If our definition of 'dirty' insinuates being born in a certain place or in certain conditions, then nothing is dirtier than that mindset.

And then? What? Internet is rife with people demanding that their local municipality relocate their dogs and leave them 'outside.' Firstly, it is illegal to relocate a dog in India. Yes, you read it right. You can't grab a street dog on the road and push it outside. Outside what? If we leave all the dogs from our high-class communities outside the city, would it be any fair towards the people living in the suburbs? This is a typical classist attitude - not caring about the problems others might face due to one's privilege. Imagine waking up to find ten befuddled dogs outside your house because some Richie Rich pushed out the dogs from their area. That is what happens due to the relocation of dogs. Leaving dogs in another area, wherever it is, increases the dog population of that area tremendously. The bigger problem is that these dogs are territorial in nature. They fight aggressively with the inhabitant dogs there, for space and survival. Relocating dogs out of your community doesn't solve anything. It only displays people's self-centrism and gross dearth of civic sense.&nbsp;

In a country with this level of hatred towards an animal, adoption seems to be a distant dream. If people are willing to go to court only to stop a dog from eating food, do we have any hope left? Our courts have ruled time and again that street dogs have the right to live. The most recent order talks about five fundamental freedoms every animal is entitled to. Still, the cases of abuse of dog feeders and frivolous petitions to restrict feeding don't seem to end - unwarranted additions to the lakhs of issues pending already. Every person has not only liberty but a fundamental duty to be kind to animals. Denying them the right to do so is an insult to the values our country prides itself in - peace and non-violence.

After school, taking time out for hobbies only becomes more difficult so if someone told you that you should just finish that one course because life is all fun and games afterwards, I am sorry. So while you are killing it at your job, making loads of money alongside transforming the world, here are some quick reads that you can finish in a day or two.

George Orwell's Animal Farm is a timeless classic about a group of farm animals that overthrow their tyrant master. Frustrated with man's domination and cruelty, all animals unite and decide to rule themselves. However, their unity doesn't stand for long. While this setting is evidently imaginary, the events can be understood in the context of human lives too. It broadly deals with how power corrupts even those who were once sincere. This book is the perfect and most entertaining metaphor I ever read. It is a critical take on society itself and can be better interpreted by history and politics enthusiasts. Classics are often known for their profound English narration and diction; this isn't any different.

2. Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 by Cho Nam-Joo

I would love to believe it is an Indian book if only the names of the characters are changed. Kim Jiyoung, our lead character, faces bias from her birth till the present date, where she is a mom to a baby girl. Her coming-of-age is a mirror of how women are vexed to a point that they don't know themselves anymore. The woman on the cover is faceless because it could be anyone and every one of us. The author voiced her thoughts on stereotypes ranging from male-child preference to workplace harassment to the unfair burden of motherhood. It has to be one of the best feminist critiques of our time. I can only be elated that the book has been translated into English so the world can (and should) read it. What makes it so powerful is that the author included practical and real-world issues. At least one of them will seem relatable to the readers and that is unfortunate.

3. Mahashweta by Sudha Murty

Mahashweta and many other works of Sudha Murthy are short and easy to read. Mahashweta deals with our detrimental obsession with women's physical looks. Anupama, the lead character, has a penchant for drama and Sanskrit literature. She is married soon after college and abandoned soon after she is diagnosed with leukoderma. Needless to say, her parents aren't keen on supporting her too. The rest of the book is about how Anupama builds herself into an independent woman who doesn't bother about society. The book is so beautiful, almost poetic to read and flawless in its meaning. One doesn't need a dictionary while reading Sudha Murthy. Her works are also an example of how one can deliver awe-inspiring stories using basic language. Gently Falls the Bakula is yet another book of hers that could make it to this list.

4. The Secret by Rhonda Byrne

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, also a documentary with the namesake, is an inspiring book I would categorise into the self-help genre. The book essentially deals with the Law of Attraction, a positive belief system that several famous people have spoken about. Rhonda explains it in a very simple way, using stories and illustrations; also considering some contrary views people may have. Many other teachers like Rhonda working on self-development have contributed their input too. Rhonda's language is so simple yet so effective and convincing. She doesn't ask us to perform any uphill tasks in the name of inspiration. In fact, a lot of ideas presented in this book are the ones we are taught since our childhood namely gratitude, optimism, self-confidence, etc. The author puts together all these learnings in a meaningful form.

Shortlisted for the JCB Literature Prize 2021, it is the debutant author's coming-of-age in Meghalaya. For people who don't know much about the state, the book is a treasure trove of knowledge. The author touches upon her childhood, family and lifestyle, slowly moving to her education and becoming aware of the world. It is crucial for us to know the political conflicts that happen in the border states of India and how Indians suffer because of the same. The characters are presented in an empathetic manner - be it D's neighbours or her teacher or her best friend. Also, only a person belonging to the place can do justice in describing the social and political situation. D's story is all kinds of beautiful, to read and reflect on. For a person like me with barely any idea about Meghalaya, this was an eye-opener. Without giving spoilers, I'll just say, this book talks about human relationships and grief as well.

6. Wild Embers by Nikita Gill

Pages: 160

I first discovered Nikita Gill's poetry on social media and followed her wherever I could. She has authored several poetry collections and she often talks about them on the internet. Her poems are short and have strong meanings, unlike the usual cheesy stuff you find on social media. Most of her poems are about feminism while the rest are empowering and inspiring. If you read her famous poem, which is an alternate imagination of fairy tales where the heroine isn't a damsel in distress, you'll like all of her other poems as well. It was quite an easy and interesting read for me.

7. Harper Lin's short stories

You can always reach out for a Harper Lin book if you are looking for underrated, hidden gems in the crime fiction genre. I often read her books and wonder why she isn't as reputed as she should be. With basic language, vivid descriptions and loads of analogies, her murder mysteries are just perfect. They have everything - drama, investigation, suspense and a writing style that does justice to all of it. Her stories are set in small towns and all of those I read had female leads. She has authored quite a great number of crime novels, all around 200 pages. I would call them short stories but that, again, is subjective.

8. Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata

Sayaka Murata's book, translated into English by Ginny Tapley Takemori, is a slice-of-life of Keiko. Keiko Furukura worked part-time at a convenience store and often found herself a misfit in society. She had been a loner since her childhood; unmarried, childfree and irked with people around her trying to fix her. What happens when she tries to fulfil the social aspirations of a young woman forms the rest of the story. With simple language and beautiful translation, it is the story of a woman who loves herself and her job. It is also a reflection of how we look at people who don't fit our standards of success. Though I initially had a tough time understanding Keiko, I found myself cheering for her and her choices by the end of it. It is a pleasant and enjoyable read that will leave you smiling for quite some time.

The author voiced out about stereotypes ranging from male-child preference to workplace harassment to the unfair burden of motherhood. It has to be one of the best feminist critiques of our time. I can only be elated that the book has been translated into English so the world can (and should) read it. What makes it so powerful is that the author included practical and real-world issues. Atleast one of them will seem relatable to the readers and that is unfortunate.

Mahashweta and many other works of Sudha Murthy are short and easy to read. Mahashweta deals with our detrimental obsession with women's physical looks. Anupama, the lead character, has a penchant for drama and sanskrit literature. She is married soon after college and abandoned soon after she is diagnosed with leukoderma. Needless to say, her parents aren't keen on supporting her too. The rest of the book is about how Anupama builds herself into an independent woman who doesn't bother about the society. The book is so beautiful, almost poetic to read and flawless in its meaning. One doesn't need a dictionary while reading Sudha Murthy. Her works are also an example of how one can deliver awe-inspiring stories using basic language. Gently Falls the Bakula is yet another book of hers that could make it to this list.

4. The Secret by Rhonda Byrne

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, also a documentary with the namesake, is an inspiring book I would categorise into the self-help genre. The book essentially deals with Law of Attraction, a positive belief system that several famous people have spoken about. Rhonda explains it in a very simple way, using stories and illustrations; also considering some contrary views people may have. Many other teachers like Rhonda working on self-development have contributed their inputs too. Rhonda's language is so simple yet so effective and convincing. She doesn't ask us to perform any uphill tasks in the name of inspiration. In fact, a lot of ideas presented in this book are the ones we are taught since our childhood namely gratitude, optimism, self-confidence, etc. The author puts together all these learnings in a meaningful form.

5. Name Place Animal Thing by Daribha Lyndem

Shortlisted for the JCB Literature Prize 2021, it is the debutant author's coming-of-age in Meghalaya. For people who don't know much about the state save its tourism, the book is a treasure trove of knowledge. The author touches upon her childhood, the family and lifestyle, slowly moves to her education and becoming aware of the world. It is crucial for us to know the political conflicts that happen on the border states of India and how Indians suffer because of the same. The characters are presented in an empathetic manner - be it D's neighbors or her teacher or her best friend. Also, only a person belonging to the place can do justice in describing the social and political situation. D's story is all kinds of beautiful, to read and reflect. For a person like me with barely any idea about Meghalaya, this was an eye-opener. Without giving spoilers, I'll just say, this book talks about human relationships and grief as well.

6. Wild Embers by Nikita Gill 
Pages: 160 
I first discovered Nikita Gill's poetry on social media and followed her wherever I could. She authored poetry collections (other than Wild Embers) and posts on the internet as well, if you are interested. 
I haven't read any poetry book except this one. The reason being that I am meticulously critical of poetry. Her poems are short and have strong meaning, unlike the social media's cheesy stuff with rhyming words. Most of her poems are about feminism while the rest are empowering and inspiring. It was only a few times throughout the book that I had to look up the dictionary. 
If you read her famous poetry - alternate imagination of fairy tales where the heroine isn't a damsel in distress, you'll like all of her poems. It was quite an easy read for me; I'd read a few poems daily as there is no need for continuity. You can also read it along with other books.

7. Harper Lin's short stories 
You can always reach out to me for underrated, hidden gems in crime fiction genre. Harper Lin is one of them. I read many books from her food and murder mysteries and I often wonder why she isn't as reputed as she should be. With basic language, vivid descriptions and loads of tasty food, her murder mysteries are just perfect. They have everything - drama, investigation, suspense and a writing style that does justice to all of it. Her stories are set in small towns and all of those I read had female leads. 
She has authored quite a great number of crime novels, all around 200 pages. I would call them short stories but that, again, is subjective.

8. Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata

Sayaka Murata's book, translated into English by Ginny Tapley Takemori, is a slice-of-life of Keiko. Keiko Furukura worked part-time at a convenience store and often found herself a misfit in the society. She had been a loner since her childhood; unmarried, childfree and irked with people around her trying to fix her. What happens when she tries to fulfill the societal aspirations from a young woman forms the rest of the story. 
With simple language and beautiful translation, it is the story of a woman who loves herself and her job. It is also a reflection of how we look at people who don't fit in our standards of success. Though I initially had a tough time understanding Keiko, I found myself cheering for her and her choices by the end of it. It is a pleasant amd enjoyable read that will leave you smiling for quite sometime.

Short books to read on your busy days

From someone who spends most of her free time with dogs and raised and fostered a few of them, this is not advice but conversation. I haven't pursued any course in dog behaviour except listening to professionals and chewing the brains of other dog parents.

My knowledge is bestowed by the best dog behaviour professors in the world - dogs themselves. Fight for them Having a dog demands ample patience not only towards dogs but hostile humans. You may have to assert your love to your neighbours, relatives and dog-forbid police and courts too. (Bad pun 1). It is vexing to deal with people who are bent on hurting animals. However, we have to be patient and walk the road less taken with our dogs. (Bad pun 2). If we don't fight for them, who will? Dogs did test my patience a few times and humans, well, every time. I mean, I am still explaining to people why I love dogs. Why? Animal abuse is a real problem and the animal rights movement is a real movement. You'll confront several people whose humanity was slain long ago by their arrogance. Don't let anybody or anything convince you that dogs are inferior living beings. Be extremely well-versed with the animal protection laws in India and your rights (they come with responsibilities) as a caretaker of animals. Take help from professionals in this sector whenever required. Your dog shouldn't have to forgo anything to appease people. Dog is different Your dog is not biologically your child. They won't adore all your relatives and prance onto their lap. They won't sleep when you do. They won't abide by your diet choices. (Biological children shouldn't be compelled to do these either but I won't digress). Recognise that your dog won't like many things you do and vice versa because we are two different lives. They get angry, sad, happy, grumpy, moody, defensive or disinterested for their own reasons. They are allowed to have feelings that don't emulate their humans. Their actions and reactions are their willing. Maybe not as sharp as ours but they have a brain as well. As much as they love you, they can't be your child and fulfil your expectations. One more time I see someone rubbing off their human expectations and standards on dogs, I am going to lose my cool. Also, isn't it fantastic that our dogs aren't like us? We certainly aren't in need of more creatures with fake laughs and hidden motives and obsession with money. (Philosophy lesson 101). Each dog is different If you are pissed off with the Sharmaji ka Beta comparison, don't expect your dog to replicate another one. Some dogs are exuberated by human presence. They keep pouncing on you until you are tired. They follow you gregariously and play fetch like a pro. They give the perfect poses. Their Instagram has lakhs of followers. They eat without fuss and sleep on the dog bed. They are good. If your dog doesn't do these, is he or she inferior to other dogs? No. They are all different just like how you and your overachiever cousin are. While expecting your dog to be something perfect, you are missing his unique personality. Let him be the dog he wants to be. Learn, understand and allow him to show you his true self. Dogs aren't xerox copies of each other. Even in the same breed or among pups of the same litter, each dog is different and so are their needs. There is no one-size-fits-all dog manual. If you genuinely want to be a better dog parent, your dog is the best guide. You'll both be much better that way than by transforming him into a completely new dog altogether. Adjusting for the dog Remember when you pestered your parents for a dog as a kid? And they said you were more than enough for them? They had a point. Getting a dog is not child's play. (Last bad pun). I assume you've planned everything meticulously and made an adult decision to bring home a dog. You may still be overwhelmed by the responsibility that dawned upon you. You ought to make changes in your lifestyle for the dog and it will be new. But you've got to pull your socks up and out of your dog's mouth. (Are you still counting bad puns?). You might face situations you weren't prepared for. But life is always uncertain, right? (Philosophy lesson 102). So be sportive and adjust for them. Remember, you got them because you wanted them. The least you can do as the most superior creature on this planet is to be kind. Raising a dog involves effort - physically and mentally. There are going to be days when you are too exhausted or sluggish to put that effort for your dog. But that shouldn't be normalised. If getting a dog was only about buying dog food and taking selfies, every house would have a dog. Personally, I never knew I could wake up at 6 or spend almost an hour in my apartment parking or jump across muddy pools or shout in the middle of the road until my dogs made me. There's a plethora of awkward stuff I did with my dogs. It'd be better for you to experience it than to read from me. Breed of the dog If I had a dollar for every time someone suggested me to get a Labrador or Golden Retriever or Pug instead of my indies, I would have bought an island away from everyone. There is nothing special about buying a purebred dog unless you consider prejudice and pomp to be special. My indies are agile, gorgeous, special, quirky, silly, frolicsome and flawless. I wouldn't take it from anyone who breeds dogs as if they were some endangered species. It would take another article to reveal the horrors of dog breeding. So if you've rescued or adopted a dog, be proud of your choice. Like you flaunted the glittery pencil box in your fourth class as if it was a diamond. The fact that our dogs had an abusive past doesn't make them shameful. It only reflects the horrifying reality for India's homeless dogs. Each time you buy or breed a dog, you deny a rescued dog's last chance at life. While actively detesting the herd mentality in your life, why would you buy a dog of the breed that your neighbors or friends showed off? While we all love a good lecture on body positivity and acceptance, it is the fluffy, furry puppers that go home while Indie dogs languish. If it is because they have less fur then please note that it is suitable for Indian climate. Indies are adapted to live in India. I never let anybody demean my dogs for not having a fancy name. Because a dog is much, much more than its market price and branding. I see you The enormity of contradicting information is making your head spin. Your dog just doesn't eat and you don't know if their diet is to be changed. You are nervous because they have a vaccine today. You are rejected by yet another cab or auto because you have a dog along. You don't know if the mess your dog made is just mischief or a sign of discomfort. You want to rush to the vet right now but it is an odd time. You feel guilty that you couldn't take care of them. You feel bad that your dog had only one person in the world and that person failed them. You feel miserable when you see them on the vet's table. I know how it feels. I understand that you are still learning and trying to be a better person. I appreciate the effort you are making to give them a better life. You may feel the opposite but believe me when I say you aren't alone. We all have been in your shoes and know that your dog chewed them. (I have a repertoire of bad jokes). Keep being amused by their goofy antics, continue with the screechy baby talk, let the treats flow in, say sorry when you step on their tail, rant to them about your day, and get anxious about what they are doing at home in your absence and gallop to the vet whenever they need it. Amidst all this, don't forget to hug them and tell them you love them. Because one day, you will miss precisely what makes you tiresome now. Dogs change your life in ways you never thought. A letter to dog parents

Our existence on this planet is inextricably linked to the millions of species that also call it home. Of them, there are many that made their way into our heart as pets. Our bonding with pets doesn't need introduction. From celebrities flaunting their pets to people buying pet specific accessories, from visiting pet cafes to having pet crematoriums, from crying when a dog dies in a movie to watching cat videos on loop, we undeniably are in love. Animal lovers understand that having a pet is not only a responsibility but a privilege. In a world like this, it is a privilege to have a heart that cares for a voiceless creature. If you have one such, you mustn't wait to read these books about humans' glorious bond with their companion animals. While the ones that are made into movies are already celebrated, I tried to mention those which I felt are underrated.

Felix the Railway Cat by Kate Moore: 
Felix is Huddersfield Station's Senior Pest Controller and Chief Happiness Officer. As the station was yearning for a cat, an employee rescued a pregnant cat which eventually birthed Felix. First mistaken to be a male, Felix won the hearts of all the employees of the station, including those who didn't have an affinity to cats. Workplaces of Tata, Amazon and Google have made headlines for bringing dogs to the office because, why not? 
The book describes Felix's growth, her skills, naughtiness, tricks, achievements and most importantly, her relationship with the staff and commuters of the station. It is when a regular commuter creates a facebook page that Felix rose to fame. 
The author writes about Felix with immense empathy and vivid descriptions, as though she is writing about one of us. The second reason I love this book is the way it is narrated, with the right amount of wit, emotion and seriousness. The first reason is apparently the cover.

Wild and Wilful by Neha Sinha 
This is undoubtedly my favourite Indian book about animals so far. Neha Sinha, a wildlife conservationist talks about select rare Indian species of animals in detail, her work with them and the bias she faced as a woman close to wildlife. Neha and her fellow women are met with judging looks when they work with wild animals, more so in villages. 
While giving the scientific information, Neha also adds a humane angle to the whole human-animal conflict. She talks about animals with empathy and kindness. The book covers various aspects ranging from laws and policies on paper to the ground reality that tribal and rural people have to face. It constantly reiterates that wild animals are living things that have feelings. Neha also talks to fellow conservationists and researchers to bring out the facts and curb the myths about so-called cruel animals. 
We need more people to read, write and be like her to save animals because it is already too late.

The Traveling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa 
It is only a coincidence that I read this book during a long travel. 
Found under Satoru's car, Nana didn't take much time to get into his house. Having lost his fond cat Hachi as a kid Satoru dotes over Nana. However, circumstances compel Satoru to give Nana up for adoption. Thus begins their long journey from one city to another, from van to train, requesting quite a few of his friends to adopt Nana. At each stage, we meet Satoru's friends and the various instances that shaped his life. None of the adoptions worked. During the journey, Nana experiences new places, new friends and of course, some troubles. He is smart enough to know what is going on and stubborn enough to not leave Satoru's side ever. What persuades Satoru to give up the apple of his eye and how their journey culminates is for you to read. 
As we see shelters overflowing with recklessly abandoned pets, it is heartwarming to read about someone take this commitment. This story depicts how our pets are going to be with us and they should be, no matter what. Reading Nana's point of view felt like communicating with animals, which we normally can't do. That is what makes the story extremely personal. Through Nana, the author presents the thoughts of our pets - about us, about other animals, about life and the world in general. They think much more than they show. They understand what we don't tell. 
Nana talks to us, questions us, makes us laugh, cry, wonder and think. If it had such profound impact on me, a dog person who never had a cat, I can only imagine how touching it will leave cat owners.

A dog's life: The Autobiography of a Stray by Ann. M Martin 
For someone who fosters the dogs of her street, this book is a gift. In my opinion, it is the best description of the life of a stray. 
The story, as the name suggests, is the autobiography of a puppy born as a nobody. The author takes us through the stormy life that leads her way home. However, there are bleak chances of strays finding loving homes, in real life. 
Our protagonist is named Squirrel. Squirrel and Bone are born in an abandoned toolshed. Before they could learn the essential survival skills, they lost their mother. Squirrel is later seperated from Bone too. Thereon, she fights everyday for her survival. 
Considering how the author breathes life into Squirrel, it isn't a surprise that she owns a dog and cats. It is vital to remember that the dog may be fictional but the story is not. Every dog we see on the road is as helpless and disadvantaged as Squirrel. In multiple incidents, the author shows how humans let down the man's best friend. 
It is a must-read for people working with dog shelters or in an individual capacity.

Laika's Window by Kurt Caswell 
Once an anonymous mongrel on the streets of Moscow, Laika is now immortalised. To say that she sacrificed her life would be an understatement. It is a joy that sending animals to space is banned now. What happened to Laika is unfair, to say the least. 
The author, through poetic and empathetic descriptions, writes what Laika might have gone through during the grueling process. Did she know that she was being sent on a one-way mission? Did she understand why she was being subjected to unbearable torture? When she looked out of the window of her spacecraft, what did she see? 
This book depicts how an innocent little girl lost in the space war between two countries and suffered in the name of science. It was a tough read for me, contemplating how we claim to love dogs yet are willing to let them die so that we explore the cosmos. I appreciate that the author concerned enough about Laika to present the whole event from her point of view. Reading this is sure to leave one in thought, for we have known Laika merely as a dog that died in space; never as a living thing that suffered till the very end.

Considering how the author breathes life into Squirrel, it isn't a surprise that she owns a dog and cats. It is vital to remember that the dog may be fictional but the story is not. It was a tough read for me, contemplating how we claim to love dogs yet are willing to let them die so that we explore the cosmos. I would reiterate on how we gave him the time he needed and never, ever forced intimacy or friendship. I couldn’t do anything to pacify his mental ordeal. I was only bringing him food. Fast forward to today, his tyranny made him the only dog of his street, sparing one female. He gets an appreciable choice of foods, ranging from mutton (courtesy a nearby mutton shop) to biscuits and anything his neighbours give to dog food (from me). The brat broke multiple food and water bowls. He changed about four collars, never being without one. He occasionally gets baths and dazzles like the teeth in a toothpaste commercial for almost a day (post which, he deliberately rolls in mud). He once grappled with a few desi dogs and ended up with a dog bite on his neck. His neighbours got him treated on the spot and mollycoddled him for a few days. He healed in no time. Now, he tactically chases away any intruders without physical harm. He still gets to decide when he will play with me and how. Sometimes, he runs over and leaps on me while the other times, he prefers his nap over a screechy human voice and a phone flash. He casually ignores the curd rice kept for him like you did, in your school lunch box. (The only difference being, he isn’t scolded).

In course of my working with animals (in individual capacity), I have come across tens of animals abandoned by their ‘owners’ without remorse. To do so is detrimental at many levels – these dogs undoubtedly get into trouble with the local indies and stand minimal chance. They would encounter hunger, thirst, ruthless weather and abusive humans; none of which they were prepared for. In simple words, not every dog is as fortunate as Milky to find a street without dogs and people without ego. They would contribute to the existing number of homeless animals on the streets.

A simple news search on the internet would reveal the magnitude of this problem. NGOs are overburdened with the number of street dogs needing attention. In that case, it would not only be difficult but also unfair to expect them to tend to our pets too. The reasons people give for why they abandoned their companion animal are so bizarre, I would rather discuss them separately.

Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 (PCA), criminalises the owner failing to provide the animal with sufficient food, water and shelter; abandoning without reasonable cause; permits the diseased or disabled animal to di in any street without reasonable cause.

In the rare event of the family having a reasonable cause why they cannot keep the pet anymore, they should behave like family i.e., find another responsible and better home for their animal. Leaving them on the roads is not only a deliberate act of animal cruelty but also a sign of inhumanity.
