<p>In their research, the scientists focused on Harpegnathos saltator, or jumping ants, and found that altering the orco gene led to a major reduction in the number of olfactory neurons.</p>

<p>Study’s first author Bogdan Sieriebriennikov said,&nbsp;“Understanding how the nervous system develops is among the most pressing challenges in modern neuroscience."&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Ants, like humans, are highly social and display cooperative social behavior, and thus provide an ideal system to study sensory-mediated social behaviour,” said Hua Yan, the study’s senior author.</p>

<p>“Loss of function of odorant receptor neurons leads to deficits in olfactory sensing and is often associated with social isolation, neurological disorders such as schizophrenia, and social disorders such as autism,” added Yan.</p>

<h2><strong>What did the study entail?</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>The researchers used CRISPR technology to create genetically modified ants by mutating the orco gene. These modified ants exhibited changes in their olfactory organs and had trouble interacting with their peers.</p>

<p>“We found that the antennae—which are the ‘nose’ of the ant—had very few cells. They were almost empty, suggesting that the cells that sense smell were absent from the mutant ants,” noted Yan.</p>

<p>According to the study, the researchers found out that mutant ants lacking Orco lost most of their olfactory neurons. The reduction in the neurons took place even before these ants reached their adulthood.</p>

<p>Interestingly, some neurons did survive without Orco. This indicates that other factors might also play a role in their development. “Some neurons must periodically ‘fire’ to develop properly. Without Orco, smell cells did not ‘fire’ and complete their development, leading to their death,” Sieriebriennikov added.</p>

Biden and Macron celebrate US-French ties, show support for Ukraine and Gaza ceasefire deal

<p>Russian authorities have recovered the bodies of all four Indian students who tragically drowned in the Volkhov River, as per a Maharashtra government official who reportedly confirmed this development on Saturday (June 8).</p>

<p>Jalgaon district collector Ayush Prasad said, “While two bodies were found within the first two days of the June 4 incident, Russian officials said two more were recovered this morning."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The deceased students have been identified as Harshal Anantrao Desale, Jishan Ashpak Pinjari, Jia Firoj Pinjari, and Malik Gulamgous Mohammad Yakub. They are all aged between 18 and 20 and were studying at Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University.</p>

<p>To repatriate the bodies, they are being flown to Mumbai. Once the bodies arrive in Mumbai&nbsp;they will be transported to Jalgaon district, the native place of the students.&nbsp;Jishan and Jia Pinjari were siblings from Amalner in Jalgaon, while Desale was from Bhadgaon in the same district.</p>

<p>The tragic incident occurred while the students were on a walk along the Volkhov River. The students entered the waters, during which one of the deceased students Jishan Pinjari was on a video call with his family.</p>

<p>“When they entered the Volkhov river, Jishan made a video call to his family. His father and other family members were pleading with Jishan and the others to come out of the waters when a strong wave swept them away,” a family member shared with a media outlet.</p>

<p>A fifth student, Nisha Bhupesh Sonawane, survived the incident and is currently under medical care. "Sonawane is now under the care of medical staff," a university official confirmed.</p>

<h2><strong>MEA condoles&nbsp;bereaved families</strong></h2>

<p>The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India on Friday (June 7)&nbsp;confirmed the incident and expressed condolences to the bereaved families. "Our Consulate in St. Petersburg remains in contact with the university and local authorities and is providing all possible assistance," the ministry said in a statement.</p>

<p>Unlike previous assumptions that portrayed the megathrust as a single, continuous fracture, the new data revealed that it comprises at least four distinct segments. Researchers identified the segment stretching from southern Vancouver Island through Washington state as the most perilous.</p>

The Assembly segment of Bahour recorded the highest voter turnout of 88.76 per cent and the enclave of Mahe recorded the lowest turnout of 65.11 per cent, reported Chief Electoral Officer P Jawahar.
