As the pro-Palestine protests and encampments led by students continue to stall classes across colleges in the United States and Europe, one college finally agreed to their demand of divesting from Israeli firms. A five-day encampment was ended by the students at Trinity College Dublin after the university agreed to end its ties with Israeli companies. On Wednesday night (May 8), the student leaders claimed their victory in the protests which disrupted the campus and blocked people's access to the Book of Kells. A deal has been reached between the senior management and protesters, said the university, in a statement. The statement further clarified that the supplier list of the college contained just one Israeli company which will remain till March 2025 for contractual reasons. The encampment started on May 3 when pro-Palestinian protesters established dozens of tents in Fellows’ Square. Police arrest 33 protesters at DC campus Meanwhile, police resorted to pepper spray to clear a pro-Palestinian tent encampment set up on the campus of George Washington University and arrested dozens of students on Wednesday (May 8) as city officials were about to appear before hostile lawmakers in Congress to give details about how they handled the two-week-old protest. The hearing was cancelled by the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability as its chairman and other Republicans welcomed the police action. House Speaker Mike Johnson said, “It should not require threatening to haul DC’s mayor before Congress to keep Jewish students at George Washington University safe.” Watch: Pro-Palestinian protest in Amsterdam turns violent Mayor Muriel Bowser said that she and Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith have decided to remove the camp because of signs that “the protest was becoming more volatile and less stable.” These included indications that protesters had “gathered improvised weapons” and were “casing” university buildings and most likely had the intention of occupying them, said the police. In the Boeing door blowout case, whistleblower and Spirit AeroSystems' former employee Santiago Paredes claimed that the fuselages produced by the largest supplier of top aircraft makers regularly had serious defects.

In the Boeing door blowout case, whistleblower and Spirit AeroSystems' former employee Santiago Paredes claimed that the fuselages produced by the largest supplier of top aircraft makers regularly had serious defects. Paredes, who was a former quality inspector, speaking to the BBC said that he found nearly 200 defects in parts which were being prepared to be shipped to Boeing. He said that he was given the nickname "showstopper" for slowing down production when he raised his concerns. Paredes claimed that some of the defects he found while working at Spirit were minor, however, others were more serious. He added that he faced pressure because he raised issues and was asked to be less rigorous. "They always made a fuss about why I was finding it, why I was looking at it. I was finding a lot of missing fasteners, a lot of bent parts, sometimes even missing parts," the whistleblower said. Also Read: Boeing 767 cargo plane nosedives onto runway in Istanbul after front landing gear fails "They just wanted the product shipped out. They weren't focused on the consequences of shipping bad fuselages. They were just focused on meeting the quotas, meeting the schedule, meeting the budget… If the numbers looked good, the state of the fuselages didn't really matter," Paredes alleged. Meanwhile, speaking to CBS News about finding defects, Paredes said, "If quality mattered, I would still be at Spirit. It was very rare for us to look at a job and not find any defects." "Why'd that happen? Because Spirit let go of a defect that they overlooked because of the pressure that they put on the inspectors. If the culture was good, those issues would be addressed, but the culture is not good," he added. Spirit strongly disagrees with the whistleblower's allegations Spirit, reacting to the whistleblower's allegations, said that it "strongly disagree[d]" with them. "We are vigorously defending against his claims," said a Spirit spokesperson. Spirit spokesman Joe Buccino added, "We encourage all Spirit employees with concerns to come forward, safe in knowing they will be protected. We remain committed to addressing concerns and continuously improving workplace safety standards." In a voting session held in Sydney's Cumberland Council, it was decided that a same-sex parenting book would be banned from its libraries. Cumberland Council includes the western Sydney suburbs of Merrylands, Granville and Auburn. The amendment was tabled by former mayor and current councillor Steve Christou in which it was proposed "that council take immediate action to rid same-sex parents books/materials in council's library service". Interestingly, Christou had not read the book on which the debate was being carried out. In the council's meeting, Christou brandished the book which he claimed received “really disturbing” constituent complaints and said that parents were “distraught” to see the book. The book in contention was Same-Sex Parents by Holly Duhig which was kept on the shelf in the children’s section of the library. According to a report by the Sydney Morning Herald, the motion was passed as six councillors voted in favour of the amendment and five voted against it. A picture of the book was held up by Christou as he claimed that the book sparked multiple complaints from his constituents. On the book's cover, a gay male couple and their young son were featured. This community is a very religious community, a very family-orientated community," he added, “They don’t want such controversial issues going against their beliefs indoctrinated in their libraries. This is not Marrickville or Newtown, this is the Cumberland city council," Christou said. Christou further stated that toddlers shouldn’t be “exposed” to same-sex content and added that the proposed amendment was “for the protection and safety of our children”. “Hands off our kids,” he said. Auburn MP Lynda Voltz raised concern over the resolution and appealed to NSW Arts Minister John Graham to look into the issue. “I am greatly concerned at the decision of Cumberland council and believe that it may possibly risk breaching the guidelines for funding of libraries and may also be in breach of the Anti-Discrimination Act,” Voltz said. “The overwhelming majority of the people in Auburn will tell you that everyone is welcome and we pride ourselves on being a peaceful and friendly community," the MP stated. Minister holds council responsible for censorship The council was accused by Graham of engaging in censorship. “When civilisations turn to burning books or banning books it is a very bad sign. That is equally true for local councils,” the minister said. Watch: Sydney Church Stabbing: Priest stabbed multiple times during sermon “It is up to readers to choose which book to take off the shelf. It should not be up to local councillors to make that choice for them or engage in censorship," he added. He stated that the decision could impact the ability of the library to receive funding from the government. Mayor Lisa Lake opposed the motion and stated she was “appalled and saddened” by the result. Lake claimed that the book had been kept in the library since 2019 and its presence was “nothing new”. Expansion of military operations in North Korea? As per the experts, the recent demolitions hint at possible transformations in North Korea, which include potential transfers of property for military use. As per a report published by North Korea-focused analyst group NK Pro, the complex's "main residential buildings and auxiliary structures" were likely demolished between April 21 and 25. The demolition work hints that North Korea will put the sprawling palatial complex under military control, said the report, emphasising that this can be a part of recent efforts being made by the North Korean leader to modernise his armed forces. The experts were cited in the report as stating that the move could be related to Kim's designs of assigning an expanded role to the military in national development or consolidating military facilities. Australia on Wednesday (May 8) announced another hike in the minimum savings requirement for international students to get a student visa, as part of efforts to manage record migration.

Australia on Wednesday (May 8) announced another hike in the minimum savings requirement for international students to get a student visa, as part of efforts to manage record migration. The country further warned various colleges to remain cautious against fraudulent student recruitment practices. The international students from Friday (May 10) will be required to show proof of savings of a minimum of A$29,710 ($19,576) to access their visa. This is the second increase in minimum savings requirement in around seven months. It was increased to A$24,505 from A$21,041 in October. Australia's crackdown on migrants and student visas The step has been taken after multiple actions were adopted in recent months with the aim of tightening COVID-19 restrictions in 2022 which led to a sudden influx of migrants and increased pressure on an already tight rental market. In March, Australia increased English language requirements for student visas and steps were taken by the government to stop the prolonged stay of the students. Also Read: Australian PM slams China over fighter jet incident; China says its forces warned Australia Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil said that they had sent warning letters to 34 education providers for "non-genuine or exploitative recruitment practices". She added that those education providers can be imprisoned for up to two years and banned from recruiting students if they are found guilty. "Dodgy providers have no place in our international education sector. These actions will help weed out the bottom feeders in the sector that seek to exploit people and trash the reputation of the sector," said O'Neil, in a statement. In Australia, international education is one of the largest export industries and its worth was A$36.4 billion ($24 billion) in 2022-23. However, record migration - because of increase in the number of international students - has placed the government under pressure as rental prices soared across the country. The government is aiming to reduce the number of migrants in Australia by half in the next two years. "We are significantly reducing migration levels - we are in the middle of the biggest drop in migration numbers in Australia's history, outside of war or pandemic," said O'Neil. How will increasing the minimum savings limit impact Indian students? The step is likely to hit Indian students in Australia hard. In the wake of reports suggesting targeted visa denials to Indian students, a former Australian diplomat to India said that such steps can impact bilateral relations. Watch: Israel-Hamas war: Australian students join Gaza war campus protests In 2023, Australia witnessed a record number of migrants, and students from India, China and the Philippines headed the inflow. India remains the second-largest country from where international students are travelling to Australia. In between January-September 2023. 1.22 lakh Indian students were studying in Australia. Dementia has become rampant among human beings who are pushed into a deep mental abyss, devoid of memories and remembrance. It has been termed as "the long goodbye".

Dementia has become rampant among human beings who are pushed into a deep mental abyss, devoid of memories and remembrance. It has been termed as "the long goodbye". Even though the person remains alive, memories fade away slowly and irreversibly due to dementia. Dementia eventually snatches away the ability of a person to communicate, eat and drink on their own, recognise family members and understand where they are. From the 19th century, caregivers and health-care workers have described people suffering from dementia as becoming lucid. Healthcare workers say that such people were engaging in meaningful conversations, making jokes, sharing memories which were assumed to have been lost, and even asking for meals. Also Read: Does obesity really increase risk of dementia or is it the opposite? According to the study, an estimated 43 per cent of people go through brief lucidity and then die within 24 hours, and 84 per cent die within a week. Here's why this occurs? The term "terminal lucidity" was coined by researchers Michael Nahm and Bruce Greyson in 2009 since it was registered that such lucid episodes often occurred just before death. However, studies suggest that not all such lucid episodes indicate that death is imminent. As per one study, many people suffering from advanced dementia have shown brief memories of their own selves more than six months before dying. There have also been reports of cases of lucidity in other conditions such as meningitis and schizophrenia - which affect the thinking skills or the brain - and in people who have brain tumours or have sustained a brain injury. The moments of lucidity which do not necessarily indicate death are sometimes called paradoxical lucidity. They are considered as paradoxical as it goes against the expected course of neurodegenerative diseases like dementia. However, such episodes of lucidity are temporary and do not hint at any reversal of neurodegenerative disease. Scientists struggle to find cause of terminal lucidity Scientists have been struggling to explain why terminal lucidity occurs. Few episodes of lucidity were noted to have occurred when the patient's loved ones were around him or her. Some studies have also hinted at music improving lucidity. Watch: London's 'light into life' exhibition inspired by nature and science However, many episodes of lucidity do not have a distinct trigger. New York University's research team has speculated that changes in brain activity before death may lead to terminal lucidity. Notably, not everyone with advanced dementia experiences episodes of lucidity just before death. (With inputs from agencies)

OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed artificial intelligence company behind the popular image generator DALL-E, on Tuesday announced the launch of a new tool aimed at detecting whether digital images have been created by AI.

OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed artificial intelligence company behind the popular image generator DALL-E, on Tuesday announced the launch of a new tool aimed at detecting whether digital images have been created by AI. Authentication has become a major concern in the fast development of AI, with authorities worried about the proliferation of deep fakes that could disrupt society. According to the company, OpenAI's image detection classifier, which is currently under test, can assess the likelihood that a given image originated from one of the company's generative AI models like DALL-E 3. Also Read: US newspapers sue OpenAI, Microsoft for copyright infringement in AI training OpenAI said that during internal testing on an earlier version, the tool accurately detected around 98 per cent of DALL-E 3 images while incorrectly flagging less than 0.5 percent of non-AI images. However, the company warned that modified DALL-E 3 images were harder to identify, and that the tool currently flags only about five to 10 percent of images generated by other AI models. Watch: OpenAI launches image detection tool for AI-Generated content concerns OpenAI also said that it would now add watermarks to AI image metadata as more companies sign up to meet the standards from the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA).
