Who was Lahari Pathivada? Indian-American techie found dead in Oklahoma after disappearing mysteriously

After the tsunami of mass layoffs, big tech giants are now hiring lower-paid tech workers from foreign countries. Many of the big Silicon Valley companies like Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, Zoom, Salesforce and Palantir have applied for thousands of H-1B worker visas this year, reported independent investigative journalist Lee Fang, citing a US Department of Labor data.

Ironically, thousands of workers on H-1B visas, including several Indians, have been affected by the layoffs in the United States, leading many to share the news on social media seeking new job opportunities, the report noted. Many laid-off employees have either lost or will soon lose the right to stay in the US.

According to the report, Google filed applications for H-1B visas to hire lower-paid workers from foreign countries just a month after announcing its plan to cut 12,000 jobs worldwide in January. The visas were for roles including software engineers, analytical consultants, and user experience researchers, with some requests aimed at new Google employees to join in August only.

Waymo, a self-driving cars company owned by Google’s parent company, Alphabet also reportedly filed similar H-1B applications to hire engineers.

H-1B visas are used by software engineers and others in the tech industry, which has always been a contentious issue in the immigration debate. Critics say that these visas are used to undercut US citizens and legal permanent residents.

The combat restriction on servicewomen in Australia was eased in 1990 and the country began a five-year plan to induct women in combat positions in 2011, provided they cleared all physical requirements.

In 1985, Norway became the first NATO nation to allow women in combat roles. In 2014, Norway also set up the Hunter Troop, the world’s first all-female special forces training programme.

New Zealand integrated women into the defence forces in 1977 and four years later, in 2001, opened doors for them across all defence units, including infantry, armoury and artillery units.

Canada decided to admit women to combat positions in 1989. In 2001, the ban on women serving aboard submarines was also lifted, allowing women to serve in all occupational positions.

As per the Regional Meteorological Centre, New Delhi, the weather is expected to remain the same till Thursday, May 18 with a partly cloudy sky, drizzle and gusty winds.
Delhi weather update: Deteriorating poor air quality

Due to these unexpected thunderstorms the last week, the air quality in the capital deteriorated and the visibility was reduced to 1000 metres.

As per Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of the IMD's regional forecasting centre, the wind speed was 30-35 kmph in the early hours on May 16; however, it will come down during the day, allowing the dust to settle down. The meteorologists have attributed these dusty conditions to a combination of intense heat in northwest India over the past five days, parched soil due to the absence of rainfall and strong winds that have persisted since midnight, as reported by PTI.

Delhi weather update: Monsoon to be delayed this year

The IMD said recently that the onset of the Southwest monsoon over Kerala is likely to be delayed this year, predicting its arrival on June 4, four days after the normal date predicted on June 1.

"Southwest monsoon normally sets in over Kerala on June 1 with a standard deviation of about 7 days. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has been issuing operational forecasts for the date of monsoon onset over Kerala from 2005 onwards. An indigenously developed state-of-the-art statistical model with a model error of +- 4 days is used for the purpose," IMD stated.

Last year, the monsoon over Kerala arrived early on May 29. The southwest monsoon over the Indian mainland is marked by monsoon onset over Kerala which is also an important indicator characterising the transition from a hot and dry season to a rainy season.

The Supreme Court of India made a remark on Wednesday that may start a new debate over love marriages in India. The Supreme Court asserted that the majority of divorces in the country are the result of love marriages. In the past as well, the court has made many remarks that didn’t go down well with people, especially the young population.

A two-judge bench of BR Gavai and Sanjay Karol was hearing a transfer petition arising out of a matrimonial dispute. The counsel informed the court that the marriage was a love dispute. The counsel informed the court that the marriage was a love marriage.

Justice Gavai remarked, “Most divorces are arising from love marriages only,” Bar & Bench reported.

Earlier this month, the top court said it can exercise its powers under Article 142(1) of the Constitution to grant a divorce on the ground of “irretrievable breakdown" of a marriage, whether it is by mutual consent, or even if one of the parties opposes it.

A five-judge constitution bench headed by Justice SK Kaul said it is obvious that the top court should be fully convinced and satisfied that marriage is “totally unworkable, emotionally dead and beyond salvation" and therefore, dissolution of marriage is the right solution and the only way forward.

The court further said that a marriage that has been irretrievably broken down is to be factually determined and firmly established. In order to do this, several factors are to be considered, such as the period of time the parties had cohabited after marriage, when the parties had last cohabited, and the nature of allegations made by the parties against each other and their family members.

Other factors which are considered during the hearing of divorces cases are:

-orders passed in the legal proceedings from time to time

-cumulative impact on the personal relationship

-how many attempts were made to settle the disputes by the intervention of the court or through mediation

-when the last attempt was made

The top court has the discretion to dissolve a marriage on the ground of “irretrievable breakdown” in the exercise of its plenary power under Article 142 (1) of the Constitution and can grant a divorce by mutual consent while dispensing with the 6-month waiting period mandated under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1995.

In order to make Google accounts more safe and more secure, the company has announced to delete accounts that are being inactive for more than two years. Google announces new guidelines for accounts on its platform on Tuesday to update its inactivity policy. Any Google account that has not been used for at least 2 years will be deleted.

Accounts that have been inactive for an extended period of time are more likely to be compromised. This is because forgotten or unattended accounts often rely on old or re-used passwords that may have been compromised.

“Our internal analysis shows abandoned accounts are at least 10x less likely than the active ones to have 2-step verification set up. Meaning, these are often vulnerable, and once compromised, can be used for anything from identity theft to a vector for unwanted or even malicious content, like spam,” Ruth Krichelli, Vice President, Product Management, said in an official blog post.

Google’s new inactivity policy will start later this year. The company may delete the account and its contents including content within Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Meet, Drive, Calendar), YouTube and Google Photos.

The new policy will only be applicable to personal Google accounts, and will not affect accounts for organisations like schools or businesses.

“This update aligns our policy with industry standards around retention and account deletion and also limits the amount of time Google retains your unused personal information,” Google’s blog read.

Google says that the new plan will be rolled out carefully and gradually, with plenty of notice. Even though the new policy takes effect today, it will not immediately impact users with inactive accounts. As per Google, the earliest deletion of accounts will begin in December 2023.

Deleting of accounts will take place in a phased manner, starting with accounts that were once created and never used again.
