The Shiv Sena has said it will not fight the 2019 elections with the BJP as an ally.&nbsp;

News reports described the visit as part of Shah's "Sampark for Samarthan" campaign, in which he visits famous personalities, gives them a report of the BJP's four years in power, and asks them to endorse the party in the future.&nbsp;

A day before Pranab Mukherjee addresses an RSS event in Nagpur, the former president's daughter and Congress leader Sharmistha Mukherjee today disapproved of his decision, saying he was giving the BJP and the Sangh a handle to plant false stories, as his "speech will be forgotten" but the "visuals will remain".

Taking to Twitter, she hoped the former president would realise how the BJP's "dirty tricks department" works and said that with his visit, he was giving the BJP and RSS "full handle to plant false stories".

She also warned her father of the consequences of attending such a meet.

Her outburst came soon after rumours about her joining the BJP cropped up ahead of Mukherjee's visit to Nagpur tomorrow.

She dismissed such "rumours" of her joining the BJP as "false" and alleged they were the handiwork of BJP's "dirty tricks department".

She said she would rather leave politics than quit the Congress.

Mukherjee would be visiting the RSS headquarters tomorrow and would address a function there.

The visit has already given rise to a lot of speculation and a host of Congress leaders have urged the former president to review his decision for the sake of secularism.

Sharmistha Mukherjee, who is out of the city on a holiday, took to Twitter to swiftly deny the rumours, which appeared amid a row over her father accepting an invite to address the RSS event.

Rubbishing the rumours, she said on Twitter: "In the mountains enjoying a beautiful sunset, and suddenly this news that I'm supposedly joining BJP hits like a torpedo! Can't there be some peace and sanity in this world? I joined politics because I believe in Congress. Would rather leave politics than leave Congress," she tweeted.

Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken also rejected such suggestions, saying Sharmistha Mukherjee is a "devoted" Congress person.

"In reply to certain rumors-Just spoke to @Sharmistha_GK , who is out of Delhi- She is a devoted Congress Person and firmly believes in the ideology of @INCIndia. She told me, that she is in politics, just because of her firm faith in the ideology of the Congress Party," he wrote on Twitter.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has slammed — and fact-checked — the speech Rahul Gandhi's gave at Mandsaur today.&nbsp;

"How much does he know? When will he know?" Jaitley said in a Facebook post. He then went on to ask whether Rahul was being "inadequately briefed" or whether he was being a little too "liberal with his facts".&nbsp;

Rahul spoke in Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh today on the first anniversary of the killing of seven farmers by police. The farmers had been agitating for higher remuneration for their crops.&nbsp;

Rahul promised his audience that all farm loans would be waived should the Congress be voted into power in Madhya Pradesh in the forthcoming assembly elections.&nbsp;

He also met the families of the farmers shot dead last year.&nbsp;

This is what Jaitley had to say about his speech:&nbsp;

1). He (Rahul Gandhi) accused Prime Minister Modi of waiving of the loans of Rs.2.5 lakh crores of the 15 top industrialists in the country. - Factually this is completely false.&nbsp; 
The Government has not waived of a single rupee due from any industrialist. The facts are to the contrary. Those who owed money to the banks and other creditors have been declared insolvent and removed from their companies by IBC enacted by Prime Minister Modi’s Government. These loans were given largely during the UPA Government.&nbsp;

2). Loans are not available to the kisans but only to the industrialists- Factually false.&nbsp; 
This was during the UPA Government, particularly UPA II, when bulk of amount constitute the NPA’s today were given by the banking system during the period 2008-14. From 2014 we have been systematically taking one step after the other to recover these monies back.&nbsp;

3). Prime Minister has given Rs.35000 crores each to two diamond jewellers who have now escaped out of country – factually false. 
This banking fraud started in the year 2011 when the UPA II was in power. It was only detected during the NDA period.&nbsp;

4). If the Congress comes to power mobile phones, which are made in China, will now be manufactured in India - a case of inadequate knowledge.&nbsp; 
In the year 2014 when UPA went out of power, there were only two mobile phone manufacturing units in India. In 2018, with the result of our electronics policy and the incentives in a four year period, this has increased to 120 units with an investment of Rs.1,32,000 crores.&nbsp;

5). Jobs not being created in India 
The latest GDP date has reemphasised India as the fastest growing economy in the world. There is a double digit growth in construction, expansion in manufacturing, an increased capital formation which indicates investment increase, large investment in physical infrastructure and increased investment in rural India. All these are job creating sectors.&nbsp;

6). We will connect farms and villages to the cities – His impression is of the Digvijay Singh era in Madhya Pradesh. 
Madhya Pradesh had the worst set of roads in India when the Congress was voted out in 2003. Poor quality roads was one key reason for ousting the Congress. Thanks to Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Prime Minister Modi who during the NDA Government, has tripled the investment in rural roads, in comparison to what the UPA spent, there is a revolution in the Gram Sadak Yojana.

The Odisha police will seek permission from the Centre to declare Puri and its periphery as 'No Flying Zone' during the Rath Jatra of Lord Jagannath, an official said.

This was decided yesterday at a co-ordination meeting, presided over by Odisha DGP R P Sharma, on the Rath Jatra on&nbsp;July 14&nbsp;at Puri.

"It was decided to seek permission from the Centre to declare Puri town and its periphery as No Flying Zone during the festival. The Director of the Biju Patnaik International Airport and the Director of Civil Aviation have said that they will pursue the matter," he said.

The state's senior police personnel, officers of the central government, security agencies like the CRPF, the BSF, the NSG, the RPF, the Coast Guard, the Airport Authorities of India, the Indian Navy and the IB also attended the meeting.

While a threadbare discussion was held relating to the security arrangement for smooth conduct of the festival, the central agencies expressed desires to extend their support to provide sufficient number of manpower and equipment to supplement the security.

While the Coast Guard has agreed for adequate sea patrolling off the coast of Puri, the RPF offered to ensure adequate security at Puri and Bhubaneswar railway stations and dissemination of information to passengers on timings of different trains.

As decided in the meeting sufficient number of CCTV cameras will be installed by the RPF in the Puri railway station during this mega festival, the official said.

Senior officers of the CRPF and the BSF also expressed their co-operation to prevent any subversive act by extremist groups, he said.

A team of the NSG is likely to camp at Puri to meet any emergency during the festival, the official said adding that sufficient number of personnel from NDRF would also be deployed to act in any crisis situation.

The state's senior police personnel, officers of the central government, security agencies like the CRPF, the BSF, the NSG, the RPF, the Coast Guard, the Airport Authorities of India, the Indian Navy and the IB also attended the meeting. While a threadbare discussion was held relating to the security arrangement for smooth conduct of the festival, the central agencies expressed desires to extend their support to provide sufficient number of manpower and equipment to supplement the security. While the Coast Guard has agreed for adequate sea patrolling off the coast of Puri, the RPF offered to ensure adequate security at Puri and Bhubaneswar railway stations and dissemination of information to passengers on timings of different trains. As decided in the meeting sufficient number of CCTV cameras will be installed by the RPF in the Puri railway station during this mega festival, the official said. Senior officers of the CRPF and the BSF also expressed their co-operation to prevent any subversive act by extremist groups, he said. A team of the NSG is likely to camp at Puri to meet any emergency during the festival, the official said adding that sufficient number of personnel from NDRF would also be deployed to act in any crisis situation.

Since then, I have been taking care of his work, parents, and brother. We have been seen together at events, but Armaan never made our relationship official. He wanted to keep it under wraps and I didn’t really care about it. He has had a string of relationships where the girls have often accused him of abuse, so I thought he didn’t want to put me out there to be judged. I took care of his house and put up with his bratty attitude.”

She also told how her fights had already started and how ugly they had become since a very long time since Armaan was very short tempered.

“The argument started on a frivolous matter. I manage Armaan’s villa in Goa, which is often rented out, and had made a booking for a client. However, the client had made the payment to the villa staff and when Armaan asked me about the money, I told him that I will ask the staff to transfer it. Suddenly, he started verbally abusing me. Before I realized what was happening, he caught me by my hair and banged my head against the floor. I begged him to allow me to go to the hospital, promising that I wouldn’t approach the police. The wound was so deep that I had to undergo a surgery. The doctor told me that the scar would be visible even after the surgery, as the assault has damaged my skin tissues. He had assaulted me in February this year, and nearly broke my nose.”

She further added that Armaan has been trying to call and apologize to her “Armaan has been sending me text messages since Sunday, asking me to come back home, and he is even promising to marry me right away, but I have had enough!”

This is not the first time Armaan has assaulted her. Neeru revealed that she had left him and gone to Dubai but he pleaded her to come back.

“This relationship has been a huge mistake, but I continued to give him chances despite being warned by friends and family. In fact, I had called time on the relationship in September last year and left for Dubai. I got a job and was living there peacefully. However, three months later, Armaan came to take me back home. He told me that he needs me as I have made him a better person and taken care of his parents and brother. I left everything and returned to India with him.”

World Environment Day this year (today) will focus on the thorny plastic pollution issue. Social media feeds every day offer users with something or other that plastic is destroying or polluting. Long gone are the days where everyone would applaud the benefits of the cheap petrochemical byproduct. Plastic is on the wanted list, it’s like a weapon of mass destruction… only one that every single one of us uses on a daily basis.

The horror stories abound media in its entirety. The most recent example is the tragic end of a whale in Thailand because she ate 80 plastic bags. The contents of her stomach were even beamed on every screen to show the public how real, how lethal, plastic garbage is. We read about how this material clogs rivers, pollutes oceans and beaches, kills fauna and flora. Many magazine covers have with a single photo expressed the urgency of the situation: whether the plastic bag-cum-iceberg or the seagull caught within a plastic bag, standing helplessly. Basically, we’ve heard about the harm plastic does to all living entities — be it humans, animals or plants — and have been shown all of its negative effects. We subscribe to environmental events, pledges, online petitions and other trendy initiatives to "beat plastic pollution". But what is our own, personal, individual contribution to it? What do we do in our daily lives to reverse harmful plastic proliferation? Truth be told, for most of us, absolutely nothing. Zilch. Nada.

Ironically, this is the best place to start: I, me, the individual… that one single person. To understand better the power of the individual, a good place to understand how this dynamic works is the other end of the spectrum. What caused the pollution in the first place? How did it begin? It began with one person. One person thought it was OK to throw away a plastic bottle on the ground. One person thought it was OK to dispose of plastic bags in the nearby river. One person was watched by another person, then another, then another… and the result is the heaps and mountains of plastic we encounter everyday… whether we’re driving to work or trying to walk on a sidewalk to the ATM or the market. There is plastic litter along every step of the way… at least in India’s metropolitan cities.

There’s a particular mindset in most of India metros… that of "mindlessness". Which can be defined by someone not particularly caring about how a situation is going to be resolved after they have been served. No need to venture very far to see how this works. Many religious institutions in our local neighbourhoods give out "offerings". These are usually food in single-use or disposable plastic or styrofoam containers. What happens to these utensils after their single use is often this: dumped at the very place where the person or persons stood to eat them. Not in a waste bin, and much less taken home to be responsibly disposed of. Each one of us often mindlessly disposes of plastic bottles, cutlery and straws. Each one of us have refillable water bottles at home — but how often do we buy disposable ones? How many of us feel responsible about where the plastic we use ends up?

This brings us to the next word of interest: responsibility. Even though we are aware that a single-use plastic spoon or straw will take a 100 years or so to disintegrate naturally, how many of us refuse one when offered? What about going to the fruit and vegetable seller down the street — how many of us carry our own bags so we avoid getting even more plastic out on the street? How many of us shop with plastic consciousness: looking at products that use more eco-friendly or very scant packaging? How many of us have thought of a zero-waste lifestyle? How many of us even know what that is?

The problem is that plastic is so embedded in our lifestyles, we seldom take the time to ponder how we can manage without it. Yet, about 50 years ago, our parents and grandparents had a mostly plastic-free lifestyle. Milk would not come in pouches, but directly from the milkman's large cans… vegetables were carried in baskets or cloth bags… water was drunk out of mugs or fountains. Examples of the waste-free lifestyle are countless. And we have gold mines of information if we turn to our elders and ask them: how did you do that back in the day?

But instead, we are riding the plastic wave. Beating plastic pollution is just going to be the latest fad theme, the Facebook profile picture we’ll change into a logo or the HR event we’ll attend courtesy of the company we work at. On June 6, the day after the much-heralded "World Environment Day", we’ll all pretty much go back to how things were.

Meanwhile, plastic will continue seeping its way down the gullets of the animals which scavenge through refuse for food. Or those in our coastal waters who mistake it for an organism they normally feed on. That’s what happened to the whale previously mentioned, and turtles, fish and lots of marine animals… but also our neighbourhood cows and goats, and even our precious pets can be thus harmed. The danger in that is that we choose to be unaware of the hazards of plastic in our ecosystem and on our own health.

Right now, in India, plastic is a proliferating industry… with a planned growth of double the current amount over the next decade. It is aided by the government which sees in it a means of encouraging business and creating jobs. So if on one side there is the "Beat Plastic Pollution" rhetoric, on the other side there is a real economic need that has to be met. So although authorities try to green the country, they also have to allow ways for mouths to be fed... after all, this is politics.

But politics aside, what is currently happening outside of India? When did the problem begin? A starting point is usually the 50's, when the world’s population was about 2.5 billion people. We’re now at nearly 7 billion people in the world and 320 million tonnes of plastic are being produced worldwide yearly. In India alone, this figure averages 18 million tonnes a year, for a population which currently represents about 18% of the planet’s inhabitants. It’s established that production and consumption of plastics in India is tremendous. In terms of management of the plastic waste, this is where it becomes overly daunting. Despite the plastic bans in at least 17 states in the country, local agencies are unable to implement legislation. There is a critical lack of manpower and perhaps even willpower in some institutions to translate the letter of the law to ground reality when it comes to plastic pollution. One would be tempted to think that it’s an entirely separate issue from waste. Nothing could be further from the truth.

A lot of plastic waste ends up in oceans. So this a good illustration of how massive the problem is. Right now, researchers and NGOs agree that anything between 60-90% of marine debris is plastic. These are mostly fishing nets, but are also single-use items such as straws and cutlery. The problem is such that plastic debris has been found in one of the deepest underwater trench, the Marianas Trench. There is a patch of plastic in the pacific which is roughly twice the size of the state of Rajasthan. In the same Pacific Ocean, an entire uninhabited island called Henderson island has been found covered with plastic waste. This is because 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic litter our ocean…

There is so much consciousness and apparent publicity around the problem of plastic pollution that one would think it is near being resolved. But with an increasing world population and equally increasing plastic production, this isn’t likely to happen. If each individual were however to change their plastic consumption, that would definitely turn the tide around. Mindfulness is key in creating the awareness of how each single plastic straw, spoon or bag we use is going to impact the environment in which our children are going to live. Mindfulness means we care about what happens around us and what will happen after we’re gone. Being mindful of our own individual plastic use and disposal would be our single biggest contribution to protecting life on Earth.&nbsp;

Opinion: The problem of plastic pollution and what you & I can do about it

The Congress today hit back at Union minister Arun Jaitley over his jibe at Rahul Gandhi, alleging that arrogance of the BJP has touched its zenith as it turned "blind" to farm distress.

Congress communications in-charge Randeep Surjewala accused the Modi government of writing off loans worth Rs 2.41 lakh crore of a handful of crony friends citing a reply given in Parliament by the finance ministry on April 3.

"Loot and scoot had become a norm with scamsters fleeing the country after decamping with public money, he claimed in statement.

"How much does Arun Jaitley know? Has arrogance of power reached such a zenith where the BJP is blind to farmers' distress'? How are empty-worded blogs an answer to betrayal of farmers by the Modi government?" he asked.

Attacking Gandhi for his speech in Madhya Pradesh today, Jaitley wondered 'how much does he know? When will he know?'

On the Congress chief's accusation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi waived the loans of 15 top industrialists, Jaitley said this was factually and completely false.&nbsp;

The banking fraud started in 2011 when the UPA II was in power and it was only detected during the NDA period, he said in a Facebook post in response to Gandhi's speech in Mandsaur.

In his statement, Surjewala reminded the Union minister of former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru's words that "facts are facts, and will not disappear on account of your likes".

He said contrary to Jaitley's "lies", the government was actually the 'NPA sarkar' and alleged that the gross non-performing assets have gone up from over Rs 2.51 lakh crore in March 2014 to more than Rs 8.31 lakh crore in December 2017, a whopping rise of 230 per cent as per an April 6 reply in Parliament.

"Fleece the banks and fly away to foreign lands are the facility for fraudsters under the Modi Government's watch. Perhaps, Arun Jaitley forgets the recent bank loot scams worth over Rs 61,036 crore," he alleged.

The Congress leader said over 130 farmers organisations were protesting across India through an unprecedented rural bandh and rural distress, agricultural indebtedness, farmer suicides and distress sale of crops much below MSP was the new order.

"Arun Jaitley, Union minister without portfolio, with zero knowledge of agriculture is giving ?gyan' (wisdom) to the nation again today, with his usual travesty of facts and trivialization of farmers' issues," he alleged.

Surjewala also alleged that ?Make in India' has become an empty slogan of the government and the BJP and its 'minister without portfolio' forgot that industrial growth has declined from 7.4 per cent in 2016 to 4.45 per cent in 2018.&nbsp;

He alleged that between 2014 and 2018, India's revenue from exports was zero.

"Arun Jaitley waxes eloquent about jobs. The BJP promised two crore jobs per year, but the stark reality that it has only betrayed our youth. The Modi government created only 4.16 lakh jobs in 2016-17 and 77 per cent of Indian workers will have vulnerable employment by 2019 as per ILO.

"Let us not forget that there is 'lowest-ever' agriculture growth under the Modi government - 1.9 per cent (2014-18) as compared to 4.2 per cent under Congress (2004-14)

"The prime minister's promise of MSP equal to cost plus 50 per cent profit for farmers is a white lie. Rural wage growth has dipped from 38 per cent in 2014 to zero per cent in 2018 (RBI report). Tragically, 35 farmers are driven to suicide every 24 hours (NCRB data)," he said.

He said sugarcane arrears surge to over Rs 20,000 crore as an "insensitive" government "floundered".

The PM Fasal Bima Yojana benefited insurance companies, not farmers and companies earned a profit of Rs 14,828 crore but farmers got paid only Rs 5,650 crore, he claimed.

Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan today vowed to not allow petrol and diesel prices go out of reach of the common man, saying the government is working on a holistic solution to price volatility without going back on reforms.

Blaming geopolitics of oil, exchange rate fluctuations and local taxes for petrol and diesel prices touching a record high, he said the government is sensitive and will ensure that "poor, middle class are not pained."

"We will deal with the issue," he said at a news conference called to highlight his government's achievement in four years. "The government will take a holistic view (of the situation) so that petro prices do not pinch them. Government will do all that is possible."

Asked if the solutions under consideration include partial roll-back of fuel price deregulation, he said, "Not at all."

"This question doesn't arise. This government is a pro-reform government and we cannot go back on what we have reformed," he said.

The government had deregulated or freed petrol pricing from its control in June 2010 and diesel in October 2014. It allowed revision of prices on daily basis since mid-June last year to reflect changes in cost instantly. 
"We will not allow prices to go out of reach of the common man," he said.

Pradhan refused to say if the solution being considered includes asking oil producers like ONGC cough-up some money so that fuel can be subsidised, like it used to do till 2015. "I cannot discuss the solutions being considered," he said.

After hitting an all-time high of Rs 78.43 a litre for petrol and Rs 69.31 for diesel on May 29, rates have been cut on subsequent days on softening international oil prices and rupee strengthening against the US dollar.

Petrol price has dropped by 71 paise a litre and diesel by 51 paise. This compares to Rs 3.8 a litre hike in petrol and Rs 3.38 a litre hike in diesel rates in Delhi in the fortnight beginning May 14 when state-owned oil firms ended a 19-day pre-Karnataka poll hiatus to resume daily price revision.

Petrol in Delhi today costs Rs 77.96 and diesel Rs 68.72. Prices in Delhi are the lowest among all metro cities and most state capitals due to lower sales tax or VAT.&nbsp

Retail prices are still higher than the peak touched during the previous UPA regime. Petrol had touched Rs 76.06 on September 14, 2013. The peak price for diesel during previous UPA government was hit on May 13, 2014, when rates touched Rs 56.71 a litre.

Since January 1, 2018, petrol prices have risen by Rs 7.75 a litre and diesel by Rs 9.16. Petrol price in Delhi was Rs 71.41 a litre and diesel was priced at Rs 56.71 when the present BJP-government took office.

Pradhan parried questions on centre cutting excise tax to offer relief to common man.

He said taxes on petrol and diesel are made up of excise duty charged by the centre, and sales tax (VAT) charged by state governments.

The taxes charged by states should be "reasonable and responsible," he said refusing to be drawn into debate on most BJP states refusing to cut VAT.

Left-ruled Kerala had last week taken a lead in cutting VAT on petrol and diesel by Re 1 per litre.

The minister said states have different economic needs and one solution cannot fit all.

BJP president Amit Shah will today meet industrialist Ratan Tata, singer Lata Mangeshkar and actor Madhuri Dixit and share the Modi government's achievements with them as part of his party's "contact for support" campaign, sources in the party said. 
 
Mr Shah, who will be in Mumbai today, is also scheduled to meet sporting legend Milkha Singh on&nbsp;June 7&nbsp;in Chandigarh, they said. 
 
The BJP launched a mega public drive, sampark for samarthan, following the Modi government's fourth anniversary on May 26. It announced that 4,000 functionaries of the party will contact one lakh people, who are well-known names in their fields, to spread the word about the government's works during its four-year tenure. 
 
Mr Shah will himself contact 50 people, the party had said. 
 
Launching the exercise, he met former Army chief Dalbir Singh Suhag and former Lok Sabha secretary general Subhash Kashyap on May 29. 
 
He has also met cricket legend Kapil Dev, former chief justice of India RC Lahoti and yoga guru Ramdev, who is associated with the Patanjali group of companies. 
 
Mr Shah had earlier said that the campaign was aimed at informing people about various government initiatives, which have resulted in raising the living standards of people. BJP president Amit Shah will today meet industrialist Ratan Tata, singer Lata Mangeshkar and actor Madhuri Dixit and share the Modi government's achievements with them as part of his party's "contact for support" campaign, sources in the party said. Mr Shah, who will be in Mumbai today, is also scheduled to meet sporting legend Milkha Singh on June 7 in Chandigarh, they said. The BJP launched a mega public drive, sampark for samarthan, following the Modi government's fourth anniversary on May 26. It announced that 4,000 functionaries of the party will contact one lakh people, who are well-known names in their fields, to spread the word about the government's works during its four-year tenure. Mr Shah will himself contact 50 people, the party had said. Launching the exercise, he met former Army chief Dalbir Singh Suhag and former Lok Sabha secretary general Subhash Kashyap on May 29. He has also met cricket legend Kapil Dev, former chief justice of India RC Lahoti and yoga guru Ramdev, who is associated with the Patanjali group of companies. Mr Shah had earlier said that the campaign was aimed at informing people about various government initiatives, which have resulted in raising the living standards of people. A lot of work had been done to remove the problems people faced in villages and to help the poor live a better life, he had said.

Archbishop of Goa and Daman Father Filipe Neri Ferrao had in a letter said the Constitution was in danger and most of the people were living in insecurity. 
 
"As heads of religious institutions they must bless all. The distance between a religious institution & politics should be maintained," Yadav said in a series of tweets. 
 
In a swipe at the Goa archbishop, he referred to the proclamation of the Emergency in 1975 and said his office did not see any threat to the Constitution then when it was in danger. 
 
'They are now choosing to speak for political and not religious sections. Religious institutions controlling politics & political opinion happen in theocratic state which was rejected centuries ago," Yadav said. 
 
The BJP leader wondered what would happen if heads of other religious denominations followed the archbishop's example and started making similar appeals. 
 
He said both archbishops might have written their letters in general terms, but their message had not been lost. 
 
"After the political letter written by the Archbishop of Delhi, his counterpart in Goa has expressed a similar view. It's a political appeal by a religious head which marks a new dangerous trend in Indian politics. India isn't a theocratic state. It doesn't distinguish on basis of religion. India is world's largest democracy. It's governed by one of the most liberal constitutions of the world," he said.

The very fact that archbishops have expressed their criticism is the best evidence of free speech, he said.

A group of public health experts have urged superstar Amitabh Bachchan to dissociate himself from promoting Horlicks, a multinational brand that has extended support to the Centre's recently launched National Nutrition Mission aimed at addressing the issue of undernutrition in the country.

The experts under the banner of the Nutrition Advocacy in Public Interest - India (NAPi) in a letter to the actor said, "Horlicks is a high sugar product, as 100 gram of a popularly advertised pack of Horlicks Delight, contains 78 gram of carbohydrates of which 32 grams is sucrose sugar".&nbsp;

"This is harmful for children as it may contribute to childhood obesity and non-communicable disease in later life," the experts said.

They said the WHO recommends a reduced daily intake of free sugars throughout the life course to less than 10 per cent of total energy intake.&nbsp;

Furthermore, in the interest of good health WHO suggests intake of free sugars to below 5 per cent of total energy intake, the letter stated.

The letter mentioned that in 2016, the World Health Assembly (WHA) adopted a Resolution 69.9 that recommends ending inappropriate promotion of foods for children from ages 6-36 months based on WHO and FAO dietary guidelines.&nbsp;

"Going by this recommendation promotion of Horlicks falls in category of inappropriate as they use false health claims in TV commercials," they said, adding that it dents Bachchan's image as a socially responsible celebrity.&nbsp;

"I fear that this campaign may have serious adverse repercussions: Horlicks is expensive and is likely to drain pockets of marginalized families under the misbelief that Horlicks is a good nutritious product for children as it is endorsed by Mr Bachchan. Thus Horlicks may displace healthy real family home foods and this way contravenes tackling the problem of undernutrition among children," said Dr Arti Maria, Head of Neonatology Department, RML hospital here.

Dr Aseem Malhotra, a renowned British cardiologist and author of?The Pioppi Diet? and former Director of Action on Sugar, UK, said high sugar foods/beverages should be prohibited for children as sugar has no nutritional value and that there is increasing evidence that added sugar increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and fatty liver.

Facing flak from some farmers' leaders for meeting Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy over the Cauvery issue, actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan on Wednesday defended his initiative saying there was no restriction to work for a noble cause, news agency PTI reported.

Speaking to reporters after meeting leaders of some farmers' associations here, the founder of Makkal Needhi Maiyam (MNM) urged farmers of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to talk it out to keep "other politicians" at bay.

"People are raising questions on my importance. I would say there is no restriction to work for a noble cause. To which political outfit did freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi belong? He used to be at the forefront to fight any issue," Haasan was quoted as saying.

On Monday, Haasan had met Kumaraswamy in Bengaluru and discussed the Cauvery issue and pitched for talks to resolve the issue, saying courts were never a solution to the problem of sharing of the inter-state river.

Some farmers' leaders yesterday criticised Hassan for advocating talks, saying why he should now pitch for dialogue with Karnataka when the Cauvery Management Authority has been set up after decades-long legal battle.

However, a group of representatives of some farmers organisations which met Hassan today welcomed his initiative.

They presented him a sword and a pick-axe as a token of appreciation of his efforts on the issue, they said.

"We are open to anyone who come to the rescue of farmers. The meeting with the (Karnataka) Chief Minister should not be politicised," president of National-South Indian Rivers Linking Farmers Association P Ayyakkannu said.

President of Federation of Farmers' Association P K Deivasigamani and representatives of some other farmers' bodies were present during the meeting with Haasan.

On the opposition to Rajinikanth-starrer 'Kaala' in Karnataka, Haasan said there were many people in the neighbouring state waiting for the release of the movie, which is set to hit screens tomorrow worldwide.

Kamal Haasan defends meet with Karnataka CM over Cauvery issue

Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday promised to waive farmers` loans in 10 days if voted to power in Madhya Pradesh.

Addressing a rally in Mandsaur, Gandhi questioned the government on the delay in filing a probe report into the death of seven farmers in police firing a year ago, alleging that the BJP government in the state had failed to provide security to farmers and address their concerns.

"I assure you when the Congress forms the government in Madhya Pradesh, farmers` loans will be written off within 10 days. The families of the farmers (killed in Mandsaur last year) will get justice in 10 days and we will take action against those responsible for the firing," the Congress President said.

The Gandhi scion also lashed out at the state and Central governments for ignoring the farm distress across the country.

"The governments are of no use if they cannot provide security to farmers and their families. A total of 1,200 farmers committed suicide in Madhya Pradesh. Did any rich person or their family member commit suicide who have lakhs of crores as debt," he said, addressing the Kisan Samriddhi Sankalp Rally.

Earlier, Gandhi paid tributes to the dead farmers in Piplia Mandi town of Mandsaur district.

He also met the families of the slain farmers.

On Tuesday, Kamal met the newly-appointed Karnataka Chief Minister Kumaraswamy in Bengaluru to discuss several issues concerning the ties between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The Cauvery water-sharing issue was top on the agenda.

Post their closed-door meeting, both the CM and Kamal displayed a certain rapport at the media briefing. But when they were questioned on Kaala and debate around its release, both dismissed it. While Kumaraswamy claimed, “It was a different issue and not necessary”, Kamal affirmed with, “Not a word was spoken about that.”

“There are film chambers and business community who will take care of it (Kaala issue). And we (Kumaraswamy and Kamal) will see that good relationship exists between both the states,” he said.

He further added, “This is more important than movies if you ask me.”

This was not taken lightly by social media fans as Kamal’s statement sounded ironic to people who remembered the time when Rajinikanth championed Kamal when the latter’s film Vishwaroopam was met with the same response by activists groups.&nbsp;

Trade pundits feel the film needs to collect Rs 280 crore gross to be called a blockbuster hit, and this is inclusive of the Telugu and Hindi dubbed versions. If the film manages to release in Karnataka, they would have to earn a gross of Rs 300 crore. 
 
The figures are achievable considering that superstar is a crowd puller and release day of his films are considered as unofficial holidays in many parts of south India.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, 'Kaala' producers Dhanush and his Aishwarya<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/entertainment-rajini-starrer-kaala-makers-move-karnataka-high-court--142280"> have filed a petition at Karnataka High Court </a>seeking directions to the state government and Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) for the smooth release of the film.

In the plea, Dhanush, who is Rajinikanth’s son-in-law, submitted that it is the fundamental right of the petitioners under the Constitution to exhibit the film.

The Yogi Adityanatha government has moved quickly to contain the fallout after Patanjali Ayurveda co-founder Acharya Balkrishna said they were moving their Rs 6,000-crore food-processing plant out of Uttar Pradesh.&nbsp;

Balkrishna&nbsp;made his announcement Tuesday, saying they had received "no cooperation" from the government.&nbsp;

The planned food park was supposed to come up near the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida, where Patanjali already has 450 acres.&nbsp;

It was the former Akhilesh Yadav government that had allotted the 450 acres to Patanjali Ayurveda for a food and herbal park.&nbsp;

Patanjali had wanted 50 of those acres transferred to its subsidiary, Patanjali Food Products, for the setting up of the food-processing plant or mega food park. (The central government gives a Rs 150 crore subsidy for the setting up of a mega food park.)&nbsp;

But the transfer needed approval from the Centre, which was not coming because Patanjali had not completed its paperwork.&nbsp;

Patanjali in turn said they had not been able to complete the paperwork because they had got "no cooperation" from the state government.&nbsp;

Patanjali had said their plant would create 10,000 jobs, and would also buy agricultural produce from nearby famers.&nbsp;

News reports said Wednesday that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister picked up the phone and spoke with Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev — he is the other founder of Patanjali Ayurved — promising to move things along.&nbsp;

And that the food park would stay in Uttar Pradesh.&nbsp;
