Official election results for Kenya’s presidential elections showed that veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga has won. As per the Election Commission, with just over 26 per cent of votes, Odinga had 54 per cent and his opponent, William Ruto, had 45 per cent, pushing him to second position.

Both candidates are in close competition to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta, who has served his two-term tenure.&nbsp;

The election commission chairman, Wafula Chebukati, has been criticising the party agents for getting involved in the results before they include the final totals. He said, "Agents in this exercise cannot proceed ... as if we are doing a forensic audit," he told a news briefing on Friday. Chebukati further added, "We are not moving as fast as we should. This exercise needs to be concluded as soon as possible," Reuetrs reported.

Reuters and many other media outlets have been tallying results forms from 291 constituencies from the commission’s website. As per Reuters tally, who counted till 241 forms, showed that Ruto had nearly 52.3 per cent of the vote in comparison to Odinga who had 47 per cent. The remaining 30 forms weren’t included because of the missing authentic details such as signatures, totals and constituency names. The two candidates had less than 1 per cent between them.

According to Kenyan election rules, the forms must be physically transported to the national tallying centre so that the representatives can check them for any irregularities. This procedure is regarded safe and to avoid any sort of violence that occurred earlier in 2017 and 2007 elections.

Currently, the public still awaits official vote tabulation.

After months of Covid lockdown, Shanghai on Sunday (August 14), announced that all schools, including kindergartens, and primary and middle schools, will reopen from September 1. The city will mandate that all teachers and students undergo daily Covid nucleic acid tests before leaving the campus.

The Shanghai Municipal Education Commission stated that the city will also mandate 14-day self-health management inside the city prior to the schools' reopening. Shanghai had closed all schools in mid-March.

According to Logan Koepe, a researcher who examines how technology affects criminal justice, the statement seems to indicate that the outcome would have been different if the search warrants mentioned abortion. As per tech observers, the Nebraska case won't be the only case.

The UN Health agency said there were more than 14,000 COVID-19 deaths in the last week and nearly 7 million new infections. The Western Pacific reported a 30 per cent&nbsp;jump in cases while Africa reported a 46 per cent drop. Cases also fell by more than 20 per cent&nbsp;in the Americas and the Middle East.

The number of new deaths rose by 19 per cent&nbsp;in the Middle East, while dropping by more than 70 per cent&nbsp;in Africa, 15 per cent&nbsp;in Europe and 10 per cent&nbsp;in the Americas.

About 80,000 tourists were stranded this week in Sanya after Chinese officials declared it a COVID-19 hot spot and required people to test negative five times within a week before being allowed to leave.

On Tuesday, the Chinese government sent a first planeload of 125 tourists out of Sanya and said other flights would be organized to fly out tourists in batches once they fulfilled the criteria to leave.

A satellite analysis on Wednesday (August 11) revealed that the world’s largest ice sheet has lost twice as much ice over the past 25 years as previously thought because Antarctica’s coastal glaciers are losing icebergs faster than the environment can restore the melting ice.

It takes thousands of years for ice shelves to form. Once formed, they act as buttresses to hold back glaciers from slipping into oceans, or else they can raise sea levels. Their size is constant as a cycle of calving and regrowth keeps them. However, in recent decades, warmer oceans have damaged the shelves from below.
