Two years later, the Men in Blue registered their first series victory on foreign soil on the 1970-71 tour of West Indies where they won the five-match series by 1-0.&nbsp

The series is also remembered as Sunil Gavaskar made an impressive debut by scoring 774 runs in the series against the fearsome Windies pace attack.

By this time the world knew that India is a cricket growing country and has potential players to give tough competition. But what followed next was something which nobody had ever thought and is considered as the turning point of Indian cricket.&nbsp

In 1983, it was the 3rd edition of the Cricket World Cup tournament held from 9 June to 25 June 1983 in England and Wales. Under the captaincy of Kapil Dev India stunned the world by beating defending champions West Indies in the final of Prudential Cup.&nbsp

Two years later, in 1985, the World Championship of Cricket was held in Australia to commemorate 150 years of European settlement in Victoria. India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan in the final to lift the trophy. In his twenty-four years cricketing span, Tendulkar is the only player to have scored one hundred international centuries, the first batsman to score a double century in a ODI, the holder of the record for the most number of runs in both Test and ODI, and the only player to complete more than 30,000 runs in international cricket.

Despite, such a class in the batting lineup, India won just two matches at the 1992 World Cup and lost to Zimbabwe in England in 1999. Sandwiched in between was another home World Cup, which saw Tendulkar top the run charts, but India well-beaten by the genius of Sri Lanka's Aravinda de Silva in a Kolkata semifinal.

After the phase, many great crickets like Mohammad Azharuddin, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Virendra Sehwag, Anil Kumble, VVS Laxman and Yuvraj Singh were introduced and created their niche in the world cricket.&nbsp

Ajit Agarkar (109* in 2002)

Ajit Agarkar’s century at Lord’s was almost a shock and full stop to all the questions raised on his caliber. He surprised all and sundry with his batting in a game everyone thought India was certained to be defeated. Agarkar came out to bat on the fourth evening with scoreboard reading 170 for six and slammed an unbeaten 109 runs which came in 190 balls and included 16 boundaries.&nbsp

Sourav Ganguly (131 in 1996)

Cricket great Sourav Ganguly was quite at ease at the crease when he batted for more than seven hours and hit 20 fours in scoring 131. His ton in 1996, made him the first Indian to score a century at Lord’s in his first innings.

Current Indian cricket team’s head coach Ravi Shastri and former test captain Mohammad Azharuddin scored splendid hundreds in contrasting styles on a perfect batting track, while responding to England’s mammoth 653. Leading the way, Vengsarkar made 103 runs in 295 balls while Gundappa made 113 in 337 balls. Vengsarkar’s innings lasted just less than six hours, and included 13 fours. He was named man of the match for his superb inning.&nbsp

In 1982, Vengsarkar played another brilliant innings under pressure. Coming in to bat at the fall of the first wicket, he scored 157 of 246 runs made by India during his stay at the wicket. His inning included 21 boundaries.&nbsp

He was calm, composed and his shots selection displayed a class, known to have been possessed by legendary Indian staunch Sachin Tendulkar.&nbsp;

Kohli’s 149 runs masterclass against swing attack is an example of terrific discipline and dedication which banished questions about his technique against the moving ball.&nbsp;

It lifted the visitors within 13 runs of England’s first-innings 287 despite a batting collapse.

Kohli refused to take the bait as James Anderson, who got him out four times in 2014, kept up a line just outside off stump, a tactic he had succumbed to the last time.&nbsp;

Even the Indian bowlers left the English side wounded and appalled with their attack.&nbsp;

R Ashwin produced a disciplined bowling effort to bundle out England in first innings and Ishant Sharma took the charge in the second innings.

They ran through England's middle and lower order to record figures of 4/62 (Ashwin in first inning) and 5/51 (Ishant in second inning) to deplete England batting on their land.&nbsp;

But what cost them the game&nbsp;was the battle Virat Kohli had to fight alone.

He rose above outside edges, plays and misses, dropped chance too, to stitch together to a close target set by Joe Root's side.&nbsp;

The top order collapsed, middle order failed to give the required strength, leaving feisty Kohli wage the lone battle amidst ruins.

KL Rahul, who was touted to be the trump card for India, failed to stay on the crease for long.&nbsp;

Shikhar Dhawan, who flopped in the practice match, continued his poor show in both the innings.&nbsp;

Cheteshwar Pujara, whose twin failures, 1 and 23, during the practice match against England, made him sit on the bench. His axing also whipped up selection debate but was it worth is still a question.&nbsp;

England, being the No1, have won ten of their last 12 bilateral series while India have won their last nine.&nbsp;

In the last meeting between the two sides, in India in early 2017, the home side emerged victorious 2-1 with the series decided by the English bowlers' inability to restrict India's batsmen.

However, skipper Eoin Morgan's team posses unrecognisable attitude, in personnel, approach and style. Chris Woakes' absence though will be a big loss given his role with the new ball and at the death.

The ground factor has always played a crucial role and here also spin will be a key factor for both teams as the pitches for the three games at Trent Bridge, Lord's and Headingley will be drier than normal, a report said.&nbsp;

Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali routed Australia during England's 5-0 victory last month, but should find things harder against India's batting line, supported by Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, who bowled a brilliant spell during India's T20I series victory, last week.&nbsp;
