A Kenyan climber who went missing&nbsp;close to Mount Everest's peak has been found dead. On Wednesday (May 22), 40-year-old Joshua Cheruiyot Kirui and his 44-year-old Nepali guide Nawang Sherpa went missing when Kirui was attempting to become the first African to ascend Mount Everest without the use of oxygen.

Kirui's death on Everest is the fourth reported fatality this week. A Romanian climber, a British climber and his Nepalese guide were discovered dead on Tuesday.

A local tourist official told the AFP news agency that the search team that had been sent to find the two had not yet located the guide. Even for seasoned climbers, scaling the world's tallest mountain, Everest is regarded as exceedingly dangerous and challenging.

According to the Himalayan Times, Sherpa notified the base camp that Kirui had exhibited "abnormal behaviour" and had "refused to return and even consume bottled oxygen". Base camp authorities informed the newspaper that contact with the two was lost soon after the message. According to Kipkemoi Limo, a close climbing companion of Kirui's, he passed away after a fall.

He further mentioned that his friends and relatives are asking if Kirui approved of his burial on Mount Everest or if he wanted his remains to be returned to Kenya, which will cost $190,000.&nbsp;

Before his ascent, Kirui told the BBC last week that he had done considerable physical training.

Kirui had said that he was sure he could climb Everest without using more oxygen. But in case he had any problems, he told&nbsp;the BBC that&nbsp;Sherpa would offer emergency oxygen assistance and that he had emergency evacuation cover.

Kirui worked for one of Kenya's largest banks as a banker.

The community of Kenyan mountain climbers was shocked to learn of his passing. "Our brother now rests on the mountain. It's been a long night," fellow Kenyan mountaineer James Muhia, who had been sharing regular updates about Kirui's attempt, said on X.

The report highlighted that there is no rise in hospitalisation or serious instances, therefore there is no need for alarm or panic. Mutations will continue to occur rapidly, as is typical of viruses such as SARS-CoV2.

According to data gathered by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), there have been 34 KP.1 cases reported from seven states and union territories, with 23 of those cases coming from West Bengal. Maharashtra has reported four KP.1 cases, Gujarat and Rajasthan have reported two, while Goa, Haryana, and Uttarakhand have reported one.

Out of all the states that have reported KP.2 cases, INSACOG has identified around 290 cases nationwide, with 148 of those cases coming from Maharashtra alone. Other states and Union territories that record KP.2 sub-variants include:

Baramulla sees record voter turnout of 59% in Lok Sabha Elections 2024

Leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Manish Sisodia, was denied bail by the Delhi High Court on Tuesday in connection with proceedings filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) over the Delhi excise policy scam case.

Referencing Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma denied the bail request, stating that the prosecution had established a prima facie case of money laundering.

The Court denied Sisodia's request for bail, stating that his actions amounted to a "great betrayal of democratic principles".

The Court also found that Sisodia destroyed significant evidence, including electronic evidence. The solitary judge in question in this case referred to two allegedly broken mobile phones.

The Court also considered the fact that Sisodia was a top AAP leader, had a prominent position in the Delhi government, managed several ministries, and was an influential figure.

The court said that Sisodia was involved in the crucial destruction of electronic evidence and is an influential person as he is a powerful leader of the party. The court said that the possibility of Sisodia influencing material witnesses cannot be ruled out.

"This court is of the opinion that petitioner has not been able to make out a case for grant of bail in his favour," the judge stated.

The Bench went on to say that Sisodia utilised fraudulent methods to indicate that the Delhi excise policy had public&nbsp;support when, in fact, the policy was designed to benefit only certain people.&nbsp; 
 
The court said that pre-drafted emails&nbsp;were sent “under the guise of public comment by various people under his direction. “Corruption in this case originated from the applicant’s desire to frame the policy. The dissemination of false information by portraying it as a form of feedback constitutes corruption,” the court added.

The Delhi High Court maintained the trial court's orders, which were further upheld by the Supreme Court in October 2023. However, the Supreme Court stated at the time that Sisodia could apply for bail again if the trial moved too slowly. He then filed a second set of bail pleas.

Sisodia has been in jail since February 26, 2023. He is being investigated by the CBI and the ED in connection with the Delhi excise policy case.

The Court also found that Sisodia destroyed significant evidence, including electronic evidence. The solitary judge in question in this case referred to two allegedly broken mobile phones. The Court also considered the fact that Sisodia was a top AAP leader, had a prominent position in the Delhi government, managed several ministries, and was an influential figure. The court said that Sisodia was involved in the crucial destruction of electronic evidence and is an influential person as he is a powerful leader of the party. The court said that the possibility of Sisodia influencing material witnesses cannot be ruled out. "This court is of the opinion that petitioner has not been able to make out a case for grant of bail in his favour," the judge stated. The Bench went on to say that Sisodia utilised fraudulent methods to indicate that the Delhi excise policy had public support when, in fact, the policy was designed to benefit only certain people. The court said that pre-drafted emails were sent “under the guise of public comment by various people under his direction. “Corruption in this case originated from the applicant’s desire to frame the policy. The dissemination of false information by portraying it as a form of feedback constitutes corruption,” the court added. Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a former judge of the Calcutta High Court who is contesting Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket, was prohibited from campaigning for 24 hours on Tuesday by the Election Commission (EC) for making disparaging statements against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during an election rally. His remarks, according to the Election Commission of India, violate the Model Code of Conduct, hence the ban will be in place from Tuesday (May 21) at 50 pm until Wednesday at 5 pm. The Election Commission took action following a complaint from the Trinamool Congress on Gangopadhyay's statements made against Banerjee at a public gathering in Haldia on May 15. The poll panel's decision also came a day after Gangopadhyay, BJP candidate for Tamluk Lok Sabha seat, replied to the Election Commission's show-cause notice about his "undignified" statement directed at Banerjee. The survey panel considered the statements to be "improper, injudicious, and undignified," implying a breach of the Model Code of Conduct. Because you are having your makeup done by Keya Seth. Mamata Banerjee: is she even a woman? I keep wondering sometimes." How did BJP respond to Election Commission's 24-hour ban? In response, BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya stated that the Election Commission is conducting the election to guarantee that it is free, fair, and peaceful. “The poll panel has decided after feeling that Gangopadhyay’s comment was in bad taste and has hurt people’s sentiments. But the TMC has tried to misinterpret his comments. He is a dignified person and has fought for people’s rights,” he said.
