Greece has launched a free seven-day holiday programme for the tourists who fled Rhodes due to deadly wildfires in July 2023.

Over 25,000 tourists, mainly from Britain, who were evacuated from their hotels during the fires, are eligible for the latest compensation scheme by the government.

Under this initiative, those particular individuals can avail their e-vouchers worth 536.58 USD (€500).

The vouchers can be used to cover the cost of accommodation for a week-long stay in the country.

The programme is set to be executed in two phases, i.e. an initial phase that will run till May 31 starting from now, and a second phase that will run until Nov 15 starting from Oct 1.

“The scheme is up and running as the prime minister promised,” the Greek tourism ministry’s general secretary, Myron Flouris, told the Guardian. “It’s been a very complicated process not least, I think, because we’re the first country in the world to do this.”

Over 5,000 travellers have already signed up for this programme, as per reports.

“Anyone who was staying in areas that were affected by the fires is eligible,” said Yannis Papavasiliou, the head of the island’s union of hoteliers.

“The response has been very good and we are told will be even stronger come the autumn,” he said.

“It will apply only to hotels, not Airbnb-style private accommodation. At the end of the day, Greece is making good on its promise to recompense all those who lost their holidays because of climate change,” he added.

Last year in the month of August, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that the tourists who were forced to escape the island due to the wildfires would be given a free one-week holiday.

Speaking on a British morning show, Mitsotakis said the tourists could take up the offer in the spring or autumn of 2024.&nbsp;

“For all those whose holiday was cut short as a result of wildfires, the Greek government in cooperation with local authorities will offer one week of free holidays on Rhodes next spring, the next fall, so that we make sure they come back to the island and enjoy its natural beauty," Mitsotakis said.

"Not a single human life was lost in Rhodes, and no injuries were reported... We understand that guests have been inconvenienced, but I am happy to tell you that Rhodes is more welcoming than ever. The island is back to normal."

Local people as well as tourists were forced to flee their homes and hotels during the wildfires that ravaged the island in July 2023.&nbsp;

As many as 20,000 tourists were rescued from danger&nbsp;in what was the largest evacuation undertaken by the country.&nbsp;

Greece, whose economy has been heavily battered over the past decade, relies heavily on tourism to generate revenue. Rhodes, the ninth-largest island in the eastern Mediterranean, is a popular holiday spot and Mitsotakis wants tourism to quickly return to previous levels.

The United Kingdom's immigration authorities arrested 11 men and one woman recently over allegedly being in breach of their visa conditions and working illegally at a cake factory and bedding and mattress factory.

The UK Home Office on Wednesday (Apr 10) released a statement saying that the Immigration Enforcement officers dismounted the bedding and mattress business in the West Midlands region of Britain after illegal work was being carried out on-site.

Seven men were arrested from there, all said to be Indian nationals over suspected illegal working, said the Home Office.

Later, four more Indian men were arrested at a cake factory over suspicion of being in breach of their visa conditions.

“Four more Indian men were arrested at a nearby cake factory. They were found to be in breach of their visa conditions, and one was also working illegally. An Indian woman was then arrested for immigration offences at a private home, with further raids planned throughout the afternoon,” it said.

The officials, according to news agency PTI, said that four of the offenders were detained pending review over removal from the UK or deportation to India.

The two businesses under the radar could possibly face significant fines if it gets established that they did not conduct pre-employment checks or employed illegal workers.

“This operation is a clear example of the way we are stepping up immigration enforcement activity across the country,” said Michael Tomlinson, UK Minister for Countering Illegal Migration.

“Employers found to be breaching the rules can expect significantly increased fines, and if workers are found to have no right to live or work here, we will not hesitate to act and remove them from the country,” he said.

In the month of February, the Home Office raised the fines significantly to three times for employers who allowed illegal migrants to work for them.

“Illegal working causes serious harm to communities, puts vulnerable people at risk and defrauds the public purse. The arrests send a clear message that we are clamping down on this dangerous practice,” said Eddy Montgomery, Director of Enforcement, Compliance and Crime at the Home Office.

“People smugglers sell migrants the lie that they can work in the UK. The reality is that they can’t – and those found to be working illegally or facilitating this crime will face the full weight of the law,” he said.

12 Indians arrested in UK over visa violation following raids on cake and bedding factories

Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court on Friday (Apr 12) sent Bharat Rasthra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody till April 15 over the Delhi excise policy case.

Earlier on Friday, CBI stated that Kavitha did not give satisfactory responses on being questioned about the payment of kickbacks made to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to sway the excise policy for Delhi to the advantage of a liquor lobby.&nbsp;

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja, after hearing arguments of CBI and Kavitha’s counsel, passed the order.

Former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao's daughter Kavitha was arrested by CBI on Thursday (Apr 11) in Delhi's Tihar Jail where she was imprisoned following her arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the month of March over her alleged involvement in a money laundering case related to the Delhi excise policy scam.

While seeking Kavitha's custodial remand, CBI said to the court that one of the firms under Aurbindo Group made a payment of Rs 14 crore via a bank transaction in July 2021.&nbsp;

The BRS leader's attorneys opposed CBI's remand application and argued that the arrest by the central probe agency was without any approval, permission or imprimatur of the Court.

"K Kavitha was lying in custody in the PMLA case. This Court is exercising distinct jurisdiction in the capacity of Special Judge (PMLA) vis-a-vis Special Judge (CBI). Both jurisdictions cannot overlap and the CBI cannot use them to violate the procedures established by law," the lawyers submitted.

India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday (Apr 11) launched a scathing attack on Pakistan stating that if the country finds itself incapable of eliminating terrorism originating from its territory, it must take New Delhi's help.

Singh further warned Islamabad to be ready to face dire consequences if it tries to destabilise India via terrorism. &nbsp;

"If Pakistan attempts to destabilize India through terrorism, it will have to face the consequences. Pakistan needs to control terrorism. If Pakistan thinks that it is not capable of controlling it, if they feel they are not capable, then India is a neighbour, if they want to take India’s help, they should. India is ready to provide all assistance to combat terrorism,” he said in an interview with news agency ANI.

The Union defence minister further said that if Pakistan's intentions are clear, it must take strong action against cross-border terrorism.

"They are our neighbours, and if their intention is clear that terrorism should end, they should do that themselves or take help from India…we both can end terrorism. But this is their call, I am just giving a suggestion," he added. &nbsp;

The veteran BJP leader then said that India will not allow terrorists to operate within the country's borders and that it will do everything to stop it.

"Those who imposed dictatorship through Emergency, they accuse us of being dictatorial," he further said.

Singh said that he was made convenor for Mirzapur-Sonbhadra during the JP Movement against Emergency which was imposed in June 1975 and continued till March 1977.

"I was jailed as we were opposing Emergency. We used to agitate. We created awareness among people, how Emergency is dangerous and reflects dictatorial tendency," he said.

Former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao's daughter Kavitha was imprisoned in Delhi's Tihar Jail following her arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) that took place on March 15.

After obtaining permission from a special court, the CBI officials&nbsp;interrogated Kavitha inside the jail over the WhatsApp chats that were recovered from co-accused Buchi Babu’s phone.

She was also questioned by the probe agency regarding the documents about a land deal in which&nbsp;Rs 100 crore was purportedly paid to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in kickbacks to sway the excise policy for Delhi to the advantage of a liquor lobby.&nbsp;

"I have time and again cooperated with both the agencies. I have appeared before them four times. I have answered all their questions to the best of my knowledge and gave all my bank and business details. I will fully have cooperated with the agencies by submitting all of my mobile phones that the agencies blamed me for destroying. In the last two and a half years of investigation, both the agencies conducted multiple raids, physically and mentally harassed, threatened and arrested many people," she&nbsp;further alleged.

As per the plan unveiled by ESA, the Occulter is set to fly around 150m from the Coronograph.

Once both the satellites reach their exact locations, the Occulter will project a shadow onto the Coronagraph face, further masking the sun to reveal the corona.

"The two spacecraft will act as if they are one enormous 150 metre-long instrument," said the ESA's Director of Technology, Engineering and Quality, Dietmar Pilz.

However, Proba-3 aims to carry out the feat in a routine manner successfully.

“It will demonstrate various types of formation flying configurations and it will experiment with in-orbit rendezvous techniques,” Pilz said.

“Once proven, formation flying will be an enabler for future missions,” he added.

Nicaragua in its case that it presented before the International Court of Justice on Monday (Apr 8) demanded the World Court to pass an order to Germany halting the exports of military ammunition to Israel.

It also sought the restoration of funding for the UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA, stating concerns about Genocide in Gaza.

Nicaragua's agent ambassador Carlos Jose Arguello Gomez told the court that Berlin had violated the 1948 Genocide Convention by continuing to supply Israel with arms even after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled it was plausible that Israel violated some rights guaranteed under the genocide convention during its assault on Gaza.&nbsp;

"There can be no question that Germany (...)was well aware, and is well aware, of at least the serious risk of genocide being committed,"&nbsp;Arguello Gomez said.

He told the judges that Berlin was not abiding by the obligations under international law by continuing to provide Israel with military aid.

"This has got to stop," Arguello Gomez said.

Israel has rebuffed all the allegations stating that it has the right to defend itself.
