Gujarat Titans (GT) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were set to lock horns in match 63 of the IPL 2024 edition on Monday (May 13) in Ahmedabad. However, the entire game was abandoned due to weather conditions resulting in GT's ouster. As both teams shared a point each, it led to an end of the campaign for Shubman Gill & Co. -- who only had faint hopes of getting into the playoffs -- whereas KKR, the only team to qualify so far, are now assured of a top-two finish in the points table.

Shreyas Iyer-led KKR are at the top spot with 19 points with their closest rivals Rajasthan Royals (RR) at 16. While RR can still get to 20 points, winning their remaining two games, including one against KKR, Kolkata will still end in the top two. Thus, they are assured of a spot in Qualifier 1, also to be held in Ahmedabad next week.

Thus, Harbhajan Singh, multiple-time IPL winner -- and ex-KKR spinner -- opined on his former franchise's chances of lifting the trophy this year.

The opening slots, middle order, fast and spin bowling are all set. They have all the options a good team should have and that is why they are the table toppers."

'He gets frustrated': Ambati Rayudu reveals Jadeja's issue at CSK involving MS Dhoni

Former India coach Ravi Shastri has backed the idea of the Impact Player rule as he thinks fans and players should evolve according to the new trend. The Impact Player rule, first introduced in the IPL 2023, has added a new dimension to T20 cricket as teams have the flexibility to play an extra batter or an extra bowler according to the need of the hour. While it is still under consideration for future IPL tournaments, Shastri has come out in support of the game-changing rule.

Shastri backs Impact Player rule

"The Impact Player [rule] is good. You have to evolve with the times," Shastri told R Ashwin on his YouTube channel. "You know, it happens in other sports as well. It's got tighter finishes. You have to evolve with the times and I think it's a good rule. You saw the number of tight finishes we had in last year's IPL. So, you know, it has made a big difference."

The Impact Player rule has had its own critics while few have also bought into the idea of using it at the international level. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah has hinted that the Impact Player rule is not yet adopted completely by the IPL and will be reviewed in a meeting with the stakeholders.

"You know when any new rule comes in, there will be…people will try and justify why that's not right," Shastri said. "But in time when you see the scores - 200 and 190 - and then like you mentioned individuals grabbing that opportunity and making the most of it, people will start re-looking at how they think about it."

What is the Impact Player Rule?

A team can make changes to its Playing XI once the match has started by permanently substituting a player. The player coming on will be the Impact Player who will be able to bat and bowl and will participate in the rest of the match. The team batting first would often bring a bowling Impact Player in place of a batter, which gives additional force to the bowling.

Vice versa, the team bowling first would bring a batting Impact Player in place of a bowler to strengthen their batting order. This season, players like Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, Jos Buttler and many others have come in as Impact Player for their respective sides in IPL 2024.

Legendary South African cricketer AB de Villiers has hit back after his comments regarding Hardik Pandya's captaincy were seemingly misconstrued. De Villiers expressed disappointment over the issue, adding he loves the way Hardik leads a team.

ABD issued the response after he suggested Pandya's captaincy was "ego-driven" which had brought him success at Gujarat Titans but the seniors in the MI camp were unable to adjust to such a style of captaincy.

"I see there is a lot of activity on X about the comments I made about Hardik Pandya and Mumbai Indians. And it's a shame that journalism and reporting has got so low (laughs). And I am very happy that some of you have pointed it out, taking some of those comments out and leaving the rest," De Villiers said in a video posted on his YouTube channel.

"I very clearly stated and I will state this again -- I absolutely love the way Hardik Pandya plays his game. I love the way he captains. All I can say is, his style of captaincy is something that he has certainly worked on. It's not something that you can just walk out of the door and you are a brave captain."

The former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter said even during his playing days, he had to put on an 'act' in front of the cameras, as Pandya is doing,

"Why I said it's always not genuine is because I played exactly the same way. I was not the soft-spoken, genuine AB de Villiers that I was at my home. The guy you saw on the field was in a way 'an act'. Sometimes, you have to put up a front and show the opposition that you are a force to reckon with."

Rift in MI camp?

A recent Indian Express report, citing sources close to MI stated that senior Indian players of the team viz. Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav held a meeting, voicing their displeasure over Pandya's style of captaincy, suggesting that the team had lost its joy and morale as the season dragged on.

The source said the meeting was necessitated as the team that was captained by Rohit for the last 10 years, was still coming to terms with the change of guard.

Pandya faces criticism

Pandya has invited criticism from pundits for not having a Plan B when things get south for him. Additionally, his tendency to single out players has not gone down well within the MI camp.

Notably, after MI's loss against the Delhi Capitals, Pandya said Tilak Varma should have targeted Axar Patel more and attributed the defeat to a lack of game knowledge.

However, Pandya's criticism felt misplaced as Varma remains Mumbai's highest run-scorer this season and had a fantastic inning, scoring 63 runs off of 32 deliveries.

It's not something that you can just walk out of the door and you are a brave captain." The former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter said even during his playing days, he had to put on an 'act' in front of the cameras, as Pandya is doing, "Why I said it's always not genuine is because I played exactly the same way. I was not the soft-spoken, genuine AB de Villiers that I was at my home. The guy you saw on the field was in a way 'an act'. Sometimes, you have to put up a front and show the opposition that you are a force to reckon with." View this post on Instagram A post shared by AB de Villiers (@abdevilliers17) × Rift in MI camp?
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) assistant coach Lance Klusener has provided the first official communication from the franchise after owner Sanjiv Goenka was caught on camera, having a go at captain KL Rahul. Klusener on Monday (May 13), played down the controversy, saying Goenka's outburst was nothing more than a "robust discussion between two cricket lovers".

The incident took place after SunRisers Hyderabad mauled LSG last week by chasing a 166-run target in under 10 overs. After the match, Goenka could be seen giving an earful to Rahul who somehow kept his composure.

"I don't see any problem with some robust discussion between two cricket lovers. So for us, I guess it's just a storm in a teacup. We love a robust discussion. I think that's how teams get better. So, it's not a big thing for us," Klusener told media during the pre-match conference.

While the former South African cricketer attempted to neutralise the situation, social media has been brewing with anger against Goenka.

Fans commented that keeping the captain accountable was the owner's job but the way it was done could have been avoided. Many suggested that Goenka could have talked to Rahul in a docile manner by sitting across the table in a room.

‘Don’t see any problem’: LSG coach Lance Klusener downplays KL Rahul-Sanjiv Goenka spat

West Indies pacer Kemar Roach has called on his fellow pacers to ruin outgoing England pacer James Anderson's final Test at Lord's in July. Anderson has announced that the first Test of English summer against West Indies will be his last and Roach doesn't want to make it memorable for him.

"First Test match against us… hopefully, we ruin it," Roach said, laughing. "He's highly respected. He's always given me great advice as well. He will go down as one of the greatest to ever do it. I wish him all the best after that Test match, and hopefully he enjoys whatever comes next."

"We've not had the best of times over here in England, so it's more about focusing on us - not what they're going to do for him. He's going to get what he deserves. But it's all about us working hard to get what we deserve, which is a series win over here in England," he added.

The mega event kicks off in the West Indies and USA in June with India placed in Group A along with arch-rivals Pakistan, Ireland, USA and Canada. This will be Rohit's second successive T20 WC as the Indian captain. In the 2022 edition, India ended as semifinalists under Hitman's captaincy in the marquee event held in Australia.

As per a report carried out by Dainik Jagran, Rohit is likely to bid adieu to T20Is and the T20 WC could prove to be his last few appearances in the format. Meanwhile, the report further revealed that Hardik Pandya was picked in India's T20 WC squad not for his performances, which have been ordinary in IPL 2024, but for the fact that the BCCI is looking at him as the future T20I skipper (prompting the BCCI selectors to not only pick Hardik but name him Rohit's deputy in the squad).

While these are all reports, it will be interesting to see if any BCCI senior official or someone from the Indian team management reacts to all these rumours. In another report, it is believed that the BCCI selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar and captain Rohit weren't in favour of including Hardik in the T20 WC squad. Hardik hasn't featured for India since his injury during the ODI WC at home last year. In IPL 2024, he marked his return to competitive cricket but the all-rounder has failed to make a strong impact with both bat and ball.

However, Agarkar and Rohit were pressured to include Hardik in the mix. While the report didn't mention what this pressure was and whom it came from, it is believed that it came from the upper brass within the BCCI who is looking at Hardik as the future Indian captain -- at least in T20Is.

T20 World Cup 2024: Captains with Most Wins in Men’s T20Is

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are now in a precarious position to enter the IPL 2024 playoffs after losing two games heavily on the trot. At present, they are at the sixth spot with 12 points and two games to go. With the race for the fourth spot heating up with each passing day, KL Rahul-led LSG need to get their act straight to make it to the next round. After their ten-wicket defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), in match 57 in Hyderabad, a video went viral where LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka was seen having an animated talk with Rahul. In the clip, Goenka seemed frustrated with his franchise's defeat and had a tough conversation with his captain.

Since the video went viral, a lot of people criticised Goenka for slamming Rahul in front of the camera and not taking out his frustration in the dressing room. Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag also joined the bandwagon and slammed the Lucknow owner. He made a big statement by saying that since the owners are still earning heavy profits, they should not interrupt with the senior team management. Further, Sehwag hinted that given the scenario, Rahul might be tempted to leave LSG ahead of the mega auction later this year.

Talking on Cricbuzz, Sehwag said, "The owner's role should be that when they meet the players in the dressing room or during a press meet, they should only talk to motivate them. But if the owner comes and asks - 'What is going on? What's the problem?' or gets hold of one of the team management members and starts to raise questions about a particular player...see the coaches and the captain run the team, so it is better for these owners not to get involved with players or get angry with me."

I mean, this is a business where you have to do nothing at all. You have guys to take care of that, and irrespective of what happens, you are earning profit. So you're work should only be to motivate the players. What happens is that the player will think that there are other franchises in the IPL, if I leave, someone else will take me. And if you lose a player, your chances of winning are zero. When I left Punjab, they were fifth. They never came fifth in any other seasons."

Rahul-led LSG will lock horns with Delhi Capitals (DC), in New Delhi, in their next clash which will take place on Tuesday (May 14). They will be eager to win their remaining two games to ease their process of entering the playoffs.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was given out for obstructing the field during the Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Sunday (May 12) evening. Jadeja was adjudged out in a rather unconventional manner as he attempted to steal a second run with the match tantalisingly poised for a grandstand finish.

The incident transpired in the 16th over of the match with CSK requiring 22 runs for the win. Facing the penultimate ball of the over bowled by Avesh Khan, Jadeja bunted a short of good length delivery down to third man and called for a double.

However, the fielder arrived on the ball early and released it to wicketkeeper Sanju Samson. Jadeja, meanwhile, set off for the second run, only to be sent back by skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad who had no interest in taking the extra run. Stranded in the middle of the pitch, Jadeja turned and attempted to make a late dash to the crease.

Samson, upon collecting the ball took a shy at the non-striker's stump but only managed to hit Jadeja who was running in front of the stumps. The umpires went upstairs where the third umpire, after multiple replays, concluded that Jadeja had indeed changed his path deliberately to avoid getting runout.

While it looked like Jadeja had no choice to turn around and run in the trajectory he followed, third umpire Anil Chaudhary asserted that the CSK batter had looked behind for the throw from Samson and adjusted his position accordingly.

Dhoni on his future

Dhoni is a five-time champion with CSK, having led the franchise since its inception. Quizzed last year about his retirement after CSK won the final against Gujarat Titans, Dhoni said he wanted to come back for the fans one more time.

“Circumstantially if you see, this is the best time to announce my retirement. But the amount of love and affection I have been shown wherever I have been this year, the easy thing would be for me to say ‘Thank you very much’, but the tough thing for me is to work hard for another nine months and come back and play at least one more season of IPL,” Dhoni told commentator Harsha Bhogle.

"A lot depends on the body, I have 6-7 months to decide. It will be more like a gift from my side, it's not easy for me but that's a gift. The way they've shown their love and affection, I think that's something I need to do for them," he added.

Dhoni underwent a knee surgery and despite playing no professional cricket since then, has been one of the most dangerous death-over batters in the league.

Earlier this season, Dhoni's close friend and former teammate, Suresh Raina, claimed that Dhoni will be back for IPL 2025. Quizzed during a discussion on Jio Cinema if the ex-CSK skipper will turn up in 2025, Raina gave a one-word reply.

"Khelenge (He'll play)," said Raina with a wry smile.

Raina's former Indian teammate RP Singh, sitting beside him also agreed that Dhoni might give the fans another year of his services.

"It doesn't seem like this will be his last season," said Singh.

If CSK do advance to the playoffs, there could be a possibility that the Chepauk crowd might get to witness Dhoni in action again. Qualifier 2 and the big final will be taking place in Chennai - meaning, Dhoni could be there for his swansong.
Qualifier 2 and the big final will be taking place in Chennai - meaning, Dhoni could be there for his swansong. (With inputs from agencies)

The Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season Jasprit Bumrah brought the goods for Mumbai Indians as he got the better of Sunil Narine in a stunning show of bowling display. The match at Eden Gardens had earlier made headlines for delay as rain played spoilsport. However, Bumrah reminded the world why he is one of the best in the business when he dismissed Narine to help Mumbai Indians reduce Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to 157/7 in 16 overs. This also reminded of Glenn Maxwell's dismissal in the BBL where he moved across and was bowled out.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor Gautam Gambhir was left smiling and speechless after a fan asked him not to leave the side in future and dedicated a heartwarming song to him. Narine has amassed 461 runs in 11 matches as an opener at an average of almost 42 and a strike rate of 183. He has also scored three fifties and one hundred in these matches. He's the highest run-getter for his side in the ongoing IPL season.

As for bowling, Narine has chipped in with 14 wickets in 11 games while maintaining a reasonable economy rate of 6.61. Narine is the second highest wicket-taker for his side in the ongoing season after Varun Chakravarthy who has 16 wickets to his name in 11 games.

Match 58 of the IPL 2024 edition saw the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) pull off an impressive 60-run win over Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Thursday (May 9). With this result, RCB continue to stay alive in the playoffs race, with 10 points from 12 games, whereas Punjab are now officially eliminated from the tournament. During the high-scorer in Dharamsala, Virat Kohli made maximum noise with a brilliant 47-ball 92 and also inflicted a run-out with a brilliant direct hit.

During the PBKS run-chase, they started off well and were 114-3 at the halfway mark. Nonetheless, they were soon reduced to 132-5 in 12 overs with in-form batter Shashank Singh being joined by stand-in captain Sam Curran. With not much batting left, the duo had a herculean task to keep their side in the hunt and tried to push the game till the last over. A partnership started brewing between Shashank-Curran before Kohli's fielding, courtesy of his immaculate fitness standards, inflicted a run-out to send Shashank back into the pavilion.

It all happened on the fourth ball of the 13th over, by Lockie Ferguson, when Sam Curran played a short-pitched delivery with soft hands and called for two. Kohli, at the deep, covered a lot of distance and threw the ball at the non-striker's end as a direct hit resulted in Shashank falling short of his crease.

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday (May 10) experienced a run-feast evening as Gujarat Titans (GT) batters Shubman Gill (104) and Sai Sudharsan (103) ran riot with the bat. The pair put together 210 runs for the opening wicket, the highest for Gujarat Titans in the history of the IPL. The occasion was also the third time in IPL history that a team had two batters scoring hundreds in the same innings. The record partnership also helped GT score 231/3 in their 20 overs as CSK were put on the back foot.

GT openers run riot

Batting first, GT batter promoted Sudharsan to the opening spot to partner Gill as they dominated from the start. The pair stitched together 58 runs in the powerplay and were top of their games. Both Gill and Sudharsan were scoring at identical strike rates as they scored their fifties together in the same over. After 10 overs, the GT were 107/0 as Gill and Sudharsan continued their steady progress.

In the 16th over, GT had put up 200 runs on the board with both Gill and Sudharsan scoring their hundreds in the same over. Gill first completed his hundred on the second ball with a four while Sudharsan got his ton on the final ball. This was Sudharsan’s maiden hundred while Gill amassed his fourth century in the IPL.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to release an advertisement for a new head coach for the senior men's team, as disclosed by the board secretary Jay Shah in Mumbai on Wednesday (May 8). It is to be noted that Rahul Dravid -- the current head coach -- accepted the offer to extend his original contract till June this year.
Match 57 of the IPL 2024 edition saw the Pat Cummins-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) return to winning ways with a ten-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Hyderabad on Wednesday (May 8). With the race for the playoffs intensifying with each passing game, Hyderabad mauled Lucknow to get to 14 points and climb to the third spot whereas KL Rahul & Co. need to win their remaining two games after two back-to-back big defeats.

Talking about the game, LSG opted to bat first and rode on Ayush Badoni's 55* and Nicholas Pooran's 48* to post a moderate 165 for 4 as Travis Head's 89* (30) and Abhishek Sharma's 75* (28) helped SRH win without dropping any sweat, chasing the target in just 9.4 overs. After the heavy loss, LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka was seen fuming and had an animated talk with skipper Rahul publicly. The video of the entire discussion went viral on social media platforms, where Goenka can be seen being miffed with the team's performance at a crucial stage of the tournament.

As soon as the video went viral, many claimed that this entire conversation could have been in the dressing room, away from public glare. Talking about Lucknow's position, they are now at the sixth spot with 12 points but have a poor Net Run Rate (NRR); i.e. -0.769. They have two more games to play -- both away encounters versus Delhi Capitals (DC) and Mumbai Indians (MI).

Thus, Rahul-led LSG have a herculean task to win both their remaining games to stand a chance to qualify. After SRH openers Head-Abhishek's unbroken 167-run opening stand, Rahul said at the post-match presentation, "Am lost for words. We have watched that kind of batting on TV. But this is unreal batting. Everything seemed to find the middle of the bat. Kudos to their skills. They have worked hard on their six-hitting skills. They didn't give us a chance to know what the pitch played in the second innings."

He added, "Was hard to stop them as they teed off from ball one. Once you are on the losing side, there are questions marks on the decisions taken. We were 40-50 runs short."

Here is the video: LSG’s owner Sanjeev Goenka is agitated with KL Rahul for the loss against SRH. He has right to be upset but can’t humiliate a senior Indian 🇮🇳 player like this publicly . They didn't give us a chance to know what the pitch played in the second innings." He added, "Was hard to stop them as they teed off from ball one. Once you are on the losing side, there are questions marks on the decisions taken. We were 40-50 runs short."

Speaking ahead of the contest on Thursday (May 9), Fleming said the team is managing the workload of MS Dhoni, who is set to feature in Friday’s match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
South Africa's premier T20 franchise tournament, SA20 is also looking to adopt the 'Impact Player' rule after its successful implementation in the Indian Premier League (IPL), according to a Cricbuzz report.

The introduction of the rule will be on the agenda when tournament organisers gather to plan the 2025 edition.

Notably, the South African organisers were set to introduce the rule in the 2024 edition which concluded in February with the Sunrisers Eastern Cape lifting their second consecutive trophy. However, it was put on hold as the auctions had happened and the franchises hadn't shaped their squads, keeping in mind the Impact Player rule.

What is the Impact Player rule?

IPL introduced the Impact Player rule in 2023, under which a team can name five substitutes at the toss. Once the match starts, depending on the game state, the captain is allowed to use any of the five substitutes and swap them directly with the player who was named in the original playing XI.

However, the introduction of the rule has divided the fans as well as the players. While the rule adds to the theatrics of the game, it has also taken away from the novelty of having proper all-rounders in the team.

Former Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma has called the ‘Impact Player rule’ as something that is taking away a lot from the game for just a little excitement.

“I generally feel that it is going to hold back [development of all-rounders] because eventually cricket is played by 11 players, not 12 players," Rohit said.

“I'm not a big fan of impact player (rule). You are taking out so much from the game just to make it a little entertainment for the people around," he added.

Also read | IPL 2024: 'Should be changed or...,' Delhi Capitals players hit out at Impact Player rule

Delhi Capitals (DC) player Axar Patel, who plays the role of bowling all-rounder, echoed the sentiment shared by Rohit.

"Because of the Impact sub rule, everyone gets one more batsman so they think that they will use the batsman in case the batting unit doesn't go well. And whosoever comes to play, they don't take much time and start (hitting) from the first ball because they know that they have a player in seventh or eighth place," Axar told PTI news agency.

"That is why I am not a big fan of the rule, because as an allrounder I know that they will either take a proper batsman or a bowler, not an allrounder," he added.

While teams failed to come to terms with the rule last year, they have become smarter and ruthless with the subs this year. It is perhaps one of the reasons why routine 200+ scores have been posted and chased this season.
