Russia on Thursday recorded a largest a daily increase of confirmed coronavirus cases as the number of infections surged past 100,000.

According to health officials, 7,099 people confirmed of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number to 106,498 cases. The number of deaths in Russia is at 1,073.

With cases continue to rises with each passing day, Russia is on its way to becoming another worst-affected country in Europe. However, in comparison to other worst-hit European countries like Italy and Spain, the death toll in Russia is significantly low. &nbsp;

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the country's response had helped it avoid the catastrophic "Italian scenario".

Russia's success was down to "tough self-isolation decisions" and government measures "which convinced people to stay at home," local media quoted Peskov as saying.

The virus has spread to all 85 regions of the country, with Moscow the epicentre with around half the total cases.

Russia recently surpassed Iran and China in the number of confirmed infections and is now eighth in the world in virus cases, according to an AFP tally.

The country has carried out nearly 3.5 million virus tests, health officials said while adding that Russia is ranked 19th in the world for the number of coronavirus deaths.&nbsp;

Earlier this week, President Vladimir Putin warned that the situation remained "very difficult", saying Russia had managed to slow the spread of the epidemic but cautioning that "this should not reassure us".

Medics in Russia have complained of shortages of protective equipment and testing kits and hospital staff are becoming increasingly concerned with deaths in the medical community.

The Kremlin this week extended until May 11 a "non-working" period when Russians would stay at home but still receive their salaries as part of sweeping efforts to contain the virus.

Despite the steady increase in cases, Putin said that Russia may begin to gradually lift different quarantine regimes throughout the country from mid-May.&nbsp;

Russia sees record rise in one-day coronavirus infections; total number tops 100,000

The number of confirmed coronavirus infections spiked to 17,698 on Friday, according to local media reports. While 406 others lost their lives.

In the worst-hit region of Pakistan, Sindh province reported 6,675 cases. Punjab province followed the list with more than 6,300 infections.

In capital Islamabad, 343 people have confirmed of coronavirus. Meanwhile, 4,351 others have recovered.

While the country reels under poor healthcare system amid pandemic, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday stressed on the need of building its own medical infrastructure and underlined the need to reduce dependence on foreign aid.

Speaking at COMSTECH exhibition in Islamabad, Khan said, "The coronavirus has brought to the fore that Pakistan needs to build its medical infrastructure and reduce dependency on foreign aid".

"We have a dependency syndrome; we don't have that self-belief, we didn’t progress towards the knowledge economy because we didn't spend on education and research. Pakistanis excel once they immigrate; why can't you create that system here?" Khan also said.

"We have to focus on building our medical infrastructure so that we are prepared for any such emergency situation in the future," he added.

In the northwestern region of Russia, a construction site in Murmansk has emerged as coronavirus hotspot with over 1,000 workers testing&nbsp;positive for COVID-19.

According to the latest statement by the city governor, the authorities are sending some of its workers on a cruise ship in a bid to control the spread further.

Russian company Novatek is building a plant to supply its next LNG project in Murmansk, the Arctic LNG 2. It will supply gas platforms for the $20 billion.&nbsp;

The construction site has over 10,000 workers and out of those, 1,079 have tested positive for the deadly coronavirus.

Murmansk governor Andrei Chibis on Friday said&nbsp;a cruise ship called Princess Anastasia, which can carry 2,500 people, has been sent to Belokamenka to help control the spread of the infection.

"The liner is on its way to Murmansk... so that there are additional capacities for placing people," he said in a briefing streamed on the internet.

This comes a day after a construction company involved in the project, VelesStroi said that a 51-year-old woman who worked as a cleaner died on the premises.

After determining the woman to be positive of coronavirus, authorities failed to take her to the hospital. VelesStroi on its website said there was no need of hospitalization as she was showing "mild symptoms".&nbsp;

The press release has now been deleted.

Despite the big number of coronavirus positives, authorities are still continuing work at the construction site.

"We have not stopped the project... because the project is of principal importance for the economy of the region and the entire country," Chibis said.

Several sites associated with Russia's energy sector, where people from all over the country work long shifts and live close together, have emerged as infection hotspots in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Russia has reported a total of 114,431 coronavirus cases and 1,169 deaths up to Friday.&nbsp;

In 1886, workers used to work for 15 hours daily which triggered a massive protest in Chicago, On May 4,&nbsp;thousands of workers assembled&nbsp;for a peaceful rally in Chicago&nbsp;with a single demand, 8-hour work shift.

The protests were marred by violence as some protesters threw a dynamite bomb at the police. In the incident, seven police officers and four civilians died.

For years, the day has been marked with celebrations and protests. But, 2020 came to be an exception as workers this year are fighting a bigger battle.&nbsp;
