Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Sunday said that the conservative Supreme Court is “creeping dangerously towards authoritarianism”, as she again raised the scenario of impeaching justices for recent actions.

The congresswoman's comments came just days after the highest court of the country gave some incendiary and far-reaching rulings which struck down affirmative action in Joe Biden’s student loan relief programme, LBGTQ+ rights and college admissions.

“These are the types of rulings that signal a dangerous creep towards authoritarianism and centralisation of power in the court,” she said while speaking at CNN’s State of the Union. “In fact, we have members of the court themselves, with Justice Elena Kagan, saying that the court is beginning to assume the power of a legislature right now,” the congresswoman added.

“They are expanding their role into acting as though they are Congress itself. And that, I believe, is an expansion of power that we really must be focusing on, the danger of this court and the abuse of power,” Ocasio-Cortez stated.

Alito has been facing accusations of receiving gifts from a right-wing billionaire and not disclosing them. As per reports, the billionaire had lobbied for the court to end the loan relief programme of Biden. Thomas has been alleged to have taken undeclared gifts and getting involved in other alleged transgressions, which prompted an ethics watchdog to appeal to him to resign.
“We must pass much more binding and stringent ethics guidelines, where we see members of the supreme court potentially breaking the law,” AOC stated.

The first supermoon of 2023 which will be seen in July will appear brighter in the night sky compared to any other full moon that has been witnessed this year.

According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the full moon will be seen in the sky on Monday (July 3) and it will reach its illumination below the horizon at 7:39 am ET. Depending on the local weather conditions, the citizens of the United States can view the celestial event by gazing in the southeast after the sun sets.
Supermoon to be 14,000 miles closer to Earth in July compared to full moon

The oldest national newspaper in the world printed its last daily edition after running for around 320 years, marking the end of an era.

Vienna-based daily newspaper, Wiener Zeitung, won't be able to print daily editions after a recent change in the law gave it the label of a print product which is not profitable.

The law, which the coalition government in Austria brought in April, stopped the legal requirement for companies to pay money for publishing public announcements in the newspaper's print edition, terminating the role of Wiener Zeitung as an official gazette.

This change in law led to the publisher's loss of income by around €18 million (approx. $19 million), as per Der Spiegel, and forced the paper to cut down its editorial staff from 55 to 20, and lay off 63 people overall.

Online media to survive

The company will continue publishing online and is aiming at distributing a monthly print edition. However, the plan for the monthly edition is still in development.

The newspaper, which the Austrian government owns but remains editorially independent, started publishing in August 1703 and has witnessed 12 presidents, 10 kaisers and two republics. In the newspaper's first edition, it had claimed that it will provide a straightforward account of the news “without any oratory or poetic gloss”.

In 1768, the newspaper reported about a concert which starred an “especially talented” 12-year-old. The boy's name was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

When Austria faced defeat in the first world war, a special edition was published in the paper which featured the last Habsburg emperor Kaiser Karl's abdication letter.

An era comes to an end

In the last daily print edition published on Friday, the newspaper featured an editorial which blamed the new law of the government for the end of its print run. The newspaper stated, “These are stormy times for quality journalism … On more and more platforms, serious content vies for attention with fake news, cat videos and conspiracy theories.”

In April, the newspaper's circulation was just 20,000 on weekdays, although the figure doubled on weekends. Among the list of its final interviewees were Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Austrian chancellors Franz Vranitzky and Wolfgang Schüssel.

EU Commission vice-president Věra Jourova, speaking to the Austrian news agency APA, said that she was “not happy with the situation” at the newspaper. “I think the Wiener Zeitung played a good role in informing people over the years,” she added.

In its three centuries of printing, the newspaper had to shut down only once when Austria was incorporated into Hitler’s Germany and the Nazis closed the paper in 1939. The newspaper began printing again in 1945 while Austria was still under Allied occupation.

This change in law led to the publisher's loss of income by around €18 million (approx. $19 million), as per Der Spiegel, and forced the paper to cut down its editorial staff from 55 to 20, and lay off 63 people overall. WATCH | Fortress-led group set to buy Vice Media An era comes to an end In the last daily print edition published on Friday, the newspaper featured an editorial which blamed the new law of the government for the end of its print run. The newspaper stated, “These are stormy times for quality journalism … On more and more platforms, serious content vies for attention with fake news, cat videos and conspiracy theories.” In April, the newspaper's circulation was just 20,000 on weekdays, although the figure doubled on weekends. You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
The government of South Korea, to decrease the pressure on the students who get scouted by elite private preschools only to go through the rigorous eight-hour national college entrance exam which is known as Suneung and win a seat in a prestigious university, has dropped some “killer questions” from the latter.

The step has been taken by the government with the aim of making college entrance exams easier for students. The so-called “killer questions” have been removed by the officials from the Suneung, which is also called the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), said Education Minister Lee Ju-ho in a press briefing.
South Korea drops ‘killer questions’ from 8-hour gruelling college entrance exam

The image of a mysterious doughnut-shaped rock was captured on the surface of the red planet by the Mars rover Perseverance. The Perseverance rover, which was launched in July 2020, has been exploring the 28-mile-wide (45-kilometre-wide) Jezero Crater of the planet and looking for ancient microbial life's signs, as per NASA.

Samples of broken rock and soil (called regolith) and rock are being collected by the rover which are likely to be sent back to Earth to be used in future missions to Mars.

The “doughnut” present on the surface of Mars is one of the latest objects which was captured about 100 metres (roughly 328 feet) away in the Jezero Crater's delta by the SuperCam Remote Micro-Imager, which is one of the cameras of the rover and is helping scientists understand the surface of the planet.

However, the image has left the netizens baffled, with some making bizarre guesses of it being an 'alien toilet' or 'some kind of egg'. However, experts have been trying to give a more reasonable explanation for the “doughnut”, stating that it is most probably a meteorite that fell on Mars from the sky.

The explanation of SETI appears fairly plausible to experts as rovers regularly spot meteorites on Mars. Jim Rice, an assistant research scientist in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University, said, “I can’t say with absolute, 100% certainty it’s not a meteorite, but I think it’s highly unlikely. The reason I say that is because, this region we’re in, we see a lot of rocks that have these kind of hollowed-out interiors.”

SETI Institute's senior planetary scientist Pascal Lee said that he believes the rock could be a meteorite. Smaller rocks or fragments surrounded the rock, “so maybe (it’s) a meteorite that broke up upon landing,” Lee stated. “In this case, the doughnut shape could have been created by weaker materials in the rock eroding upon entering Mars’ atmosphere,” he said.

It is also likely that the rock was “thrown away from another part of Mars by the impact of a large asteroid. It’s called an ejecta block. … I would recommend that Perseverance divert from its current course to check it out,” Lee stated.

The efforts of Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the Wagner group's coup may have made it easier for him to be prosecuted by an international court and the Russian state for war crimes which were committed by the mercenary fighters, stated the experts in international law.

After the mutiny headed by Yevgeny Prigozhin, Putin stated that the mercenaries had been “fully funded” by the government authorities in Russia. More than 86 billion roubles were paid to Wagner fighters in 2023 till the month of May, he stated.

“Those words potentially have very significant consequences in terms of exposing the Russian state to responsibility for the acts of Wagner, and Putin, personally and individually as the leader of the Russian state,” stated Philippe Sands KC, professor of law at UCL and the author of East West Street, while speaking to The Observer.

The website of the White House has published a research document stating that the Biden administration is looking towards studying how the sunlight can be blocked to save the planet from the crisis of climate change.

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy released a congressionally mandated report which showed that the designated team has been researching "geoengineering" methods to stop the sun's rays from accelerating global warming.

As noted by the University of Oxford in its entry on the subject, "geoengineering" is "the deliberate large-scale intervention in the Earth’s natural systems to counteract climate change".

As per the report titled "Congressionally-Mandated Report on Solar Radiation Modification", the various kinds of geoengineering methods that the Biden administration is looking into are "stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) and marine cloud brightening." Additionally, the paper states that there is ongoing research in "cirrus cloud thinning".

Geoengineering - the way forward?

The report's introduction indicates that the research into "space-based approaches" has not been taking place as "geoengineering" is comparatively easy to implement.

"The focus on atmospheric approaches also follows from their greater near-term feasibility relative to space-based approaches,” stated the document. No government policy is attached to the document as of yet as it is just a research document.

"This Research Plan focuses on improving understanding of the potential impacts of SRM, rather than on technologies needed for deployment. Much of this research would contribute to our ability to understand basic climate processes and effects of human greenhouse gas emissions, as well as outcomes of SRM,” the document read.

"A programme of research into the scientific and societal implications of solar radiation modification (SRM) would enable better-informed decisions about the potential risks and benefits of SRM as a component of climate policy,” the summary continued.

The document did accept that the research could pave the way for corporate projects or a future government in this field. "Such a research programme would also help to prepare the United States for possible deployment of SRM by other public or private actors,” it stated.

"SRM offers the possibility of cooling the planet significantly on a timescale of a few years,” it stated. The White House, in a separate statement, assured readers that "there are no plans underway to establish a comprehensive research programme focused on solar radiation modification."
