The satellite is named after Prof. Satish Dhawan, a former ISRO chairman and among the pioneers of space technology in India.&nbsp;

This miniature spacecraft would also test the capabilities of LoRa (Long range) technology in space which could be helpful for many applications in the future in short and M2M (machine-to-machine) communication. LoRa is a long-range, low-power wireless radio frequency technology that has become a common platform for the Internet of Things (IoT) networks worldwide.&nbsp;

According to Dr. Srimathy Kesan, Founder and CEO of SpaceKidz India, this satellite is their most ambitious yet and the first one that would have propulsion of its own. It is important to note that SpaceKidz earlier satellites were maintained in orbit on board PS4 (final and fourth stage) of the PSLV rocket for up to 6 months after launch. But SD Sat would fly on its own like the larger satellites and is expected to have a mission life of two years.&nbsp;

While their satellite would be primarily using Frequency-shift keying (FSK) to transmit data back to earth, LoRa would be the secondary. Experimenting with LoRa would help them study the feasibility of using LoRa in ground communications for industrial purposes.&nbsp;

“SD Sat (30x10x10cm)is a significant step for our 10-member team of college students, because so far we’ve only done 10cm cubes. The satellite fabrication is underway and it will be handed over to ISRO within three weeks from now. The important aspect of this mission is to establish communication with the satellite from our ground station in Chennai” she told Zee Media.

When asked about the idea of sending names of common people to space, she said it was an initiative to create awareness, generate curiosity and to get more people fascinated about space science, which many still perceive as inaccessible.&nbsp;

“We’ve shared a link on our website where people can enter their names (by Jan 3rd), we’ll compile the list and put the names on a memory card that’ll be on-board the satellite. Everyone who registered their name will get a boarding pass”, she added.&nbsp;

As a goodwill gesture, SpaceKidz team had also shared a similar boarding pass with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi when they had virtually interacted with him the previous week.&nbsp;

Amid harsh weather conditions owing to Cyclone Burevi in the southern tip of the Indian peninsula, an Indian Coast Guard Hovercraft rescued three fishermen who were stranded on an island for over 2 days.&nbsp;

The over two-hour rescue operation was undertaken after the District Collector, Ramanathapuram had conveyed about a distress call on three fishermen stranded at Manalli Tivu island at 10 am. The trio had ventured out to sea on Tuesday and stranded at an island as they were not able to start the boat’s engine.&nbsp;

Despite the challenges posed by gusty winds, continuous rains, and low visibility, the Hovercraft from Coast Guard’s Mandapam station persisted with the search in and around the island, located the boat, and rescued the crew.&nbsp;

The rescued persons were provided warm clothes, first aid, adequate&nbsp;&nbsp;fluids and refreshment, following which they were brought to Indian Coast Guard Station Mandapam and were subsequently handed over to fisheries department at noon today.&nbsp;

In view of the rough weather and sea conditions, the Indian Coast Guard has been relaying weather messages warning ships and fishermen. 35 of their disaster relief teams are ready in the East and West Coast, besides surface assets in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Karnataka that are on standby for search &amp; rescue, relief efforts.

However, the decision to manoeuvre is not very easy. Especially, when the satellite is performing a strategic role that requires it to be at a particular spot. Because the manoeuvre would affect the schedule of the pre-planned operation of surveillance (in whatever form). In this case, Roscosmos has said that both are remote sensing satellites, which implies that they in all likelihood used for strategic purposes.&nbsp;

The space community has been divided over the prediction models for tracking satellites in orbit. The existing ones are the European Model, American model, Russian model, whereas the Indian model is under development. The reason that the space community hotly debates the efficiency of the models is that there are differences between the calculations made using each model.&nbsp;

Following the cyclone warning issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), twelve teams of the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed across the North and Central Coastal districts of Tamil Nadu.&nbsp;Six teams are stationed in Cuddalore, two in Puducherry, one in Karaikal, besides two teams on standby in Chennai and one in Madurai, as the region braces for heavy rains.

On Monday, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami held a meeting&nbsp;at the secretariat regarding the cyclone preparedness. The State Government said that requisite alerts have been issued to district officials and that the inspection of water bodies was being carried out, besides ensuring measures to evacuate people in low-lying areas and accommodate them in relief camps, in accordance with Covid-19 protocols.&nbsp;According to the Government, multi-disciplinary teams have been formed at the local levels to coordinate efforts and mitigation measures.

Six teams are stationed in Cuddalore, two in Puducherry, one in Karaikal, besides two teams on standby in Chennai and one in Madurai, as the region braces for heavy rains. The weather formation is expected to develop into a cyclonic storm by Monday night and further into a severe cyclone by Tuesday, according to the Regional Meteorological Center, Chennai. The department added that the Cyclone was likely to make landfall between Karaikal and Mamallapuram, near Chennai on Wednesday, 25h November. Heavy rains have been predicted across the Northern, delta districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Wind speeds of 65kmph and rough waters with waves two meters higher than usual are forecast for the coastal areas over the next two days and fishermen have been advised not to venture out to the seas until Wednesday. Gusts of upto 120kmph are predicted at the time of the cyclone making landfall. The State Government said that requisite alerts have been issued to district officials and that the inspection of water bodies was being carried out, besides ensuring measures to evacuate people in low-lying areas and accommodate them in relief camps, in accordance with Covid-19 protocols. According to the Government, multi-disciplinary teams have been formed at the local levels to coordinate efforts and mitigation measures. TN Govt has announced that bus transport within and between seven districts will be suspended from 1pm on Tuesday, 24th November, until further notice, in view of the cyclone. The seven districts are Pudukkottai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Villupuram and Chengalpattu.
