Heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms in Delhi forced 15 IGI Airport flights to divert, while triggering citywide waterlogging, traffic disruption, and an IMD red alert across multiple districts.
As many as 15 flights bound for Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) were diverted on Monday (Aug 24) after heavy rain and thunderstorms hit the national capital, disrupting flight operations and causing waterlogging and traffic snarls across the city. Of the 15 flights, 12 were diverted to Jaipur, while two were redirected to Chandigarh and one to Lucknow. Three of the flights diverted to Jaipur were international services.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for very heavy rainfall in parts of Delhi, while a yellow alert for moderate showers was in place for other districts. South East Delhi, East Delhi, Shahdara, Central Delhi, North East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi, South West Delhi, West Delhi, North West Delhi and North Delhi witnessed heavy rainfall earlier in the day.
The downpour led to waterlogging at several locations and triggered traffic congestion across the capital, affecting road movement during the day.

Delhi is likely to experience multiple spells of rain on Monday (Aug 24). However, weather conditions are expected to turn largely dry from Tuesday, with the IMD forecasting little or no rainfall across most of the capital for the remainder of the week.
For Tuesday (Aug 25), the weather agency has forecast the “possibility of” very light rain during the afternoon. On Wednesday, very light to light rain is expected at a few places before noon, followed by another spell from afternoon to evening at many places. Moderate rainfall is also likely at isolated locations.
