6 Side-Effects Of Protein Supplements You Must Be Aware Of

Protein supplements are quite widely consumed by people for health reasons. However, not many know they have various side effects ranging from digestive issues to nutrition deficiencies.

Consumption of protein supplements can lead to digestive issues like stomach cramps, gas and bloating.

Intake of protein in high amounts can cause dehydration since the body requires more water to process protein.

High amounts of protein supplements can also damage the kidneys. However, this may occur in people who already have kidney problems.

Protein supplements can also increase the risk of bone loss and osteoporosis by increasing urinary calcium excretion which results in negative calcium balance.

Although protein supplements help in building muscle mass, they also lead to weight gain if consumed in excess.

Protein supplements may not contain other essential nutrients like vitamins and minerals and can cause deficiencies.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday (May 9) sacked the head of his country's State Security Administration (UDO). The step was taken days after Kyiv officials said that a Russian plot aimed at assassinating Zelensky was foiled.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday (May 9) sacked the head of his country's State Security Administration (UDO). The step was taken days after Kyiv officials said that a Russian plot aimed at assassinating Zelensky was foiled. As per a presidential decree which was published by the office of Zelensky, Serhii Rud was removed from his position as director of the UDO, which is the unit that is in charge of the security of Zelensky as well as other high-ranking officials. The decree did not specify why the government decided to fire Rud and Zelensky's office failed to announce his replacement. The decision came after the Security Service of Ukraine's (SBU) announcement on Tuesday (May 7) which stated that he had intercepted a plan, headed by agents at Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), to assassinate Zelensky along with several other senior Kyiv officials. Also Read: Russia says US is interfering in India's domestic affairs and general election: 'Unfounded accusations' In the wake of the foiled assassination attempt, Ukraine detained two colonels. The SBU, in a post to Telegram, said the plot included "individuals among the military close to [Zelensky]'s security who could take the head of state hostage and later kill him." As per reports, one of the two colonels had allegedly provided rocket rounds, anti-personnel mines and drones to an agent for the attacks. Rud, 47, headed the department which looked into the personal security of the president as well as other senior officials and their families from 2019. Zelensky's tryst with multiple foiled assassination plots In an interview with The Sun in November, Zelensky said that he had lost track of the multiple assassination attempts made by Moscow officials since the Russia-Ukraine war began in February 2022. The officials in Russia have refuted allegations of plotting to kill Zelensky. As per Kyiv's security service, the latest plot involved watching Ukrainian officials "under guard" of the UDO "pass information to the enemy." Watch: Russia-Ukraine war: Ukraine shelling kills 2 in Russian border villages The SBU stated that the FSB would then coordinate regarding the location of the Ukrainian officials on target for a missile attack. "Then they were going to attack the people who remained in the affected area with a drone. After that, the Russians planned to target with another missile, including to destroy traces of the use of the drone," said the SBU, in its post to Telegram. SBU head Vasyl Malyuk said that he oversaw the investigation carried out by the service into the alleged plot and that it was "supposed to be a gift" to Russian President Vladimir Putin before he started his fifth term in office on Tuesday (May 10). The judge dropped rioting charges against 211 illegal migrants who were caught on camera trying to illegally enter the United States through the El Paso border wall by knocking over the guards and breaking through the razor wire on the basis of technicality.

The judge dropped rioting charges against 211 illegal migrants who were caught on camera trying to illegally enter the United States through the El Paso border wall by knocking over the guards and breaking through the razor wire on the basis of technicality. The case was dismissed by El Paso County Judge Ruben Morales at a hearing on Wednesday (May 8), stating his “hands [are] tied” after the state failed to provide the needed transfer order, which is a document for moving the matter from district to county court. “If I don’t have jurisdiction, there’s nothing I can do on these cases [except dismiss them],” Morales said during the hearing. The step came as a huge blow for District Attorney Bill Hicks who was pursuing the cases. Also Read: Wild scene on US border as 100 migrants hit guards and burst through razor wire Speaking at a press conference on Thursday (May 9), Hicks said, “Our office feels strongly … the procedure was appropriate and proper. We feel Judge Morales’ order is an improper order. We have the intention of appealing.” El Paso County Assistant District Attorney Kyle Lasley had argued that the court of Morales oversaw misdemeanour cases and that he had the jurisdiction. Meanwhile, Public Defender Kelli Childress said that the “processes were ignored” when the cases were being transferred, and Morales supported her stating that his “hands are tied” without the order transfer. Some of them may qualify for asylum: District Attorney Hicks said that the migrants, who broke the razor-wire fences and knocked over National Guard troops and also stomped one of the guards' knee in the melee, will be handed over to federal custody with Customs and Border Protection. He further stated that some of the rioters may be granted the right to pursue asylum in the United States and then be released in the country. “Border Patrol will then process them. So some may qualify for asylum, some may not. Some may be deported, some may not,” said Hicks. He further clarified that around 211 migrants “have a criminal history,” however, he added that “most do not.” The authorities in Texas had arrested all the migrants on riot-related charges after they rushed towards an area known as Gate 36. The riot charges included a maximum penalty of 180 days in prison and up to a $2,000 fine. (With inputs from agencies)

A NASA contractor has appealed to the space agency to stop the upcoming Boeing Starliner launch because of serious safety concerns being raised with the wares of the aerospace company.

A NASA contractor has appealed to the space agency to stop the upcoming Boeing Starliner launch because of serious safety concerns being raised with the wares of the aerospace company. In a press release, NASA contractor and president of ValveTech, which supplies parts to the agency, said that the officials heard a buzzing sound during the now-scrubbed Starliner launch which is likely to be an indication of something wrong with the transport capsule. "As a valued NASA partner and as valve experts, we strongly urge them not to attempt a second launch due to the risk of a disaster occurring on the launchpad," warned ValveTech president Erin Faville, while speaking to Futurism. "According to media reports, a buzzing sound indicating the leaking valve was noticed by someone walking by the Starliner minutes before launch. This sound could indicate that the valve has passed its lifecycle," he added. Also Read: From countdown to letdown: Sunita Williams' third trip to space delayed as Starliner launch is scrubbed After the buzzing sound was heard just before the first crewed launch attempt of Starliner earlier on May 6, NASA announced that the second attempt wouldn't happen at least before May 17. According to Faville, a lot of steps need to be taken to move away from the worst possible outcomes. "NASA needs to re-double safety checks and re-examine safety protocols," Faville said, adding, "to make sure the Starliner is safe before something catastrophic happens to the astronauts and to the people on the ground." United Launch Alliance pushes back warnings against Boeing Starliner The CEO of United Launch Alliance - the company which has been assigned the task of launching the craft into orbit - strongly refused to heed the warnings on X. "Not sure what to say about this one. Close to none of it is correct: Not urgent. Not leaking. Etc. Remarkable that the particular person quoted doesn't seem to know how this type of valve works," he said. The warnings of ValveTech came not just after the scrubbed Starliner launch but also in the wake of Boeing being embroiled in a controversy which included its parts falling off mid-air, the deaths of two whistleblowers and government investigations. Watch: Boeing Starliner launch postponed | Israel delegation to discuss Hamas proposal According to the press release notes of the company, the launch scrub took place after a November 2023 ruling in which a federal court discovered that a valve from another aerospace company Aerojet Rocketdyne was used by Boeing. Aerojet Rocketdyne is believed to be copying the designs of ValveTech's designs. As per a witness in the trial, the part was not perfect for the job it was meant to do, and as of now, the company has not replaced it. "ValveTech continues to question how NASA, Boeing and Aerojet could have qualified this valve for the mission without proper supporting data or previous history or legacy information, which in its experience, goes against aerospace-industry qualification protocols established by NASA," read the press release. In a new study, it has been found that an unusual candidate for dark matter, which can be referred to as parasite black holes, is likely to be lurking inside stars and slowly devouring them from the inside.

The study, which was led by astrophysicist Earl Bellinger of the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics and Yale University, said that teeny tiny black holes – which were created at the dawn of the time – may have been incorporated into Sun-like stars, and are likely to be present at their cores ever since and slowly slurping up the matter and creating more black holes.

The study has further examined how such parasitism would affect the stars and how they can be recognised out there in the Universe if scientists happen to cross them.

Parasite black holes devouring stars from inside, says study

A team of scientists has now discovered that some ancient black holes could be altering the orbit of the Earth.

A team of scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has said that swirling masses of matter, known as primordial black holes (PBHs), have been soaring past our solar system at least once in a decade and causing disruptions in planets and moons.

The PBHs, which were created shortly after the Big Bang occurred in the universe nearly 12.8 billion years ago, are as big as a microbe, but they have a density similar to that of an asteroid which can cause orbits to 'wobble.'

Two supermassive black holes, which were discovered in collision-created 'fossil galaxies', are so huge in size that they do not collide and merge in the cosmic space.

This black hole system is present inside the elliptical galaxy B2 0402+379. When the two black holes were weighed jointly by the scientists, it was found that they were 28 billion times heavier than the sun. Hence, this one became the most massive black hole binary ever spotted.

Also, the binary components of the black hole system are the closest in this supermassive black hole pair, with only a distance of 24 light-years between them.

Black holes present in the universe have always intrigued astronomers who have tried to unravel the mysteries they encompass within their unknown vastness. Till now many black holes have been discovered by astronomers some of which are only a few times the sun's mass while some are tens of billions of times the mass of our sun. It has now been suggested by a group of scientists that NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope can find a class of "featherweight" black holes which may have eluded detection till now. Also Read: Will falling into a black hole take you to fifth dimension? Here's what might actually happen The black holes are formed either when a massive star collapses or when there is a merger of heavy objects in the galaxies. The scientists, however, suspect that smaller "primordial" black holes, which include some with masses similar to that of Earth, may have been formed during the first chaotic moments of the early universe. University of California Santa Cruz's postdoctoral researcher William DeRocco said, "Detecting a population of Earth-mass primordial black holes would be an incredible step for both astronomy and particle physics because these objects can't be formed by any known physical process." He had led the study about how the black holes can be revealed by Roman. How primordial black holes may have been formed? According to scientists, the universe experienced a brief but intense phase when it was born, which is known as inflation when space stretched out faster than the speed of light. In such conditions, the areas which were denser in comparison to the surroundings are likely to have collapsed and formed low-mass primordial black holes. Although, the theory predicts that the smallest ones may have evaporated before the universe reached its present state, those which had masses similar to Earth may have survived. "Confirming their identities will be hard work and astronomers will need a lot of convincing, but it would be well worth it," he added. (With inputs from agencies)

Scientist J Robert Oppenheimer, whose twentieth-century fame has turned to cinematic acclaim with Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, could very well be described as one of the first proponents who pioneered the study of black holes.

This is because, the 'father of the atom bomb' had, along with his University of California Berkeley colleague Hartland S Snyder, published a pioneering paper in 1939 entitled "On Continued Gravitational Contraction," in which equations of Albert Einstein's general relativity and gravity were used to explain how black holes could be born in the universe.

"Oppenheimer proposed the very first collapse model to describe how a star could collapse into a black hole," said Xavier Calmet, a professor of physics at the University of Sussex in England, while speaking to Space.com.

"This model explains the formation of black holes as a dynamical astrophysical process, the final stage of the evolution of heavy-enough stars. This model is still being used today,” he added. Calmet stated that the model was recently used by him in a paper which described the collapse of black holes when taking into account quantum gravity.

"This model is very significant because it is analytically solvable — solving the equations can be done with pen and paper and does not require numerical work. All the physics is thus easily trackable," he stated. "Yet, despite its simplicity and maybe even crudeness, it is complex enough to describe many of the features of a collapsing star,” he added.

Oppenheimer vs Einstein

At a time when Oppenheimer and Snyder were working on the paper which was heavily dependent on the 1915 theory of general relativity, the father of the theory, Einstein, was completing the research which was aimed at proving that black holes do not exist.

However, Oppenheimer and his colleagues are believed to be the first scientists who truly understood the black hole's physical birth.

Three years after publishing the paper, Oppenheimer travelled to Los Alamos where he cemented his place in history and in the public's perception. However, despite his success with atomic bombs, many scientists still like to remember him as the father of black holes.

"Oppenheimer made very significant contributions to black hole physics and physics as a whole," Calmet stated. "While the general public may associate his name with the bomb and the Manhattan Project, his contributions to physics and astrophysics are well appreciated by the scientific community. He was one of the leading physicists during his lifetime and was extremely influential, and his seminal work is still relevant today,” he added.

Oppenheimer vs Einstein At a time when Oppenheimer and Snyder were working on the paper which was heavily dependent on the 1915 theory of general relativity, the father of the theory, Einstein, was completing the research which was aimed at proving that black holes do not exist. "While the general public may associate his name with the bomb and the Manhattan Project, his contributions to physics and astrophysics are well appreciated by the scientific community. He was one of the leading physicists during his lifetime and was extremely influential, and his seminal work is still relevant today,” he added. In an unprecedented move to tackle low birth rates in South Korea, the country's President Yoon Suk Yeol made a unique announcement: establishing a ministry to address the issue. The president said that he plans to establish a new government ministry which will handle the “national emergency” of the infamously low birth rate of the country which is grappling with a demographic crisis. President Suk Yeol, in a televised address, stated that he will ask for the co-operation of the parliament in establishing the Ministry of Low Birth Rate Counter-planning. “We will mobilise all of the nation’s capabilities to overcome the low birth rate, which can be considered a national emergency,” President Yeol said. He vowed that the next three years of his term would be used to improve the economy and address the issue of low births. The country's demographic crisis is likely to have been caused because of a number of factors. These include the frustrations of Korean couples with the rising cost of living and deteriorating quality of life. President Yeol calls for improvement in economic performance President Yeol said that there is a need to improve the country's economic performance. "I think the important thing going forward is indeed the economy. Corporate growth and job creation are important too but what I think is more important is to try harder to look for what is inconvenient in the life of each and every person and to resolve them," said the South Korean president. While speaking at the conference, he was standing behind a plaque which read: “The Buck Stops Here”. The ministry is set to address the challenges which will contribute to the fast-ageing population and record low birth rate. "This is not a matter we can take time to work on," he stated. The fertility rate of South Korea, which is the number of children a woman is expected to give birth to in her lifetime - decreased to 0.72 in 2023, which has fallen by eight per cent from 2022, as per the preliminary data from Statistics Korea in February. In order to motivate parents, the government has introduced a scheme in which South Korean couples will receive financial assistance from 35 million won (approx. $25763) to 50 million won (approx. $36804) in the form of different incentive and support programmes from the time of the birth of their child till they become seven year old. NASA's retired Spitzer Space Telescope captured images of streams of dust, which are thousands of light-years long, moving towards the supermassive black hole which is present at the centre of the Andromeda galaxy. This observation has now helped scientists understand how black holes, which are billions of times the mass of our sun, are able to satiate their hunger while remaining "quiet" eaters. When supermassive black holes consume gas and dust, the temperature of the material rises just before it falls into the cosmic abyss and creates sparkling lights, some of which are even brighter in comparison to an entire galaxy full of stars. Once the cosmic elements are consumed in clumps of different sizes, the black hole's brightness fluctuates. Also Read: NASA telescope hunts for 'featherweight' black holes which have gone undetected However, the black holes which are at the centre of Andromeda (one of our nearest galactic neighbours) and Milky Way (Earth's home galaxy) have emerged as the quietest eaters present in the universe. The light emitted by them does not vary significantly in the parameters of brightness which suggests that they have been consuming a small but steady flow of food and not eating large clumps. The black hole is approached by the streams little by little and in a spiral shape. What is the food source for black holes in Andromeda galaxy? According to a study published in The Astrophysical Journal, the theory of a supermassive black hole feeding on a steady stream of gas was applied while looking into the Andromeda galaxy. With the use of computer models, the authors simulated how the behaviour of gas and dust will alter if it is brought in proximity with Andromeda's supermassive black hole. In the simulated condition, it is demonstrated that a small disk of hot gas is likely to be formed closely to the supermassive black hole and continuously feed it. Watch: Scientists decode 'phonetic alphabet' of Sperm Whales The disk can be replenished and maintained through various streams of gas and dust. The researchers also found that those streams will have to stay in a particular size and flow rate or else the cosmic material will start falling in irregular clumps inside the black hole and lead to more light fluctuation. Looking at the findings of NASA's Spitzer and Hubble Space Telescope, the scientists agreed that the spirals have been satiating the supermassive black hole of Andromeda galaxy. The study's co-author and astrophysicist at the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands and the University Observatory Munich Almudena Prieto said, "This is a great example of scientists reexamining archival data to reveal more about galaxy dynamics by comparing it to the latest computer simulations." "We have 20-year-old data telling us things we didn't recognise in it when we first collected it," he added. (With inputs from agencies)
