to tend our land properly, attend our cattle and now even we are unable to get brides for our sons as people are reluctant to marry their daughters in our homes due to the fear of Pakistani firing," Darshan Lal, another border resident, said.

Politicians are only visible when they have to seek votes, he claimed adding "nobody cares whether we live or die".

Subhash Chander, who was attending Surinder Singh, said the frequent shelling had made their lives miserable.

"We have witnessed both sides observing the ceasefire in November 2003 and lived a peaceful life for many years before the situation turned ugly especially after 2014," he said.

He said the border residents were unable to perform day to day activities due to the lurking threat of Pakistan shelling.

"The government also backtracked from the promised piece of land at safer places for the border residents. They are responding to Pakistani shelling more fiercely but how is this an answer to our problems. Either they should go for ceasefire or launch an all out attack," Chander said.

Amid the surcharged atmosphere inside the emergency ward, 22-year-old Sunny of Satowali village, who had just been brought by friends, wept inconsolably.

"He has splinter injuries in the arms. But his real pain is that he lost his father Raghaveer Singh, an employee in public health engineering department, in the shelling," one of his friends said.&nbsp

Medical superintendent Dara Singh said over 50 shelling victims had arrived in the hospital over the past one week.&nbsp

"While four of them were declared brought dead, Raghaveer Singh succumbed to injuries today," he said adding half of the injured were discharged after treatment.

 
Among the injured, two persons including a woman were in intensive care unit for multiple splinter injuries in vital organs, he said.

Children bear brunt of Pak hostility at J&K border: 10-year-old killed, 2-year-old battles splinter injuries

Heatwave sweeping most parts of Haryana and Punjab for the past few days continued unabated on Wednesday, with Hisar once again sizzling at 45.1 degrees celsius.

Hisar in Haryana was the hottest place in the two states recording a four degrees above normal maximum temperature, MeT department report said here.

At 42.6 degrees celsius, Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, was hotter by five notches against normal.

Among other places in Haryana, Bhiwani, too, had a hot day at 44.3 degress celsius.

Karnal and Ambala, too, reeled under intense heat wave conditions recording respective maximum temperatures of 42.2 degrees celsius and 42.5 degrees celsius, both four notches above the normal limits.&nbsp

In Punjab, Patiala had a hot day at 43.4 degrees celsius, up four notches against the normal limits.

Ludhiana, too, experienced the hot weather at 43 degrees celsius, up four notches while Amritsar's maximum settled at 41.9 degrees celsius, two more than the normal limit.

According to the MeT forecast, heat wave conditions are likely to continue at many places in Haryana and at a few places in Punjab from May 23-27.

In the police-firing on Tuesday, 11 protesters lost their lives and more than a dozen were left injured. CM Palaniswami has ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident.

The prime Opposition, DMK, has sought his immediate resignation from the post. "This Chief Minister is responsible for something as worse as the Jallianwala Bagh incident," said party's de facto chief MK Stalin.

The Railways will spend around Rs 350 crore to train 1.5 lakh drivers and assistant drivers through virtual reality techniques to bridge the gap between theoretical and practical learning, an official said on Wednesday.

The training will be conducted in 47 centres across zones and the national transporter will soon float a global tender to acquire about 40 simulators for the purpose.

"We spend almost a month in giving drivers on-road training. They learn all the techniques in theory, but through these virtual reality techniques, they will learn how to navigate routes, signals, curves, bridges and any other situation as if they are actually driving a real train," said the senior official of the ministry.

Fitted with computer-generated motion images, the simulator will have a man-machine interface, a host of computers and a video camera to capture the movements of the driver.

It would look like a sophisticated electric locomotive and drivers would feel as if they are steering a train on a specified route.

The motion pictures on the monitor in front of the wheel would keep changing and drivers would feel a flurry of activity around them, such as the passing of other trains on adjacent tracks, people and cattle crossing the tracks and sharp bends.

Some zonal railways have already experimented with simulators. The first one was tried in Vadodara and the second in Vijayawada where assistant driver recruits were trained on the state-of-the-art simulators.

Globally, simulator-based training is being imparted by operators in the US, France and Spain and has emerged as a critical component of crew training for it presents a real-life environment and exposes trainees to unusual occurrences.

"This will test how alert a trainee is. They will learn how to deal with a hazardous situation by actually experiencing it and dealing with it. It will greatly improve their skills," said the official.

Over 12,000 electric and diesel locomotives daily run on a 66,000-km network across the country. There are about 86,000 train drivers.&nbsp

With 10 deaths due to the deadly Nipah virus being reported so far from northern Kerala, the state government on Wednesday issued an advisory, asking travellers to avoid visiting the four districts of Kozhikode, Malappuram, Waynad and Kannur.

"Travelling to any part of Kerala is safe. However, if travellers wish to be extra cautious, they may avoid the four districts", health secretary Rajeev Sadanandan said.

The government has also called for an all-party meeting at Kozhikode on May 25 to discuss the issue.

MPs, MLAs, other representatives of people and leaders of various political parties would attend the meeting, health minister KK Shylaja today said.

Ten people have lost their lives to Nipah in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts so far and 19 are undergoing treatment in various hospitals, including one in Waynad.

Of the 13 confirmed cases, 10 persons have died.

Isolation wards have also been set up in Thalassery government hospital in Kannur, according to media reports.

In Kozhikode, from where seven deaths have been reported, district collector UV Jose has ordered temporary stoppage of all training programmes and summer camps in affected areas such as Changaroth, Koorachund, Kottur, Cheruvannur, Chekyad, Chakkittapara and Olavanna.

The anganwadis in these regions too have been asked to close down to avoid the spread of the virus among children.

However, no decision has been taken yet concerning the reopening of schools after the summer vacation.

The administration is hoping that the situation will be under control by the time schools reopen after a week.

"The number of newly infected cases is very low now", Jose said in a statement.

In neighbouring Malappuram, where three people have died due to the virus, orders have been issued in four panchayats to stop Anganwadi classes for the time being.

A crisis management group has been constituted to coordinate the response of government agencies following the deaths in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts.

The group comprises additional chief secretaries of health, revenue, labour, home principal secretary forest, director animal husbandry and state epidemiologists, among others.

Keeping in mind the sacrifice of 28-year-old Lini Puthussery, a nurse at Perambra Taluk hospital, who died after being infected by the virus while treating her patients, the government today decided to give a job to her husband and financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh each for her two sons - aged five and two.

The next of kin of nine others who died of the virus would be given an assistance of Rs 5 lakh each.

Meanwhile, DGP Loknath Behara warned that stern action would be taken against those who spread false information with regard to the virus in the social media.

Creation of fake or false messages, spreading them to cause panic or public disorder are criminal acts and liable for investigation and prosecution.

Directions have been issued to DGP (crimes) to register criminal cases against the creators of the messages and propagators, he said.

An expert team from the National Centre for Disease -Control (NCDC), including its director, Dr Sujeet Kumar Singh and Head of Epidemiology, Dr S K Jain, and a high-level team from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS)are already in Kerala to take stock of the situation.

The outbreak of the virus infection, which is a newly emerging zoonosis that causes severe disease in both animals and humans, is suspected to be from an unused well which was infested with bats.

India will take a long-term view on the retail pricing of petrol and diesel to shield consumers from volatility in global markets, the government said on Wednesday, suggesting it could change the way pump prices are calculated.

Prices of diesel and petrol in India have surged to a record high, stoking opposition criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration for causing hardship to ordinary people.

Rising global crude prices are largely behind the surge, but fuel is also heavily taxed by India's state and federal authorities, accounting for about half the cost of petrol and 40 per cent of the diesel price. In Delhi, petrol costs 77.17 rupees&nbspa litre and diesel costs 68.34 rupees a litre.

"The government is keen that instead of having an ad hoc measure it may be desirable to have a long-term view which addresses not only the volatility but also takes care of the unnecessary ambiguity arising out of frequent ups and downs," Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told a news conference.

India is particularly at risk from stronger global prices for crude oil as it is the No.3 importer of the commodity buying about 80 percent of its oil needs. India&nbsphas a surplus of refined products, but local prices of petrol and diesel are linked to Singapore gasoline prices and Arab Gulf diesel prices.

The pump price of the two locally-refined fuels also include import tax on the two products which the government could tinker with to help customers, industry sources say.

M. K. Surana, chairman of state-run fuel retailer and refiner Hindustan Petroleum Corp, said the government should review taxation of petrol and diesel to provide relief to the customer.

"The long term solution is to bring all the petroleum products under goods and service tax that will rationalise the taxation structure," he added.

Opposition leaders have criticised the government for failing to rein in rising fuel prices, a politically-sensitive issue in one of the world's biggest economies.

Rising pump prices are already adding to inflationary pressure and are strengthening the case for a rate hike.

India's Economic Survey, issued by the finance ministry at the end of January, estimated a $10 per barrel rise in global oil prices reduced growth by 0.2-0.3 percentage points, increased wholesale price inflation by about 1.7 percentage points and worsens the current account deficit by about $9-10 billion.

Former finance minister P. Chidambaram of the opposition Congress Party tweeted that there was space to reduce petrol prices by about 25 rupees a litre.

However, situations led him to the post of Chief Minister, despite his party winning just 37 seats.&nbsp

Janata Dal (Secular) leader Haradanahalli Devegowda Kumaraswamy sworn-in as the 18th CM of state, repeating the oath after Governor Vajubhai Vala.&nbsp

The 58-year-old has become the CM on the second occasion. He had earlier presided over the post in 2006 when the JD(S) had tied up with the BJP. His last tenure, however, lasted for only 20 months.

Senior Congress leader and president of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, G Parameshwara, was sworn-in as the Deputy Chief Minister.&nbsp

The Congress-JD(S) government will have a total of 34 Ministers - 12 from the JD(S) and 22 from the Congress. The Cabinet Ministers will take oath after their names will be finalised.

The entire anti-BJP front, comprising of Congress, JD(S), CPI(M), AIMIM, TDP, TMC, NCP, AAP, SP and BSP, were present at the venue.

Troops of the BSF, country's largest border guarding force, will now undertake a "mandatory" test that will analyse the state of their happiness and wellbeing before deployment along the borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh, and in anti-Naxal operations.

The forces' headquarters here has prepared a multi-point wellness quotient assessment test (WQAT) tool that helps "identify stress precipitators and physical and mental health issues that need interventions."

"The WQAT is a special tool designed to understand the happiness quotient and mental wellbeing of an individual and this has now been made a compulsory part of the annual medical test for the troops," a recent directive issued by the force, accessed by PTI, says.

The new policy measure has been introduced by BSF Director General (DG) K K Sharma after he got a major research project conducted by UK-based experts with the help of force Inspector General (IG) Satwant A Trivedi, to analyse various triggers behind suicides and other stress factors suffered by troops and their possible solutions.

The force has also published a 62-page booklet titled 'Happiness and Health: Endeavour towards holistic well being' chronicling the new standard operating procedures (SoPs) for undertaking physical, psychological and socio-economic interventions, and ways to address the grievances and overall health issues of the about 2.5 lakh personnel strong paramilitary force.

"Research provides evidence to indicate that all such cases (of stress), if cared for, at the right time can take a turn towards mend. Valuable human resource needs to be nurtured carefully," Sharma wrote in the booklet that was unveiled by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh yesterday.

In this series, the Gujarat frontier of the force has also launched a 'Ghar ki Baat' initiative in which troops, on a fixed day of the week, gather at border posts along the India-Pakistan frontier and share their personal as well as professional problems.

This plan, a senior official said, will only be replicated at other forward locations of the force once the Gujarat experiment is found successful as not every person is willing to share his or her problem publicly.

The supervisory commanders of the force have been directed to undertake a number of other intervention techniques like interviewing the jawan as soon as he is back from leave.

"This exercise is seen as routine at times due to lack of interest of senior officers but it will help the commanding officer know about the various issues being faced by a jawan both at their homes and professional front," the new SoPs say in the booklet.

"Due to adherence of chain of command in making representation through proper channel, grievance redressal becomes more time taking," they say.

"More emphasis on informal interaction by superior commanders and creating more awareness on the availability of various channels for airing grievances, including through help-line numbers and others should be done," the SoPs say.

They also ask field commanders to undertake yoga, meditation, counselling and have a buddy system (one person responsible for the other) to check stress amongst the personnel.&nbsp

Talking about steps to prevent suicides, the new SOPs state that supervisory officers and fellow personnel should avoid "sermonising, arguing, giving advice or telling such a person to 'forget about it'", and instead should engage the individual and also deny him access to firearms.

As per official data, a total of 173 BSF personnel have committed suicide in the last five years, while over a dozen such deaths have happened this year.

These figures are much more than operational deaths in the line of duty, that took place during the same period.

The BSF jawans are deployed for long stints in inhospitable and harsh climate areas along the India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh borders, where they cannot keep their families for years together and all these factors contribute to complaints of stress and fatigue among them.&nbsp
