A Bangladesh court on Wednesday sentenced seven accused&nbsp;to death in the 2016 Dhaka cafe attack case.

Twenty-two civilians, including 18 foreign nationals were killed after gunmen opened fire in Dhaka's upscale Gulshan diplomatic enclave on July 1, 2016. Two police officers died in the encounter before the army commandos killed the terrorists after a siege which lasted for 12 hours.

At least 13 hostages were rescued by police.

The cafe was shut down after the attack and later moved to a different location. The original building was locked down by the owners, only open to mourners on the anniversary of the attack each year. The incident is considered to be one of the deadliest terror attacks in Bangladesh's history.

The attack was later claimed by the Islamic State. Police later said it suspected the involvement of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), an outlawed terrorist group that has pledged allegiance to Islamic State.

Trump said Washington was in the "final throes" of work on a deal that would defuse a 16-month trade war with Beijing, but also underscored Washington's support for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/want-to-work-out-preliminary-trade-deal-with-united-states-not-afraid-of-retaliating-chinese-president-jinping-263827">protesters in Hong Kong</a>, a potential huge sore point with China.

China said it had summoned US&nbsp;Ambassador Terry Branstad on Monday to protest the passage in the US&nbsp;Congress of the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, saying the bill amounted to interference in a Chinese internal matter.

"We're in the final throes of a very important deal, I guess you could say one of the most important deals in trade ever. It's going very well but at the same time we want to see it go well in Hong Kong," Trump told reporters at the White House.

He said had a very good relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and expected him to ensure a positive outcome in the Chinese-ruled city of Hong Kong, where pro-democracy parties won almost 90 per cent of 452 district council seats in Sunday's elections.

White House adviser Kellyanne Conway told Fox News the United States and China were "getting really close" on a "phase one" trade deal. She said Trump wanted to "do this in phases, in interim pieces because it's such a large, historic trade deal."

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, told reporters on Tuesday that he believed the initial deal with China could be done before year-end.

He said China had invited Lighthizer and Mnuchnin to visit Beijing for in-person talks and they were willing to go if they saw "a real chance of getting a final agreement."

Former limited-overs specialist George Bailey will join Australia's selectors' panel after the conclusion of the domestic Big Bash Twenty20 tournament, Cricket Australia (CA) said on Wednesday.

Bailey, 37, replaces former captain Greg Chappell who retired from his Cricket Australia roles as a selector and national talent manager at the end of September.

Bailey will draw the curtain on his playing career with Tasmania state and Big Bash side Hobart Hurricanes in early February to take on the role of selector full-time, CA said in a statement.

He will initially serve as a "National Teams advisor" for Cricket Australia and work closely with head coach Justin Langer and selector Trevor Hohns before joining the selectors' panel in a full-time capacity upon his retirement, CA said.

"I am passionate about the long-term success of the Australian cricket team and advancing the cause of Australian cricket in general," Bailey, who played five tests, 90 one-day internationals and 30 Twenty20 internationals, said.

"I'm confident I can add value to the selection process and that my experience will be complementary to that of Trevor and Justin. I am really excited to be joining them in the coming months."

Bailey is expected to focus on selections for the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/australia-thrash-pakistan-to-win-series-2-0-260863">Australia T20</a> team, with Australia to host the T20 World Cup in less than a year.
