Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be unveiling a new ensign of the Indian Navy at the aircraft carrier Vikrant Commissioning event on September 2, officials said on Tuesday.

“Prime Minister will commission the first indigenously designed and built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. The Prime Minister will also unveil the new Naval Ensign (Nishaan), doing away with the colonial past and befitting the rich Indian maritime heritage,” read a statement by PMO.

“The Indian Navy would get a new insignia without the Saint George’s cross which has been there on its flag ever since the British put it on it during the pre-independence era,” Navy officials said here.

It was removed from the flag during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government between 2001 to 2004 but soon after Sonia Gandhi-led UPA came back to power, they brought it back citing certain issues raised by the then Navy officials.

The officials said the government is choosing from around 10 different designs that have been given to them by the naval headquarters.

The suggestions range from depicting 11 waves on the flag representing 11 different coastal states to showcasing the different commands of the force.

There was also a suggestion about including a sign from the times of the ancient navies of India which included the Cholas and later the Marathas.

Sources said the design is expected to be unveiled on the day of commissioning itself. After the Prime Minister’s approval, the President will give her final approval as the supreme commander of the armed forces.

Iran is pressing ahead with its rollout of an upgrade to its advanced uranium enrichment programme, a report by the U.N. nuclear watchdog seen by Reuters on Monday showed, even as the West awaits Iran's response on salvaging its 2015 nuclear deal.&nbsp;

The first of three cascades, or clusters, of advanced IR-6 centrifuges recently installed at the underground Fuel Enrichment Plant (FEP) at Natanz is now enriching, the report said, the latest underground site at which the advanced machines have come onstream.

Diplomats say the IR-6 is its most advanced model, far more efficient than the first-generation IR-1 - the only one the deal lets it enrich with.&nbsp;

For more than a year Iran has been using IR-6 centrifuges to enrich uranium to up to 60% purity, close to weapons-grade, at an above-ground plant at Natanz.&nbsp;

Recently it has expanded its enrichment with IR-6 machines at other sites. Last month a second IR-6 cascade at Fordow, a site buried inside a mountain, started enriching to up to 20%.&nbsp;

In the confidential report to U.N. member states, the watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, wrote: "On 28 August 2022, the Agency verified at FEP that Iran was feeding UF6 enriched up to 2% U-235 into the IR-6 cascade ... for the production of UF6 enriched up to 5% U-235."&nbsp;

Iran and the United States appear to be inching towards an agreement to revive the 2015 deal, which placed restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for lifting sanctions against Tehran. That deal unravelled after a U.S. withdrawal in 2018 prompted Iran to breach those restrictions one by one.&nbsp;

After more than a year of indirect talks, Iran has said it will soon respond to the latest U.S. comments on a compromise text submitted by the European Union, which is coordinating the talks.&nbsp;

Iran steps up underground uranium enrichment, IAEA report says

The violent protests in Iraq got worse on Monday as the clashes between the country’s forces and Iraqi Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's followers ended up claiming 15 lives and injuring over a hundred people.&nbsp;

The protesters were already staging sit-ins in front of the Presidential palace in Baghdad and the news of Al-Sadr quitting politics amidst the ongoing political crisis prompted them to break into the Green Zone.&nbsp;

According to the local media reports, the military ended up using stun grenades and tear gas in order to contain the crowd and in the process, a number of people ended up losing their lives on Monday.&nbsp;

It was a public uproar similar to what the world witnessed in Sri Lanka after the public broke into the residence of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's palace&nbsp;in protests over the economic crisis in the country.&nbsp;

The FBI conducted the raid on Trump’s residence in Florida after speaking to a number of witnesses and coming to the conclusion that the former president was in possession of documents pertaining to national security and also containing proof of “obstruction of justice”, according to an affidavit.&nbsp;

The affidavit further claimed that the FBI recovered 11 sets of classified documents from the residence and they found three classifications of materials – “Confidential”, “Top Secret” and “Secret”.&nbsp;

Since the raid, Trump has alleged that this was a targeted attack by the authorities ahead of the elections and his team ask for the documents to be examined by a court-appointed “special master”.&nbsp;

The Solomon Islands has decided to suspend the entry of all foreign navy ships into its ports, the prime minister’s office said on Tuesday. According to the official statement, the decision was taken for the proper adoption of a new approval process for vessels in order to safeguard their security.&nbsp;

The announcement came after the United States had alleged that it was just their navy vessels which were not allowed to enter the ports of the Solomon Islands. The US embassy in Canberra, Australia earlier said that the Solomon Islands have put a “moratorium on all US navy vessels entering its ports”.&nbsp;

Earlier in the year, the Solomon Islands signed a security pact with China and that further strained their relationship with the US and its allies. Although the government denied any restrictions on US vessels for some time, a US Coast Guard vessel was not granted permission to enter the port last week. "On August 29, the United States received formal notification from the Government of the Solomon Islands regarding a moratorium on all naval visits, pending updates in protocol procedures," the US embassy said. However, a US doctor ship – Mercy – is currently in the Solomon Islands as it entered before the regulations were in place.
