The New Germany Envoy to India Walter J Lindner on Tuesday presented his credentials to President Ram Nath Kovind. He presented his credentials in Hindi and while speaking to WION lauded the Indian elections, calling elections process a world record in organising elections.

WION: You presented credentials to President in Hindi. Why so?

Walter J Lindner: Because I think, one should respect the country where you are stationed, I tried my whole life to do that, to pick up the language. Now I'm here for 6 weeks, I might not be fluent, but ask me the same question in 6 months, I will reply in Hindi. This is an act of respect, it is a great language.

WION: How do you see the ties between the two countries?

Walter J Lindner: Chancellor will come again to India, at the end of the year. we have not yet fixed the date, but it will be October and November. We have a lot of common interest. One is multilateralism, other is the maintenance of peace, other is UN system, fight against terrorism, the future of technology, future of work like what we will do in 20 years with things going automatic, artificial intelligence. There are so many things both of us are in the same wavelength.

WION: Germany has backed India on the issue of terror. How do both countries plan to tackle the issue?

Walter J Lindner: We will work together very closely in the UN and we will keep informed bilaterally. I will see colleagues in the foreign ministry. So we will see, what's on the agenda and how can we have a common position. As I said, we are both of the conviction that terrorism is something which has to be eradicated from the planet. Maybe it is not possible, we have to do everything we can.

WION: How do you see Indian elections and expectations from the new government?

Walter J Lindner: First of all what we have seen is the biggest elections on this planet in humankind. Never before so many people have voted, and the way it was organised, all these voting machines and all these different voting dates. Its a world record in organising elections. So congratulations. We are confident whoever wins will have strong ties with Germany and will continue the close cooperation.

A special court here has granted an exemption to the 2008 Malegaon blast case accused Pragya Singh Thakur, Lt. Col. Prasad Purohit and Sudhakar Chaturvedi from appearing before it this week.

When the matter was taken up by the special NIA court on Monday, the three accused filed applications through their lawyers seeking exemption from appearance.

While Thakur and Chaturvedi said they are busy with preparations for the upcoming results of the Lok Sabha polls, which they had contested, Purohit cited personal difficulties. The court allowed the applications.

The court also allowed an application filed by lawyers of the accused persons to visit the blast site in Malegaon, a town about 200 kilometres from here in Maharashtra’s Nashik district.

Last week, the special NIA court, which is conducting a trial against seven accused in the case, had directed all of them to appear before it at least once a week.

It then said an exemption would be granted if cogent reasons were submitted.

Thakur, the BJP nominee from Bhopal Lok Sabha Seat, said in her application that as a candidate, she would have to fulfil certain procedures of the Election Commission, including nominating her agents for the counting of votes in her constituency on May 23.

Chaturvedi, who fought the election as an Independent from Mirzapur Seat in Uttar Pradesh, cited the same reason.

Currently, the court is recording the testimony of witnesses in the case. Besides these three, the other accused in the case are Major (retired) Ramesh Upadhyay, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Dwivedi and Sameer Kulkarni. They are all out on bail.

The accused persons are facing trial under various sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

They have been charged under UAPA Sections 16 (committing terrorist act) and 18 (conspiring to commit terrorist act). They are facing charges under Sections 120(b) (Criminal Conspiracy), 302 (Murder), 307 (Attempt to murder), 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt) and 153(a) (promoting enmity between two religious groups) of the IPC.

The accused have also been charged under relevant sections of the Explosive Substances Act.

India's top court, The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a petition by former Kolkata police Chief Rajeev Kumar who wanted a special bench to hear his request to extend his arrest shield.

No reprieve for Bengal police chief Rajeev Kumar from Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to set up a special Bench to hear the plea of former Kolkata police chief Rajeev Kumar who sought an extension of the seven-day protection against arrest in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam case, ANI reported.

Kumar had sought an extension of the time due to strike by lawyers in Kolkata.

Rajeev Kumar’s protection that began on May 17, will end on Friday – May 24.

On Monday, Kumar had approached the apex court seeking an extension of seven days of protection from arrest given to him by the apex court. In his petition before the SC, Kumar has cited strike of lawyers in West Bengal as the reason for the extension.

Earlier on Friday, the SC had vacated its order granting protection from arrest to former Kolkata police commissioner in the Saradha chit fund scam case. The SC, however, ruled that its February 5 order granting interim protection to Kumar will continue for seven days from Friday. An SC bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi also allowed Kumar to seek bail from a competent court and directed the CBI to follow the law of land in this case.

Talking to media, one of Kumar's advocates said that as per the SC order, the CBI cannot arrest Kumar in the next seven days. "We have withdrawn the protection given to Rajeev Kumar vide order dated February 5," the court said while pronouncing the order. Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who was also part of the bench headed by the CJI and Justice Deepak Gupta, had passed the judgment.

Pronouncing the operative part of the order, Justice Khanna had said, "We are leaving it to the CBI to act in accordance with the law. Our February 5 order will continue for seven days from today to enable Rajeev Kumar to approach the competent court for relief. We have expressed our concern as to what has happened in the matter."

The CBI has accused Kumar of tampering with the evidence in Saradha chit fund scam in order to protect politicians. It is interesting to note that the SC had also expressed concern on February 5 over the manner in which the chit fund scam case has been handled. "We would withdraw the protection given to Mr Rajeev Kumar, former Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, vide our order dated February 5, 2019 restraining the CBI from arresting him and thereby, leave it open to the CBI to act in accordance with the law," an SC bench comprising CJI Gogoi, Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Sanjiv Khanna had said.

US-based fast food McDonald's has dropped many items - like McAloo and Gilled Chicken Wrap - from the menu of the 13 stores, which it has reopened in Delhi-NCR after its agreement with partner Vikram Bakshi to acquire Connaught Plaza Restaurants Pvt Ltd (CPRL).

The company has also taken Maaza beverage off the list, a fruit-based drink brand from Coca-Cola.

"To ensure a more consistent McDonald's India experience across the different regions, we have permanently removed some of the least popular items including the McAloo Wrap, Chicken McGrill, Egg Wrap, Grilled Chicken Wrap, and Maaza beverage. The rest of the menu remains the same," Barry Sum, director of corporate relations for Asia at McDonald's told PTI.

Besides, the menu boards, tray mats, and packaging have a new design to be consistent with McDonald's simple, modern brand identity, he added.

"Paper packaging and wooden utensils are also Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified to support McDonald's global commitment to sustainability," Sum added.

According to the company, customers visiting the 13 re-opened stores will experience an enhanced service experience with more customised hospitality, refreshed menu boards, merchandising and packaging.

CPRL, after its agreement with estranged partner Vikram Bakshi to transfer his share in the JV to the US-based firm, had temporarily shut down its 160 stores.

On Sunday, CPRL, which is now controlled by McDonald's, announced re-opening of 13 restaurants in Delhi-NCR.

The company plans to re-open the rest stores "over the coming days and weeks", McDonald's India had said in a statement.

Commander-in-chief of Indian Army's Northern Command, Lt General Ranbir Singh, on Monday confirmed that the Indian Army had undertaken a surgical strike in September 2016.

"A few days ago DGMO said in a reply to an RTI that the first surgical strike happened in September 16', I don't want to go into what political parties say, they'll be given an answer by government. What I told you is a statement of fact," Lt General Ranbir Singh said.

Indian Army commandos had conducted surgical strikes deep into Pakistani territory across the Line of Control(LoC) on September 29th, 2016 to destroy terrorist launchpads. The strikes were in response to the attack on a military base in Uri on September 18 in which 17 Army soldiers had lost their lives.

Addressing a press conference, Ranbir Singh added that Balakot air strikes in Februrary were a "major achievement".

"Air strikes by IAF on Balakot terrorist infrastructure was a major achievement, wherein our aircraft went deep into enemy territory and struck terror launchpads. Pakistanis carried out air operations the following day, however, they were given a befitting reply," he said.

Lt General Ranbir Singh also informed that the Army was able to neutralise 86 terrorists during various operations, with 20 apprehended. "We've also been able to bring back many of them to the mainstream," he said.

The Northern Command chief, however, added that locals in Kashmir joining militancy "remains a matter of concern". He asserted that Pakistan feels "absolutely starved" because of effective counter infiltration grid of the Indian Army.

"However, that realization is coming in the youth and people of Kashmir that we do not want to become fodder by the Pakistani agencies and various inimical elements, who want to promote terrorism and violence in J&K," he said.

"I am sure with the help of all the stakeholders we will be able to arrest this trend in the times to come as we are doing now," he added.

"Successful infiltration from the Line of Control(LoC) is virtually becoming very difficult. Therefore, for them to continue with this militancy, they want that the local content should be increased," he said.

Former Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar Monday moved the Supreme Court seeking an extension of the seven-day protection granted to him by the apex court in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam case.

Kumar's lawyer mentioned the matter for urgent listing before a vacation bench comprising Justices Indira Banerjee and Sanjiv Khanna. The council said the apex court had on May 17 granted seven days time to Kumar to approach the competent court for legal remedies but they want an extension of time as lawyers in Kolkata courts are presently on a strike.

Kumar's counsel said four days have already elapsed and they needed time to approach the competent court in Kolkata. However, the bench said since the May 17 order was passed by a three-judge bench, they can approach the registry for the listing of the matter before an appropriate bench.

"You are a lawyer and you know that CJI is the master of roster," the bench told Kumar's counsel and asked him to approach the registry for the listing of the matter. On May 17, a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi had withdrawn the protection from arrest granted to Kumar by its February 5 order.

The apex court, on February 5, had granted protection from arrest to Kumar while directing him to appear before the CBI and "faithfully" cooperate with the investigation of cases arising out of the scam.

The bench, however, had said the protection to Kumar would continue for seven days from May 17 to enable him to approach the competent court for relief. The top court had also expressed concern over the confrontation between the CBI and the West Bengal Police in the case, saying that "at the receiving end are silently waiting for lakhs of a small town and rural investors who have been deprived and looted of their savings".

The bench had said the situation was grim as both sides have hardened their stand and there was no administrative mechanism in place to avoid and resolve such conflicts between two wings of the police force in the country.

It had noted that the CBI had issued three notices on October 18 and October 23, 2017, and on December 8, 2018, asking Kumar to appear and join the investigation, but he had not responded.

The court had also noted that the West Bengal government and Kumar have alleged "political vendetta" and have made allegations against M Nageswara Rao, former interim CBI director. In its order, the court had said the CBI had alleged non-cooperation and charged WB state police with "obfuscating investigation by causing impediments and roadblocks with a view to protecting big names and members/leaders of the ruling party in the State of West Bengal".

The court had noted the CBI's claim of having substantial material implicating Kumar, the then Commissioner, Bidhannagar Commissionerate, of connivance and complicity with the principal accused.

Earlier, Kumar in an affidavit before the court had alleged that he was targeted by the CBI in the chit fund case due to "mala fide intent" and "conflict of interest" of Rao as his family members were under the scanner post-demonetisation.

The Election Commission on Wednesday had ordered the removal of Kumar, who was posted as Additional Director General, CID, in West Bengal for allegedly failing to control incidents of violence in the state and had asked him to report to the Union Home Ministry on Thursday.

Foreign media on exit polls predicting second term for BJP

The Delhi unit of the BJP Sunday requested the commissioner of police to review the security cover of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, a day after the AAP chief alleged that he could be assassinated by police personnel deployed for his security.

In a letter to Commissioner of Delhi Police Amulya Patnaik, BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said Kejriwal's statement was "damaging" for the morale of his security staff as well as the entire police force in the national capital.

He also sent copies of the letter to Home minister Rajnath Singh and Delhi's Lt Governor Anil Baijal.

Kejriwal on Saturday had alleged that the BJP was after his life and said he could be assassinated like former prime minister Indira Gandhi by police personnel deployed for his security.

Recently, the Delhi chief minister had also told a news channel in Punjab that the BJP was after his life and they would "murder" him one day.

Kapoor in the letter said, "I believe this statement coming from a chief minister is highly damaging for the morale of not only his security guards but the entire Delhi Police force personnel who are deployed for VIP security".

He asked for psychological counselling of Delhi Police personnel deployed for Chief Minister Kejriwal's security, saying they must be "depressed" over his allegations.

"All security staff deployed around Kejriwal should be given psychological counselling and Delhi should immediately review his security cover".

Delhi Police should seek an apology from Kejriwal for his allegations and if he refuses his security cover should be withdrawn, Kapoor said.

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) should be implemented soon in Delhi if the people do not want to live under the fear of attack from illegal Rohingya immigrants, said BJP MP Manoj Tiwari on Saturday.

"I got to know that the attackers were from a Bangla speaking community, like Rohingyas. The people for whom murder, fighting and crimes are a daily affair. I think NRC should be implemented in Delhi as soon as possible to throw these illegal immigrants out, that is the only way to keep our citizens safe," Tiwari told ANI.

He was talking after meeting the family of late Dhruv Raj Tyagi in Moti Nagar area, who was murdered by goons on Sunday night. The victim's son was also attacked and is undergoing treatment. All four accused in the case were arrested by the police.

Tiwari expressed grief and solidarity with the family and demanded setting up of a fast track court to ensure speedy justice to the family.

"The family is suffering from a great loss. A daughter mistreated in front of her father, the father died while the son also sustained injuries. This is unacceptable. This case should be handled by a fast track court. I also demand the death penalty for the accused. They have carried out a barbaric act which can only be done by people who have criminal intent," he said.

Tiwari also lashed out at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and accused him of playing divisive politics.
