Elon Musk-led Tesla closed down its flagship showroom in China last week in an effort by the electric vehicle giant to adjust sales and service strategy amid ongoing Covid-related restrictions in the country. The showroom, Tesla’s first in China, was opened in 2013 and had been operational in Beijing’s Parkview Green, an upscale downtown shopping centre of Chinese capital.

“Their contract with us expired and Tesla decided not to extend it,” a member of the staff at Beijing's Parkview Green was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Across China, authorities are aiming to drive down the number of Covid-19 cases by imposing strict lockdowns, closing borders and imposing travel bans, a strategy codified by Beijing as 'zero Covid policy'. The policy, although deemed largely successful in keeping Covid spread under check in China, has hurt businesses due to movement-related restrictions.

Tesla had renovated the now-closed showroom in 2018 by expanding it further to occupy two floors of Parkview Green mall. However, despite significant investments in renovation, the Texas-headquartered company decided not to extend its contract with Beijing’s Parkview Green that housed its showroom.

Earlier, reports had emerged stating that Tesla was considering the closure of some major showrooms in China due to descending footfall of people amid Covid-related restrictions in the country.

Opium crop cultivation in Afghanistan grew by 32 per cent in 2022 amid multiple humanitarian and economic crises faced by the Taliban-ruled nation since the extremist group stormed into power in Kabul last August, said the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in a report published Tuesday.

The UNODC report added that the income made by Afghan farmers from opium sales more than tripled, from $425 million in 2021 to $1.4 billion in 2022. However, this does not translate into purchasing power for farmers since food prices in Afghanistan reportedly rose by 35 per cent since Taliban’s takeover of the seat of power in Kabul.

The Taliban, however, had banned all cultivation of opium poppy and related narcotics plantations in April 2022. This year’s cultivation was exempted from the decree, the UNODC statement said. The 2022 harvest can be converted into 350-380 tons of heroin of export quality, UNDP said, at 50-70 per cent purity, the UNDP said.

WATCH : Crippling dry spell grips war-torn Afghanistan × Opium is the essential ingredient for manufacturing Heroin, a street drug whose illicit abuse causes widespread addiction issues and dire health crises across the world. Opiate Trafficking unabated since Taliban’s takeover According to UNODC’s Drugs Monitoring Platform, the seizure events of opioids in Afghanistan suggest that the opiate trafficking from Afghanistan has been ongoing without interruption since August 2022. “Afghan farmers are trapped in the illicit opiate economy, while seizure events around Afghanistan suggest that opiate trafficking continues unabated,” said UNODC Executive Director Ghada Waly. Nearly 80 per cent of all opiate users in the world source it out of Afghanistan. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. The Kremlin on Tuesday reiterated its accusations against the United Kingdom of being involved in the 'sabotage' of the Nord Stream gas pipeline. "Our intelligence services have data indicating that British military specialists were directing and coordinating the attack." Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying by the news agency AFP.

"There is evidence that Britain is involved in sabotage, in a terrorist attack on vital energy infrastructure, not just Russian, but international," he added. But Britain's defence ministry is yet to comment on the matter.

Earlier on November 29, the Russian defence ministry had accused British navy personnel blew up the Nord Stream gas pipelines in September. Russia again accuses UK of 'directing and coordinating' Nord Stream blasts

Even as Alabama Department of Corrections prepared to execute a death-row inmate Thursday night, a journalist was stopped from witnessing it. Reason? Apparently her skirt was too short and violated the “prison dress code.”

Ivana Hrynkiw, a reporter and managing producer with AL.com, who has attended seven executions in her career, was told by a prison official that her dress did not meet the dress regulations.

“I have worn this skirt to prior executions without incident, to work, professional events and more and I believe it is more than appropriate. At 5′10″ with my heels on, I am a tall and long-legged person,” she said on Twitter.

However, she tried to salvage the situation by pulling the skirt down to the hips to increase its length. But the prison official wasn’t up for it. Hrynkiw then borrowed a pair of fisherman’s waders from a local television photographer, The Guardian reported.

Alabama: Journalist stopped from attending execution because her skirt was ‘too short’

A New Zealand man who helped build a US-based pornography firm by dragooning young women into filming adult videos has pleaded guilty in San Diego federal court to one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking.

A New Zealand man who helped build a US-based pornography firm by dragooning young women into filming adult videos has pleaded guilty in San Diego federal court to one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking. Matthew Isaac Wolfe, 40, admitted to his involvement in the ploy that recruited women to perform in videos for GirlsDoPorn, on the promise that the content would not be streamed in the United States and would not be uploaded online. Wolfe is the fourth defendant to plead guilty in connection to the case. The website that generates more than US$17m in revenue was launched in 2006 by New Zealander Michael Pratt. The operations were managed by Ruben Garcia and Wolfe, who moved to the U.S. in 2011 to help Pratt. As per the California court, Wolfe filmed about 100 videos, uploaded them on to the internet, oversaw the companies’ finances and promoted the business. He also trained co-defendant Theodore Gyi, a cameraman, on how to run video shoots, including Gyi to tell the women the videos would not be uploaded online. Wolfe admitted that to persuade the women to appear in the videos, he'd misled them by convincing them that the videos would neither be featured online nor released in the United States. The Department of Justice said Wolfe knew these representations were false because the videos were exclusively marketed and distributed on the internet. They were promised that the footage would go straight to DVD for wealthy buyers in other countries, in particular Australia and New Zealand, where the defendants come from. The women, who applied to a modelling call-out on Craigslist, were contacted by other women who acted as “references” pitching the idea of making adult films that would never go online. The women reported feeling pressured to take part and those who tried to back out were threatened. To persuade women to appear in the films, Wolfe told the victims that no one who knew the women would ever find out about the videos, which he knew was false, the court said, because the videos were exclusively marketed and posted on the internet and have been viewed more than a billion times. The court said that Wolfe was aware of the fact that personal identifying information and social media accounts were being posted on pornwikileaks.com, a site controlled by Pratt, subjecting the victims to severe harassment. “This crime had a devastating impact on the victims,” said US attorney Randy Grossman. “We will seek justice for human trafficking victims in hopes that it will help them reclaim their lives and leave the pain of this experience in the past. Wolfe has been sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in the crime. Meanwhile, the FBI is offering a reward of up to US$50,000 for information leading to the location and arrest of Pratt, 39, who continues to evade authorities. In 2020, a US judge awarded US$12.7m in damages to the 22 women who were defrauded.

Algeria celebrates 60 years of its independence grom France on Tuesday (July 5) with a large military parade, but the tension between the two countries remains due to colonial era brutality. The gruelling eight-year war that brought freedom to the country was put to an end with the signing of the Evian Accords in March 1962. Authorities in Algiers on Friday closed a 16-kilometre (10 mile) stretch of a major artery so that the army could conduct final preparations for its parade, the first one in 33 years. Roads leading to the capital’s eastern suburbs have experienced severe backups as a result of the shutdown, AFP reported.

This procession will be presided over by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who will be accompanied by a number of international dignitaries, including Mahmud Abbas of Palestine, Kais Saeid of Tunisia, and Mohamed Bazoum of Niger.

Algeria celebrates 60 years of Independence from France, colonial era wounds remain

Macau reported 89 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, taking the total to more than 900 infections since mid-June, as authorities in the world's biggest gambling hub race to contain its largest outbreak since the pandemic began.

More than 13,000 people are under quarantine in the Chinese special administrative region, which has effectively shut down to limit the spread of coronavirus.

The city's more than 600,000 residents are subject to three citywide COVID-19 tests this week, with people also required to take rapid antigen tests in between.

While the former Portuguese colony has not introduced a full scale lockdown seen in mainland Chinese cities like Shanghai, most facilities are shut and restaurants can only provide takeaway.

Only Macau's casinos have been allowed to stay open in a move to ensure job security. The government relies on the industry for over 80 per cent of its tax revenue with most of the population employed directly or indirectly by the casino resorts.

While casinos are physically open, there are hardly any gamblers inside and very few staff working, with many employees asked to stay at home, as per the government's request.

The government relies on the industry for over 80 per cent of its tax revenue with most of the population employed directly or indirectly by the casino resorts. While casinos are physically open, there are hardly any gamblers inside and very few staff working, with many employees asked to stay at home, as per the government's request.
