The Public Provident Fund scheme is a go-to&nbsp;investment option, especially for the middle class who wish to enjoy its tax benefits and ensure a risk-free corpus after their retirement.&nbsp;

The investment yields decent returns and offers an exemption under income tax section 80(C). With the new changes introduced in the scheme by the Ministry of Finance, investors are now worried about how it will impact their savings and how much interest they will earn now.

In Money-Wise, this time we are trying to decode the new PPF rules and simplify the impact that it may have on some accounts.

<h2>No interest above Rs 1.5 lakhs</h2>

As per the revised regulations, the PPF account holder can invest up to Rs 1.5 lakh every year. Those holding multiple PPF accounts will get interest on investments up to Rs 1.5 lakh across different accounts and any excess amount in other accounts will get zero interest till they are closed. For example, if the total invested money in two accounts is 1.7 lakh, interest will be paid on Rs 1.5 lakh and zero interest will be given on the rest of Rs 20,000.

<h2>No multiple PPF accounts</h2>

Those having more than one PPF account will have to choose one primary account to incur interest. The other accounts will be closed and their invested amount will be refunded without any interest.

<h2>Minor PPF</h2>

In the case of minor PPF accounts, they will be applicable for the Post Office Savings Account (POSA) interest rate, which is 2.5 per cent, till the minor turns 18, after which standard PPF rates of 7.1 per cent will be applicable.

The Post Office will calculate the maturity period from the date the minor turns major and is eligible to open their own regular account.

If guardians of minors have opened multiple PPF accounts, they will have to ensure that the contributions made to each account are within the annual limit.

<h2>NRI PPF account</h2>

NRI with PPF accounts and Form H will be able to retain their accounts until maturity, however, they will get a POSA interest rate only till September 30 and no interest will be incurred in their account from October 1.&nbsp;

This change will have the most impact on Indian nationals who changed their status to NRI after the activation of their PPF accounts.

<h2>Here's what you need to do&nbsp;</h2>

<ul>
	<li>All those with irregularities in their PPF accounts should regularise it as soon as possible to ensure that they do not lose their interest. Especially, those with multiple accounts need to look into it and decide on one account that&nbsp;they will operate in future.</li>
	<li>The capping of the investment limit of Rs 1.5 lakh every year does not appear as a major hurdle because investments in PPF are generally made with the thought of getting exemptions under income tax section 80(C) and the limit of this section is also Rs 1.5 lakh.</li>
	<li>Those who have become NRIs and still have PPF accounts must consider closing their accounts either in five-year intervals or at maturity.</li>
	<li>In the case of minor accounts, those with multiple PPFs need to be careful with investments and the investors must also consider the POSA rates applicable for minors till they turn 18.</li>

An alien-like fungus - called 'Devil's Fingers' - has made a rare appearance in the New Forest, United Kingdom.

The fungus smells "like rotting flesh" and has a ghoulish&nbsp;hand-like appearance which appears to be coming straight out of the grave.

It was discovered by a retired teacher Julia Rosser, as reported by The Daily Mail. The 67-year-old said, "This one looked more like a hand than any I have ever seen before. It looked like it was reaching out from beyond the grave. It looked very creepy."

This fungus is generally found in late October but it has made appearance early because of the wet weather.

"I found Devil's Fingers in roughly the same area last year so I was on the lookout for them. They burst out of the ground with these red tentacles or fingers," said Rosser.

This strange-looking fungus also has other names like "octopus stinkhorn" or "octopus fungus".

<h2>All about Devil's Fingers</h2>

The fungus is native to New Zealand and Australia and is believed to have been carried to France as part of the military supplies during the First World War.

"The species is from the southern hemisphere and was first discovered in Britain in 1914," explained Wildlife Trusts.

According to experts, the fungus gets hatched from an "egg" which is slimy and gelatinous in nature and its tentacle-like arms start protruding as it grows.

It is easy to spot because of its bright red colour, however, it is very rare in the United Kingdom.

"About 5cm high, tentacles can be up to 7cm long. Usually, there are at least 3 or 4 tentacles. Often found amongst leaf litter under trees or in parks and gardens," stated Wildlife Trusts.&nbsp;

"This fungus smells like rotting flesh which attracts insects to arms where the spores are found. The spores are then spread by the visiting insects," they added.

Meta-inspired creepy AI spectacles can find strangers' names and addresses

In an intriguing experiment, scientists have tried to analyse the brains of humans when they see one of the world's most famous paintings - "Girl With The Pearl Earring" which has been painted by Johannes Vermeer.

In the experiment, neuroscientists found that the brain experiences a special neurological phenomenon called "Sustained Attentional Loop" when they see the painting.&nbsp;

The neuroscientists were commissioned by the Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague - which has kept the 17th-century masterpiece - to measure&nbsp;the brain&nbsp;output of the audience.

In the observations, it was found that the eye of the viewer gets automatically drawn towards the eye of the girl, then to her mouth, and then moves on to the pearl and finally goes back to the eye.

Research company Neurensics employee Martin de Munnik said that because of this phenomenon, the observer looks at the painting for a longer duration in comparison to others.&nbsp;

"You have to pay attention whether you want to or not. You have to love her whether you want to or not," Munnik said.

Scientists, while measuring the brainwaves, also found that the precuneus was getting stimulated the most. Precuneus is a part of the brain that manages a human's consciousness and personal identity.

"It was predictable that the Girl was special. But the 'why' was also a surprise to us," De Munnik said.

He added that this is the first study in which EEG and MRI brain scanning machine have been used to measure human's neurological response to artwork.

"The longer you look at somebody, the more beautiful or more attractive somebody becomes. Why are you familiar with this painting and not with the other paintings? Because of this special thing she has," he said.

It was discovered that the viewer's emotional reaction to the original painting was ten times stronger than to its reproduction.

Mauritshuis Director Martine Gosselink said that this experiment showed how important it is for people to see the original painting.

"It's so important to engage with art, whether it's photography, or dance, or old masters from the 17th century," said the director, while speaking to AFP in an interview.

Scientists have stumbled upon a strange megastructure deep inside the Pacific Ocean near Easter Island, which may be the reason behind the East Pacific Rise - which is the fastest spreading ocean ridge in the world.

As per the researchers, the ancient ocean slabs are present at this site, which is hidden deep in the interior of the planet.

University of Maryland geologist Jingchuan Wang&nbsp;and his team have made this discovery with the help of seismic data, as reported by Science Alert.

The scientists sent bouncing sound waves deep inside the ground to form seismic maps and identified an odd blob of the mantle that has been slowly moving beneath the Nazca Plate that borders South America's continental plate.&nbsp;

The mantle makes up most of the volume of Earth, which is made up of heated silicate rocks that are sandwiched between a cool, thin outer crust and the core.

Across tens of millions of years, this layer has been flowing in cycles because of the extreme difference in temperature across the opposite edges. The cooler and denser material is getting drawn into the warmer interior.

The process is known as subduction, and the Nazca Plate is going through subduction currently beneath South America, which recycles the surface material back into the mantle.

Scientists said that there is an ocean ridge on the other side of that plate beneath Easter Island, which is growing rapidly and a mysterious structural gap has been created between the central and eastern Pacific.

"Our discovery opens up new questions about how the deep Earth influences what we see on the surface across vast distances and timescales," Wang said.

"We found that in this region, the material was sinking at about half the speed we expected, which suggests the mantle transition zone can act like a barrier and slow down the movement of material through the Earth," he added.

A marvellous megastructure is sitting deep inside the Pacific. Scientists say it is...

The mysterious structure of Earth and its mantle has kept scientists hooked, and they keep studying it to make new discoveries every day.&nbsp;

The geography of Earth already felt different from what was taught to many of us in schools when scientists discovered a missing continent under the crust of the Earth, 375 years after it went missing.

Now, scientists have stumbled upon a massive ocean which remained hidden under the crust of Earth for all these years. The ocean consists of water stored in a crystal structure of the ringwoodite rock.&nbsp;

<h2>How did the ocean form under Earth's crust?</h2>

According to scientists, a rock - called 'ringwoodite' - was present 400 miles underground and had a huge supply of water which got stored in it.

Earlier, scientists found that the water was stored in a mantle rock, which was a sponge-like state, that is not solid, liquid, or gas but a fourth state.

Also Read:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/huge-water-presence-three-times-greater-than-oceans-of-earth-found-in-space-762993">Huge water presence, three times greater than oceans of Earth, found in space</a>

The findings were published in a scientific&nbsp;paper&nbsp;titled "Dehydration melting at the top of the lower mantle" in 2014.

"The ringwoodite is like a sponge, soaking up water, there is something very special about the crystal structure of ringwoodite that allows it to attract hydrogen and trap water," stated geophysicist Steve Jacobsen, who was part of the team of scientists.

"This mineral can contain a lot of water under conditions of the deep mantle. I think we are finally seeing evidence for a whole Earth water cycle, which may help explain the vast amount of liquid water on the surface of our habitable planet. Scientists have been looking for this missing deep water for decades," he added.

The discovery was made by scientists after studying earthquakes and finding that seismometers were detecting under the surface of the Earth.

Through the findings, scientists were able to ascertain that the water was present within the rock known as ringwoodite.

The presence of just 1 per cent of water in the ringwoodite rock meant that three times more water was present under the Earth's surface than is present in the five oceans on the surface.

Along with the ocean, the researchers&nbsp;made another significant discovery&nbsp;of an entirely new ecosystem when they checked the volcanic crust using an underwater robot.

The high-energy burst of radio waves, which recently made headlines for travelling for eight billion years in space before reaching&nbsp;Earth, had a "weird" place of origin, which scientists have now identified.

The radio wave, which is called a fast radio burst (FRB), was one of those hundreds of fleeting blasts of energy which have been detected by scientists across the years.

When it was detected, some astronomers made a wild guess that it could be a signal sent by alien life to our planet.

<h2>Here's what scientists found about the origin of radio waves</h2>

Scientists, while studying the FRB, found that it had originated from a cluster of galaxies which were present in the universe when it was only five billion years old.

The FRB, which has been dubbed as FRB 20220610A, was discovered as the most farthest and powerful signal ever detected by astronomers.

It has now been found that the home of radio signals are seven tightly packed galaxies, as reported by The Daily Mail.

"None have ever been seen in such a compact group," stated astronomer Yuxin (Vic) Dong, who was part of the team at Northwestern University which studied the origin of FRB 20220610A.&nbsp;"Its birthplace is truly rare," Dong said.

The head of the team of scientists at&nbsp;Northwestern, Alexa Gordon said, "It's these types of environments, these weird ones, that are driving us toward better understanding the mystery of FRBs."

These flashes of light, which appeared as the radio band of the electromagnetic spectrum, were most likely temporary and appeared randomly from space, as per scientists.

Astronomer Wen-fai Dong, who looked into FRB 20220610A, stated that in the new Hubble images, these galaxies appeared in oblong shapes or 'tidal tales' which suggested that they may have had collisions through which fast radio burst may have birthed.

"Without the Hubble's imaging, it would still remain a mystery as to whether this FRB originated from one monolithic galaxy or from some type of interacting system," said Gordon, in a&nbsp;NASA statement.

Northwestern astronomer&nbsp;Wen-fai Fong, who was also part of the project, also confirmed the oblong shapes or 'tidal tales' of some of the seven galaxies which hinted at the chances of collisions.

"There are some signs that the group members are 'interacting. In other words, they could be trading materials or possibly on a path to merging," Fong said.

In another tragic case of work pressure, Bajaj Finance's 42-year-old area manager died by suicide in Jhansi city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.&nbsp;

The man, identified as Tarun Saxena, left a suicide note in which he clearly mentioned the work pressure he faced from his seniors in the past two months because of his targets and how he was threatened with salary deductions, according to reports.

The house help found the man's dead body in the morning on Monday (Sep 30). The man had allegedly locked his wife and two children in a room and then took the drastic step.

<h2>Here's what the Bajaj employee said in his suicide letter</h2>

In the five-page suicide letter, Tarun said that he was facing immense pressure at work because he was not being able to meet the targets.

The man was given the task of collecting EMIs of Bajaj Finance loans but was not able to meet the targets because of several issues.

He was also afraid that he might get fired from his job. He said that he was also repeatedly humiliated by his seniors.

"I am very tense about the future. I have lost my ability to think. I am going," Tarun said. The employee alleged that the company was making them pay the EMIs, which they failed to recover.

"I have not slept for 45 days. I have hardly eaten. I am under a lot of stress. Senior managers are pressuring me to meet targets at any cost or quit," said Tarun.

He further informed the family that he had paid the school fees of the children till year-end and apologised&nbsp;for his actions.

"You all take care of Megha, Yatharth and Pihu. Mummy, Papa, I have never asked for anything, but am doing so now. Please get the second floor built so that my family can stay comfortably," he said in the suicide letter.

The employee also named his seniors in the suicide letter and appealed to his family to file a police complaint against them. "They are responsible for my decision," the employee said.

<h2>Police say&nbsp;'will take action if family files complaint'</h2>

As per reports, Senior police officer Vinod Kumar Gautam said, "The suicide note says his seniors were pressuring him over the targets. If we get a complaint from the family, we will take action."

The death of the Bajaj&nbsp;employee comes at a time when the death of 26-year-old chartered accountant Anna Sebastian Perayil because of work pressure has sparked a nationwide debate.
