India's Navy Chief Admiral Radhakrishnan Hari Kumar said on Saturday (December 3) that there are a "lot of Chinese ships" operating in the Indian Ocean region and the Indian Navy is keeping a close on all the activities, including the movement of Chinese vessels.

During an annual presser, the Navy chief said: "There are a lot of Chinese ships which operate in the Indian Ocean Region. We have about 4-6 PLA Navy ships, then some research vessels which operate. A large number of Chinese fishing vessels operate in the Indian Ocean Region. We keep a close watch on all developments."

The Indian navy chief also mentioned that nearly 60-odd other extra-regional forces are always present in Indian Ocean Region (IOR). "We are aware it`s a vital region where there is a large amount of trade which transits, energy flows which happen. Our job is to see that India`s interests in the maritime domain are protected," he added.

He further said that the Indian Navy is ready to "protect, preserve and promote" the national interest in the maritime domain. "To achieve this, we have the vision of being a combat-ready, credible, cohesive and future-proof force," he said.

Russia-Ukraine war: Moscow says Vladimir Putin will visit east Ukraine 'in due time'

Moscow on Saturday (December 3) responded to the "dangerous" price cap on Russian crude oil which has been imposed by the Group of Seven (G7) countries, the European Union and Australia. The West has come up with a $60 oil price cap, which will come into effect on Monday or soon after. This cap is in addition to an EU embargo on maritime deliveries of Russian crude oil.

The latest move by the West is aimed at restricting Moscow's revenues so that its capability to finance the ongoing war in Ukraine is reduced.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told domestic news agencies: "We will not accept this price cap." Peskov also said that Russia was "analysing" the move.

EU embargo on maritime deliveries is meant to prevent the seaborne shipments of Russian crude to the European Union, which is apparently responsible for two-thirds of the bloc's oil imports and such restrictions will cost Russia billions of euros.

The G7 said it was acting on its promise "to prevent Russia from profiting from its war of aggression against Ukraine, to support stability in global energy markets and to minimise negative economic spillovers of Russia's war of aggression".

The decision was welcomed by nations, including the US and Ukraine. The White House called it "welcome news" that would help limit Putin's ability to fund the Kremlin's "war machine".

Kyiv also welcomed the move. Ukraine's presidential chief of staff Andriy Yermak said on Saturday: "We always achieve our goal and the economy of Russia will be destroyed, and Russia itself will pay and be responsible for all crimes."

Meanwhile, Russia has reaffirmed its stance of not supplying oil to nations that implement the cap. Mikhail Ulyanov, who is Russia's ambassador to international organisations in Vienna, said in a social media post: "Starting from this year Europe will live without Russian oil."

Russia's embassy in the US criticised the move, stating that it was "reshaping" free market principles. In a post on Telegram, it also said that its oil would continue to be in demand despite the measures.

It said: "Steps like these will inevitably result in increasing uncertainty and imposing higher costs for raw materials' consumers. Regardless of the current flirtations with the dangerous and illegitimate instrument, we are confident that Russian oil will continue to be in demand."

In a blog post published on Friday (December 2), Google underlined reasons to switch to RCS (or Rich Communication Services). The tech firm also mocked Apple for still not offering an RCS messaging standard. In the blog post titled "Happy birthday and farewell, SMS! It's time for RCS", Google targeted Apple on the 30th anniversary of the short message service. The first SMS message was sent on December 3, 1992. For the unversed, RCS is a communication protocol between mobile-telephone carriers and between phone and carrier. The service aims to replace SMS messages with a more robust text-messaging system that supports in-call multimedia transmission and phonebook polling (for service discovery). It is part of the broader IP Multimedia Subsystem. The company also calls out Apple for not implementing it. The blog post added that most of the mobile world is using RCS, but "there is one company that's dragging its heels". It added: "But after 30 years of SMS texting, it's truly time." × ALSO READ | Apple tweaks AirDrop feature on iPhones in China after "bridge man" protests against Xi Jinping The post authored by Neena Budhiraja, the Group Product Manager at Messages by Google, mentioned: "All of the major mobile carriers and manufacturers have adopted RCS as the standard — except for Apple." Budhiraja noted that Apple refuses to adopt RCS and continues to rely on SMS when people with iPhones message people with Android phones, which means their texting is "stuck in the 1990s". The post further read that hopefully, Apple "can #GetTheMessage so we don't have to keep waiting to remove the whole 'green-versus-blue bubble' thing." Google also highlighted three big reasons why the whole industry should get behind RCS, which are: Security is front and centre. It upgrades the conversation. It’s the industry’s modern standard. China has hinted at possible relaxing of some of the coronavirus (COVID-19) measures amid growing public frustration and mass protests as the authorities in many parts of the country dealt with the rare task of tackling the demonstrators.

Despite a rise in daily Covid cases, China is now calling the deadly Covid virus no more serious than a "seasonal cold". The health authorities have also urged the public to not panic.

Tang is also the head of the national key clinical department of infectious diseases.

As China loosens some Covid curbs, Guangzhou official says virus now ‘less virulent than flu’

A video has been released by Taronga zoo which shows five lions scratching and breaking the fence around them and finally escaping the enclosure.

In the video, the five lions, which include an adult male and four cubs, are clawing at the fence and then squeezing underneath it to escape the enclosure and wander outside their zoo.

The escape of lions, which took place in early November, led to the zoo's lockdown with the issue of a “code one” alert. The visitors and staff sought shelter till the lions were locked back in their enclosure.

The video shows the lions remaining close to the fence after escaping the enclosure, as lioness Maya remains inside it.

As per a statement released by Targona zoo, all five lions managed to escape but remained calm before returning to the enclosure on their own.

“The five lions calmly investigated within metres of their main exhibit, before actively trying to find their way back under the fence as lioness Maya and keepers began calling for them,” the Targona zoo said in a statement.

“The cubs and father Ato made several attempts to re-enter the exhibit and male cub Luzuko was the first to successfully do so. He was followed shortly after by female cub Zuri and male cub Khari. With encouragement from keepers, Ato returned to the exhibit before making his way into the dens to be reunited with his pride,” the zoo added.

US President Joe Biden on Friday appealed to the country's political leaders to denounce anti-Semitism, in the wake of Donald Trump hosting a Holocaust denier and rapper Kanye West declaring his admiration for Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.

US President Joe Biden on Friday appealed to the country's political leaders to denounce anti-Semitism, in the wake of Donald Trump hosting a Holocaust denier and rapper Kanye West declaring his admiration for Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. The warning was issued by Biden at a time when concerns are being raised over anti-Semitic discourse's normalisation in the United States. "I just want to make a few things clear: The Holocaust happened. Hitler was a demonic figure. And instead of giving it a platform, our political leaders should be calling out and rejecting antisemitism wherever it hides,” tweeted Biden. "Silence is complicity," he added. Biden made the statement a day after West, who is now known by the name Ye, was thrown out of Twitter after he tried to incite violence with his post which displayed a Nazi swastika interlaced with a Star of David. ALSO READ | Twitter suppressed Hunter Biden laptop story in 2020, internal emails reveal This Twitter ban was immediately followed by another unhinged interview taken by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, in which West was seen covering his complete face with a black mask and professing his "love" for the Nazis and strongly stating "I like Hitler." Previously, Donal Trump faced backlash from the White House for hosting the Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes and West at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida last week. In his defence, Trump said that West brought along several of his friends uninvited, among which one was Fuentes, who is an outspoken anti-Semite and a white supremacist and whose YouTube channel was suspended permanently over hate speech in 2020. West has not been the only celebrity to have caused an uproar with an anti-Semitic statement of late, another such celebrity is NBA star Kyrie Irving who recently faced suspension and apologised for linking to a movie, which was labelled as anti-Semitic. White supremacist ideology Elon Musk's decision to cut back moderation after he bought Twitter has led to an exacerbation of unease about the spread of hate speech. The Anti-Defamation League published data on Friday which said that there has been a surge of more than 60% in anti-Semitic tweets which are related to Judaism and Jews in the past two weeks after Musk's takeover of Twitter. The rhetoric matches the steady increase in the occurrence of hateful incidents targeted towards Jews. It was discovered by the Anti-Defamation League that reports related to vandalism, harassment and violence against Jews increased drastically, reaching an all-time high, in the United States in 2021. In 2019, the country had to deal with a shocking incident of deadly shootings which targeted synagogues in Pittsburgh and California. ALSO READ | Trump knew about tax fraud in his company, says prosecution in closing arguments In both scenarios, the attackers belonged to the far-right that supports hate against African Americans, Jews, Muslims and immigrants and advocates for a Christian, Caucasian society which is based on European culture. After the twin attacks, concerns were reinforced about anti-Semitic hatred becoming a rallying point for resurged white supremacists, who had received encouragement after Trump had failed to condemn their ideology unequivocally. The former president's critics, which include Republican rebels like Liz Cheney, have slammed the party for enabling anti-Semitism and white supremacy under Trump's sway. Biden, who has himself claimed that he decided to run for president after hearing Trump's refusal to denounce a neo-Nazi rally organised in Charlottesville in 2017, has spoken repeatedly against the ideology which he believes "tears at the soul" of the nation. The Australian law, which was passed last year for big tech companies to pay for news content shared on their platforms, has been a success and the authorities should consider extending it further to social media forums such as TikTok and Twitter, a recent government report found.

The world watched the implementation of the law and its impact very closely. The law basically gives power to the government to make internet giants Facebook and Google negotiate content supply deals with media outlets.

The landmark law—News Media Bargaining Code—became a controversy when Facebook removed all news from its Australian platform. But the government report suggests that the law must be extended to other media platforms.
