The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a review petition seeking a probe into Judge Loya's death.&nbsp;

The petition was filed by the Bombay Lawyers' Association.&nbsp;

Loya had been hearing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encouter case in which BJP President Amit Shah was also an accused. He has since been discharged in the case.&nbsp;

Sheikh and his wife Kausar Bi were allegedly abducted by the Gujarat police's Anti-Terrorism Squad from Hyderabad on their way to Sangli in Maharashtra in November 2005. According to the prosecution, Sheikh was allegedly killed in a fake encounter. Kausar Bi was allegedly also killed later.

Shah was at the time home minister of Gujarat.&nbsp;

Tulsi Prajapati, an aide of Sheikh and who was said to be a witness to the encounter, was allegedly killed by police at Chapri village in Gujarat's Banaskantha district in December 2006

The fake encounter case was transferred to Mumbai in September 2012 on the request of the CBI for ensuring a fair trial.

In 2013, the Supreme Court clubbed the Sheikh and Prajapati encounter cases.

Loya died in Nagpur on December 1, 2014, allegedly of a heart attack, while attending the wedding of a colleague's daughter.

Questions began to be asked about his death after news reports quoted his family as saying his death had been suspicious.&nbsp;

Then, on January 14, Loya's son said his <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/justice-loyas-death-had-suspicion-earlier-over-fathers-death-but-now-it-is-over-says-son-29495">father had died of natural causes</a>.

Home Minister&nbsp;Rajnath Singh&nbsp;on Tuesday informed&nbsp;Lok Sabha&nbsp;that security forces were deployed to stop further infiltration of&nbsp;Rohingyas.

Apprising the Parliament on&nbsp;Rohingyas&nbsp;issue, Rajnath said, "Border Security Force and Assam Rifles are deployed to stop further infiltration of&nbsp;Rohingyas. Have issued an advisory to states to monitor those who have already come and kept them at one place and not let them spread. States also have the right to deport them."

On this,&nbsp;Trinamool Congress&nbsp;(TMC)'s&nbsp;Sugata Bose&nbsp;said, "External Affairs Ministry is conducting 'operation insaniyat' for&nbsp;Rohingyas&nbsp;in Bangladesh. There are 40,000&nbsp;Rohingyas&nbsp;in India, will we show insaniyat for only those who are in Bangladesh? " 
Terming Bose's statement "unfortunate", Minister of State for Home Affairs,&nbsp;Kiren Rijiju noted that India is the only country to have adopted such a soft approach to refugees.

"This is an unfortunate statement by him (TMC's&nbsp;Sugata Bose). India is probably the only country which has adopted such a soft approach to refugees. We also told&nbsp;Myanmar that we are ready to assist them in providing facilities to&nbsp;Rohingyas&nbsp;when they return," he said.

Last month, the Central Government had circulated a letter to all the state governments including Jammu and Kashmir asking them to take necessary steps to prevent the entry of illegal migrants such as&nbsp;Rohingyas&nbsp;from&nbsp;Myanmar.

During her recent visit to India, Bangladesh Prime Minister&nbsp;Sheikh Hasina&nbsp;had also spoken about the Rohingya issue and said that the New Delhi should play an important role in ensuring the safe repatriation of the Rohingya refugees back to&nbsp;Myanmar.

Rohingyas&nbsp;are a Muslim minority ethnic group in&nbsp;Myanmar&nbsp;and are considered to be illegal immigrants.

Scores of Rohingya refugees are languishing in Indian refugee camps, after fleeing a brutal&nbsp;Myanmar&nbsp;army campaign launched in August last year.

They are residing in several parts of the country including Jammu, Hyderabad, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR, and Rajasthan.&nbsp;

Due to the closure of the Yamuna Bridge, at least two passenger trains have been cancelled while 19 trains have been terminated. Meanwhile, 17 trains have been diverted after&nbsp;water level&nbsp;crossed the danger mark.

Reflecting on the same, East Delhi District Magistrate, K Mahesh told us, "At 9 am, the&nbsp;water level&nbsp;of&nbsp;Yamuna river&nbsp;was 206.03 m, much above the danger mark of 204.83 m. Discharge of water from Hathini Kund Barrage was 24,992 cusecs today, it was about 5 lakh cusecs on 28 July. Hopefully, the&nbsp;water level&nbsp;will dip if rainfall doesn't take place."

The court added that the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) should be applied.

A division bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, observed that as per rules the person has to be sent notice and also should get a hearing in connection to the matter.

The top court directed the NRC co-ordinator, Prateek Hajela, and the central government to submit before the court the process or modalities they plan to follow to file objections. Justice Gogoi said, "We will see if it is fair or not. Then we will decide. If something needs to be done, we will do."

The court told the Attorney General, "You do what you want to do, then we will say. Our silence is neither agreement nor rejection nor assurance."

Attorney General K K Venugopal submitted to the court that the concerned ministry is preparing the SOP to deal with claims and objections and to ensure a fair process. He assured the court that the SOP would be submitted to the court in mid-August.

The apex court was hearing many petitions, including the Assam Samhita and the Social Justice Forum, seeking quashing of the NRC procedure since it was in violation of citizenship rules 2003.

Assam NRC list: Filing objections must be fair, says Supreme court

West Bengal Chief Minister&nbsp;Mamata Banerjee&nbsp;on Tuesday disapproved of the&nbsp;National Register of Citizens (NRC) final draft and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of targeting people in the wake of general elections scheduled for next year.

While addressing a gathering here, Banerjee underscored that India-Pakistan-Bangladesh were one nation before partition. She said who so ever came from Bangladesh to India till March 1971 is an Indian citizen.

"Only to win polls people can't be victimised. Don't you think people whose name isn't in the list will lose a part of their identity? Please understand India-Pakistan-Bangladesh were one before partition. Whoever came from Bangladesh to India till&nbsp;March 1971 is an Indian citizen," she said.

Banerjee also alleged that the BJP through NRC&nbsp;is conspiring against the minorities.

Meanwhile, she also hit out at Chief Minister Sarbanada Sonowal-led government, saying people who recently voted for the incumbent government in the state and at the Centre, have been declared as refugees in their own country.

"What is going on in&nbsp;Assam, the&nbsp;National Register of Citizens (NRC) problem. It is not only the Bengalis, it is the minorities, it is Hindus, it is Bengalis, it is Biharis. More than 40 lakhs people voted yesterday for the ruling party and suddenly today they have been made refugees in their own country," she said.

"I don't want to see my motherland with hope, I don't want to see my motherland divided. We will not allow this to happen in Bengal because we are there. Today these people cannot even vote," she added.

The West Bengal Chief Minister, continuing her tirade against the BJP, said she is shocked that the former President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed's family members' names have not been included in the NRC&nbsp;final draft.

"I am surprised to see that the names of our former President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed's family members are not on the NRC&nbsp;Assam&nbsp;list. What else can I say? There are so many people whose names are not there," she said.

Banerjee is in the capital city to meet Union Home Minister&nbsp;Rajnath Singh&nbsp;to discuss possible amendments which can be brought in the draft.

However, the&nbsp;Supreme Court&nbsp;earlier today averred that all those whose names haven't been included in the list must be given a fair chance to substantiate their claims.

The top court made it clear that publication of draft NRC&nbsp;can't form the basis of action against anyone by the authorities and that the legal process will have to be followed after giving the due opportunity to those whose names are missing.

It further asked the central government to lay down the standard operating procedure on NRC&nbsp;and submit it for approval.

Union Minister&nbsp;Rajnath Singh&nbsp;has also assured the same yesterday following the release of the draft list. "Even someone whose name is not on the list can approach the foreigner's tribunal. No coercive action will be taken against anyone hence there is no need for anyone to panic," Singh told that.

Meanwhile, the&nbsp;Congress&nbsp;had also come down hard on the BJP soon after the release of the draft.

Congress&nbsp;President&nbsp;Rahul Gandhi&nbsp;yesterday dubbed the execution of the critical and highly sensitive exercise as tardy.

The draft list, which was released on Monday, has left out nearly 40 lakh people in&nbsp;Assam&nbsp;incorporating names of 2.89 crore people out of 3.29 crore applicants. The list has been updated for the first time since 1951, to account for illegal migration from nearby Bangladesh.&nbsp;

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday disapproved of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) final draft and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of targeting people in the wake of general elections scheduled for next year. Don't you think people whose name isn't in the list will lose a part of their identity? Please understand India-Pakistan-Bangladesh were one before partition. "I am surprised to see that the names of our former President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed's family members are not on the NRC Assam list. What else can I say? There are so many people whose names are not there," she said. Banerjee is in the capital city to meet Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to discuss possible amendments which can be brought in the draft. However, the Supreme Court earlier today averred that all those whose names haven't been included in the list must be given a fair chance to substantiate their claims. The top court made it clear that publication of draft NRC can't form the basis of action against anyone by the authorities and that the legal process will have to be followed after giving the due opportunity to those whose names are missing. It further asked the central government to lay down the standard operating procedure on NRC and submit it for approval. Union Minister Rajnath Singh has also assured the same yesterday following the release of the draft list. "Even someone whose name is not on the list can approach the foreigner's tribunal. No coercive action will be taken against anyone hence there is no need for anyone to panic," Singh told that. Meanwhile, the Congress had also come down hard on the BJP soon after the release of the draft. Congress President Rahul Gandhi yesterday dubbed the execution of the critical and highly sensitive exercise as tardy. The draft list, which was released on Monday, has left out nearly 40 lakh people in Assam incorporating names of 2.89 crore people out of 3.29 crore applicants. He also termed Modi's telephone call to Khan on his victory in the 2018 polls a welcoming sign to begin a new chapter in relations between the two countries.

The spokesperson for Khan's party Fawad Chaudhry also did not rule out inviting Modi to the swearing-in ceremony.

"A decision about it will be taken by the party in consultation with the foreign ministry in coming days," he said.

London's Westminster court on Tuesday extended the bail of Vijay Mallya in connection with the extradition case.

The matter will be next heard on September 12.

The 62-year-old former Kingfisher Airlines boss is fighting extradition to India on charges of fraud and money laundering amounting to around Rs 9,000 crores.

"The allegations of money laundering and stealing money are completely false," Mallya told reporters outside the court.

"At the end of the day, the courts will decide," he added.

At the last hearing in the case on April 27, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had received a boost in the case as Judge Arbuthnot confirmed that the bulk of the evidence submitted by the Indian authorities will be admissible in the case.

The CBI had submitted a detailed set of documents to the UK court, which includes the case of conspiracy against former IDBI Bank Deputy Managing Director BK Batra, who was referred to in court as a new "villain" of sorts in the case.

As per the Indian authorities' case of conspiracy, Batra reportedly colluded with Mallya in sanctioning some of the loans to the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines without following due diligence procedures.

In the separate extradition proceedings, if the judge rules in favour of the Indian government, the UK home secretary will have two months to sign Mallya's extradition order. However, both sides will have the chance to appeal in higher courts in the UK against the Magistrates' Court verdict.

Mallya's defence team, headed by barrister Clare Montgomery, has disputed the fraud allegations and also submitted further written material from UK-based prisons expert Dr Alan Mitchell, challenging some of the photographs of Barrack 12 of Mumbai Central Prison on Arthur Road, where Mallya is to be held if he is extradited from the UK.

The CPS team, led by barrister Mark Summers, dismissed the additional material as an "attempt to criticise" the information provided by the Indian authorities.

The extradition trial, which opened at the London court on December 4 last year, is aimed at laying out a prima facie case of fraud against Mallya, who has been based in the UK since he left India in March 2016. It also seeks to prove there are no "bars to extradition" and that the tycoon is assured a fair trial in India over his now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines' alleged default of over Rs 9,000 crores in loans from a consortium of Indian banks.

The CPS has argued that the evidence they have presented establishes "dishonesty" on the part of the businessman and that there are no bars to him being extradited from the UK to face Indian courts.

Mallya's defence team has deposed a series of expert witnesses to claim he had no "fraudulent" intentions and that he is unlikely to get a fair trial in India.

Last month, after a prolonged period of silence, Mallya had issued a lengthy media statement, labelling the CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED) charges against him as "untenable and blatantly false".

He has since lost his appeal in the UK's Court of Appeal against a High Court order in favour of 13 Indian banks to recover funds amounting to nearly 1.145 billion pounds.

The High Court order in favour of the State Bank of India (SBI) led consortium had reinforced a worldwide freezing order against Mallya's assets.

It was followed by a related enforcement order last month granting permission to the UK High Court Enforcement Officer to enter Mallya's properties in Hertfordshire, near London, where he is based.

Mallya has since said that he has handed over a full statement of his UK assets to the court and there was no question of the use of force to enter his home, Ladywalk, in the village of Tewin in England.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today took a jibe at the Congress over the no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha against his government, saying he was "thankful" to the party as it allowed him to expose the opposition's hollowness.

In the first BJP parliamentary party meeting in the ongoing Monsoon Session, Modi said the motion brought by the opposition underscored its political immaturity and lack of understanding and substance, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar told reporters.

The meeting also saw top party leaders, including Union ministers Nitin Gadkari and Sushma Swaraj, besides BJP president Amit Shah&nbsp;felicitating the prime minister and also speaking on the matter.

Party sources said Shah targeted the opposition, saying such a motion is brought when a government loses its majority or there is unrest in the country, but there was no reason for it to sponsor such a move, which was comprehensively defeated with 326 members voting against it and only 126 supporting.

Swaraj made a reference to the wide margin to attack the opposition, while Gadkari said it was spreading confusion over a host of issues among the masses and it lacked a real agenda.

The prime minister said the members of the BJP and its allies should be felicitated for the win.

He also praised Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh's speech on the motion and asked party members to take it to the masses, Kumar said.

At the start of the first-ever Indo-Pacific Business Forum, US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross announced that the Trump administration has granted strategic trade authorisation status (STA-1) to India.

"And that's a very important change in their status under our export control regime. It acknowledges the US-India security and economic relationship. What it does is it comes under the Export Administration Rules, and it authorises the export, re-export and in-country transfer of specific items to destinations that the US regards as low risk," Ross noted.

NRC row: Mamata Banerjee to meet Rajnath Singh today 

India requested authorities in Antigua and Barbuda to detain PNB scam fugitive Mehul Choksi after it received information about his presence in the Caribbean island, government sources said today.

They said India was in touch with the island nation following reports of Choksi's presence there and requested the authorities there to restrict his movements by land, sea and air.

"As soon as MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) received information of the likely presence of Mehul Choksi in Antigua, our High Commission in Georgetown had alerted the A&B (Antigua and Barbuda) government, in writing and verbally, to confirm his presence in their territory and detain him and prevent his movement by land, air or sea," a government source said.

Last week, Choksi reportedly claimed he had taken Antigua citizenship last year to expand his business as the passport of the Caribbean nation provides visa-free travel to 132 countries.

Choksi's valid passport was revoked in February 2018.

As part of its efforts to promote products made by tribal people, the government is mulling bottling mahua, a traditional tribal drink, to sell it in the open market under the Van Dhan Initiative.

Flowers of the mahua tree are commonly used by tribal people to brew a drink of the same name which is a major component of any celebration in the communities.&nbsp;

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has inked a MoU with the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED) to develop the traditional drink as a brand and promote in the open market, TRIFED Managing Director Pravir Krishna said.

The official said the ministry also plans to bring other tribal staples such as tamarind and amla into the market in the form of jam.

Krishna said that they are in the process of getting clearances for selling the product as it is an alcoholic beverage.

According to Krishna, ginger and ajwain will also be added to the drink to give it a flavour.

"It will be sold all over the country under the brand name Mahua," he said.

The product will be sourced from tribal areas in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The Van Dhan Scheme is an initiative of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and TRIFED. It was launched in 2018 to improve the income of tribal people through value addition of their products.&nbsp;

The Centre has allocated Rs 500-600 crore for the scheme.

Earlier, TRIFED, which was tasked with setting up of Van Dhan Vikas Kendras to implement the scheme, has used mahua flower syrup to create jam, squash and other non-alcoholic beverages.

All individuals will have sufficient opportunity for the remedies available under the law, the home minister had said, adding that adequate opportunity for claims and objections will be available.&nbsp;

The Home ministry has also advised the state government of Assam that "no action should be initiated by the administration or the police based on the draft NRC."&nbsp;

Will still be treated as Indian citizen if name does not appear in NRC: Assam Chief Minister 

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday clarified that no coercive action will be taken against anyone in case their name do not feature in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) record and that there is no need to panic.

"Even someone whose name is not in the final list can approach the foreigner's tribunal. No coercive action will be taken against anyone, hence there is no need for anyone to panic," Singh told media.

The minister also stated that some people are unnecessarily trying to create an atmosphere of fear.

Assam Chief Minister <a href="http://wionews.com/india-news/will-still-be-treated-as-an-indian-citizen-if-name-does-not-appear-in-nrc-assam-chief-minister-155588">Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday</a> asked people to not spread rumours regarding the National Register of Citizens. Sonowal stated that there is no need for people to panic in case their names do not feature in the record.

"It has been specified by the central as well the Assam government that they can apply for it through 'claims and objections forms'," Sonowal told media.&nbsp

"People shouldn't believe rumours. Even if someone's name doesn't appear in NRC, he'll be treated as an Indian citizen and never as a foreigner. No one will have to go to any detention camp. Illiterate people will be helped by Assam government to fill 'Claims and Objections' forms," Sonowal further added.&nbsp

No coercive action will be taken against anyone, no need to panic: Rajnath Singh on NRC

Several public properties including six buses were set on fire in Maharashtra's Pune by agitators demanding reservation for Marathas in jobs and education.&nbsp;

After violence in Chakan area of Pune today, orders prohibiting assembly of more than four persons at a place were imposed to restore law and order, Pune district collector Naval Kishor Ram said.

Some Maratha organisations had given a call for a bandh today in Chakan area and a rally was carried out.&nbsp;

The politically-influential community, constituting around 30 per cent of the state’s population, has been agitating to press their demand for reservation in jobs and education.

Amid the continuing agitation, the Opposition Congress today approached Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao, urging him to direct the Devendra Fadnavis government to announce a decision on the reservation issue immediately.&nbsp;

In Chakan, an industrial hub 40 km from the Pune city, protesters indulged in stone-pelting and torched some public transport buses and private vehicles, a senior police officer said.

Meanwhile, a Congress delegation, led by state unit chief Ashok Chavan, met the Governor in Mumbai this afternoon and asked him to instruct the state government to immediately withdraw cases filed against “innocent” agitators during the recent Maratha quota protests. In a memorandum, the party said the government would be to blame if a decision on the quota issue is not announced immediately and if the law and order situation in the state deteriorates.

The delegation, which also included Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil and former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, accused the state government of dilly-dallying on the issue. “The position of the BJP and the Shiv Sena over quota is vague. Therefore, no concrete decision has been taken on reservations to Marathas, Muslim, Dhangar, Mahadev Koli and Lingayat communities. The government wants to keep these issues pending,” the memorandum said.

“In such a scenario, we urge you to intervene and instruct the government to declare its decisions regarding reservations of these communities without any delay,” it added. The community had earlier taken out silent marches across the state to highlight their demands, prominent among them being that of reservation. However, their latest round of agitation has taken a violent turn.

TRAI chief RS Sharma's daughter Kavita Sharma on Monday received a threat mail, warning her of "regretful consequences if she didn't respond".

In the email, the sender warned her that the bank details of TRAI chief’s account had been allegedly hacked and if a ransom were not paid, then all the personal information of Sharma would be made public.&nbsp;

The email states, “By posting a challenge on social media, RS Sharma has turned out to be an embarrassment to the nation and put a bounty on his accounts for hackers.” The sender also threatened Kavita of hacking Sharma’s mobile and making all the sensitive information public.

Three Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were injured in a grenade attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag town on Monday.

"Three CRPF jawans injured in this explosion have been shifted to hospital and the area has been cordoned off for searches," the officer added.&nbsp;
