How Delhi's artificial rain plan is a potential solution to pollution crisis

A research team from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT),&nbsp;Guwahati, has successfully developed a fast and cost-effective 3D printed device to detect specific bacteria that cause urinary tract infection (UTI).

The research team&nbsp;led by Dr&nbsp;Partho Sarathi Gooh Pattader, an associate professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Guwahati,&nbsp;created this device that can accurately detect specific bacteria causing UTI.&nbsp;

Explaining the mechanism, Pattader said that the equipment can detect the type of bacteria within a few minutes of conducting the test.

"We have used gold nanoparticles with specifically engineered aptamers. An aptamer is like a 3D puzzle piece that fits only on the surface of a particular bacteria. The gold nanoparticles thus get agglomerated on the surface of the target bacteria giving out a unique signature that can be detected by a UV- Visible Spectrophotometer," Pattader told WION.

Not only that, the test is also gaining popularity because of its affordable nature and cost efficiency. The average manufacturing cost of a UTI analyser is Rs 75,000 ( $910 approx.),while testing a sample costs around Rs 800 rupees ($10 approx.).

However, the estimated cost of manufacturing the device is Rs 608 ($7 approx.) and sample testing will cost Rs&nbsp;8 only, Pattader added.&nbsp;

When asked about the force motivating them to conduct such research, Pattader told WION that since UTI is very common nowadays, they wanted to develop a frugal device that can detect the actual cause of UTI, which is largely affecting the women in rural areas.

UTI, though a common disease, is not inevitable.&nbsp;Pattader said that the prevention of UTI lies in maintaining proper hygiene and drinking plenty of water. If one has already encountered UTI, tests should be conducted to detect it as early as possible.&nbsp;

Prominently, UTI is caused due to various bacteria: 80 per cent of cases of UTI is due to E. Coli bacteria, while about 17 per cent is due to K. Pneumoniae, 30 per cent&nbsp;is due to S. Aureus, and about 2 per cent is due to E. Faecalis bacteria.&nbsp;

"In our study, we have shown how to detect K. Pneumoniae and as the method is generic, we have also demonstrated it for S. Aureus. Thus this prototype device with little modification can be used for other bacteria detection as well. And this device can not only detect&nbsp;but also quantify the concentration of the bacteria," Pattader&nbsp;said.

According to the attorney, this research was a combination of about 20-25 years of study. It was related to the molecular mechanisms or makeup of solar energy conversion for natural and artificial synthetic systems and synthetic reactions. 
 
The research also looked at cell cultures in incredibly low temperatures, and it related to the viability and sustainability of solar energy and future advances in the development and use of solar energy.

However, when asked if it will take another 20-25 years to restore the research now, Michael said that he doesn’t believe that it is going to be another 20 years for it because they already have the data. They will not be completely reinventing it, but they will recreate the culture of that research.

Million-dollar error: ‘Monetary amount needed to compensate research recreation,’ institute tells WION

Ruckus was created at a government school in the Araria district of India's Bihar after a snake was found in the mid-day meal served to the children on Saturday. According to the school officials, the children were being served ‘khichdi’ (a dish traditionally made&nbsp;of rice and lentils)&nbsp;prepared by an NGO when a snake was found in one of the plates.

Around 100 children had already consumed the meal before the incident was brought to light. Many of them started vomiting, and the rest were nauseated, after which they were immediately taken to Forbesganj's sub-divisional hospital for treatment. However, the school education authority claims that only 22 children fell ill as a result of consuming the food.&nbsp;

After the incident was brought to light, local officials, including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) and the Deputy Superintendent of Police&nbsp;(DSP) reached the spot to take stock of the situation.

"The kids are completely fine and healthy. However, it is a matter of investigation as to how the snake got in the food,"&nbsp;said Manchan Kesari, MLA of Araria.&nbsp;

They showed their agitation towards the school authorities and,&nbsp;according to the police, some even assaulted a few school staff members, including the headmaster of the school.&nbsp;

This is not the first time when such an incident has been reported from the state of Bihar. Earlier in 2014, a snake was found in the mid-day meal of a school in Bihar's Sitamarhi district, where 54 students fell sick after consuming the food. In another incident, insects were found in the eggs served with the mid-day meals in Bihar's Siwan district.&nbsp;
