A Delhi court on Monday summoned Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia to appear before it on July 16 in connection with a defamation suit filed by Delhi BJP leader Vijender Gupta.

The court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Samar Vishal had earlier recorded the statement of Gupta and two witnesses.

Gupta had filed the suit against Kejriwal and Sisodia for allegedly "maligning" his image after they accused him of being part of an alleged "conspiracy" to kill the AAP chief.

While recording his statement before the court, Gupta said that he was "deeply hurt by the defamatory and false allegations made by both the accused persons".

The BJP MLA claimed that the false allegations were made to impact the Lok Sabha elections in Punjab which were held in the last phase.

He submitted that after both the AAP leaders, who have millions of followers on Twitter, tweeted, he started receiving calls from people.

"Kejriwal's tweet was re-tweeted around 3000 times while Sisodia's tweet was re-tweeted around 1300 times," Gupta contended.

During the Lok Sabha elections, Kejriwal, by citing a tweet by Gupta, had told a Punjabi news channel that BJP was trying to get him killed by his own Personal Security Officer (PSO).

In his tweet, Gupta had said, "Before the slapgate on May 4, @ArvindKejriwal asked the liaison officer to lift the security cover from his vehicle. The chief minister`s instruction is registered in the daily diary entry (of the police). Since I had disclosed about it, AAP could not get electoral gain of the incident. Out of frustration, Kejriwal says PSO reports to BJP."

Quoting Gupta's tweet, the chief minister had replied, "Why BJP wants to get me killed? What have I done? I am not constructing schools and hospitals for the people of the country."

He had said, "This is the first time when positive politics has started on schools and hospitals in the country. BJP wants to finish it. But I will fight till my last breath."

On Sunday, four Indian Fishing Boats from West Bengal - Dashabhuja, Babaji, Joyjogiraj and Nayan from Bengal with 61 crew members and fishermen on board capsized in Bangladesh waters.

Of these 61 fishermen, 36 were rescued by the IFB in the vicinity. However, as many as 25 crew members still remain missing.

The Indian Coast Guard received a telephonic message from Assistant Director (Fisheries Department), Diamond Harbour regarding the four fishing boats capsizing. Immediately, the Indian Coast Guard deployed a Hovercraft, Fast Patrol Vessel and ICG aircraft in the Indian waters.

On the other hand, the Indian Coast Guard requested Bangladesh Coast Guard to assist in rescue operations in Bangladesh waters.

A day ago, in a joint operation by Indian Coast Guard and Bangladesh Coast Guard, an Indian Fishing Boat (IFB) with 13 crew members onboard was rescued despite the rough sea conditions.

“After receiving information from AD Fisheries, Diamond Harbour, Indian Coast Guard Regional Headquarters at Kolkata, immediately contacted Bangladesh Coast Guard West Zone Headquarters at Mongla and requested them to rescue Indian Fishing Boat ‘Tara Shankar’ and save lives of the 13 crew members on board,” said a senior official of Indian Coast Guard.

Bangladesh Naval ship on patrol was diverted and one Bangladesh Coast Guard ship was sailed from Mongla harbour for search and rescue. Bangladesh Navy ship located the Indian disabled boat with the 13 crew members onboard in position near Mongla Fair Way Buoy and rescued them.

“Despite the very high sea conditions (against 5-6 metres of swell) Bangladesh Naval ship took Indian disabled boat under tow and brought it to Pussur River mouth where more than 100 Indian Fishing Boats were also sighted. These Indian Fishing Boats had taken shelter in view of the rough seas and inclement weather at sea,” added the official.

All the 114 Indian Fishing Boats returned to the Indian side through Haribhanga river in the intervening night of July 7-8, 2019.

India has said that a UN report on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is a mere continuation of the earlier "false and motivated narrative".

"The report of the OHCHR is merely a continuation of the earlier false and motivated narrative on the situation in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Its assertions are in violation of India's sovereignty and territorial integrity and ignore the core issue of cross-border terrorism," Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said on Monday.

The report by Office of the High Commission for Human Rights (OHCHR) slammed both India and Pakistan for failing to improve situation in the state, and called for an international probe into violations.

Noting that four major armed groups in J&K are believed to be based on the Pakistan side of the Line of Control, the OHCHR report said, "No steps have been taken to resolve the main issues, including a number of highly problematic legal restrictions." This is a follow-up report by OHCHR on its first-ever report on Kashmir released last year.

"A situation created by years of cross-border terrorist attacks emanating from Pakistan has been 'analysed' without any reference to its causality. The update seems to be a contrived effort to create an artificial parity between the world's largest and the most vibrant democracy and a country that openly practices state-sponsored terrorism," MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said in his statement today.

It is a matter of deep concern that this update seems to accord legitimacy to terrorism that is in complete variance with the UN Security Council (UNSC) positions, he added.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who recently stepped down as the party president, will visit Amethi on Wednesday and hold meetings with party workers.

This will be his first visit to Amethi after Congress's debacle in just-concluded Lok Sabha elections. He will also take feedback from Congress workers to assess the reason behind his party's humiliating defeat.

Rahul had lost Amethi seat to BJP leader Smriti Irani in the Lok Sabha elections. Rahul held the seat for the last 15 years.

The Gandhi scion has made his resignation letter public last week. "It is an honour for me to serve the Congress Party, whose values and ideals have served as the lifeblood of our beautiful nation. I owe the country and my organisation a debt of tremendous gratitude and love, " he had tweeted.

Karnataka: DK Shivakumar, HD Deve Gowda meet amid crisis

Chennai is known as "Detroit of India" since it is the automobile hub of the country. But faced with a severe water crisis, the auto firms are now coming up with newer ways to cut down on water consumption.

Automobile service centres in the city are avoiding the use of water to wash the vehicles. But this doesn't mean that the job is shoddy - vehicles are returned spic and span. What these service centres are using is called the dry wash method.

"For water wash, we spend a minimum of 50 litres of water per vehicle. On average, 35 vehicles are water-washed resulting in wastage of 1500 litres of water. Whereas in a dry wash, we use 700ml of water and 300ml of dry wash liquid. This mixture can be used to clean seven to eight vehicles," said Prabhu Jayaraj, service manager at a Royal Enfield outlet in Chennai.

"We are following the dry wash across all of our service stations in Chennai and intend to do so for the foreseeable future until there is some development in the water crisis," he added.

In the dry wash, compressed air is blown on the vehicles at high speed which clears the dust away. Then the solution is sprayed, after which it can be wiped clean. The method requires less time and manpower.

"If I want to wash my bike at home I usually waste a lot of water. Dry washing is good, especially as we are suffering a water crisis in Chennai. I am really happy to give my bike here for a dry wash," said Deshvar, a Royal Enfield owner.

With hardly any summer rains, availability of water is getting scarce and all four reservoirs that supply Chennai have run virtually dry. But the government says it is taking all the measures necessary to resolve the issue.

"We have seen protests in some areas. Protesters should not disturb the public. Our government is taking steps to solve the water issue soon," Tamil Nadu Water Minister SP Velumani said on Wednesday.

The acute water shortage has forced some schools to shut, companies to ask employees to work from home and hotels to ration water for guests.

The Kancheepuram district to the southeast of the city, which includes the factories of many foreign automakers, saw groundwater levels deplete more than 6 ft (1.88 metres), or three times the state average, to about 20 ft during the year ended May 2019, the data showed.

The issue of leadership in Congress came up briefly at the informal meeting of party leaders here held to discuss the political developments in Karnataka but no names were discussed, party sources said.

The sources said discussions will continue in the coming days ahead of Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting for which no date has been fixed as yet.

Congress Communications chief Randeep Singh Surjewala later said that Rahul Gandhi is the Congress president and will continue to be so till the CWC takes a decision on his resignation.

He said crores of party workers feel that Gandhi was the only person who can lead the party effectively against the BJP which was "disregarding democracy".

"The last decision will be taken by Rahul Gandhi and CWC," he said.

Gandhi had offered to resign at the CWC meeting in May taking responsibility for the party's debacle in Lok Sabha elections and had earlier this week emphasised his decision in a letter released to the media.

Surjewala urged the media not to go by speculations that Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi will not attend the CWC meeting which will be called to discuss the leadership issue.

"Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are the most important part of the CWC. Whenever it is held, all of them will come to attend it," he said.

Surjewala, however, said no discussion was held on the leadership issue at Saturday's meeting and it was also not authorised to do it.

Newly appointed Pakistan High Commissioner to India, Mueenul Haq, will not take part in the second meeting on the operationalisation of the Kartarpur Corridor scheduled to be held on July 14 on the Pakistan side of the border.

"Mueenul Haq will join office in the last week of this month. He will not be participating in the talks on the Kartarpur Corridor on July 14," diplomatic sources in New Delhi told ANI.

Haq succeeds Sohail Mehmood.

The sources said that the Deputy High Commissioner of Pakistan will be present in the meeting along with his country's team.

The second round of talks on the corridor was announced after the re-election of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The first round was held on March 14 on the Indian side of the Attari-Wagah border.

Pakistan is all set to give a presentation on the latest development on the Kartarpur corridor, the sources said.

The Indian side has expressed concern since Pakistan has announced that only 700 Indian devotees could visit Kartarpur Sahib for commemorating Gurpurab -- the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Govind Singh-- after paying the visa fee.

Earlier, the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee had written a letter to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan seeking an increase in the number of devotees to 5000 in a day and allowing them without a visa.

Asked about Modi and Khan jointly inaugurating the corridor before Gurpurab, the sources said, "It is speculation which is in Pakistan. There has been no discussion on it yet."
