"TikTok is the most appealing app for first-time voters, so it does have a big influence as a platform to campaign and propagate election-related information," the news agency quoted Anita Wahid, a researcher who has worked with TikTok on issues related to online trust and safety, as saying.

However, some experts have raised concerns saying that some of the information circulated on such platforms may be incorrect.

TikTok on its website says that its policy is to eliminate "harmful misinformation" and work with fact-checkers to flag or debunk it.

"We prioritise protecting the integrity of elections on our platform so that our community can continue to enjoy creative and entertaining TikTok experiences," a TikTok spokesperson said in an email.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday (Apr 7) took the internet by storm with his goof up during a rally where he expressed confidence that NDA would win "more than 4,000 seats" in the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections.

His prediction is almost ten times of the sanctioned strength of Lok Sabha, which is 543 and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's target for NDA is 400.

JD(U) supremo Kumar, who ditched the INDIA bloc and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) three months ago, made the gaffe at a rally in Nawada district where he spoke just before PM Modi.

One of the segments of his speech garnered traction online where he can be heard saying "four lakh" before correcting himself and saying, "char hazaar se bhi zyada (more than 4,000)".

He can be later seen touching PM Modi's feet while sitting next to him before greeting him with folded hands.

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar trolled for ‘will win more than 4,000 seats’ gaffe at PM Modi's rally

United States Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Monday (Apr 8) said that the discussions that will take place between Washington and Beijing in the near future will primarily focus on China's need for a shift in policy around industry and the economy.

“We intend to underscore the need for a shift in policy during these talks — building on the over two hours I spent on this topic with the vice premier last week,” she told a news conference as she wrapped up four days of her visit to China.

Yellen said that discussions regarding Beijing's plans for its economy were also held during talks with the Chinese officials.

She met with top Chinese officials including Vice Premier He Lifeng in Guangzhou and Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing during her visit.

“Over the past year, we have put our bilateral relationship on more stable footing,” Yellen said.

“This has not meant ignoring our differences or avoiding tough conversations,” she said. “It has meant understanding that we can only make progress if we directly and openly communicate with one another.”

As per a readout from China, Li stated that Beijing hoped the United States would comply with the market economy norms and would also refrain from politicizing trade disputes.

He then said that the developments related to China's latest energy sector would also significantly contribute to global carbon neutrality efforts.

The United States and China agreed to “intensive exchanges on balanced growth in the domestic and global economies,” as per a Treasury readout released after Yellen’s meetings in Guangzhou with He.

Both the countries also decided to start "Joint Treasury-PBOC Cooperation and Exchange on Anti-Money Laundering" in order to expand "cooperation against illicit finance and financial crime," stated the readout.

"When the global market is flooded by artificially cheap Chinese products, the viability of American and other foreign firms is put into question. And we've seen this story before. United States President Joe Biden is set to warn China this week over its growing belligerent movements in the South China Sea during his scheduled summits with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

According to the Financial Times report, two high-ranking US officials said that Biden is expected to voice grave concerns over the ongoing situation surrounding the Second Thomas Shoal, a disputed submerged reef within the Spratly Islands.

The officials stated that Biden would emphasise that the Sierra Madre is covered under the US-Philippine Mutual Defense Treaty and that the US president expressed “deep concern” when he had a telephonic conversation with Xi last week.

“China is underestimating the potential for escalation. We’ve tried to make that clear in a series of conversations . . . that our mutual defence treaty covers Philippine sailors and ships and by extension . . . the Sierra Madre,” the Financial Times quoted one of the officials as saying.

“China needs to examine its tactics or risk some serious blowback,” they added.&nbsp;

Biden held his first direct talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping last week, since their meeting in November, where the US president emphasised "the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and the rule of law and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea," the White House said in a statement.

The statement indicated that the patrols were conducted in response to the joint naval exercises by the US and its allies in the South China Sea. The PLA, in its brief statement, added “All military activities that disrupt the South China Sea and create hotspots are under control.”

The Iran-backed rebel group claimed that in the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean, it attacked two Israeli vessels that were headed to Israeli ports, whereas in the Red Sea, it targeted a British ship and several American frigates.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree released a televised statement in which he said that the latest in a spate of incidents&nbsp;took place during the last 72 hours.

Earlier, a British security company Ambrey said that its intelligence received information suggesting that a vessel was targeted in the Gulf of Aden on Sunday, nearly 102 nautical miles southwest of Mukalla in Yemen.

"The Master of the vessel reports a missile impacted the water in close proximity to the vessel’s port quarter," UKMTO said in an advisory note.&nbsp;

"No damage to the vessel reported and crew reported safe," it added.

It did not specify who launched the projectile or&nbsp;provide further details. It wasn't immediately clear if the attacks reported by the British intelligence firm were the same as the ones claimed by the Houthi rebel group.

"People of Delhi love Arvind Kejriwal. They don't think of him as a CM but as their son, or brother. All want the bail for Arvind Kejriwal. BJP's ED and CBI haven't been able to show a single penny of liquor scam from the leaders of AAP," Atishi said.

She further alleged that the money trail in the liquor policy scam can be traced from liquor trader Sharat Reddy to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

"If there is any money trail in this issue, it's from liquor trader Sharat Reddy to the BJP. Sharat Reddy donated 55 crores to the BJP... Why the BJP has not been raided, or accused, why has the BJP's National President not been summoned or arrested? ED, CBI act as political weapons of BJP,"&nbsp;she stated.

Israel kills senior Hezbollah commander in strike on southern Lebanon

Ahead of India's upcoming general elections, Kankar Munjare, Bahujan Samaj Party's&nbsp;Lok Sabha candidate from Madhya Pradesh's Balaghat, on Saturday (Apr 6) said that he had left his house as he felt that he should not stay under one roof with his wife, Anubha Munjare, who is a Congress MLA.&nbsp;

He stated that two people following varied ideologies should not stay in the same home during polls.

Former MLA and MP Munjare said that he would come back to his residence after the polls that are due on April 19.

"I left my home on Friday and am living in a hut near a dam. If two persons following different ideologies live under one roof, people will think it is match-fixing," he told the news agency PTI.

His wife Anubha, who defeated Bharatiya Janata Party's Gaurishanker Bisen during the Assembly polls in November 2023, expressed disappointment over Munjare's decision to leave the house and said that she was extremely hurt and further claimed that a woman, after her marriage, goes to her marital home to remain there till death.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday (Apr 7) said that if the US Congress does not approve military assistance, then Kyiv would lose the war against Russia.

Ukraine on Sunday said that a Russian strike on the town of Gulyaipole in the southern Zaporizhzhia region claimed the lives of three people.

Meanwhile, Moscow said that Ukraine struck the dome above a shutdown reactor at the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear station on Sunday, said the plant's Russian-installed administration.

The plant had earlier also reported attacks by Ukrainian drones.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that it had been informed by the Russian-run plant that a drone had exploded at the site and the information was "consistent" with IAEA observations.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said both sides should refrain from actions which "jeopardise nuclear safety".

Ukraine would lose war against Russia if US Congress blocks military aid, says Zelensky

In his latest poll promise, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has said that if voted to power, his party will conduct a financial as well as institutional survey to determine the wealth distribution among people throughout the country.

He said that along with the survey, as promised, the party will also conduct a nationwide caste census

"We will first conduct a nationwide caste census to determine how many people belong to the Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and minorities. After that, we will conduct a financial and institutional survey in a historic step to ascertain the distribution of wealth," Gandhi said while addressing a public rally in Hyderabad.

The Congress leader further emphasised that the grand old party would make sure that all the communities are represented in every sphere of society and that their rightful share is given.

He said that even though 90 per cent of the total population comprises SCs, STs, OBCs and minorities, they cannot be seen in jobs.

"The truth is that this 90 per cent of the population does not have a share at all," Gandhi said.

"There are 90 IAS officers who run the country's administration. But only three of them are OBCs, one Adivasi and three Dalits," he added.&nbsp;

When we talked about Rs 500 cylinder, 200 units of free electricity, Greh Lakshmi, and free bus travel, we heard the voice of the people and prepared these guarantees," he said.

"The spirit of the manifesto is the five guarantees. First of all, every youth will get a job with a salary of Rs 1 lakh per year. We have made an apprenticeship law in which every youth in India will be guaranteed a one-year apprenticeship. This will be applicable in the public sector, private, education and all sectors. Apart from this, more promises for the youth are in our manifesto," Gandhi added.

He also underlined that under the 'Nari Nyay Law', they will deposit Rs 1 lakh in the bank account of a woman from a poor household in India, every year.

"This is a revolutionary step. This will change the face of the whole country. Just imagine, the Congress party government is going to give at least Rs 1 lakh directly to the bank account of the poorest families in India. This means that there will not be a single family in India whose income will not be Rs 1 lakh per year," he said.

The Russian weather authorities believe that on Wednesday it will reach its peak level.
