COVID-19: India records 5,880 new cases. Nationwide mock drill in hospitals to check preparedness

Russian President Vladimir Putin may attend the G-20 summit in India in July, according to his spokesperson on Monday. When asked if Putin would attend the summit in India in September, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded, "It cannot be ruled out."

Russia annexed the Crimea peninsula from Ukraine in 2014, but it always remained a matter of contention between Moscow and the West. The region and its fate were discussed multiple times during the course of Ukraine's invasion by Russia as experts and analysts see uncanny similarities between the two series of incidents.

Recently, news outlet Al Jazeera did an analysis of satellite images of Crimea which revealed that the Russian forces are fortifying the Crimean peninsula. It suggests that Russia is preparing for a possible Ukrainian attack aimed at recapturing it. The news report mentioned that such military movements indicate that any attempt will be difficult and deadly.

The report also mentioned that an investigation by its Sanad news verification and monitoring unit discovered that a fortified barrier was seen at the Crimean border and the surrounding areas between February and March.

The Al Jazeera report also noted that the images provided to Sanad by SkySat and Planet.com further revealed that the construction and expansion of several significant military bases took place during the same period.

Images that were taken on April 1 also show that authorities in Crimea have set up a sea barrier at a dock of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the Sevastopol port, in addition to several new buildings and infrastructure developments within the port area.

While talking about ads for workers needed for the construction of fortifications, analysts weighed in on the shortage of manpower. According to the experts, such a shortage of workforce amid the ongoing war can be a reason behind partially ineffective trenches.

As quoted by the report, who is a senior intelligence analyst at security company Global Guardian, analysed the photographs and told Al Jazeera: "None of the trenches in any of the photos is 100 per cent complete. All indicate ongoing work, as the trench networks are not connected and lack complete communications trenches."

Faintuch also said that the images showing trenches in northern Crimea indicate that Russia is maybe working on deterring Ukraine from mounting a ground assault from the north.

As quoted by the report, Faintuch further noted: "The new Russian defensive lines leverage the topography and existing villages to create choke points along these highways. In essence, if the Russians find themselves on the defensive in Crimea, they plan on giving Ukraine a taste of its own medicine."

What did Lula say about Crimea?

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva hopes to act as a mediator to end the Ukraine war and also issued a vague proposal. He has proposed creating a group of countries to mediate in the war in Ukraine and the Brazilian leader said he was "confident" that this group "would be created" after his China trip.

Lula had even suggested that Kyiv should give up Crimea to end the war with Russia. But in response, Ukrainian foreign ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said that "there is no legal, political or moral reason that would justify us having to yield even a centimetre of Ukrainian land".

Nikolenko also said that "any mediation efforts to restore peace in Ukraine should be based on respect for the sovereignty and the full restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity".

Lula suggested Ukraine could give up Crimea to begin peace discussions and noted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky "could not get everything".

A couple of days ago, Zelensky said in a tweet that "the world should know: respect and order will return to international relations only when the Ukrainian flag returns to Crimea, when there is freedom there – just like everywhere else in Ukraine".

Explained: Are tensions simmering in Crimea, again? Satellite images foretell deadly fight

Rock-steady Jon Rahm, channeling Spanish great Seve Ballesteros on his late hero's birthday, survived a marathon day and scored an emotional Masters win at Augusta National on Sunday, denying LIV Golf a watershed victory.

Rahm, who started the day four off the lead, rallied behind a final round three-under 69 for a winning total of 12-under 276 and a decisive four-shot victory over LIV standard bearers Brooks Koepka and evergreen Phil Mickelson.

The win was Rahm's fourth this season, earning him a second career major to go along with his 2021 U.S. Open title.

He also reclaims the number one world ranking from defending champion Scottie Scheffler.

"Never thought I was going to cry by winning a golf tournament, but I got very close on that 18th hole," said Rahm, who becomes the fourth Spaniard to win the Masters after Ballesteros, Jose Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia.

"A lot of pride, I am really proud of myself and what I did."

Koepka, who sat atop the leaderboard for three rounds, simply could not get in gear at the end, labouring to a three-over 75.

Winner of three Green Jackets, 52-year-old Mickelson turned back the clock and carded the round of the day with a sensational seven-under 65 - the lowest Masters round ever for a player over 50 - to join Koepka on eight-under 280.

Two former-Masters champions in Jordan Spieth (66) and Patrick Reed (68), along with Russell Henley (70), finished one shot further adrift in a tie for fourth.

Coming on what would have been Ballesteros's 66th birthday and the 40th anniversary of the Spanish talisman's second of two Green Jacket wins, Rahm soaked up a rousing ovation as he walked up the 18th fairway with a four-stroke cushion.

Fighting to keep his composure, the 28-year-old sealed victory with a 4-foot par putt, capping a marathon day of golf that started at sunrise and finished in the Georgia twilight.

"History of the game is a big part of why I play and one of the reasons why I play, and Seve being one of them," said Rahm. "For me to get it done on the 40th anniversary of his win, his birthday, on Easter Sunday, it's incredibly meaningful.

"To finish it off the way I did - a Seve par, it was in a testament to him, and I know he was pulling for me today.

"This one was for Seve. He was up there helping, and help he did."

RAHM IN CHARGE

After two days of play interrupted by lashing rain and ferocious winds that toppled trees, the field of 53 returned to the water-logged course on Sunday to complete the third round.

"A lot of pride, I am really proud of myself and what I did." Koepka, who sat atop the leaderboard for three rounds, simply could not get in gear at the end, labouring to a three-over 75. He was up there helping, and help he did." RAHM IN CHARGE After two days of play interrupted by lashing rain and ferocious winds that toppled trees, the field of 53 returned to the water-logged course on Sunday to complete the third round. Koepka, who led Rahm by four shots overnight, was ahead by two at the end of the round. LIV Tour tournaments are contested over 54 holes and if the action in Augusta had ended after the conclusion of the third round, Koepka would have been slipping into a Green Jacket. Unfortunately for Koepka, the majors require 72 holes to find a winner. By the time the two men reached the turn of the fourth round, the Spaniard now in front by two had taken charge. Jon Rahm claims Masters title for second major victory

The bankruptcy filing of Richard Branson's Virgin Orbit has dealt a significant blow to Japan's plans of building a domestic space industry, including the Kyushu-based spaceport designed to attract tourism.

Oita prefecture had partnered with Virgin Orbit in 2020 to create its first Asian spaceport at Oita Airport using a Boeing 747 for horizontal rocket launches. However, the original plan to launch small satellites from Oita as early as last year never occurred, leading to another setback in Japan's attempt to become a player in the crowded market for commercial satellite launches after two recent rocket launch failures.

Two Japanese companies, ANA Holdings unit All Nippon Airways Trading Co and little-known Japanese satellite development start-up iQPS Inc, emerged among the top six creditors when Virgin Orbit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. ANA, owed $1.65 million, had entered into a provisional deal with Virgin Orbit in 2021 for 20 flights of its LauncherOne rocket at the Oita spaceport. Fukuoka-based iQPS had paid a $5.2 million deposit to launch its small, lightweight constellation satellites weighing around 100 kilograms.

Oita prefecture had estimated that the spaceport would produce economic benefits worth about $97 million dollars in the region over the five years from the initial launch, attracting around 240,000 tourists. Local businesses created alien-related souvenirs, from alien passports to "E.T." bicycles, in anticipation of the spaceport's opening. Locals are still hopeful that a spaceport will eventually emerge, and an economics lecturer at Oita University noted that there are other companies and competitors besides Virgin Orbit that are considering horizontal launches, so Oita still has many options to re-enter into a contract with them.

While Japan has big ambitions for space, recent setbacks such as the failed medium-lift H3 rocket in March and the solid-fuel Epsilon rocket in October have some experts urging Japan to shift the focus of its space industry. Cyber and space expert Jun Nagashima suggested that Japan is concentrating too much on launches and that it would be better for Japan to compete in different activities and areas in space, especially with SpaceX coming out with affordable rockets that can be used repeatedly.

Despite the challenges, Japan's hopes of building a domestic space industry and attracting tourists to its spaceports remain intact, and the country will likely continue to pursue new opportunities and partnerships in the rapidly evolving space sector.

Some documents labelled as "Secret" and "Top Secret" were seen during the initial batch and they were found on social media platforms such as Twitter, Telegram, Discord, and more. They were dated March 1. The authenticity of the documents was not done but a leak of such leaks of classified and military documents is quite unusual. Also, defence analysts said that such leaks would be both damaging and potentially embarrassing. Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh said: "We are aware of the reports of social media posts and the Department (of Defense) is reviewing the matter." Meanwhile, a CIA spokesperson said the agency was also aware of the posts and was looking into the claims. What did the documents reveal? The leaked documents outlined Ukraine’s military strength, the state of the conflict, casualty figures and the burn rate for the HIMARS long-range rocket systems, which were provided by the US to Ukraine for the ongoing war. The documents also included maps and lists of equipment. The leaked documents also appeared to have details of what the US has learned via signals intelligence regarding Russian plans and operations. John Sullivan, former US ambassador to Russia and deputy secretary of state, told NBC News on Friday that the documents appeared to have been altered with caution. As quoted, Sullivan said: "There are some indications that ... there are some aspects of the document that have some authenticity to them, but there are also indications that this may be a Russian disinformation campaign, which they’re very good at."
Governors in nine prefectures, mayors in six major cities, and assembly members in 41 prefectures and 17 large cities will get elected by voters through the poll.

The reports also mentioned that candidates were running uncontested in about 40 per cent of nearly 1,000 districts. About 25 per cent in total, 565 candidates, were running against no opponent in prefectural assemblies in the vote.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications also revealed that in 348 electoral districts, about 40% of the total candidates will be running.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida had warned the trend threatens "whether we can continue to function as a society", and a fresh focus on the issue has sparked countless articles.

Japan population crisis: Nation faces shortage of candidates for local elections

Experts and conservationists have been advocating for the removal of shark nets permanently from all east coast beaches in Australia. It has been understood that shark nets are more or less ineffective and harmful to other endangered species.

The shark nets, supposed to act as a physical barrier, are aimed at preventing sharks from reaching the shallow swimming areas of the surf beaches.

But over a period of time, such shark meshes have been apparently leading to the killing of other marine animals like whales, turtles, dolphins, dugongs, etc. There has been an evident environmental impact also.

A report by Sky News revealed that Queensland has 26 shark nets in place all year round, and New South Wales has 51 nets, which get removed during the whale migration season.

Sky News mentioned in the report that it travelled off Sydney's coast to gather information about the shark nets at Manly in northern Sydney and found that the meshes were only 150 metres long, while the beach is half a mile. The same was at Bondi beach also, the nets don't cover the entire length of it, only a small part.

This has been a major concern as several reports have mentioned that the shark mesh nets are not a complete barrier to sharks, which might reach beaches as they are not permanently set in the water, and do not cover the whole length of the beach.

The meshing schemes and their maintenance are managed by the state governments. But according to reports, the N.S.W. Fisheries Scientific Committee has listed shark meshing as a Key Threatening Process.
