It’s not every day that you’re genuinely excited about a product that has just been announced in India. I had first heard about the Sony WF-1000XM3 TWS earbuds months ago when many of my colleagues had travelled abroad for an event. They picked up these earphones on their way back and have been raving about them ever since.

Sony has launched these TWS earbuds in the Indian market a year after they were released in the USA. As the saying goes though, “better late than never”.

Let me tell you why.

Now, the top-of-the-line - WF-1000XM3 - goes head-to-head with the Apple AirPods Pro, Samsung Galaxy Buds Live, Jabra Elite 75t, Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 and others. Priced at Rs 19,990, the terribly named WF-1000XM3 from Sony are on the upper range.

Fortunately, though, the TWS earbuds from Sony have a lot going for them.

The one thing you notice right out of the box is the elegance that the case and earbuds carry. The copper and black dual-tone finish are premium through and through. The case does seem bulkier than the competition. It becomes understandable when you take the earbuds out of the case. They are larger than you’d think compared to the competition. Surprisingly, they weigh just 8.5g each and, once you find a comfortable fit, they are good to wear for hours on end.

Finding that comfortable fit though is the problem. I went through all different eartips (there are seven different sizes in the box) and tried to twist and turn the earbuds in my ear.

The earbuds come with what Sony calls a ‘tri-hold structure’, leaning upon three key parts of the ear. This is supposed to be for a better fit. Nonetheless, after fiddling with them for a couple of days, I got a fit that was comfortable enough for hours on end. Luckily, after finding the right fit, these earbuds never seem to want to fall out. Even during an intense workout.

One downside is the fact that the case is chunkier than most of the competitors’ cases. The case also doesn’t have an LED indicator for battery level. The case also lacks wireless charging, which is a strange omission for TWS earbuds at this price.

The earbuds also lack any IP rating and hence they aren’t sweat/water resistance. Another thing to note if you’re going to use these while jogging or going to the gym daily.

Active noise-cancelling leads the way

With my gripes out of the way, let me just tell you that the WF-1000XM3 earbuds sound exceptionally good. Thanks to the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1e chip and Dual Noise Sensor Technology, Sony leads the way in active noise-cancellation (ANC). No competitor comes close.

The QN1e chip also allows for better battery life, which I’ll get to in a moment. There may be no aptX HD Bluetooth support but unless you’re a hardcore audiophile, you probably won’t miss is.

No matter what track you play, the balanced audio signature shines across all frequency ranges. The vocals are crisp and the instruments are distinguishable. From Iron Maiden to Bollywood hits and even Hanz Zimmer’s soundtracks, the WF-100XM3 handles every track with aplomb. There is that thumping bass as well for though who like it.

I was surprised by the fact that these tiny earbuds can have such a wide soundstage. It definitely feels like the sound is surrounding you from all sides.&nbsp;

Furthermore, it’s the ANC that shines through and through. While I was walking on the road, the traffic noises were completely blocked out. I even couldn’t hear the people talking loudly next to me.

Call quality was also something that I was impressed with. I could hear people clearly and vice-versa. There was also no lag or any sort of distortion, which is a boon in these times.

Connectivity: Good but not the best

Pairing the earphones is seamless and connecting to the Sony app is even easier. I had no problem stepping dozens of feet away from my device and still hearing the crystal clear sound. The only niggle I had was that the right earbud sometimes got disconnected. I’ve reset the earbuds and there have been no problems in the last day or so. So maybe it was just a temporary problem.

Battery life: Brilliant

With ANC turned on, I was constantly getting around five and a half hours of battery life. The charging case is good for an additional three full chargers of the earbuds. That’s about sixteen and a half hours in total. Not the best in class but pretty consistently good, I must say.

Verdict: Are these worth the premium price tag?

The only people to whom I’d not recommend these TWS earbuds are those who need it for their ‘active’ lifestyle, namely exercising. For them, the clearcut option is the Jabra Elite Active 75t. Nothing even comes close to those for fitness-oriented earbuds.

For everyone else it is totally worth it. If you can afford to spend Rs 20,000 on a pair of TWS earbuds then don’t look elsewhere. These are much better than the AirPods Pro from Apple.

A little bit lower down the price range one can find the Galaxy Buds Live and Jabra Elite 75t, both excellent in their own respect, but what Sony has, no one else has. That’s a great pair of active noise-cancelling TWS earbuds.

Sony WF-1000XM3 review: Truly wireless earbuds for the audiophiles

Samsung announced its flagship Galaxy Note 20 Ultra smartphone at a time when the pandemic was still raging. The Note line of devices is the cornerstone of everything Samsung does in the smartphone business. While the Galaxy S line of devices are equally powerful, it’s the Note series that elevates the smartphone game year after year.

Back in August, the Note 20 Ultra was put on sale in India at a starting price of Rs 1,04,999. That’s a hefty asking price during a worldwide pandemic. Budgets may be stretched but if the product is that good, then why not?

I’ve been using the smartphone for over a month now and here’s why I think the Note 20 Ultra has a lot to offer

Design: Similar to the previous Note 10+

Let’s start with the design. The smartphone is all-screen at the front, while the back is covered with glass and has curved sides with a thin metal band. There’s the flat top and bottom. It’s one of those designs that immediately stands out despite its gigantic nature.

The 6.9-inch QHD+ AMOLED display is simply stunning to look at. It’s the back of the smartphone that will attract all the attention though. It’s got an enormous camera bump. So much so that the smartphone will never lie flat on a table when on its back.

What’s best about the rear panel is the frosted glass back. Probably the best Samsung has ever used. It hides fingerprints more than most other phones and also provides for a comfortable grip in one’s hand. In certain situations - answering calls and checking notifications - one-handed usage may be possible but this is really a phone for both your hands.

Samsung’s Note 20 Ultra is the first smartphone in the world to use the new Gorilla Glass Victus on the front and back. It can withstand drops up to 2 metres and is twice as scratch-resistant as compared to Gorilla Glass 6.

The camera module is covered with Gorilla Glass 6. Despite a few drops and a couple of nicks here and there, there hasn’t been a single dent on my Note 20 Ultra. It is one sturdy device.

Mystic Bronze goodness

Is the mystic bronze colour really all that it is hyped up to be? The answer to that is YES. It may look like rose gold in certain lightings but it’s got this understated elegance to it. Thanks to the matte finish, there are close to zero fingerprints.

Display: Gorgeousness

The best-in-class display shows off its strengths on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.. It might be massive at 6.9 inches but it is pretty faultless. The colours are vivid and punchy and when maxed out at QHD+ resolution, binge-watching is a super treat.

The 120Hz screen refresh rate has been much better implemented than on the Galaxy S20 Plus and S20 Ultra. There’s the “Adaptive” motion smoothness, that adjusts the refresh rate based on the action being performed on the screen. Essentially, this saves battery in the long-run.

The one negative is the optical fingerprint scanner that is buried under the display. It’s easy to set up but the positioning is off. It’s the exact same sensor as in the Note 10+ but it’s inconsistent and slow.

Curved screens: Yay or nay?

The curved display of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra looks immersive, with its waterfall edge. But the edge-to-edge display makes it easy for accidental touches to occur. It’s more prominent when gripping the phone with one hand and typing with the other. Far too many times I unintentionally touched a part of the display I didn’t want to and it got in the way of my typic. Sometimes, an app would be closed by accident.

Some touch rejection along the edges would make this issue mostly go away.

Performance: Will breeze through any task

Despite the Indian variant of the Note 20 Ultra having the Exynos 990 chipset and not the Snapdragon 865+, the smartphone can handle any task with aplomb.

Whether it is capturing multiple photos, flipping through social media feeds, playing game after game, or just reading, the Note 20 Ultra will never slow down.

The Note 20 Ultra developed significant heat during my usage. Whether it was playing Call of Duty: Mobile, taking multiple pictures or even just charging the smartphone, the Note 20 Ultra got hotter than usual. It wasn’t too hot to hold at any point though.

Software: One UI 2.5

Samsung’s Note 20 Ultra runs the latest One UI 2.5 based on Android 10. It’s almost identical to S20 Ultra but has some nifty S Pen features such as handwriting recognition, translation and gesture support and various screen writing and screenshot tools.&nbsp;

One UI 2.5 may be filled with Samsung apps and a Galaxy Store (that basically acts as a duplicate), but the software works well and is very heavily-customised to suit the consumers’ needs. Samsung has promised three years of major Android updates and monthly security patches which bodes well for the company’s outlook.

Battery life: Middling at best

With the Galaxy S20 Ultra there was rarely a time I had to charge the smartphone in the same day. Samsung decided to stick with a 4,500 mAh despite the huge display and state-of-the-art processor. Sure, it is an improvement over the Note 10+’s 4,300 mAh battery, but was hardly an improvement in real world usage.

The Note 20 Ultra lasted me a day and over 5 hours of screen-on-time but barely any charge leftover to last through the night. I always have to put it on charge before hitting the sack.

With the S20 Ultra earlier this year, I rarely had to charge it at night. It was only in the morning, while getting ready, did I put it for charge.

The Note 20 Ultra ships with a 25W charger which means the phone takes about 70 minutes to reach a full charge from being dead. The Note 20 Ultra also supposes 15W wireless charging and reverse wireless charging.

Cameras: The all-important laser autofocus sensor

One of the biggest downfalls of the S20 Ulta’s camera was blurry shots. The S20 Ultra had 100x digital zoom but the photos were blurry in both zoom shots and general shots.

The laser autofocus helps with all kinds of shorts. It provides for less blurry photos on the whole. Even those with the shakiest of hands get a huge benefit here.

Also, the Note 20 Ultra uses pixel-binning technology. This basically means that it uses a higher lens to capture a shot as smaller megapixels. Then it combines them for a rich and detailed shot. A 108-megapixel lens delivers 27-megapixel shots. It combines four pixels into one.

The Note 20 Ultra has a triple-camera setup plus the laser autofocus sensor.

In good lighting, the photos are rich in detail with great colours. The low-light performance has been vastly improved. Using the Night mode is a pleasure.

It is the 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera that steals the show. One of the best implementations of an ultra-wide camera on any phone.

The 12-megapixel telephoto camera is definitely a step up from the S20 Ultra. The optical zoom makes a difference but going into digital zoom and anything over 30x is just not good.

Video quality up to 8K is also quite good and you get a range of shooting options. Finally, the 10-megapixel selfie camera is simply excellent.

This is by far Samsung’s best camera on any of its smartphones. It’s a reliable camera that you can just pull out of your pocket and shoot dozens of great photos in mere minutes.

S Pen: Game-changer

The S Pen on the Note series of devices has been a game changer since Day One. This time around, the latency on the S Pen has been drastically reduced making it a pleasure to use all the time. Taking notes is faster and more accurate.

Final observations: Worth the price tag?

While I love the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and it is Samsung’s best photo to date, expensive smartphones just don’t cut it anymore. Going down the ladder, there are plenty of other phones that offer almost as much as the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra but for far less.

Samsung played it safe with the Note 20 Ultra but that isn’t to cut into the fact that this is a fantastic device. Despite some shortcomings, the Note 20 Ultra has risen to the top of the Android smartphone charts.

During a pandemic nonetheless, spending over one lakh rupees is sheer exuberance. Once the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is on discount, it will be a fantastic deal.

True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earbuds are all the rage these days. Almost every audio and smartphone manufacturer has gotten in on the game. They range from under Rs 1,000 all the way to over Rs 25,000. That’s a mighty large price range.

The two most important aspects of a TWS earbud that a company needs to get right is battery life and audio quality.

A giant in the technology world from Japan, Sony, has finally gotten into the game in India with the launch of the WF-XB700 and WF-SP800N. The higher-end WF-1000XM3 is launching on August 6th.

Today we’ll be taking a look at the WF-XB700 that is priced at Rs 9,990.

Fit: Bulky, weird and uncomfortable

Sony’s WF-XB700 earbuds have an unusual design. They may not be sticking out of your ears but compared to a lot of the competitors they surely do stand out. It’s just that I found them uncomfortable while wearing them for long hours. Over the days though it got easier to wear them as I got used to the design.

The build quality though is superb on these earbuds. They’re made of plastic but they hold their own. They’ve got a matte finish and a touch of gloss. As always, extra silicone tips are provided in the box and you can pick the size that suits your ear.

According to Sony, each earbud weighs just 8gm but in reality I found them a touch heavier.

The earbuds didn’t fall out of my ear at all, even when running, and that’s something Sony seems to have gotten right. You just need to twist them in place and you’re good to go.

Case: Compact and easy to open

The oval-shaped magnetic charging case comes in an oval-shaped design (like Samsung’s Galaxy Buds) and has a translucent cover.

There’s a USB Type-C port at the back (a cable is provided in the box). Magnets hold the earphones securely in the case and they won’t fall out even if you tried. There is a red charging LED light that you can see when the case is closed. Flipping the case open one-handed is a pretty easy task.

The earbuds are rated for 9 hours on a single charge while the case is good for an extra 9 hours of battery life.

Features: IPX4 rating!

One feature I feel that shouldn’t be left out of any TWS earbud going forward is an IPX4 rating. TWS earbuds are meant to be used both inside and outside. Whether sunshine or rain, your music/calls shouldn’t have to stop.

IPX4 is the rating for water and dust resistance. This means the Sony WF-XB700 can withstand sweat rain and even a good amount of dust and dirt.

Both earbuds also get a physical button. It’s not ideally placed and I’m not certain they are better than touch controls. For the most part it works but sometimes it’s hard to press the physical button without moving the earbud a lot.

A feature that is lacking though is that there is no app for EQ. There’s no way to manually adjust it. One can’t change the bass. Sony does have a Headphone Connect app so it’s strange as to why they just didn’t add support for the WF-XB700 earbuds.

Lastly, one more omission from Sony is the lack of active noise cancellation. It isn’t a given in this price range but it would have made for a nice addition. Nonetheless, the earbuds offer fairly good passive noise isolation even in loud environments.

Audio quality: For the bass lovers out there!

Opening up the earbuds and syncing them to my smartphone was almost instantaneous. You just open the case, find the buds in the Bluetooth devices settings and pair them up. It’s that easy. In fact, the connection is strong for up to 10 meters.

The tiny little physical button can perform a variety of taste. A single press on the left bud will increase the volume. Press and hold it to decrease the volume. The single press on the right bud plays and pauses the music. A double press will take you to the next song and a triple click will take you to the previous track. You can’t adjust these settings and that’s one thing that irked me.

With that out of the way, let’s get to the audio quality now. The Sony WF-XB700’s are loud, bass-first earbuds. Constantly I had to make a note of keeping the earbuds to a volume level of 75 percent. Anything over that and my ears would get instantly overwhelmed.

The lows on the WF-XB700’s are boosted with ample bass and a whole lot of thump. Sometimes the lows are exaggerated but thankfully it doesn’t overpower the balance of sounds. On jazz tracks like Dave Brubeck’s Take Five, you can clearly hear the arrangement of instruments. On a whole different note, pop sounds are exactly as they should be. Popping and thumping in your years while you bob your head to the summer’s biggest hits.

Songs like Kanye West’s Touch The Sky shone through. The vocals were clear and the high-mids shone through. The WF-XB700’s got enough punchiness to keep them going.

Saying all of this, if you’re really a bass-lover then you’re going to love these TWS earbuds.

Podcasts were also crystal clear. I had no issues hearing each individual talk and argue on the various podcasts I listen to.

Call quality: Will suit you fine

One can’t really complain about the call quality here. While wearing a mask and on a socially distant walk, the people on the other side of the call could hear me clearly and I could hear them just as well.

The voice may be hollow at times but it shouldn’t deter you. The only negative is that ambient noise seeps through to the call at times. Maybe a software update can fix this.

Battery life: Amazing!

Sony adversities 9 hours of battery life on a single charge for the WF-XB700. I got just about 9 hours with about 70% volume at all times. This is in the top tier of battery life on TWS earbuds. The case can also charge the buds one whole time. So 18 hours of battery life without having to plug it in.

One thing I’d like to mention is that even though I always used both the earbuds together, the right one lost battery faster than the left one. It fixed itself after a few full charges but just something to note.

Note: It’ll take you almost 3 hours to fully charge the case.

Verdict: One of the best TWS earbuds under Rs 10,000

Kudos to Sony for pricing these TWS earbuds under Rs 10,000. That puts it in the lower range of the TWS earbud field. It’s a crowded field below Rs 10,000 but these match up to the best in the industry.

These certainly aren’t budget TWS earbuds (there are far cheaper options) but these also offer a far superior audio experience. Some features like wear detection, lack of active noise cancellation, and issues with the physical button (and how the consumer can’t customise it) may not sit well with some people. Sony WF-XB700 review: Water-resistant, bass-first, TWS earbuds for under Rs 10,000

With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing us to mostly stay indoors and practice social distancing, a majority of people have started spending more time on their laptops - whether it is just doom-scrolling or gaming - than before.

Personally, I’ve spent more hours gaming during the lockdown than I did in all of 2019. If you’re into gaming or just looking to get started, then listen carefully because I’m here to tell you about one of the best budget-friendly gaming laptops in the Indian market today. It’s none other than the Asus TUF A15. The TUF A15 from Asus starts from Rs 60.990 (nearly 815 USD) and comes in two colours - Bonfire Black and Fortress Grey.

The gaming world was given a jolt when Asus announced it was going with AMD instead of Intel. Asus felt it was an inspired decision. Now that the laptops have rolled out to the public, we have evidence of just why they made that choice.

The laptops under the TUF series - there is also a TUF A17 model - are powered by AMD’s Ryzen 7 Mobile series processors.

I have been using the Fortress Grey version for over two weeks and here’s how it fared.

Design &amp; Build Quality

The TUF line up of gaming notebooks from Asus is not as premium looking as their ROG counterparts. Saying that, they still look nice on the outside and for a mid-ranger, it is quite a solid looker. The design is basic with the TUF logo on the top and a textured finished surrounding it.

The laptop is made out of plastic and is prone to easy damage if you drop it or keep brushing it against the walls. The hinge also didn’t feel as solid as I’d have liked.

There’s no bezel-less display - though the bezels are pretty slim - and the overall built is quite thick and chunky coming in at 2.3 kgs. It’s not as portable as some of the other gaming laptops these days but with a relatively cheaper price tag one can hardly complain. Furthermore, it’s not like we’re going away from our desks for long periods these days.

From the moment you open the lid you can see that Asus has made choices clearly targeted at the gamers. The keyboard has RGB lighting while the WASD (very popular keys for gamers) are highlighted with a translucent colouring to help them stand out.&nbsp;

The deck of the TUF A15 has a brushed metal finish. At the back of the laptop, the display hinges sandwich the pair of vents that are meant to keep the laptop cool.&nbsp;

Last but not least, the laptop is MIL-STD-810H tested. This means it can withstand extreme conditions. I wouldn’t recommend drop testing it as the plastic frame can give way but it seems like it’ll handle the occasional bumps and bruises.

The chassis can be opened easily with a screwdriver and allows the consumers to upgrade the machine - RAM and SSD - as per their requirements.

Display

The TUF A15 comes with a 15.6-inch FHD IPS panel. There are two options when buying this laptop. You can opt for a 60Hz panel or a 144Hz panel. The latter is the one to go for if you’re serious about gaming. A high-refresh-rate panel is a must for gamers as it makes the experience that much better.

With all that being said, the display is quite dim. This is strictly meant as an indoors laptop. The laptop isn’t meant for photographers or video editors. The colour accuracy is sub-par and just not something I was expecting.&nbsp;

Gamers may not care too much about this but the competition will surely have something to say.

Keyboard, trackpack and ports

What’s good though is the ample choice of ports on the TUF A15. You get a HDMI port, an ethernet port, two standard USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type A ports and one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port with support for DisplayPort 1.4. There’s also the power supply port.&nbsp;

The trackpad itself is nothing special and the keys aren’t great for travel. This is decidedly mid-level and Asus could have done some more work in these areas.

Performance

The laptop has three options - Ryzen 5 4600H, Ryzen 7 4800H and Ryzen 9 4900H - for its processor. All three of them are quite capable in their own respect.&nbsp;

The unit I’ve been reviewing TUF A15 (FA566) comes with an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H processor, an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, a 512GB NVMe SSD and a 1TB hard drive along with the 144Hz display.&nbsp;

I started out reviewing the laptop by playing a casual game called Age of Empires 2: Definite Edition and ended it with some Battlefield V, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and some Need For Speed.

While high-end games won’t run on high settings they’ll run smooth at medium-settings. Lower end and some of the older games will work without a hitch. The laptop also stays relatively cool while gaming thanks to the vents which will come as a relief to many games out there.

Battery Life

One big disappointment, but something which isn’t surprising, is the below average battery life on the TUF A15. The new Ryzen 4000 series processors promises good battery but Asus only chose to pack a 48Whr battery into the chassis. That’s the problem.

I managed to get around 4 and a half hours of battery life with office work and some light gaming. If you game straight while on the battery it’ll die within 3 and a half hours. No one recommends that one should play games without the laptop plugged in.

The same laptop manages to pack a larger battery in the model released in the USa so we wonder why Asus couldn’t have brought it over to India.

Verdict

Asus has managed to stay ahead in the budget-friendly gaming crowd here in India. At a starting price of just Rs 60,990, this is an incredibly good price for those looking to get started in the world of gaming and even those who just like to play for fun.

You’ve got a good build, a laptop that stays cool while gaming and performs exceptionally well for its price.

I’m glad Asus chose AMD over Intel for their gaming laptops in 2020. AMD has really proven itself and is a major threat to Intel. With an Intel chip inside these laptops, Asus wouldn’t have been able to get the price down Rs 60,990.

It’s a strong gaming laptop with just a few issues that we hope Asus is able to fix when their new models are launched toward the end of the year.

Don’t go for its looks but go for the AMD guts inside of it. It’ll comfortably suit all your gaming needs (unless you’re an esports champion) and will even suffice for day-to-day work.&nbsp;

This time though, it’ll be an online-event as the coronavirus pandemic has halted travel and in-person events across the world. The Unpacked event is one of the two annual events hosted by Samsung but arguably the more important one.

At the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked 2020 event, Samsung is inviting us to explore their latest ecosystem of Galaxy devices that are “designed to empower” our lives.

While the prized package will be the upcoming Galaxy Note 20/Note 20 Ultra (if that is what they end up calling them), there is also going to be the brand-new Galaxy Tab S7/Tab S7+ (No one is sure if they’ll release two variants or if they’ll just be two sizes of the same tablet), Galaxy Watch 3 and the Galaxy Buds Live (bean-shaped TWS earphones). That’s a hefty lineup for Samsung going into their fall showcase.

With just about two weeks to go for the event, let’s take a look at how the Galaxy S20 Ultra, Note 10 Plus and Galaxy Tab S6 fare in 2020 and what to expect from the showcase event of the year.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ &amp; Galaxy Note 20/Note 20 Ultra

Samsung’s Note-series of smartphones has been a revolutionary ever since they were first launched in 2011. Over the years they’ve been considered the one of the first successful examples of phablets (A combination of a phone and a tablet). The Note series devices have also brought big-displays to the mainstream.

What really has stood out with the Note-series has been the S-Pen. Other companies have tried and failed but Samsung stuck to its guts and with the Galaxy Note 10 plus, knocked it out of the park.

I’ve been using the Galaxy Note 10 Plus for a year - on-and-off for the past six months) - and I think it’s really held up as a wonderful multitasking device. I think the S-Pen can be further upgraded to do more going forward but let’s rewind a year.&nbsp;

The Galaxy Note 10 Plus was the first modern phone to drop the 3.5mm headphone jack. That was a paradigm shift in the industry with many other players following suit. It was also the first Note to embrace the bezel-less trend we’re all comfortable with. Last but not least, it also went far and away from the distinct bold colours and gave us the Aura Glow.

The only thing I really miss while using Note 10 Plus is a high-refresh rate display. Either 90Hz or 120Hz. The Note 10 Plus’ display is excellent. The colours and sunlight eligibility are superb. Samsung has always aced it with its displays. A high-refresh rate display comes at the expense of battery life and with the criticism toward the S-series a few months ago, there is hope that Samsung would have found a sweet middle spot between high-refresh rate and battery life.

Coming back to the all-important S-Pen. It’s a handy little stylus that comes with the device and can perform a plethora of tasks. Most importantly, one can scroll using the stylus, highlight text more precisely (thanks to the floating cursor) and just take notes with it. Last year though, with the Note 10 Plus, came an S-Pen that had a button on its side. It can be used as a remote shutter. A game changer. One needn’t use a self-timer anymore.

One last thing, Samsung needs to fix the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor in the upcoming Note 20 device. Samsung failed to improve it with the S20-series and all hopes are fixated on the Note 20-series.

If you were to buy the Note 10 Plus in 2020 then you’d only be missing out on 5G (doesn’t really matter here in India until end of 2021), a high-refresh rate display and the best cameras on a smartphone. Saying that, the Note 10 still feels every bit as modern as when I first got my hands on it near the end of 2019.

Nothing comes close to Apple’s iPad in the tablet industry. Unfortunately though, you’ve got to be deep into the Apple ecosystem to want one of those. On the Android side, Samsung is leading the charge for many a year. Samsung further consolidated their market share with the Galaxy Tab S6 last year. This time around, Samsung is rumoured to be bringing Galaxy Tab S7 in two sizes.&nbsp;

Samsung has been on top of the tablet industry on the Android side for many a year and 11" and 12.4". A press render shows the Tab S7 being eerily similar to the iPad Pro.

The tablets are likely to be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 865+ chipset with 5G support and an S Pen. Furthermore, the larger tablet is rumoured to come with a 10,090 mAh battery, while the smaller one will have a 7,700-7,900 mAh battery cell. Finally, the display will be AMOLED and the speakers will be “tuned by AKG” (the sound engineering company now owned by Samsung).

Over the past eight months I’ve been using the Galaxy Tab S6 almost exclusively. My Dell XPS is way too old and it’s just easier and lighter to pull out the Galaxy Tab S6 for daily work (which for me, is mostly writing).&nbsp;

The Galaxy Tab S6 is by no means a tablet replacement but if you’re not a graphic designer nor a gamer then for day-to-day activity, this will suit you pretty well. Having the DeX mode also enables you to use the tablet like you would a laptop. It’s limited in what it can do as a laptop but the potential is certainly there.

Lugging the Galaxy Tab S6 around Delhi was pretty much no problem. I could take it to cafes, friends houses, the park and more. I’d have no problem plonking it down, and getting to my writing within seconds. Provided there was a flat surface, of course.

With the Galaxy Tab S7 there is hope that the official Tab Keyboard cover would do a whole lot more. For one, the back cover could be a lot more sturdy. The glue that sticks the cover to the Tab has come off way too many times for me during my typing and that has broken my chain of thought.

With fast charging up to 45W coming to the Tab S7, one needn’t worry about battery life anymore.

One thing Samsung, and all Android tablet players need to scale up significantly is the number of apps optimised for these tablets. It pales in comparison to iPadOS.

Still, one is optimistic that the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 models will be even closer to the iPad Pro from Apple and even surpass it in some areas.

This is another category where Apple is head and shoulders above its Android-based competitors. The Apple Watch has done wonders for the company but yet again you’ve got to be tied to the Apple ecosystem.

On the Android side there is a whole lot more competition. Samsung may be leading with the Galaxy Watch 4G and the Galaxy Watch Active 2 but the competition - Huawei GT2e, Fitbit Versa 2 and others - isn’t far behind.

What Samsung has up its sleeve is the rotating bezel on the Galaxy Watch 4G. It was absent on the Galaxy Watch Active and Watch Active 2 but is set to make a comeback with the upcoming Galaxy Watch 3.&nbsp;

The Galaxy Watch 3 will also reportedly be getting a heart rate monitor with 8 pulse-reading photodiodes and support for blood pressure monitoring. Furthermore, it could also be getting an electrocardiogram sensor. That’s something Apple implemented but was missing on the Android side.

I’ve been using Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4G for many months now and it is a fantastic watch. Two things have been bugging me while using this watch though. First, it is more of a smartwatch than a fitness tracker. I get that it isn’t purely a fitness tracker like FitBit or Garmin and it’s trying to be a cross between the two but the activity monitor could be much better at tracking my workouts and my walks. I’m hoping Samsung works on its fitness smarts so that I don’t get told to walk when I’ve already embarked upon one.

Second, the watch face is a little bulky. I’ve gotten used to it and actually kind of like it but a lot of people have been put off by its sheer size. It’s a nice looking watch but could do with a little bit of trimming. Battery life could also get a boost but seeing as I get over two days of battery life as compared to other watch’s even tinier batteries, I’m quite happy.

Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked 2020: What impact will the upcoming Note 20, Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Tab S7 have?

It’s been over three months since I got a new analog watch. A watch which has been garnering me a lot of compliments. It’s a watch that, as a reviewer, I’ve had to wear on and off because of a couple of smartwatches and fitness bands that I still had to evaluate.&nbsp;

During the pandemic-induced lockdown though, I’ve tried to wear the watch as much as I can. During the day, while taking a shower and even when sleeping, the watch is on me at all times. Why may you ask that I’m wearing a watch (and not a smartwatch with all its fitness and sleep tracking) all day all night long? Well, let me step back a bit and explain.&nbsp;

Teslar watches - a blend of “American technology and Swiss precision” - have finally made it to the Indian shores. It’s a regular wristwatch fitted with a chip that protects you from harmful EMF (extreme medium frequencies) exposure. The wellness watches are encouraging a consciousness towards greater well-being.&nbsp;

By mimicking Earth’s natural frequency, it can reduce the negative effects of stress and help the human body “restore, revitalize and heal itself more effectively from the adverse effects of artificial, man-made electromagnetic pollution”. In theory, the watch should help promote a calmer and more relaxed mind, leading to more positivity in one’s life and even a better sleep pattern.&nbsp;

There are a couple of studies on the long-term negative effects that EMF exposure can have on the human body. Electromagnetic hypersensitivity isn’t a recognised medical condition though.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Enough technical jargon. I don’t understand much of what the watch does, and boy I don’t even know what the two buttons flanking the rotating crown do. It’s a watch that is eye-catching and that’s foremost why I loved wearing it outside the house.&nbsp;

That begs the question; why am I wearing the watch more during lockdown than before this pandemic hit us? It’s a simple, one-word answer; psychological.&nbsp;

I feel great wearing the Teslar Re-Balance T-1 Chrono watch that I have. It’s in black and it’s every bit premium that you can imagine. From random strangers on the street to people next to me at a cafe I &nbsp;used to - pre-pandemic induced lockdowns - frequent, the watch has got glowing reviews from just about everyone. The watch suits my profile. What more can one ask from a watch that has a starting price of Rs 41,495?&nbsp;

Well, in a world of smartwatches, a whole lot more!&nbsp;

I’m generally a positive, optimistic (closer to realistic) and happy human being. I also sleep soundly, getting up very rarely in the middle of the night to visit the washroom or to have a couple of sips of water. With the pandemic raining down upon us, the thinking was that this watch would help me keep my chin up and not fall down with news of deaths spiralling on my computer screen streaming any number of news channels.&nbsp;

I was very sceptical of the ‘wellness’ benefits from the watch but, for the first week or so, I gave it the benefit of doubt.&nbsp;

For the first few days, I slept on average, a half-hour longer than I normally would have. I didn’t get up in the middle of the night and neither did I have trouble falling asleep. With the number of coronavirus cases approaching 50,000, we were only getting started with the negative news all around us. I spent my days writing, cooking, but sleeping a lot more during the day. It seemed like I had a routine going when wearing the watch, but turns out that was far from it.&nbsp;

On the seventh or eighth day of the lockdown, I woke up around five in the morning, went to the washroom, and came back only to fall asleep an hour later.&nbsp;

It was only in the second week that I noticed that my productivity wasn’t dipping. I had gone three whole days without wearing the watch. At first, I felt kind of empty and was brooding about the lack of an eye-catching and classy Swiss-made watch on my wrist. The moment I realised that my day was going along fine and I was sleeping well - despite globally reported coronavirus cases being well over 1 million - was when I didn’t have to flick my wrist every so often just to look at the time and smile at just how gorgeous a watch I was wearing. 
 
It was purely in my head that a watch could alter the way I was feeling on a day-to-day basis. I was smiling more often not because of the reduction of electromagnetic exposure in my day-to-day life but because of how elegant the watch was to look at.&nbsp;

I keep going back to how gorgeous the watch is. The attention to detail is brilliant. There’s the T that’s etched into the crown and then the triangular second’s hand inside the lower subdial. It’s just what you expect from a Swiss-made wristwatch.&nbsp;

In the last week or so, I’ve given the watch another chance. In India, we’re about to cross the 5 lakh mark for confirmed COVID-19 cases. Worldwide, it is soon going to touch 10 million. There is no escaping the grim reality staring at us. Wearing the watch has surely lightened up my days but has done little beyond that to help soothe the nerves inside me on a daily basis.&nbsp;

My takeaway is this. The Teslar Re-Balance T-1 Chrono is an absolute must-have timepiece if one has the money to spare, apart from the fact that some may truly believe in the “wellness” aspect. It’s priced fairly decently for a well-made Swiss timepiece. One cannot call the wristwatch overpriced.&nbsp;&nbsp;

I just can’t recommend it for it’s ‘wellness’ benefits. I didn’t feel any upliftment upon wearing the way daily barring the dozens of compliments I’ve gotten which had stopped since I’ve had to hunker down thanks to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;&nbsp;

I’m generally a positive, optimistic (closer to realistic) and happy human being. I also sleep soundly, getting up very rarely in the middle of the night to visit the washroom or to have a couple of sips of water. With the pandemic raining down upon us, the thinking was that this watch would help me keep my chin up and not fall down with news of deaths spiralling on my computer screen streaming any number of news channels. I was very sceptical of the ‘wellness’ benefits from the watch but, for the first week or so, I gave it the benefit of doubt. For the first few days, I slept on average, a half-hour longer than I normally would have. I didn’t get up in the middle of the night and neither did I have trouble falling asleep. With the number of coronavirus cases approaching 50,000, we were only getting started with the negative news all around us. I spent my days writing, cooking, but sleeping a lot more during the day. It seemed like I had a routine going when wearing the watch, but turns out that was far from it. On the seventh or eighth day of the lockdown, I woke up around five in the morning, went to the washroom, and came back only to fall asleep an hour later. It was only in the second week that I noticed that my productivity wasn’t dipping. I had gone three whole days without wearing the watch. At first, I felt kind of empty and was brooding about the lack of an eye-catching and classy Swiss-made watch on my wrist. The moment I realised that my day was going along fine and I was sleeping well - despite globally reported coronavirus cases being well over 1 million - was when I didn’t have to flick my wrist every so often just to look at the time and smile at just how gorgeous a watch I was wearing. It was purely in my head that a watch could alter the way I was feeling on a day-to-day basis. I was smiling more often not because of the reduction of electromagnetic exposure in my day-to-day life but because of how elegant the watch was to look at. I keep going back to how gorgeous the watch is. The attention to detail is brilliant. There’s the T that’s etched into the crown and then the triangular second’s hand inside the lower subdial. It’s just what you expect from a Swiss-made wristwatch. In the last week or so, I’ve given the watch another chance. In India, we’re about to cross the 5 lakh mark for confirmed COVID-19 cases. Worldwide, it is soon going to touch 10 million. There is no escaping the grim reality staring at us. Wearing the watch has surely lightened up my days but has done little beyond that to help soothe the nerves inside me on a daily basis. My takeaway is this. The Teslar Re-Balance T-1 Chrono is an absolute must-have timepiece if one has the money to spare, apart from the fact that some may truly believe in the “wellness” aspect. It’s priced fairly decently for a well-made Swiss timepiece. One cannot call the wristwatch overpriced. I just can’t recommend it for it’s ‘wellness’ benefits. I didn’t feel any upliftment upon wearing the way daily barring the dozens of compliments I’ve gotten which had stopped since I’ve had to hunker down thanks to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Case and fit: Can wear them for many hours on a stretch&nbsp;

The case itself features a USB Type-C charging point but unfortunately doesn’t support wireless charging like that of the Galaxy Buds+ from Samsung and the AirPods Pro from Apple.&nbsp;

This is because the sheer number of hours they’d be stuck inside your ears, so having something that is comfortable for the long run, is preferable. Let me just say this. The Elite Active 75ts felt comfortable even after using them for five hours straight. In fact, at times, I had forgotten they were in my ears. Each earbud weighs just 5.5g, while the charging case weighs 35g.&nbsp;

Furthermore, having no wires means TWEs are easy to wear in 2020. While we’re all wearing a mask, it’s easy to just pop these truly wireless earbuds into your ear and take them out whenever. You needn’t have to worry about them getting entangled in your mask.&nbsp;

Included in the box are three different-sized pairs of ear tips so that there is a right fit for everyone. For me, it was the medium-sized that fit snugly in my ears and refused to fall out during runs.&nbsp;

The one downside is that there is no active noise cancellation (ANC) like on the cheaper Galaxy Buds+. The earbuds offer good passive noise isolation that reduces ambient noise. This isn’t ANC but one could argue that you wouldn’t really need/use the feature while exercising, especially if it is outdoors. The Elite Active 75ts have a HearThrough function. This lets you simultaneously listen to your music/podcast as well as what is going on nearby.&nbsp;

The Elite Active 75ts&nbsp;sounds way better than they should. The bass is booming and the audio fills your ears like a concert fills a room. The sound comes into your ears just the same way a performance or a movie in a cinema hall does. It doesn’t escape you even for one minute.&nbsp;

There’s also a four-mic array that optimises audio quality during calls. One of the microphones in each earbud is dedicated to noise reduction while making calls.&nbsp;

A much-needed software update&nbsp;

At the end of May, Jabra released an update for the truly wireless earbuds, making them even better and fixing the physical controls that are so hard to get used to. The Jabra Sound+ app now features MySound and MyControls.&nbsp;

MySound customises the audio output based on your hearing. You’re taken through a hearing test - asked to tap the icon at every tone - for each ear individually. Based on the test - frequencies and volumes - the app creates a personalised sound profile. This tech is in collaboration with GN Hearing, a company that’s been developing hearing aids for decades.&nbsp;

MyControls lets you remap the buttons on your earbuds individually. All three controls - single, double or triple pressing a button - can now perform a different action. The one expected feature that hasn’t made it is that MyControls doesn’t allow you to operate one earbud independently. That’s a major disappointment. Jabra has promised to release an update, in the near future, to address this issue.&nbsp;

The Elite Active 75ts are rated at 7.5 hours on a single charge and just about four more charges with the case for a total of 28 hours. I found it to be more or less accurate. I averaged about just over seven hours on a single charge during my test. The charging case died after two whole weeks of listening, which is pretty good.&nbsp;

The charging time though is somewhat slow but that shouldn’t put you off.&nbsp;

Verdict: A must-buy over the regular Elite 75ts&nbsp;

The Jabra Elite Active 75ts have some nifty differences from its elder brother, the Elite 75ts that make it a must-buy in today’s crowded TWEs market. If you really need ANC then you’re the best bet is the Galaxy Buds+ from Samsung.&nbsp;

The Nokia 5310 may win the ‘cutest mobile phone of the year’ award but let me tell you that it isn’t much more than a looker. In a world of Jio Phones from Reliance and other beefier feature phones, Nokia is tapping into nostalgia harder than most.&nbsp;

When I first got my hands on the Nokia 5310, I couldn’t wait to unbox it. With a plethora of Nokia mobile phones still lying around my house, it’s safe to say that prior to 2007 they were a huge hit in my household. From form factor to being packed with extra features, Nokia was way ahead of its time back then. The overall design language of the 2020 Nokia 5310 turned back the time and brought back many memories. From a design standpoint, the Nokia 5310 is faultless. I got the black variant with the red side panels that include the music buttons and I was sold.&nbsp;

Today, society lives on its smartphones more than ever. Whether we’re lying down in bed, commuting to our offices or just lost in a city that isn’t ours, smartphones come in handy in more ways than one. We use them to communicate to our friends and family via texting, calling, video chatting and so much more. These days smartphones come with larger displays, multiple cameras, bigger batteries and enough processing power to get us through a full day of work, rest and relaxation and so much more.&nbsp;

First impressions may only go so far though. Shortly after going through the specifications sheet and turning the phone on I became disappointed. It seems like the brand cannot shake off it’s pre-economic recession traits. The brand has grown in many ways but some of its decisions are baffling in today’s world.&nbsp;

From HMD Global’s standpoint, releasing feature phones in a market like India makes sense. First, the feature phone market is still a large part of the mobile phone industry in India. Second, tapping into that nostalgia helps consumers make an instant connection. Third, according to a CMR report released last week, mobile audio is more important to the consumer than cameras. Fourth, a lot of people are still buying their first ever mobile phone and don’t want to spend a whole lot of dough.&nbsp;

With all this in mind, let’s bring it back to the choices Nokia has made in 2020. The Nokia 5310 comes with a 2.4-inch QVGA display, 8MB RAM, 16MB internal storage (expandable to 32GB via microSD card), a 1,200mAh battery, a VGA camera, dual-front speakers and the most-loved feature, the FM radio.&nbsp;

The camera could have been slightly better and maybe a sharper display, but beyond that, you can’t really fault HMD. With a device this side and a price point palatable for most of the population, there really was not a lot of wriggle room for HMD. There’s also the removable battery that we all miss and the small form factor we certainly loved.&nbsp;

Where you can fault HMD is in the choice of connectivity. In a world of WhatsApp, Facebook and YouTube, the least Nokia could have included is 3G, let alone 4G - the standard offering in 2020. Furthermore, unlike Reliance’s Jio Phone 2, there is no Wi-Fi functionality.&nbsp;

With limited capabilities on the Nokia 5310, one struggles to find a reason to think this feature phone will fly off the shelves (virtual, these days, brought to us by the coronavirus pandemic).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Industry analysts will also wrestle with the mere existence of the Nokia 5310. It’s a refurbished device from 2007. It isn’t particularly new or earth-shattering. The competition will easily take it out with feature phones that have beefier specs and cheaper price points.&nbsp;

At Rs 3,399, it’s puzzling as to what HMD Global’s strategy is for the Nokia 5310. Is it being pitched purely on nostalgia? Is it going to win the hearts of audiophiles? Is it tapping into first-time mobile phone users? Is it a 2G feature phone trying to stay afloat in a sea of 3G/4G feature phones? Who knows.&nbsp;

When I think of feature phones these days and the ways companies can expand their reach is by pitching it as a second ‘phone’. A phone that never dies, and even if you drop it a thousand times, it won’t get rattled.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Still, the omissions made by HMD Global don’t sync up with today’s consumer demands. Shopkeepers across the country (whenever they finally open up) will be struggling to find reasons to pitch this to the influx of customers into their stories.&nbsp;

I know many people love their Bullets Wireless from OnePlus for many years but I was never a fan of their neckband design. I don’t want anything that is remotely heavy sitting on my neck all day long. I’d rather throw a pair of earphones into my pocket.

Still. Saying that the Enco M31’s are one of the lightest neckband earphones I’ve ever tested. During my two-week testing period, there were more than a few times where I forgot they were even resting on my neck. That’s a testament to how lightweight - coming in at just 22 grams - they are.

The Enco M31’s are not only good for listening to while on your daily walk but they’ll also not flap around when you’re running.

Last but not the least, I’d just like to mention a bit about the build quality. The price may make these earbuds seem cheap but they are far from it. The build is sturdy and the neckband itself feels very solid. It doesn’t seem flimsy at all. The wires themselves are quite thick and overall these will last you a long time.

The earphones are IPX5 rating which means that they are sweat-resistant and you can work out with them without hesitation.

The Enco M31’s come with a volume rocker and a multi-function button. The buttons are quite simple to learn.

You long-press on the volume rocker for skipping or going to the previous track. A double-tap on the multi-function button enables the bass mode. A single tap on the multi-function button pauses/plays the music. Finally, snapping the earphones together via the magnets will turn off the earphones completely.

<h2>Sound quality and connectivity: Pretty good!</h2>

The Enco M31’s earphones connect over Bluetooth 5.0 and pairing was super quick. I rarely had any problems connecting to them. Even during my runs, the connection between the Enco M31’s and my smartphone rarely shuttered, and even if it did, it was hardly for a second.

The Enco M31’s come with support for LDAC coding. Something competing earphones don’t offer. That in itself makes these a better buy for audiophiles. The similarly priced OnePlus Wireless Z’s lack any LDAC coding and also have a less refined soundstage.

The best part about the Enco M31’s is the instrument and vocal separation. No matter what song you listen to - from Florence + The Machine’s Dog Days Are Over to Down The Road by C2C - the song is crystal clear. Even during Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars, I could separate Mars’ voice from the crowded background noises.

It’s not to say the M31’s are perfect. In some songs, you’ll get a hollow sound coming from the instruments. It’ll feel like the song is escaping you rather than feeding into you. That rarely happened but it is noticeable whenever it does happen.

There is a ‘bass mode’ on the Enco M31’s but I didn’t really care much for it, to be honest. It doesn’t do enough justice as the song itself - no matter what you’re listening to - sounds a little off at all times.

One of the downsides is the call quality. I found it lacking vs competing headphones. Indoors it was perfectly fine but when I was outdoors there was a lot of disturbance at times and my voice couldn’t be heard for a large part of the call. I had to constantly repeat myself.

Funnily enough, most of my calls outdoors resolved themselves within the first ten minutes. They seemed to get better as the call went on. Still, if you need them purely for call quality, then it’s best to skip them.

Samsung has been on a blitz of sorts in 2020. For many months now Xiaomi and Realme have dominated the budget segment (under Rs 15,000) in the smartphone industry. Samsung is hell-bent on changing that with the recently launched Galaxy M21. It’s a phone that borrows design cues from its predecessor Galaxy M20 and its immediate successors Galaxy M30s/M31, at an economical price of Rs 12,999. &nbsp;

The Galaxy M21 is a smartphone that offers a massive 6,000mAh battery, an AMOLED screen, decent RAM and storage options, a 48-megapixel rear camera and weighs just 164 grams.&nbsp;

While the M21 borrows a lot from other Samsung M-series smartphones, does it have what it takes to stand on its own two feet? Read on to find out.&nbsp;

Design and Display: Plain old boring&nbsp;

Thanks to the polycarbonate body of the Galaxy M21 that covers the entire back and chassis, the smartphone is extremely lightweight. Though this doesn’t feel premium at all. The plastic body lends to its durability. The smartphone is very ergonomically designed and it is a treat to use in one’s hand. &nbsp;

Thanks to the glossy nature of the plastic, the phone is very susceptible to fingerprints. If you choose to use the Galaxy M21 without a case then be prepared to be constantly wiping the back of the smartphone to make it look new and shiny.&nbsp;

You get a 6.4-inch, full HD+ AMOLED (1440x2400 resolution) display with Gorilla Glass 3 protection. It’s got punchy colours and gets bright enough to be used while out and about on a walk. Furthermore, it’s got good viewing angles and is Widevine L1 certified which means that it’ll be a pleasure consuming media from OTT platforms such as Amazon Prime and Netflix.&nbsp;

It may not have a 90Hz high-refresh-rate display but that isn’t something that has trickled down into the budget segment yet.&nbsp;

Performance and Software: Advantage over Realme and Xiaomi&nbsp;

Sadly though, performance is one area where the Galaxy M21 falters. The Exynos 9611 (coupled with 4GB/6GB of RAM) that powers the smartphone isn’t snappy and lags quite a bit when trying to multitask.&nbsp;

It’ll handle everyday tasks without a problem but when you try to open multiple tabs in Google Chrome while using the camera and listening to some audio, it sure will stutter along. The smartphone also tends to heat up slightly when taking a lot of photos of recording long videos. &nbsp;

Playing games like PUBG, Need For Speed, and others will not work on their highest settings. You’ll have to reduce the in-game graphics so that you can play the games without any lag.&nbsp;

Samsung’s One UI 2.0 is by far the standout Android skin amongst all the budget players, especially Realme’s Reamle UI and Xiaomi’s MIUI. The software is feature-rich and you get consistency across all Samsung smartphones. It’s got a native dark theme that pairs well with the AMOLED screen.&nbsp;

The mono speaker on the smartphone is loud. At loud volumes though, it isn’t as clear and you can hear a little bit off crackling. The earpiece quality is pretty good.&nbsp;

The Galaxy M21 comes with a huge 6,000mAh battery that doesn’t weigh down the smartphone at all. The smartphone lasts almost two days with a good 5-hour plus screen-on-time. The one downside is that the Galaxy M21 takes over two and a half hours to charge from 0 per cent -100 per cent.&nbsp;

The long charge times are negated by the fact that the smartphone can last really long on a single charge.&nbsp;

The Galaxy M21 has a triple-camera setup at the back. It has a 48-megapixel main sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens (123* field of view) and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. On the front is a 20-megapixel sensor for all those selfies one takes on a daily basis.&nbsp;

Over the last few months, Samsung’s budget range of smartphones has gotten better and better in the camera department. &nbsp;

The 48-megapixel main sensor on the Galaxy M21 is excellent. With sufficient lighting, the pixel-binned photos came out great. The colours were vibrant and crisp. The close-ups also offered good depth-of-field. Taking some landscapes and you’ll be impressed with the dynamic range as well. Now it isn’t without its faults. &nbsp;

The ultra-wide sensor comes with a fixed focus and that’s a huge disappointment. Furthermore, a lot of noise is there and some details are lost.&nbsp;

The depth-sensor takes fairly decent shots but some of the in-focus items are sometimes slightly blurred and that’s a disappointment.&nbsp;

The 48-megapixel shots have some major issues. First, the colours looked weaker/faded and if you look at the pixel-binned photos and the 48-megapixel shots side-by-side, you’ll notice a huge colour temperature difference.&nbsp;

Finally, I’ll end on a positive note. Disable all the beautification features (trust me, you don’t want any of them) and you’ll get good, crisp selfies, that you can share on social media and spam all of your friends on WhatsApp.

It’s got a great AMOLED display with HD streaming support, a massive 6,000mAh battery (on par with the M31) and fast biometric unlock - whether with face unlock or with the capacitive fingerprint sensor. It’s a worthy smartphone in today’s market.&nbsp;

At Rs 12,999, one feels that Samsung could have gone a little more aggressively and it a thousand rupees cheaper. That would have definitely given it the edge against the Realme 6 that at just Rs 13,999 offers a faster CPU, a fluid display and faster-wired charging. Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 9 Pro also starts at Rs 13,999 and offers great performance albeit with crippled software experience.&nbsp;

Both the Realme 6 and Redmi Note 9 Pro offer better gaming performance than Samsung’s Galaxy M21.&nbsp;

For those that have brand loyalty, or can’t get a Realme/Xiaomi where they are because of lockdown rules, the Galaxy M21 will do them just fine. If you can stretch your budget to the Galaxy M31, I’d recommend getting that instead but it is a hefty Rs 3,000 more though.&nbsp;
