France and Belgium are currently in a diplomatic spat and it is over tons of dead fishes.

Regional governments in Belgium have accused France of not properly warning them of a leak at a sugar beet refinery, which led to the death of numerous fish in the Scheldt river.

The Belgian region of Wallonia has said that tonnes of fish were killed by pollution that flowed across the border from France.

Wallonia which is the French-speaking region of southern Belgium has adjoined border with France.

They have even accused the French authorities of being too slow to issue a warning.

However, the French company has said there was no proven link between the dead fish in Belgium and the leak at its facility.

French sugar maker Tereos said that a leak was found on April 9. It was then repaired on April 10 and that the situation was back to normal by April 13 on the French side of the Scheldt.

But Belgium maintains that France's slow response aggravated the problem.

Wallonia environment minister Celine Tellier even added that a polluter could be fined of up to 1 million euros in Wallonia.

The French environment ministry is yet to respond to this crisis.

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to grapple the world, economies are in a state of shock. The world economies are ravaging more severe than the global financial crisis or the great depression.

In a first, all major automakers, including Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra, failed to sell any car in Aprile due to the nationwide Covid-19 shutdown.

Meanwhile, Royal Dutch Shell, an oil and gas "supermajor" has cut its dividend for the first time since World War Two.

One of India's biggest conglomerate, Reliance suffered its worst profit fall in more than 11-years.

Going by the latest numbers coming in, it would not be wrong to say that the global economic impact from the pandemic is severe and it juts not India that is suffering, world economies are also facing the heat.

In the united states, 3.8 million people lost their jobs and filed for unemployment benefits last week.

According to the data, in six weeks, as many as 30 million Americans have sought unemployment benefits. This is one-fifth of America's working population and roughly nine per cent of its population.

In Europe as well, its economy is declining at the fastest rate on record.

The European Union is the world's largest economic bloc and since the outbreak, the eurozone economy has shrunk by 3.8 per cent.

France became the worst hit casualty as it saw the largest drop in GDP since 1949. Spain lost more than five per cent of its GDP in this quarter.

In Germany, retail sales have declined at their fastest rate since January 2007.

Meanwhile, economists have said that job losses are inevitable.

President of the European Central back, Christine Lagarde recently sais that the worst might be yet to come.

Some predictions by economy experts have painted further dire state of affairs for the rest of the year.

One way to make a guess about the future is to look at the global energy consumption.

The International Energy Agency or the IEA says it's not looking good.

They also said the global energy demand is set to plunge this year while forecasting a decline of six per cent in energy demand.

This is the biggest drop since world war two.

"In absolute terms, the decline is unprecedented - the equivalent of losing the entire energy demand of India, the world's third-largest energy consumer."

I guess it's safe to say the world economy now faces a long road to recovery.

Amid coronavirus pandemic, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday stressed on the need of building its own healthcare infrastructure and underlined the need of independence for the country.

Speaking at COMSTECH exhibition in Islamabad, Khan said, "The coronavirus has brought to the fore that Pakistan needs to build its medical infrastructure and reduce dependency on foreign aid".

"We have a dependency syndrome; we don't have that self-belief, we didn’t progress towards the knowledge economy because we didn't spend on education and research. Pakistanis excel once they immigrate; why can't you create that system here?" Khan also said.

"We have to focus on building our medical infrastructure so that we are prepared for any such emergency situation in the future," he added.

In first public remarks, US Presidential candidate Joe Biden on Friday denied any sexual assault allegations related to a former staffer in his US Senate office.

The incident she claimed occurred in 1993 "They aren't true. This never happened,", Biden said in an e-mailed statement.

Biden also said Reade's then-supervisor and former senior staffers in his office "have said, unequivocally, that she never came to them and complained or raised issues."

Biden's statement comes a month after constant grilling by media for his silence over the accusations. A lot of people including his democratic colleagues urged Biden to come out in public and directly respond to the accusations.

A California woman named Tara Reade, who worked as a staff assistant in Biden's US Senate office from December 1992 to August 1993, has accused Biden in media interviews of pinning her against a wall in 1993, reaching under her skirt and pushing his fingers inside her.

Reade, 56, told media interviewers she complained at the time about sexual harassment, though not sexual assault, to three of Biden's Senate aides. The Biden campaign released a statement from one, Marianne Baker, who said she never received any report of inappropriate behavior in nearly 20 years of working for Biden.

Biden is set to challenge Republican President Donald Trump, 73, in the November 3 US election. Trump has been accused by more than a dozen women of sexual assault and misconduct over the years, allegations he and his aides have denied.

In one of the harshest sentence in China, the government arrested a journalist on Thursday for "attacking" the ruling party. The journalist has been sentenced for 15-years.

The government arrested Chen Jien, a former journalist with Communist mouthpiece People's Daily, on the accusation of attacking the ruling party and "picking quarrels and provoking trouble, extortion, illegal business operations and bribery," a court in central Hunan province said in a statement posted online.

The court also accused Jien of posting "false" and "negative" information online "to hype relevant cases under the guise of providing legal advice."

It said Jien was part of an "evil force" along with his ex-wife and three other people that illegally accrued 7.3 million yuan ($1 million) from their activities.

Meanwhile, Human Rights Defenders watchdog has said Jien was convicted "apparently to punish him for his political speech on WeChat and other social media platforms", calling for his immediate and unconditional release.

The rights group also blamed government authorities of denying a fair trial to Jien.

Jien had been sacked from state media outlets including the China Youth Daily, Beijing Daily, and People's Daily and since then he was publishing online commentaries and investigative reports on social media.

The sentence handed down on Chen Jieren is one of the harshest moves yet against free speech by China's government under President Xi Jinping, who has muzzled the press and ordered Chinese media outlets to serve the ruling Communist Party's interests.

It comes as China faces international scrutiny over its handling of the coronavirus pandemic, including questions over whether authorities covered up crucial information that could have prevented it spreading globally.

The charge of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble" is a catch-all that Chinese authorities sometimes use against people who criticise the regime.

The number of sexual assaults in the US military increased in 2019 to 7,825 which was a three per cent increase from 2018, a report published by Pentagon said on Friday.

Last year as well, there was an increase of 13 per cent in the number of assaults and sexual crimes brought to the attention of military authorities.

The report was compiled by Department of Defense's Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office (SAPR) and was published on Pentagon's site.

As per the data, the Air Force saw a nine per cent spike in cases while Navy had a rise of five per cent. A sexual assault case in Army witnessed an increase of two per cent.

The data also showed that 73 per cent of these sexual assaults in the military were committed by a superior.

While the Marines have previously been called out for their especially high number of sexual assaults, this year's report shows that such cases are becoming more equal between the five branches.

"One of our prevention efforts over the past year focused on preparing leaders at all levels to better reach our youngest Service members who are most at risk," said SAPR director Nate Galbraith.

"Helping our newest enlisted leaders and supervisors create healthy unit climates will benefit our military and all those who serve," he said.

Twitter on Wednesday offered researchers to access real-time conversations data on its platform to help them deepen their understanding of the disease.

The project is aimed at gathering information about the spread of the illness, assessing the emergency response and communication trends during the crisis, and tackling misinformation.

"This is a unique dataset that covers many tens of millions of tweets daily," the US social network said in a blog.

"The conversations happening on Twitter are highly insightful and have the potential to help the world better understand the COVID-19 pandemic."

Access to Twitter's real-time data could also help develop artificial intelligence tools for scientists working to quell the global outbreak.

"Public conversation can help the world learn faster, solve problems better and realize we're all in this together," Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said.
