Coconut oil, being an emollient, not only moisturises the lips but also protects the skin of lips by enhancing its barrier function. It is also one of the easily found items in our homes.

Aloe Vera's anti-inflammatory properties and soothing effect make it a great choice for treating chapped lips. You can use either organic aloe vera gel available in the market or can use fresh aloe vera from its leaf.

Honey can help moisturise your lips and protect cracked lips from infection. It also works as a mild exfoliator and can help remove dry, dead skin from your lips. Apply organic honey to your lips using a finger or a cotton swab.

Petroleum jelly seals in water longer than oils and waxes. It’s also inexpensive and easy to find online and in drugstores. It is best to use before bed to moisturise and sooth dry, cracked lips.

Sugar can be used as an exfoliator for chapped lips. Dead skin cells building up on your lips can be removed by gentle exfoliation using a sugar scrub. All you need is one tablespoon of sugar and coconut oil to make the scrub.

Olive oil's anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties promote skin regeneration which helps in healing cracked skin of lips. You can directly apply olive oil on the lips or can use it as cooking oil.

6 Ways to Consume Dry Fruits, as per Ayurveda

Dry fruits have high nutritional value and their consumption in winter is beneficial for health. To reap the maximum benefits, follow these simple ways of consuming dry fruits, as per Ayurveda.

Ayurveda suggests soaking dry fruits overnight to increase their digestibility. Soaking makes them softer and reduces their heaviness, making them easier to digest.

According to Ayurveda, the timing of consuming dry fruits matters. It is advised to consume nuts in the morning or as a mid-morning snack. It is better to avoid consuming them late at night as this may cause digestive problems.

Do not pair dry fruits with dairy products as they can become heavier to digest. Combining nuts with dairy also reduces their nutritional value.

Overeating nuts can cause a few problems. It is best to eat them in moderation as they are calorie-dense. It is better to stick to a small handful (about a quarter cup) per day.

Chewing dry fruits thoroughly is crucial for proper digestion. As per Ayurveda, proper chewing is the first step of digestion as it helps in breaking down the food into smaller parts for better absorption.

Ayurveda emphasises consuming fruits and dry fruits that are in season. This ensures that you are in harmony with nature and receive the maximum benefits.

The silver Goddess Laxmi Mantra Coin is more than just a coin. It is a must-have for Diwali pooja as it represents spiritual prosperity and wealth.

Diwali Pooja is incomplete without the idols of Goddess Laxmi and Lord Ganesha. Every Diwali, a new set of idols is brought into the house as a symbol of new beginnings and positivity.

Panchamrit, made of 5 ingredients - milk, honey, ghee, Ganges water and curd is a must-have for Diwali pooja. Without these items, worshipping Goddess Lakshmi is considered incomplete.

Apart from decoration, fresh flowers are a symbol of sensitive, unadulterated love and devotion to the gods. Lighting an incense stick fills the home with fragrance and positivity.

Aarti diya is customary in every pooja ceremony. It is lit and waved in front of the idols in a circular motion to show regard, respect and light.

In Hindu religion, any offering paid to the gods is done using a special worshipping glass and spoon. They are a must-have in your Diwali pooja as they lend a graceful look to the mandir (temple) in the house.

The rise of what was the most powerful crime family in America for a time began in 1957 when Anastasia was assassinated while sitting in a barber chair at the Park Sheraton Hotel in Manhattan. It was believed that his murder was orchestrated by Carlo Gambino.

No pandas in the US: End of an era

Panda diplomacy, a term used in geopolitical circles, refers to the practice of sending giant pandas from China to other countries as a tool of diplomacy. China had given pandas to several countries as a gift from 1941 to 1984. After a change in policy in 1984, pandas were leased instead of given as gifts.

To the US, China gave its first panda in 1972, when Richard Nixon was the President of the States. It was given as a symbol of Nixon’s effort to resume diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The three beloved giant pandas, namely, Tian Tian, Mei Xiang and Xiao Qi, left Washington DC on Wednesday for their new home in China.

Apart from the National Zoo, zoos in Memphis and San Diego have already returned their pandas to China. The only other pandas left in the country, at Atlanta’s zoo are also set to be returned later this month.

The pandas are being returned to China over a failed contract to retain them further. Usually, the Smithsonian Institution renews its panda contracts in order to keep them. Smithsonian Institution operated the National Zoo in Washington DC. The official said that this year they weren’t able to retain the contract and all attempts failed.

Also, in April last year, a controversy was sparked about a panda called Ya Ya being ill-treated at the Memphis Zoo, which circulated like wildfire on Chinese social media. The zoo authority emphatically denied the allegations. But it was returned after the zoo’s loan agreement ended without renewal. Ya Ya spent 20 years at the Memphis Zoo.

Emotional Resilience is the ability to respond to stressful or unexpected situations and crises. The following traits were listed by California-based author Brad Waters in his two-part blog series - 'Cultivating Resilience for Total Well-Being.'

Resilient people keep their distance from temporary suffering and stress because they know that what they are experiencing in the present does not define them and is different from who they are at their core.

Resilient people attract people of their kind only, whether just for fun or for long-term friendships. They surround themselves with people who are supportive, emotionally available and good listeners.

More than anything, an emotionally resilient person is self-aware and knows what they need, how they react and how they cope in a particular situation. This is why they don't shy away from asking for help when in need.

No matter how unfavourable the situations are, resilient people do not live in delusion and accept their surroundings. They are aware that acceptance is the key to finding the solution in a stressful situation.

A resilient person is not born optimistic but practices patience and believes that he/she will find a way out of a painful or stressful situation. They refuse to accept that they are a victim of their circumstances and instead focus on changing the situation positively.

It is easy to get distracted today by TV, social media, drugs, gossip, smartphones etc. However, a resilient person practices mindfulness. They sit in silence in the moment without judgment or avoidance. They do not succumb to unhealthy distractions.

In the end, one cannot have all the answers all the time. An emotionally resilient person knows that the real strength is not in having it all figured out but sometimes just showing trust in the process.

7 Traits of Emotionally Resilient People

For the past week, Delhi has been suffering from its worst air pollution with air quality index (AQI) hitting as high as 400 and even 999 in some areas. To combat deteriorating air quality in Delhi-NCR, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked Stage III of GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan) on Nov 2.

Stage III of GRAP is operationalised when the AQI stands in the ‘severe’ category from 401-450. Later, when AQI crossed 450-mark, the CAQM invoked an 8-point action plan as per Stage-IV of the GRAP on Monday in the entire Delhi-NCR region.

What is GRAP and when is it imposed?

GRAP is a set of emergency action plans which is implemented in four stages depending upon the severity of the air pollution that is determined by the air quality index (AQI).

In 2016, a Supreme Court ruling in the case of MC Mehta vs Union of India case addressed the air quality in the Delhi-NCR region and ordered the creation of GRAP with different AQI categories from Moderate to Severe.

Following the SC ruling, the Centre decided to set up the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in NCR and adjoining regions. CQAM was set up as a statutory body which works in accordance with other States to develop and carry out plans for the prevention and management of air pollution in Delhi-NCR.

The plan was formally announced in 2017 by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change to keep PM 10 and PM 2.5 concentrations from exceeding the “moderate” national AQI threshold.

Stages in GRAP

The GRAP for Delhi-NCR and neighbouring areas are divided into four stages-

Stage 1- “poor” AQI ranging between 201 and 300

In this stage, the government ensures proper implementation of guidelines on dust mitigation measures and sound environmental management of Construction and Demolition (C&D) wastes.

Stage 2- “very poor” AQI of 301-400

Stage II necessitates a ban on diesel generators, the use of coal or firewood in hotels, restaurants, and open eateries, increased parking fees, and increased bus and metro frequency.

Stage 3- “severe” AQI of 401-450

Under this stage, the government imposes a strict ban on construction and demolition activities, hot mix plants, brick kilns, and stone crushers.

Stage 4- “severe plus” AQI of more than 450

This stage ensures the stopping of trucks in Delhi except for LNG/CNG trucks and those involved in essential services. It also imposes a ban on Delhi-registered diesel-operated Medium Goods Vehicles (MGVs) and Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) and also empowers authorities to take a decision on discontinuing physical classes even for classes VI-IX, class XI and conduct classes in an online mode.

Sam Bahadur: 7 Things to Know About Real-Life Hero Sam Manekshaw

Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, also known as Sam Manekshaw, was the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal for his service as the Chief of Army Staff during the Indo-Pak War of 1971.

Sam Manekshaw was born in a Parsi family and his father Hormusji Manekshaw was a doctor. He wanted to go to London to study medicine, but his father refused. In an act of rebellion, he sat for the entrance examination for enrolment into the Indian Military Academy (IMA) at Dehradun.

Manekshaw cleared it in his first attempt and became part of the first intake of 40 cadets on 1 Oct 1932. He graduated from IMA on 4 Feb 1934 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the British Indian Army (which later became the Indian Army after Independence).

In his military career, Manekshaw fought five wars, beginning with service in the British Indian Army in World War II. He also played a crucial role in the Indo-Pak War of 1947 and the Hyderabad crises of 1948. Manekshaw then led the Indian Army and came out victorious in the Indo-Pak war of 1971.

Manekshaw’s military career spanned four decades, from the British era and World War II to the three wars against Pakistan and China after India’s independence in 1947. He held several regimental, staff and command assignments during his service.

Following the partition of India in 1947, Manekshaw was reassigned to the 8th Gorkha Rifles. Being a beloved of the Gorkhas, he was welcomed by Nepal as an honorary general of their army in 1972. Manekshaw once said, "If a man says he is not afraid of dying, he is either lying or is a Gorkha."

As per one of Manekshaw's interviews, he once visited a battalion of 8 Gorkha Rifles in July 1969. He asked an orderly if he knew the name of his chief. The orderly replied that he did and said "Sam Bahadur". This eventually became Manekshaw's nickname.

A biographical war drama based on field marshal Sam Manekshaw is releasing on 1 Dec 2023. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the movie is starring Vicky Kaushal as Sam Manekshaw. The movie also stars Fatima Sana Sheikh and Sanya Malhotra in pivotal roles.
