Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched a fresh attack on Pinarayi Vijayan-led Communist government in Kerala accusing it of disrespecting all aspects of Kerala's culture.

''The issue of the Sabarimala Temple has caught the attention of the entire nation. The people of India are seeing the manner in which the Communist Government of Kerala is disrespecting all aspects of Kerala’s culture,'' Modi said addressing a public rally in Thrissur, Kerala.

Modi alleged that neither the Congress nor the Communists have any concern for women empowerment.

''Let me tell you, neither the Congress nor Communists have any concern for women empowerment. If they did, they would not be opposing NDA's efforts to end Triple Talaq,'' Modi said.

India has had many women CM, but has even one of them been a Communist leader, Prime Minister added.

India’s energy needs are growing, so is the need to speed up development of oil and gas infrastructure, he said and added ''We're very close to our goal to provide a cooking gas connection to every home. Nearly 6 crore poor women have received free cooking gas connection.''

Speaking about BJP's flagship programme Swachh Bharat mission, Modi said an issue like sanitation, which was never important enough to be high on the priority of previous governments is a ''core focus area for our government''.

The toilet coverage, which was around 38 per cent in 2014 has gone up more than 98 per cent today, he added.

In a bid to enhance its unmanned warfare capability, the Indian Air Force is planning to acquire around 15 more HAROP attack drones which can crash into high-value enemy military targets to destroy them completely.

The Air Force already has an inventory of these drones which are equipped with electro-optical sensors to loiter over high-value military targets such as surveillance bases and radar stations before exploding them.

"A proposal to acquire these attack drones is expected to be discussed by the Defence Ministry at a high-level meeting in the coming week to strengthen the fleet of such drones in the Air Force," Defence sources told ANI.

Once approved, the Indian Air Force would be exercising the option clause in the previous deal signed a few years ago with Israel which is the main supplier of all types of drones to the Indian Air Force including the surveillance machines including the Searcher and the Heron.

India is also discussing the Project Cheetah with the Israelis under which almost all the drones of the three services would be turned into high-quality attack drones and their surveillance capabilities would also be enhanced.

The three forces have a fleet of more than 100 of these unmanned aerial vehicles which have been acquired over the years in different batches.

The forces are also working on developing indigenous combat drones which would be deployed on both the China and Pakistan border once the project is complete.

Americans have been using the combat drones to carry out targeted assassinations of terrorist leaders in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan but the relatively slow unmanned vehicles are not known to be very effective in warfare where the opposition also has a strong air force.

Asserting that no sanyasi (seer) has been awarded Bharat Ratna since independence, Yog Guru Ramdev on Sunday demanded that seers in the country should also be conferred with the highest civilian honour for their contributions.

“I respect all the people who were given Bharat Ratna. Whoever contributes in the developmental works, they should be given Bharat Ratna. If it can be given to players and artistes then why not to a Sanyasi? Is the contribution of Maharishi Dayananda and Swami Vivekananda less than any politician or artiste? Mother Teresa can get it because she was a Christian but no seers because they are Hindus. Is being Hindu a crime in this country?”

Claiming that not even one seer has been awarded the Bharat Ratna since its beginning, he further said, “It is unfortunate that in the last 70 years, not even one sanyasi has been awarded Bharat Ratna, be it Maharishi Dayananda Saraswati or Swami Vivekananda, Shivakumara Swami Ji. All these saints who have contributed so much must also be conferred with the Bharat Ratna. Many seers have given education to crores of children. So, Hindu sanyasis who have contributed should also get the Bharat Ratna".

The Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award accorded in India.

This year, former President Pranab Mukherjee, late legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika and late social activist Nanaji Deshmukh were the recipients of the coveted honour.

A number of politicians from Karnataka, including former chief minister Siddaramaiah and deputy chief minister G Parameshwara, had also raised demand to confer Bharat Ratna for late Siddaganga Mutt seer Shivakumara Swami.

“I would like to tell my friends in media that if there is such a statement, then they should cross check it. I used the term ‘chocolaty’ face for Bollywood actors. I did not use it for any political leader,” he said.

Taking a dig at the Congress party for appointing Priyanka Gandhi as a General Secretary and in-charge for the party affairs for eastern Uttar Pradesh for the coming Lok Sabha elections, Vijayvargiya on Saturday had said, “This shows the dearth of self-confidence in them. They don’t have any leader. That is why they want to contest the coming elections by banking on chocolaty faces. Somebody takes Kareena Kapoor’s name while others ask for Salman Khan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday hit out at critics of the 10 per cent quota for the economically weaker sections, saying some persons in Tamil Nadu were creating an "atmosphere of suspicion and mistrust" to serve their interest.

Sounding the poll bugle in Tamil Nadu at a well-attended BJP rally here, he took a swipe at the proposed grand alliance of the opposition parties, saying they had set aside their differences to "remove this watchman," in the coming Lok Sabha polls.

He also said his government was taking effective steps to rid the country of corruption and nepotism.

"Any person who has cheated or looted the country shall be brought to justice," Modi said in an apparent reference to economic offenders -- Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi who are wanted in connection with defaulting on huge bank loans.

Asserting that the provision of 10 per cent quota to economically weaker sections (EWS) in the general category will in no way impact the existing reservation benefits for Dalits, Tribals and others, Modi urged the youth to "reject forces of negativity."

The EWS quota had been earmarked with the 'spirit' of providing opportunities to all in education and employment.

"This decision has been taken in such a way that it doesn't affect Dalit, tribals," and others, he said.

"It is unfortunate that an atmosphere of suspicion and mistrust is being created by some people in Tamil Nadu to serve their interest," he said.

Opposition DMK and some other parties in the state have opposed the 10 per cent quota, saying social backward alone should be the criterion for reservation.

The DMK has moved the Madras High Court challenging the Constitution amendment providing for 10 per cent EWS quota.

The Prime Minister said "Narendra Modi will firmly stand with the poor," drawing thunderous applause from the crowd.

"The overall air quality over Delhi is moderate, purely attributed to rainfall. With overall Air Quality Index on Saturday recorded at 211 in the capital," the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) said.

A Pakistani delegation, led by its Indus Water Commissioner Syed Muhammad Mehar Ali Shah, is all set to arrive on Sunday for a 5-day visit to visit Chenab basin on the Indian side. The visit is Indus Water Treaty-mandated and will take place from January 27-February 1.

The Pakistani delegation will arrive on Sunday via Wagha border and will be received by officials of Central Water Commission and Punjab government. The delegation will be received by India's commissioner for Indus Water PK Saxena in Delhi later in the day. They will be in Jammu from 28th to 31st January.

The visit was to take place in October of 2018 but was postponed due to local elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

In August 2018, during the 115th meeting of the Permanent Indus Commission in Lahore, India and Pakistan agreed to undertake the treaty-mandated tours of the Indus basin on both sides.

Under Article VIII of the Indus Water Treaty, the Commissioners of both the countries are mandated to undertake a general tour of the rivers in order to ascertain facts connected to various developments and works on the rivers on both sides.

This visit has to happen every five years. So far, no tour could be held in the current five-year block which ends in March 2020.

The development comes when Pakistan has been stopping Indian cargo flights to Afghanistan. Earlier this week, Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) targetted an Indian boat off the Gujarat coast leading to the death of an Indian fisherman. India strongly condemned the incident and raised the matter with Islamabad.

Indian foresters have begun relocating around 300 crocodiles to allow a seaplane service for visitors to the world's tallest statue, the newly erected 182-metre (597-feet) Statue of Unity.

The reptiles, the largest around three metres, are being lured into metal cages and moved elsewhere in the western state of Gujarat on the back of pickup trucks.

So far about a dozen had been extracted "from dyke number three of the reservoir which has been identified as a probable site for the seaplane jetty," a source told AFP on Friday.

Local forestry official Anuradha Sahu said the instruction had come from the state government "for safety reasons as the tourist influx has increased" to the riverside edifice.

The statue of independence hero Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel -- a pet project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi -- is more than twice the size of the Statue of Liberty. It was completed last October at a cost of $400 million.

Bittu Sahgal, editor of wildlife magazine Sanctuary Asia, criticised the moving of the endangered crocodiles, tweeting: "Have we collectively lost our minds?"

Priyavrat Gadhvi, a member of the state wildlife board, said any relocation should have been preceded by a thorough scientific analysis.

The statue is located in a remote stretch in Narmada district, with the nearest city Vadodora being about 100 kilometres away and Gujarat's main city, Ahmedabad, is more than 200 kilometres away.

There are no trains, and most tourists take a bus on a four-lane highway from Vadodora to reach the landmark.

"My contribution is recognised," said former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientist Nambi Narayanan on Saturday, this year’s Padma Bhushan awardee who had once been labelled as a spy and was arrested too.

Narayanan told ANI, ''I am happy. In fact, I was known to the public as a spy and then I became the victim of a spy. So, I became more popular in that sense subsequently. What I wanted was the contribution I made to the country should be recognised."

ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan, former Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker Kariya Munda, Actor Mohanlal, veteran journalist Kuldeep Nayyar (posthumous), Indian mountaineer Bachendri Pal and Lok Sabha MP Hukmdev Narayan Yadav have been selected for the Padma Bhushan award.

"In fact, in October 1994, we launched the PSLV. It was moving with the engine which I have developed. But immediately within 10-15 days, I was arrested. Till date 44 PSLVs were flown successfully using the engine I developed," he said.

"But, honestly, nobody mentioned this anywhere. I felt sad about it but today this award gives a feeling that my contribution is recognised. In other words, I am happy to be known as the man who has contributed rather than a victim of spy," said Narayanan.

Former ISRO scientist Narayanan was arrested in an alleged espionage case in November 1994.

"If you think that something is right and the truth, then you should stick to it. You should not surrender to pressure or influences. That was what I was doing. It is not easy to fight a powerful government and but my happiness is the concerned governments understood the truth. I am happy that they corrected themselves," Narayanan added.

The scientist was reportedly accused of selling vital Indian space technology secrets to Pakistan. The Supreme Court had, however, cleared him of spy charges and termed his arrest as “needless” and “unnecessary.”

Campaigning for the January 28 bypoll to the Jind assembly constituency, witnessing a high-stake, multi-cornered contest, chiefly among the ruling BJP, opposition INLD, besides the Congress and fledgling JJP, ended Saturday.

The campaign period for the multi-cornered contest ended at 5 pm, restricting candidates now only to door-to-door canvassing for seeking votes from about 1.75 lakh voters of the constituency.

A total of 21 candidates are in the fray for the polls.

A direct fight between the BJP and the opposition INLD initially, the bypoll turned into a high-stakes contest after the Congress fielded Jat leader and AICC communication in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala, while the Jannayak Janta Party, a breakaway outfit of Chautala family-led INLD, nominated political greenhorn Digvijay Singh Chautala.

The by-poll was necessitated following death of INLD legislator Hari Chand Midha last year.

Ruling BJP is banking on Middh'a son Krishan Middha, a Punjabi, while INLD has nominated local Jat leader Umedh Singh Redhu, who is also backed by a faction of prominent Kandela Khap (a caste council).

The bypoll has brought rare unity among Congress rank as party's top leaders, including former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, state party chief Ashok Tanwar, late CM Bhajan Lal's son Kuldeep Bishnoi, CLP leader Kiran Choudhary and party MP Kumari Selja actively campaigned for Surjewala.

For BJP candidate Middha, the campaigners included right from Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to Cabinet ministers Rambilas Sharma, Capt Abhimanyu and Manish Grover, besides Union minister Choudhary Birendar.

The campaigning was dominated by charges and counter-charges with arch-rivals BJP, Congress, INLD and JJP eyeing the results as a self-assessment exercise in what has been dubbed by many a "semi-final" ahead of Lok Sabha polls this year.

While Surjewala has sought vote promising all-round progress of Jind, Midha has sought to bank upon the developmental works done by the BJP government in Haryana.

During campaigning, Khattar criticised Surjewala claiming he would spend most of his time in Delhi. The chief minister also attacked the JJP blaming it for split in the Chautala family.

Political pundits, however, see the poll balance tilting in favour of the BJP owing to likely division of the dominant Jat community's votes among Surjewala, Redhu and Digvijay.

The fledgling JJP got a boost with the AAP announcing its support to it and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal addressing a rally Saturday, canvassing for JJP nominee Digvijay Singh Chautala.

Kejriwal told electorate that he decided to give support to JJP after he found the two younger members of Chautala family "selfless".

The cancellation of INLD supremo Om Prakash Chautala's furlough from Tihar jail on a Delhi government directive in the run up to the poll too led to a verbal duel between the warring factions of Chautala family.

Om Prakash Chautala hit back at his grandsons Dushyant and Digvijay, accusing them of "back-stabbing" him and "conspiring" with AAP to keep him out of the campaigning.

In a bid to garner voters' sympathy, Om Prakash Chautala's wife Sneh Lata released her video footage, saying "if I die tomorrow, the four persons - Ajay, his wife Naina and their sons Dushyant and Digvijay, must not touch my body."

Naina, however, shot back asking if anybody has ever heard of someone cursing her own sons and grandsons.

Poll pundits say Lok Suraksha Manch candidate Vinod Kumar Arshi too has the potential to play spoilsport in multi-cornered contest.

Arshi, a Brahmin leader from Jind is a nominee put up by BJP's rebel MP from Kurukshetra, Raj Kumar Saini who is Manch's patron. Saini has an influence among voters from OBC communities.
