The 'Doomsday Clock' came closest to the literal moment of doom on Tuesday. Atomic scientists set the 'Doomsday Clock' just 90 seconds short of midnight, citing the threats of nuclear war, disease and climate change as determinant factors amid geopolitical volatility led by ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

What is the Doomsday Clock?

The 'Doomsday Clock' is created by the Chicago-based Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. It illustrates how close humanity has come to the end of the world.

It moved its 'time' in 2023 to 90 seconds to midnight, 10 seconds closer than it has been for the past three years.

What does midnight on Doomsday Clock mean?

The midnight on this clock marks the theoretical point of annihilation.

The clock’s hands are moved closer to or further away from midnight based on scientists’ reading of existential threats at a particular time.

At present, the situation in Ukraine aggravated by the Russian actions has raised the proximity of the world to its theoretical annihilation.

"Russia’s thinly veiled threats to use nuclear weapons remind the world that escalation of the conflict by accident, intention or miscalculation is a terrible risk. The possibilities that the conflict could spin out of anyone’s control remains high," Rachel Bronson, the bulletin’s president and CEO told a news conference in Washington on Tuesday.

A Chicago-based non-profit organization, the bulletin updates the clock’s time annually based on information regarding catastrophic risks to the planet and humanity.

Apocalyptic threats reflected by the clock include politics, weapons, technology, climate change and pandemics.

The clock had been set to 100 seconds to midnight since 2020, which was already the closest it had ever come to midnight.

The board said the war in Ukraine had also heightened the risk that biological weapons could be deployed if the conflict continued.

"The continuing stream of disinformation about bioweapons’ laboratories in Ukraine raises concerns that Russia itself may be thinking of deploying such weapons," Bronson said.

Sivan Kartha, a bulletin board member and scientist at the Stockholm Environmental Institute, pointed to the economic uncertainty added with climate change as reasons behind the theoretical proximity of the world to its annihilation.

"Global carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels, after having rebounded from the COVID economic decline to an all-time-high in 2021, continue to rise in 2022 and hit another record high… With emissions still rising, weather extremes continue, and were even more clearly attributable to climate change," Kartha said.

In 1947, the clock began ticking at seven minutes to midnight.

At 17 minutes to midnight, the clock was furthest from “doomsday” in 1991, as the Cold War ended and the United States and Soviet Union signed a treaty that substantially reduced both countries’ nuclear weapons arsenals.

India's President Droupadi Murmu in an address to the nation ahead of country's 74th Republic Day emphasised on shedding the colonial baggage while progressing on the path of development. President Murmu hailed the country's success as a democratic republic, adding that a multitude of creeds and language only united India's citizens.

"India is, of course, home to one of the oldest living civilisations. India is called the mother of democracy. As a modern Republic, however, we are young," President Droupadi Murmu said.

"We have succeeded as a democratic republic because so many creeds and so many languages have not divided us, they have only united us. That is the essence of India," she added.

India made encouraging economic progress: President Murmu

President Droupadi Murmu, while emphasising India's mission of 'Sarvodaya' (rise of all), said that the country has made the most encouraging progress on the economic front.

"Last year, India became the fifth largest economy in the world. It needs to be underlined that this achievement comes against the backdrop of high economic uncertainties around the world. The pandemic has entered the fourth year, affecting economic growth in most parts of the world. In its initial phase, Covid-19 also hurt India’s economy badly. Yet, guided by our able leadership and driven by our resilience, we soon came out of the downturn, and resumed the growth saga. Most sectors of the economy have shaken off the pandemic effect," President Murmu said.

Gaganyaan's upcoming launch reason to be proud: President Murmu

Addressing the launch of India's own homegrown human spaceflight capability, President Murmu said that the country has reasons to be proud of its achievements in the domain of science and technology.

"India has been among the handful of pioneers in space technology. As long-pending reforms in this sector are underway, private enterprises are now invited to join the quest. The 'Gaganyaan' program to carry Indian astronauts into space is under progress. This will be India’s maiden human space flight. Yet, even as we reach out to the stars, we keep our feet on the ground," President Murmu said.

A case related to the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was found 'partially admissible' by the European Court of Human Rights on Wednesday. The case, brought by the Netherlands and Ukraine, has put Russia's alleged role in the incident in spotlight. The court in Strasbourg ruled that Donetsk and Luhansk republics were under the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation from 11 May, 2014 to 26 January 2022. Thereby, the judge admitted the accusations from Kyiv of Moscow being responsible for shooting down of the plane.

In its ruling on the admissibility of the petition by the Netherlands and Ukraine, the European Court of Human Rights also referred to the presence of Russian military in the eastern Ukraine since April 2014 and the large-scale deployment of Russian troops on August 2014 at the latest.

The judges then pointed out that Moscow "had a significant influence on the military strategy of the separatists, to whom it had supplied weapons and other military equipment on a significant scale from the early days, and that finally carried out artillery attacks at their request".

South Korea's Kimchi, a uniquely sour, salty and umami flavoured dish of fermented vegetables, has hurt the country's economy last year, data from Korea Customs Service showed. South Korea imported record Kimchi-related ingredients even as inflation upped the prices of cabbage and related items that give Kimchi its signature pickle-like flavour.

The total value of imported Kimchi was recorded at $169.4 million last year, showing a spike of more than 20 per cent from 2021, according to data from the Korea Customs Service released Wednesday.

How much Kimchi did South Korea import?

In terms of volume, South Korea imported 263,434 tonnes of kimchi, a 9.5 per cent increase from 2021 but lower than the level of 281,187 tonnes in 2020.

The United States on Tuesday said that it will raise pressure on China to stop buying crude oil from Iran. The statement comes in addition to the ongoing spree of sanctions that Washington has imposed on Tehran to control its nuclear activities.

"China is the main destination of illicit exports by Iran", Robert Malley, Biden administration's special envoy for Iran, told Bloomberg Television. Malley added that Washington will engage with Beijing in an "intensified" manner to ensure it does not continue oil imports from Iran.

Malley further admitted that the United States cannot enforce its anti-Iran sanctions perfectly.

Iran ramped up its uranium enrichment program in the wake of choking sanctions from Washington in 2018. The United States under former president Donald Trump's administration had pulled out of an agreement aimed at containing Tehran's atomic program. It then tightened sanctions on export of Iranian petroleum products.

Meanwhile, Iran's export of its crude oil and refined products has increased in recent months. A report in Bloomberg said that much of the Iranian oil will be heading to China in disguise of coming from Malaysia. China is the world's biggest crude oil importer.

According to shipping analytics firm Vortexa Limited, Iran's oil exports went up to about 1.4 million barrels a day last month, the highest in over the last three years.

Robert Malley further admitted that Washington's talks with Iran on reviving the nuclear agreement from 2015 have largely broken down.

He said that the current focus of the US is to ensure that Tehran doesn't use force against protestors demonstrating for women's rights and to prevent its support for Russia in the wake of war in Ukraine.

"Our focus has shifted to Iran killing its own citizens and what we can do to counter that, and to Iran assisting in Russia’s killing of Ukrainian citizens and what we can do to deter and stop that," he said. "The nuclear deal has not been on our agenda."

Donald Trump fined nearly $1 million for frivolous lawsuit against Hillary Clinton

Generosity has many names. Secrecy is one of them. Keeping an act of generosity a secret is often seen as a preferred way to ensure that the act doesn't become a matter of embarrassment for the beneficiary. The generosity of an Alabama couple has become part of the global news cycle. A small town in the US state is honouring a man who paid off his neighbours' medicine bills for years. Hody Childress, a former US air force veteran kept it a secret until shortly before his death when he had to reveal it to his daughter and task her for dropping the money at the pharmacy.

Hody Childress reportedly began his anonymous charitable campaign when he walked into a drug store in his hometown of Geraldine in 2012 in Alabama. There, he learned from the owner that sometimes families cannot afford to pay for their medicines.

Childress then handed the pharmacy owner $100 and told her to save it for "anyone who can’t afford their prescription," Alabama-based WVTM reported.

"Do not tell a soul that money came from me," the owner of Geraldine Drugs, Brooke Walker, recalled Childress saying, according to a Washington Post report on Thursday. "If they ask, just tell them it’s a blessing from the Lord."

Childress went back to the pharmacy, which doubles as a meeting place for many of Geraldine’s 900 residents, monthly over the next decade or so, handing Walker a $100 bill each time for the same purpose, telling the pharmacy owner to say to the beneficiaries that it was simply "a blessing from God".

He contributed thousands of dollars to his fund at a pharmacy for several years.

It was enough to help two people a month who lacked insurance or adequate health benefits to cover their prescriptions, according to Washington Post.

Once, obstructed by chronic health issues, Childress tasked his daughter Tania Nix to drop the customary $100 bill to the Geraldine Drugs.

Nix was quoted as saying by Washington Post: "I was shocked – I had no idea that he was helping people at the drug store," Tania said, according to WVTM.

She elaborated on the conversation in an interview with the Washington Post.

"He told me he’d been carrying a $100 bill to the pharmacist in Geraldine on the first of each month, and he didn’t want to know who she’d helped with it. He just wanted to bless people with it," Nix, 58, reportedly said.

Childress died on 1 January, 2023. He is survived by his second wife, Martha Jo, two children, three stepchildren and 15 grandchildren.

Nix told those who gathered at his funeral last weekend about what her father would do at Geraldine Drugs. Word of Nix’s revelation spread around town, inspiring communities across the United States and beyond.
