Delhi airport roof collapse: Over 22,000 passengers impacted due to incident

More than 22,000 passengers were impacted by the incident ofthe collapse of a roof at Terminal 1 (T1) of Delhi'sIndira Gandhi International (IGI) airport last week on Friday (Jun28), the news agency ANI reported on Monday (July 1) citing officials. Around21,690 passengers of IndiGo and around 925 passengers of SpiceJet were affected, the officials said.
Last week following the incident,Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) announced that operations at T1 would remain suspended till further notice. The roof and the metallic support beams that held it up crushedthe Terminal 1 departure forecourt early Friday,killing one person and injuring eight others.

Videos shared online showed several cars smashed under the beams.
Civil aviation minister reviews ops at Delhi airport
On Monday,Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu reviewed operations at the Delhi airport. This visit comes a day after Naiduheld a meeting with senior officials from the civil aviation ministry, theDirectorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the DIAL, theBureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), and airline operators.

The meeting focused on reviewing current operations and passenger handling following the transition of flights from Terminal 1 to Terminals 2 and 3.Terminal 1 handles domestic flights, including those by IndiGo and SpiceJet. All operations have been temporarily shifted to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3.
"Inspected the AOCC, IGI Airport, I convened with senior officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, DGCA, BCAS, DIAL, and airline operators to review current operations and passenger handling following the transition of flights from T1 to T2 and T3," Naidu said in a post on X.
During the meeting, Naiduadvised all stakeholders to maintain rigorous standards to ensure seamless operations and prioritise passenger safety. The minister wasinformed of the total number of passengers impacted, facilities like accommodation for alternate flights, and refunds provided to them.
Earlier, Naidu said that awar room has been constituted to ensure refunds or alternate flights for affected passengers.
"The incident that happened at the Delhi airport is very tragic, and I offer my condolences to the one individual who lost his life. Some people were also injured in the incident; they have been taken to the hospital and are undergoing treatment," he added.
