In a new study, it has been found that Spain has remained prone to rare and deep earthquakes because of a capsized tectonic plate beneath the Earth's surface.&nbsp;

As per the seismographic reports, when Africa and Eurasia slowly collided, a piece of the surface of the planet went upside down deep beneath the Mediterranean.&nbsp;

"Since 1954, there have been five closely located large deep‐focus earthquakes with depths greater than 600 kilometres beneath [the Spanish city of] Granada," said geologists Daoyuan Sun from the University of Science and Technology of China as well as Meghan Miller from Australian National University, in a statement.&nbsp;

<h2>Here's what experts found after examining Spain's 2010 earthquake</h2>

Generally, earthquakes which occur at such deep depths are&nbsp;followed by major aftershocks. However, when seismic data collected from Spain's 2010 earthquake was examined by Sun and Miller, there were no aftershocks found.

When the tectonic plates underneath the surface of the Earth get pushed into each other, they are generally displaced so that one slides beneath the other in a process which is called subduction.&nbsp;

These collisions sometimes destroy the plate's sinking part and raise the crust which creates mountains and interlocks the two plates.

At other times, the wrestling crusts remain separate but stacked as one slab slowly sinks further towards the mantle of Earth.

This is what took place at the border between the African and Eurasian plates where the Mediterranean floor is slowly sinking beneath Europe.

During the 2010 Granada earthquake, the seismic waves lasted unusually long and had an extra phase of activity. This happened because the seismic waves were moving slower and that too at the bottom of the Alboran slab and not the top.

"A significant amount of water has been carried down to the mantle transition zone, indicating a relatively cold slab," said geologists Daoyuan Sun.

"Considering a relatively young seafloor age in the western Mediterranean, for the slab to remain cool, the subduction speed must be quite fast, such as a moderate speed of about 70 millimetres per year," he explained.

Archaeologists made a major discovery amid the ruins of the Roman city of Pompeii as they discovered a fresco painting which depicted the Greek mythological siblings Phrixus and Helle.

Pompeii Archaeological Park's director Gabriel Zuchtriegel described the find as a major reflection of history.

“History has repeated itself,” Zuchtriegel said, as he made an announcement regarding the excavation and restoration work.

They are two refugees at sea, a brother and sister, forced to flee because their stepmother wants rid of them and she does so with deception and corruption. She [Helle] fell into the water and drowned," he said.

Exquisite artistry and vibrant colours dominate the fresco which depicts Helle on the verge of drowning and her face appears obscured by waves as she extends her hand to her brother.

Zuchtriegel optimistically spoke about giving access to these preserved homes to the public in the near future, as the highlighted the latest find's cultural and historical significance.

United States President Joe Biden on Friday (Mar 1) said that the country will start airdropping food and supplies as part of humanitarian aid into Gaza in the days ahead.

Speaking with Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in an Oval Office meeting, he called the killing of more than 100 people in Gaza a "tragic and alarming event".

On Thursday (Feb 29), a huge crowd of people in North Gaza rushed towards food aid trucks after which&nbsp;the Israeli forces guarding those trucks opened fire at them.

"The loss of life is heartbreaking. People are so desperate that innocent people got caught in a terrible war unable to feed their families, and you saw the response when they tried to get aid in," Biden said.&nbsp;

He added, "And we need to do more in the United States, will do more. In the coming days, we’re going to join with our friends in Jordan and others in providing airdrops."&nbsp;

"In addition to expanding deliveries by land, as I said, we're gonna -- we're gonna insist that Israel facilitate more trucks and more routes to get more and more people the help they need. No excuses because the truth is, aid flowing to Gaza is nowhere nearly enough," the US president further said.&nbsp;

"Now, it's nowhere nearly enough. Innocent lives are on the line, and children's lives on the line and we won't stand by and let -- until they -- until we get more aid in there. We should be getting hundreds of trucks in, not just several. I won't stand by and we won’t let up," he added.

<h2>White House confirms planning to be robust, additional air drops to be planned</h2>

At a media briefing, White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby said, "There's few military operations that are more complicated than humanitarian assistance air drops. This is----this is a tough military mission to do because so many parameters have to be exactly right. We're going to pursue this the way we would pursue any such operation -- carefully."

He added that the planning will be robust. "I know that we will learn from the first airdrops, and this will be a part of a sustained effort. This isn't going to be one and done," Kirby added.

"There will be additional airdrops planned and executed. And with each one, I think we'll learn more and we'll get -- we'll get better at them. It's very difficult. It is extremely difficult to do an airdrop in such a crowded environment as is Gaza. Very, very densely populated. A lot of people confined to small spaces. So, you want to do it in a way that you can get it to close -- as close as you can to the people in need, but not in a way that puts them in any danger. And so, the Pentagon will be doing a raft of planning on this," he further said.&nbsp;

Kirby also added that first airdrops will involve pallets of MREs -- Meals Ready to Eat -- and that the country has been working alongside international aid organisations on distribution.

"I can tell you that this first one coming in -- in a few days, will not be the last one. It will be part of a larger, longer, sustained effort to increase the flow of humanitarian assistance," he said.

There was a time when humans had tails, but thanks to evolution, certain changes ensured that the tail vanished. Nearly 25 million years ago, the tails of human beings disappeared. Scientists have now found out what exactly happened that led to this change during the evolution process. The secret behind the disappearance of the tail was discovered by researchers from New York University Langone Health. They identified a single snippet of DNA, which is commonly found in apes and humans but has been missing from monkeys. The new study was published in the prestigious journal Nature. "Our study begins to explain how evolution removed our tails, a question that has intrigued me since I was young," said lead study author Bo Xia. Also Read: A silent warning? Microplastics found in every human placenta, reveals new study The answer is present in the gene TBXT which is present in the tail length in certain animals. As per the study, the gene was not found in humans, not due to mutation but because another genetic code "snippet" known as AluY was randomly inserted inside non-tailed apes and early humans during prehistoric times, as per the study. How the gene affected tail length? The new gene was observed to affect tail lengths. When it was paired with TBXT, the new gene created two types of ribonucleic acid, which are important for cellular structure and led to the disappearance of tails in people and apes. "This finding is remarkable because most human introns carry copies of repetitive, jumping DNAs without any effect on gene expression, but this particular AluY insertion did something as obvious as determine tail length," said Dr Jef Boeke, the Sol and Judith Bergstein Director of the Institute for Systems Genetics, as reported by the New York Post. AluY snippets are also known as "jumping genes" or "mobile elements" since they are able to move around and insert themselves repeatedly and in random order in human code. Watch: Study: Apes like to tease their friends The scientists used mice to test their theory and inserted AluY into 63 of them. It was found by the researchers that the tails of offspring were either completely missing or had shortened. These experiments proved that tail loss may also coincide with an increase in neural tube defects which can cause diseases like spina bifida in people. In this disease, the spine does not properly align with the spinal cord. "Future experiments will test the theory that in an ancient evolutionary trade-off, the loss of a tail in humans contributed to the neural tube birth defects," study author Dr Itai Yanai said. In a dramatic moment, as the 2024 presidential campaign gathers steam, both current United States President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump visited the southern border on Thursday (Feb 29).&nbsp;

The two presidential election candidates visited the border to address the issue which has for decades confounded the administrations of both parties - immigration.

Moments after Trump started speaking in Eagle Pass, Biden got a briefing regarding the issue from the border officials.&nbsp;

Later, Biden thanked border agents and stated that he would get them more resources “come hell or high water".

“It’s long past time to act,” he claimed, further stating that border control “desperately” needs more resources.

Making a direct appeal to Trump, Biden asked him to jointly appeal the Congress to pass the bill, which was tanked after it was opposed by Trump and his allies.

"I understand my predecessor is in Eagle Pass today. What I would say to Mr Trump, instead of playing policy with this issue, instead of telling members of Congress to block this legislation, join me or I'll join you in telling the Congress to pass this bipartisan border security bill," Biden said.&nbsp;

"We can do it together, you know, and I know it's the toughest, most efficient, most effective border security bill this country's ever seen. So, instead of playing politics with the issue, why don't we just get together and get it done," he added.

Biden said that the bipartisan border bill is “a win for the American people,” and called it a “truly bipartisan initiative".

He appealed to the Senate to reconsider the bill and asked senators to “set politics aside”. &nbsp;

Biden claimed that it's "long past time to act," adding that House Speaker Mike Johnson "needs to put this bill on the floor".

"The majority of Democrats and Republicans in both houses support this legislation, until someone came along and said, don't do that, it'll benefit the incumbent," said Biden. "That's a hell of a way to do business in America for such a serious problem. We need to act," he added.&nbsp;

Hitting back at Biden's appeal, Trump's national press secretary Karoline Leavitt, in a statement, said, "Instead of shifting the blame on everyone but himself, Joe Biden should take responsibility for the border crisis, deaths, and destruction that his policies have caused, say Laken Riley’s name, and use his executive power to shut the border down today."

Trump, in his remarks, said that the death of 22-year-old Riley, a graduate nursing student who was killed while she was jogging near the University of Georgia this month, was “barbaric”.&nbsp;
