Indian envoy to Russia Bala Venkatesh Varma has called the S-400 missile defence system ''the best in the world''.

Speaking to a Russian daily, the envoy said, "We have no doubt that the S-400 is the best anti-aircraft missile system in the world. India is glad to have S-400, made in Russia, in its armed forces."

He was confident that "fulfilment of contractual obligations will continue in accordance with the provisions of the document"

India will be getting all the units of Russian S-400 by April 2023. The announcement was made by the minister of the state of defence Sripad Naik in a written statement in Lok Sabha.

India had signed the missile deal in October 2018 during Russian President Putin's visit. The deal was worth $5 billion ensuring the advanced long-range surface-to-air missile would become a key weapon in India's arsenal.

However, the Trump administration had warned that the deal would have serious implications for India even though no specific details were put forward by the US.

India feared US sanctions under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) instituted by the US Congress on arms purchases from Russia, but it did not transpire after Indian officials communicated India's defence requirements to Trump's officials.

The Indian government in the Parliament said that ''It takes Sovereign decisions based on threat perception, operational and technological aspects to keep the Armed Forces in a state of readiness to meet the entire spectrum of security challenges."

India's external affairs minister S Jaishankar will be visiting Moscow by the end of August during which he will be meeting Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov.

Pakistan is yet to respond to Indian request to for another round of technical talks on Kartarpur Corridor. WION last week reported that New Delhi had requested for the meeting in August first week, for which, according to a source, a reminder has also been issued.

If the talks take place, on the table would be Pakistan build a service road, provision to help pilgrims if an emergency arises till the time bridge on Ravi river is constructed and a mechanism to share details of pilgrims.

"India hopes that Pakistan would respond expeditiously on these proposals in order to operationalise the Kartarpur Corridor in time for the 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev," the source added.

If the talks come to fruition, this will be the fourth round of technical talks between the two countries in 2019. So far, three rounds of meetings have taken place in March, April and May, 2019 between the two countries during which both sides endorsed the crossing point coordinates.

"India had also shared proposals for finalising the agreement on the modalities to operationalise the Kartarpur Corridor," another source added.

Though Pakistan has cut diplomatic and trade ties with India after New Delhi removed special status accorded to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, Islamabad has assured that it remains committed to Kartarpur corridor.

"Kartarpur initiative will continue," Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi announced earlier this week.

When the second round of talks between Indian Pakistan officials took place on July 14, Islamabad agreed to construct the bridge over the old Ravi creek that will allow all-weather pilgrimage to the Gurudwara Kartarpur Sahib throughout the year.

Both sides are keen to open the corridor ahead of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Devji in November 2019. Work is on in full swing on the Indian side with 50 per cent of the work being completed.

Highlighting the role of Tibet in Indo-China friendship, Sun Xiaobo, Deputy Director-General of Foreign Affairs Office in Tibet Autonomous Region, has said that the 'roof of the world' can play an important role in boosting bilateral relations.

"China's relationship with India is on the priority of Chinese diplomacy and Tibet has a very long history of exchanges with India in terms of culture and religion. Tibet can play an important role in promoting relations between China and India," Xiaobo told ANI on Friday.

Highlighting the significance of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra for Tibet, the Deputy Director-General said that pilgrimage is a very important component of exchange between the two countries.

"We all understand the significance of providing better service for Indians, who undertake the pilgrimage in Tibet. We will maintain this policy and do what we can to make Indians visiting Tibet feel at home," Xiaobo said.

Focusing on the future of India-China relations, Xiaobo said that the governments and foreign ministries of both countries have a lot of scope to improve bilateral ties by undertaking exchanges.

"Our two leaders -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping -- also pay great attention in this respect. There are lots of measures ready to be implemented. We are confident that efforts by two governments will create a better future," he stressed.

Thousands of devotees participate in the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through a treacherous route that crosses territorial boundaries of India, Nepal, and China.

According to the schedule for this year, 18 batches will trek across the Lipulekh pass in Uttarakhand while 10 other batches will go via the Nathula route to Sikkim. Each batch will comprise of not more than 50 people.

The Ministry of External Affairs organises the annual Yatra via two different routes - Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand, and Nathula Pass in Sikkim.

While the Liplekh route passes through a very mountainous area, the fully motorable Nathula route that opened a few years ago requires minimum walking and will, therefore, help senior citizens participating in the pilgrimage.

Despite Pakistan's announcement of suspension of Thar Express, the train, which plies every week between Jodhpur and Karachi, is running as per schedule on both sides of the international border on Saturday.

A Railways official told ANI that the train, with 165 passengers including 84 Pakistanis on board, was undergoing customs check at Munabao railway station, the last station in India on the route, and later crossed the border for Zero Point, the last railway station on the Pakistani side.

"The train embarked on its journey at 1 am from Jodhpur and reached Munabao railway station at 6:55 am. It is going through the customs check and will depart for Zero Point. Operations are running normal," CPRO North Western Railway told ANI.

In India, the train originates at Bhagat Ki Kothi railway station in Jodhpur and goes up to Zero Point railway station near the border in Pakistan after undergoing mandatory customs check at Munabao railway station.

In Pakistan, it starts at Karachi Cantonment railway station and stops at Zero Point railway station where passengers undergo customs check. Passengers from both sides change trains, that is, those travelling to Pakistan board a Karachi-bound train while those travelling to India take a Jodhpur-bound train.

The future of the train seems to be in limbo as Pakistan on Friday announced to stop the weekly train after the government scrapped special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan has also suspended the operation of Samjhauta Express, which runs between Delhi and Attari in India and Lahore in Pakistan since 1976 after the Simla Accord between the two countries.

According to DND News Agency, Pakistan Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad announced that Thar Express will be shut down at 12:00 am (midnight) Friday while Samjhauta Express will cease to run from Saturday.

The decision to suspend the two trains is in line with Islamabad's other moves to remonstrate against Indian move, including suspending bilateral trade and downgrading of diplomatic relations.

Indian Railways on Thursday had clarified that the Samjhauta Express has not yet been suspended but Pakistan authorities refused to send their crew to India citing security concern. The train stood in the Wagah side of the border in Pakistan with around 110 passengers yesterday. An Indian engine brought the train from Wagah to Attari.

Calling its steps in Jammu and Kashmir an "entirely internal affair", India has time and again rejected Pakistan's unilateral move to downgrade diplomatic ties and asked Islamabad to review them so that normal channels for diplomatic communications are preserved.

Adventure junkie and host of 'Man vs Wild' Bear Grylls on Saturday reflected on his experience with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former United States President Barack Obama and said it was really heartening to see such powerful men standing up for protecting the environment.

In an exclusive interview just two days ahead of the premiere of the special episode with the Prime Minister, Grylls shared his experience of interacting with both 'iconic leaders'.

"I have had a huge privilege of taking President Obama on a trip to Alaska a few years ago to show him the effects of climate change close up. They were similar, in the sense of being iconic global world leaders, but (trips were in) different terrains. Alaska was very cold, but where we went with Prime Minister Modi was a rainforest, hot and humid. What was similar was that they were there for the same purpose- for driving this message of we have to protect the environment. We have got to back big conservation projects and look after our world," he said.

It was in the year 2016 when Grylls had filmed an episode of his show with Obama in Alaska.

"For me it was really heartening to see such powerful men like Obama and Modi stand up and say together we've got to do this, we have the power to do this. Especially India, it is now almost the largest country in the world, the biggest democracy on the planet and such a strong spirit always in India, where people want to do the right thing," he said.

The show will be a frank and freewheeling journey that will throw light on wildlife conservation, highlighting issues related to environmental change.

Modi stepped into the wild to raise awareness about the environment and animal conservation.

Believing that protecting the environment and conservation is a key role which every human being has to play, Grylls said it is just not about one country but an initiative we must take up collectively.

"It's not one country, it's all of us. I think protecting our environment and conservation is such a key thing that all of us have to do. I was there for that purpose, to try and say listen, together we can do something good here," he added.

Last month, Grylls had shared a 45-second promo of the special episode on Twitter in which Modi is seen interacting with him, riding a dingy and putting together a spear.

"You are the most important man in India. My job is to protect you," Grylls said in the video, covering the Prime Minister's shoulder with a jacket.
