Karnataka's Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Saturday expressed his distress of being the head of a coalition government in the state. He described his plight similar to swallowing poison.&nbsp;

During a felicitation event in Bengaluru, Kumaraswamy refused to accept bouquets and garlands stating that he is not at all happy on being the head of a coalition government. Kumaraswamy further stated his government is not the ultimate and absolute choice of the people of Karnataka.&nbsp;

"You are standing with bouquets to wish me as one of your brothers became the Chief Minister and you all are happy, but I'm not. I know the pain of coalition government. I became Vishkanth and swallowed pain of this government," he stated.&nbsp;

The chief minister stated how difficult it gets for him to convince various officials to get projects through. Tinged with distress, Kumaraswamy got teary-eyed while speaking.&nbsp;

He also stated that the urge to become the chief minister was only to work for the people of Karnataka and to ''realise unfinished agenda of my father HD Deve Gowda''.&nbsp;

A group of boys vandalised 'Dilli 19' restaurant situated in the national capital's Kalkaji area on Saturday night following an argument over parking space.

Owner of the restaurant, Rohit said, "Some delivery boys came to pick orders at 7 pm. They don't understand how to park a bike. The beat officer intervened and asked them to leave."

Rohit further said that after being dispersed by the police, the miscreants returned few hours later and vandalised the restaurant.

"They have a WhatsApp group where they communicated and around 25 peoples started raising slogans against us. At 11:30 pm, around 80-100 boys came and vandalised our restaurant even though families including children were present inside. Customers escaped through the kitchens," Rohit added.&nbsp

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj held a meeting with Foreign Minister of Bahrain Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa in Manama, Bahrain on Sunday.

The second joint commission meeting between the two leaders aimed at discussing ways to further strengthen the bilateral ties.

The first meeting of the High Joint Commission (HJC) was held in New Delhi in February 2015.

Shaikh Khalid praised the contribution of the Indian community settled in Bahrain towards the economic development of the Gulf Kingdom.

The Indian community of about 3,50,000-4,00,000 people accounts for nearly one-fourth of Bahrain's population.

Swaraj later called on Prime minister Khalifa bin Salman and held discussions on consolidating the "valuable" bilateral relationship.&nbsp;

During the visit, she also gifted a box of books called 'Bharat ek Priychay' to the National Library in Manama.&nbsp;

Swaraj is on a two-day visit to Bahrain. She reached the country on Saturday.

Swaraj calls on Bahrain's PM, co-chairs joint commission meeting with counterpart

According to the weatherman, the day is likely to remain cloudy and light rain may occur in the city, while the maximum temperature is expected to be around 33.9 degrees Celsius, one notch below the season's average.

Jharkhand: Family of 6 commits suicide in Hazaribagh 

The Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday has filed a detailed reply in the Aircel-Maxis money laundering case and opposed former finance minister P Chidambaram's anticipatory bail.

In its statement, the ED said that they have come to a bonafide conclusion that under anticipatory bail, it will not be possible to reach the truth.

"It is submitted that in the investigation conducted so far a strong prima facie case has emerged showing the involvement of the applicant in violation of larger conspiracy is unfolding," said the agency in their statement today.

"P Chidambaram is evasive in his replies to why the total foreign inflow to the tune of US $ 800 million was approved by him on March 13, 2016, deliberately and intentionally without raising any objection," added the official statement.

According to the ED, Chidambaram was examined under provisions of the PML on June 5 and June 12, but his examination is still pending.

Meanwhile, the Delhi's Patiala House Court had extended interim protection granted to P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram till August 7 in connection with the Aircel-Maxis case earlier today.

Earlier, Chidambaram had appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the case.

The Aircel-Maxis deal case, which emerged out of 2G spectrum cases, pertains to a grant by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to firm M/S Global Communication Holding Services Ltd for investment in Aircel.

The ED had earlier said that the FIPB approval granted in 2006 by Chidambaram was beyond his mandate as he was only authorised to accord approval on project proposals up to Rs 600 crore.

Karti was arrested on February 28 at the Chennai airport upon his return from the United Kingdom, for his alleged role in the case. Currently, Karti is on bail too.&nbsp

"P Chidambaram is evasive in his replies to why the total foreign inflow to the tune of US $ 800 million was approved by him on March 13, 2016, deliberately and intentionally without raising any objection," added the official statement. Taking serious note of indiscriminate issuance of arms licences within Jammu and Kashmir, the state government has also put a ban on the issuance of licences till further orders.

According to an order issued by the Principal Secretary Home Department, "No fresh individual arms licence shall be issued by the District Magistrate(s) of the state of Jammu and Kashmir till further orders."

The order also said that the State Home Department has referred the matter to the State Vigilance Organisation (SVO) for investigation and further appropriate action in terms of the law.

The Divisional Commissioners have also been directed to furnish a detailed report to the Home Department within a month.

He said the prime minister looks "desperate" sensing defeat in the next polls and was seen spreading the "poison of hatred and division" in the society.

He alleged that prime minister Modi was blinded by his desire to take revenge on Rahul Gandhi.&nbsp

Congress spokesperson Pramod Tiwari said, "If any party that has taken every section of the society along it is the Congress. This tradition has been followed from Jawaharlal Nehru to Rahul Gandhi."&nbsp

"We respect every religion and we don't believe in the politics of division," he told reporters.

On the triple talaq issue, Tiwari said, "We are in favour of triple talaq. Now the PM is saying he will talk why didn't he talk about it before introducing the bill. Deliberately you are bringing it in such a way..If you want to talk then talk, it should be in favour of women."

Countering Modi's charge on tripe talaq, senior Congress leader and former Union minister Salman Khurshid claimed the prime minister "knows nothing" about the issue and should not speak on it.

"Does the PM know what triple talaq is? Does the PM know any of these things? If he can say in public what is triple talaq, we will be very happy to answer him. I think, the PM should not speak on everything particularly on the subjects he does not know about," Khurshid said.&nbsp

"There is no Muslim, Hindu, Christian party. There are political parties and they are political parties made up of human beings. It is good if the BJP was to discover what human beings are. They have spent too much time amongst those who are not human beings," the Congress leader said in a scathing attack on the ruling party.

The BJP and the Congress have been sparring after the Urdu daily reported that the Rahul Gandhi who met Muslim intellectuals earlier this week had told them that the Congress was a party of Muslims. The Congress has dismissed the media report as a "rumour" and asserted that it was a party of 132 crore Indians.

Mayawati claimed that the framework of Purvanchal Expressway, Jewar Airport and the 8-lane Ganga Expressway from Greater Noida to Ballia were prepared during the BSP rule in the state and work on setting up the basic infrastructure had already started.

"All these works could had been completed, if the then Congress government at the Centre had given no objection certificate, but that did not happen," she said.

Mayawati said, "If the BJP government rises above electoral politics and works in the larger public interest, then it would be better."

Hours before the inauguration of the Purvanchal Expressway project, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav dismissed it as a "relaunch" of a project which he had inaugurated as the previous chief minister of the state.

"This was originally Samajwadi Purvanchal Expressway, but the word Samajwadi has been dropped," he told a press conference at the party headquarters here.&nbsp

Asking who would be the Congress's chief ministerial candidate in the Assembly elections which are due by year-end, Chouhan said, "Whenever there is a talk about leadership in Congress (in the state), 25 of them stand up to offer candidature. We have clarity on our side, but who is your commander?"

It is the third year since <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/rahul-gandhi-targets-modi-on-jump-in-indians-swiss-bank-deposits-148031">Swiss banks</a> made public a list of accounts lying dormant without any trace of owners and no claimant has come forward for those with Indian links, even as a <a href="http://www.wionews.com/business-&-economy/indians-with-illegal-swiss-bank-deposits-to-face-harsh-penal-proceedings-says-arun-jaitley-147959">political slugfest continues in India</a> over alleged black money parked there.

The list of all such accounts — of Swiss citizens and foreigners including from India — was first published by the Switzerland Banking Ombudsman in December 2015 and it keeps getting updated as and when an account is declared dormant. This is to allow real owners of the accounts or their legal heirs to stake a claim with necessary proof.

The details get deleted from the list when a successful claim is made and this was the case for as many as 40 accounts and two safe deposit boxes in the year 2017 itself, as per the latest information shared by the Ombudsman. However, the list of over 3,500 such accounts continues to have at least six with links to India since December 2015, as no successful claimant has come forward for them.

Switzerland was perceived to be among the safest havens globally for financial assets for many years before a global crackdown on alleged tax evasion by using such strong banking privacy practices as prevalent in Swiss banks led to Switzerland agreeing to tighten its rules. Subsequently, Switzerland has framed new laws for greater cooperation with several other countries on the exchange of information and for the stricter clampdown on illicit activities like money laundering and tax frauds.

India is one of the countries with which Switzerland has inked an automatic exchange of information pact on financial matters, while the Alpine nation has already been providing details on bank accounts in cases where Indian authorities have been able to provide proof of wrongdoings. As per the latest data released by the Swiss National Bank (SNB), funds parked by Indians with Swiss banks rose 50 per cent to CHF 1.01 billion (about Rs 7,000 crore) in 2017.

The funds, described by SNB as ‘liabilities’ of Swiss banks or ‘amounts due to’ their clients, are official figures disclosed by Swiss authorities and do not indicate to the exact quantum of the much-debated alleged black money held in the famed safe havens of Switzerland. The official figures, disclosed annually by Switzerland’s central bank, also do not include the money that Indians, NRIs or others might have in Swiss banks in the names of entities from different countries.

It has been often alleged that Indians and other nationals seeking to stash their illicit wealth abroad use multiple layers of various jurisdictions, including tax, havens, to shift the money in Swiss banks. Also, with Switzerland putting in place an automatic information exchange framework with India and various other countries, the famed secrecy walls of Swiss banks are said to have crumbled. India will start getting this automatic data from next year.

However, the increase in Indians’ money in Swiss banks has already triggered a sharp opposition attack on the government, which in turn has said that it would be wrong to assume that all funds deposited in Swiss banks were ‘black money’ and strong action would be taken against wrongdoers. The funds officially held by Indians with banks in Switzerland accounts for only 0.07 per cent of the total funds kept by all foreign clients in the Swiss banking system, as per the SNB data.

In terms of the dormant accounts, at least three individuals from India and three others of Indian origin — but resident of other countries — continue to figure on the list of unclaimed bank accounts made public by Switzerland since December 2015. While the specific figure for India-linked dormant accounts is not known, the total holding in all such accounts is estimated at about 44 million Swiss francs (about Rs 300 crore).

Of the six with Indian links, place of residence of three has been mentioned as India, while it is Paris (France) for one and London for another. The place of residence for the sixth person was not disclosed. These are Pierre Vachek and Bernet Rosmarie from ‘Bombay’, the earlier name of Mumbai, Bahadur Chandra Singh from Dehradun, Dr Mohan Lal from Paris, Suchah Yogesch Prabhudas from London. Kishore Lall is the person whose place of residence was not disclosed.

The date of birth has also been disclosed in one case — that is for Vachek as January 1, 1908. All these accounts were added to the public list in December 2015 and would remain there till December 2020, unless a successful claim is made for the money. There are also some such accounts from Pakistan, including of one Nawaz Haq of Wazirabad, which was added to the list in November last year.

The list is aimed at giving their owners or their legal heirs a chance to claim the funds in these accounts. Only those accounts form part of the list which have got at least 500 Swiss francs and have remained unclaimed for at least 60 years. The list contains a large number of people from Switzerland itself, as also from Germany, France, the UK, the US, Turkey, Austria and various other countries.

If no legitimate party claims the assets that have been published within one year of publication, the banks can transfer the assets in question to the government. The claim deadline for potential legitimate claimants is five years if the assets in question have been dormant since at least 1954.

The statement came even as five persons have lost their lives due to damaged roads in the Mumbai region in the last two weeks.

Speaking to reporters in Sangli on Saturday, Patil said, "When you talk about a death in such an accident, you forget that five lakh other people have travelled on the same road. You can not put the entire blame on the (condition of) roads alone."

The senior minister hastened to add that he did not have all the information about the recent accidents, and action will be taken against officials based on the facts of each case. Family members of the deceased will get due compensation, he said.

Asked about people slamming civic bodies and the state government over the bad roads on social media, Patil said, "People have a habit of changing their opinions constantly. They will like something for a while and soon pass a negative remark (on the same issue)."

Opposition Congress termed the minister's comment as insensitive.

Patil was questioning people's view of roads, but he will understand what people can do after elections, said state Congress general secretary Sachin Sawant.

"Government is not expected to run away by raising doubts about accidental deaths. We condemn the minister for his insensitive comment," Sawant tweeted today.

Accidents on pothole-ridden roads claimed four lives in Kalyan area in the last two weeks. Another death was reported in Navi Mumbai. In all these cases, victims lost balance and fell when their two-wheelers hit a pothole.

Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam claimed today that there were 20,000 potholes on Mumbai roads, and not 300 as stated by the civic body BMC before the Bombay High Court.

He was going to "file an FIR" against chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray (whose party rules the BMC), the municipal commissioner and the mayor for the bad roads, he said.&nbsp

"It will be better if he keeps a list of Congress presidents in his office. Maybe then he will leave his habit of giving wrong statements," Sharma said.

The Congress, he said, was a party "for all Indians and respects the diversity the country has to offer".

He also said the Congress was against triple talaq and the prime minister should know that there were some rules and regulations that need to be followed in Parliament.&nbsp

"This government has tried time and again to bypass Parliament. They want to get bills approved without the scrutiny of Parliament," he alleged.&nbsp

The prime minister had yesterday said the opposition was stonewalling the government's efforts to secure the life of women, especially Muslim women.

The triple talaq bill has already been passed in the Lower House but remains pending in the Rajya Sabha amid opposition reservations over it.

Sharma alleged that the prime minister was a "peddler of untruths".

Instead of giving an account of the last four years, "the prime minister is resorting to untruths, half-truth and lies", he alleged.&nbsp

"The Congress does not need any certificate from Narendra Modi or the BJP about its credentials, ideologies or credibility and commitment to the country. It is very well documented," he said.&nbsp

Sharma also said that he can understand the prime minister's helplessness as he belonged to an ideology, the followers of which had even opposed Mahatma Gandhi.&nbsp

The Congress also alleged the Modi government provided false data about the upliftment of people from below poverty line.&nbsp

The prime minister's claim that five crore people have been lifted out of poverty in two years was "laughable", Sharma said.

In fact, after demonetisation and the launch of the GST, crores of people have been thrown below the poverty line, he added.

The Chief Minister's earlier on Saturday kicked off his "Jan Ashirwad Yatra" from Ujjain. The yatra was flagged off by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Amit Shah.

Before starting his journey, Chouhan offered prayers at Ujjain's famous Mahakaleshwar temple to seek blessings from the God.

During the yatra which will conclude on September 25, the chief minister is expected to address several rallies covering all the 230 Assembly segments in the state. The yatra is aimed at reaching and connecting with voters in all assembly segments of Madhya Pradesh before polls.

With the launch of cost-effective innovative water project, Bihar will soon provide the cheapest drinking water in the world.

The first of such a water project was launched in Bihar's Darbhanga district on Saturday, by Sulabh International, an organisation that introduced the concept of 'Sulabh Sauchalya' in the country.

With the help of this project, the people will easily be able to get pure and clean water only in 50paisa/litre.

The 'Sulabh Jal' project converts contaminated pond and river water into safe drinking water.

The founder of Sulabh International Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak laid the foundation of the project at Haribol Pond in Darbhanga Nagar Nigam premises.

Darbhanga MLA Sanjay Saraogi and District Magistrate Chandrasekhar Prasad Singh were also present here on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Pathak said, "We have succeeded in producing pure drinking water at a very nominal cost by this new technology, which has not yet been introduced anywhere in the world. Villagers may get a direct benefit out the project."

"We have selected Darbhanga for this water project. The project will be functional by December," he added.

The water purification process has a capacity to purify 8,000 litres of water per day at nominal cost.

"Clean drinking water will be available at 50 paise/liter. We will also plant trees on the bank of Haribol tank here. It would be managed by Self Help group of Darbhanga Nagar Nigam," Dr Pathak said.

This project was earlier introduced in three districts of West Bengal - North 24 Parganas, Murshidabad and Nadia, three years ago by Sulabh International and French organisation on trial basis, which turned out to be very successful.

"The pilot project of this water projected started by us turned out to be very successful, following which we chose Darbhanga to begin our operation," said Dr. Pathak.

The total cost of installing this project would cost around Rs 20 lakhs.

This project may be turn out to be very beneficial for the people, as the Groundwater in many districts of northern parts of Bihar bordering Nepal is severely affected by arsenic and other chemicals.

"In course of periodic medical checkup of a group of patients suffering from arsenic-related diseases, it was revealed that this water purification system has become a boon for them (villagers)," said Dr Pathak.

Many villagers living in these areas were forced to migrate to other places due to the contaminated water.

After the installation of the water purification system, the situation has considerably changed.

The Sulabh International Social Service Organisation (SISSO) and the French companies installed Rs 20-lakh pond-based water treatment plant in Madhusudan Kanti Village of North 24 Parganas district, located some 100 km from Kolkata.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), arsenic is a natural component of the earth's crust and is widely distributed throughout the environment -- in air, water, and land. It is highly toxic in its inorganic form.

Long-term exposure to inorganic arsenic, mainly by drinking contaminated water, eating food grown or even prepared with this water, can cause skin lesions and cancer.&nbsp
