Saudi Arabia is demanding security guarantees and help in the development of its civilian nuclear programme from the United States, as the latter is trying to broker its peace deal with Israel, according to a report published by The Wall Street Journal.

Reaching a normalisation deal between Saudi Arabia and Israel has become a priority for Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and United States President Joe Biden as chances of confrontation with Iran, over its military aid to Russia amid the Ukraine war and the nuclear programme, remain high.

The reports stated the deep involvement of the Biden administration in the complex negotiations, adding that any deal would reshape the political landscape of the Middle East.

The demands made by Saudi Arabia for nuclear aid and security guarantees stand as daunting obstacles amid the deal, as the measures are likely to be opposed by some Washington lawmakers.

Riyadh is cautious about striking a deal that is likely to come under fire in the Arab world and aggravate tensions with Iran.

Former U.S. ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro, who is a distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council and now works towards strengthening Israel-Arab world ties, said that the potential deal is “a very tough Gordian knot to cut.”

“Normalisation between Israel and Saudi Arabia, facilitated by the United States, is in all three parties’ interests,” he stated. “But that doesn’t mean it’s easy to arrange,” Shapiro added.

However, US, Saudi and Israeli officials said that there is the possibility for the deal to happen. Netanyahu is aiming to build Israeli ties to the Arab world which expanded in 2020 with the Abraham Accords.

Multiple explosions were heard when police officers in tactical gear stormed inside the pharmacy in the city centre after they first arrived on the scene at around 4:30 p.m.

Police "were able to arrest the suspected perpetrator and also free the hostages,” said Karlsruhe police spokesman, Dennis Krull.

“It is very good that there were no injuries, neither on the part of the hostages, nor on the part of the emergency forces or the perpetrator,” he added.

A man, with his head covered in a blanket, was brought out of the pharmacy by the police officers and bundled into a car.

They stated that the police searched the building and no one was found injured. The incident took place a day after the deadly shooting rampage at a Jehovah's Witnesses hall in Hamburg.

Police enter Karlsruhe pharmacy, arrest hostage-taker in Germany

Women will soon be granted permission to swim topless in public pools in Berlin in accordance with a ruling of the city's authorities.

The step has been taken after a woman took legal action after being thrown out of an open-air pool because of sunbathing topless.

The complainant, whose identity was not revealed by the authorities, reached the senate’s ombudsperson’s office where she demanded equal treatment and argued that women must be allowed to go topless if they choose to do so.

The authorities accepted that the victims have faced discrimination and said that all visitors to the pools of Berlin are now free to go topless, irrespective of their gender.

As a result of the complaint, the Berliner Baederbetriebe, which has been running the public pools of Berlin, made changes in its clothing rules accordingly.

“The ombudsperson’s office very much welcomes the decision of the Baederbetriebe, because it establishes equal rights for all Berliners, whether male, female or non-binary, and because it also creates legal certainty for the staff at the Baederbetriebe,“ Doris Liebscher, the head of the ombudsperson's office, said

“Now it is important that the regulation is applied consistently and that no more expulsions or house bans are issued,” Liebscher added.

The outcome is likely to be received as a piece of good news by those who follow Germany’s freikörperkultur, or “free body culture”.

In 2022, various cities of the country brought the concept of topless swimming in public pools, including Gottingen in Lower Saxony and Siegen in North Rhine-Westphalia.

UK: 'Eerily cool' cloud illuminated by worm moon leaves skywatchers thrilled

The gunman who went on a shooting rampage in Hamburg, Germany, killing seven people and injuring several others before turning the gun on himself, was visited by the police weeks before after they received a tip-off which raised concerns about the man's mental health.

The police said that the man co-operated with them and that they did not have enough grounds to seize the gun at the time. The 35-year-old suspected gunman, Philipp F, had been issued a licence to own a gun for sporting purposes.

Seven people, which included an unborn baby, were killed by the gunman in the attack which took place at a Jehovah's Witness meeting hall in the city.

The first emergency call was received at 21:04 local time (20:04 GMT) to report that gunshots were fired and the police officers reached the site four minutes later.

A video later appeared in which the gunman was seen firing through a window. He then entered the building where many people had gathered and fired nine magazines of ammunition before he apparently turned the gun on himself.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that there can be a rise in the death toll. German Senator Andy Grote said that many lives were saved by police officers' "fast and decisive actions". He added that the attack was the "worst crime" in the recent history of Hamburg.

Hamburg Police Chief Ralf Martin Meyer on Friday said that the police officers had visited the man in February after an anonymous letter was sent to them claiming that he "bore particular anger toward religious believers, in particular toward Jehovah's Witnesses".

The letter also stated that he "might be suffering from a mental illness, although it had not been medically diagnosed".

Police stated that the man was co-operative and held an open conversation with the officers. "The bottom line is that an anonymous tip in which someone says they're worried a person might have a psychological illness, isn't in itself a basis for (such) measures," said Chief Meyer.

The police said that the man co-operated with them and that they did not have enough grounds to seize the gun at the time. The 35-year-old suspected gunman, Philipp F, had been issued a licence to own a gun for sporting purposes. A new law is being prepared by the government which will have tighter curbs on ownership of the gun, said the interior minister. Hamburg shooting: Police were tipped off about gunman’s mental health weeks before attack

The WhatsApp messages shared between Italian politicians and senior health officials when the coronavirus pandemic had just started indicate how they tried to protect the image of the country while appearing to joke about the role of Italy in the spread of the virus in the continent. Italy was the first one to be hit hard by Covid-19 in Europe.

The messages have emerged as the basis of which the prosecutors placed former prime minister Giuseppe Conte, former health minister Roberto Speranza along with 17 other officials under investigation under suspicion of having a role to play in “aggravated culpable epidemic” and manslaughter in relation to the response of the government at the beginning of the pandemic.

Italy emerged as the first European country which was engulfed by the coronavirus outbreak after the first locally transmitted case was confirmed in Codogno, southern Lombardy, on February 21, 2020.

In a WhatsApp message which was written on March 5, 2020, Speranza said that “we must exploit” a report which claimed that the first coronavirus case in Europe was detected in Germany. The minister was planning to take the step to protect Italy’s image.

Giuseppe Ruocco, who was the health ministry's secretary general at the time and is being investigated, next day mocked the coronavirus cases detected among travellers returning from Italy in Europe.

An asteroid, which is estimated to be as big as an Olympic swimming pool, may crash into Earth on Valentine’s Day in 2046, NASA scientists have predicted. There is one in 625 chance that the asteroid, which has been named 2023 DW, may hit the Earth on February 14, 2046, the European Space Agency stated.

The asteroid, which has a 50-metre diameter, has been placed by NASA at the number one spot on the “Risk List” of the objects present in space that have more than zero probability of impacting the Earth.

2023 DW stands as the only asteroid present on the list which has a score of 1 on the Torino scale, which is used to measure the chances of the space object impacting the Earth. All other objects have 0 ratings.

Level 1 is indicative of the fact that the chances of an asteroid colliding with the earth are “extremely unlikely with no cause for public attention or public concern,” the Centre for Near Earth Object Studies stated.

“New telescopic observations very likely will lead to re-assignment to Level 0,” it added.
