The official logo for King Charles III's coronation on May 6 was revealed by Buckingham Palace on Friday (February 10). The logo would be used for the celebrations to accompany the coronation. Buckingham Palace said that the logo features flora from all four countries that make up the United Kingdom (UK) and includes the rose of England, the thistle of Scotland, the daffodil of Wales and the shamrock of Northern Ireland, news agency Reuters reported. Sir Jony Ive, the logo's designer, said "The design was inspired by King Charles’ love of the planet, nature, and his deep concern for the natural world." Ive, who is the former chief design officer of Apple Inc, said the logo speaks to the happy optimism of spring and celebrates the beginning of this new Carolean era for the UK. After the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II in September, Charles automatically became king of 15 realms, including Canada, New Zealand and Australia. However, his official coronation will take place on May 6 at London's Westminster Abbey in keeping with a tradition dating back some 1,000 years, Reuters reported. Buckingham Palace also said on Friday that accompanying the service, there would be celebrations including traditional processions, a music concert at Windsor Castle, street parties, light shows and community volunteering. A report by BBC on Friday said that on May 8, there will be an extra bank holiday with events highlighting the work of volunteers. (With inputs from agencies)

The French government said on Friday (February 10) that Iranian-French academic Fariba Adelkhah was released from the Evin prison. According to a statement, the French foreign ministry said, "It is essential that all of Ms Fariba Adelkhah's freedoms are restored, including returning to France if she wishes," news agency Reuters reported. Adelkhah had been in prison after Iranian authorities arrested her in June 2019 during a visit. She is one of the seven French nationals detained in Iran — an issue which has worsened relations between the two countries.

On Friday, the foreign ministry reiterated the demand that all French nationals arbitrarily detained in Iran are released immediately and without conditions.

In 2020, Fariba Adelkhah was sentenced to five years in prison on national security charges. The Iranian authorities moved her to house arrest later but in January she returned to jail. The academic has denied these charges.

On Saturday, Adelkhah's lawyer Hojjat Kermani told Reuters that she was freed last night. After speaking to Adekahm, Kermani said that the academic was happy just like any other prisoner would be when released from jail and the sentence ends.

However, the lawyer said that it was not yet clear how much longer Adelkhah would have to stay in Iran before returning to France. “Legally, her file is considered completed, and legally there should be no problem to leave the country, but this issue has to be reviewed. So...it is not clear how long it will take,” Kermani told the news agency on Saturday.

In recent years, dozens of dual nationals and foreigners have been arrested by Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards mostly on charges of espionage and security. Rights groups have accused Iran of trying to extract concessions from other countries through such arrests. However, Tehran which does not recognise dual nationality denies taking prisoners to gain diplomatic leverage.

The United States administration shot down a high-altitude object over Alaska on Friday (February 11), just six days after an alleged Chinese spy balloon was downed which heightened tensions between Washington in Beijing. As the anti-government demonstrations in Peru continue, President Dina Boluarte on Friday called a multiparty dialogue to end the crisis. And in earthquake-ravaged Turkey, rescuers saved a six-month pregnant woman and her seven-year-old daughter.

Toronto's mayor John Tory resigned in a sudden move on Friday (February 10) after local media reported that he had an affair with a much younger staff member. According to a report by the Toronto Star, the 31-year-old woman staff member has not been identified. Tory, who is 68 years old, acknowledged the affair and said it had ended earlier this year and the woman left city hall.

"During the pandemic, I developed a relationship with an employee in my office in a way that did not meet the standards to which I hold myself as mayor and as a family man," Tory told reporters on Friday night, CTV News reported. Tory said the relationship ended by mutual consent. "During the course of our relationship some time ago, the employee decided to pursue employment outside City Hall and secured a job elsewhere,” he added.

"I recognise that permitting this relationship to develop was a serious error in judgment on my part. It came at a time when Barb, my wife of 40-plus years, and I were enduring many lengthy periods apart, while I carried out my responsibilities during the pandemic," Tory further told reporters and apologised to his wife and family.

With the resignation from the mayor's post, Tory said on Friday that in the coming days, he would be working with the city manager, city clerk, and the deputy mayor, Jennifer McKelvie to ensure an orderly transition to a new administration.

“While I deeply regret having to step away from a job that I love, in a city that I love even more, I believe in my heart, it is best to fully commit myself to the work that is required to repair these most important relationships as well,” he said, CTV News reported.

Tory also thanked Toronto's residents for trusting him as the mayor since 2014. However, the 68-year-old did not reveal when his last day in office would be.

Toronto's mayor John Tory resigns over affair with much younger staffer: Reports

Javier Marcos, a shopkeeper in Spain's Barcelona has been fined $8,027 (around €7,501) for posting an online advertisement for a shop assistant stating that the applicant should be a woman above the age of 40. Marcos runs a curtain-making shop in Barcelona's Fort Pienc area. According to a report by the Guardian on Friday (February 10), Marcos posted the advertisement to replace his only female employee, who is retiring, with someone with a similar profile.

Earlier, Marcos was warned by the labour inspectorate that he could be fined over the advertisement and hence removed it. However, the inspectors went ahead with the fine with the reason that the advertisement discriminated against others on the grounds of both sex and age.

“I have no intention of discriminating against anyone. In fact, I wanted to offer an opportunity to a group of people for whom it is difficult to find work,” Marcos said. He also said that the majority of his clients were women, adding, the fine is a lot of money for a small business. The Guardian report said consolation which Marcos had was that the fine would be reduced to €4,500 if it was paid within 30 days.

Agreeing to pay the fine, the Barcelona shopkeeper mentioned the Catalan government's campaign that encouraged more women to become firefighters. Only two per cent of firefighters are women and the government launched a recruitment video with the slogan- FemEquip – a play on words meaning both “we’re making a team” and “women’s team”.

Javier Marcos said, “What’s the difference between my advertisement and theirs?”

Shopkeeper in Spain's Barcelona fined over $8,000. Here's why

A sports magazine has come under fire for serious errors in its articles generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI). The Men's Journal, which is published by The Arena Group, came out with its first AI-generated article — "What All Men Should Know About Low Testosterone," which had a byline of "Men’s Fitness Editors." According to a report by Futurism on Thursday (February 9), the article shared a cornucopia of medical claims, nutrition and lifestyle advice. The article also suggested a specific medical treatment in the form of testosterone replacement therapy.

Like much content generated by AI, the story was written with the confident authority of an actual expert. It also had academic citations and a disclosure that it was reviewed and fact-checked by the editorial team.

However, the errors were discovered on a closer inspection. Bradley Anawalt, the chief of medicine at the University of Washington Medical Center told Futurism that the story had persistent factual mistakes and mischaracterisations of medical science which provide readers with a profoundly warped understanding of health issues. Anawalt said the story had many inaccuracies and falsehoods.

"It lacks many of the nuances that are crucial to understand normal male health," he added. Anawalt also pointed out 18 specific errors he found in the story, some about basic medical topics while others claimed sweeping links between diet, testosterone levels, and psychological symptoms.

"There is just enough proximity to the scientific evidence and literature to have the ring of truth," the chief of medicine at the UW Medical Center told Futurism, while adding, "But there are many false and misleading notes."

Last week, The Arena Group announced its magazines would start to publish AI-generated articles and chief executive officer (CEO) Ross Levinsohn assured that this practice would not result in a decline in quality. But this claim is now debatable.

The Futurism report said that the Men's Journal had been through difficult times. In 2020, the magazine’s owner at the time had laid off its entire editorial staff. The Arena Group only bought the magazine in December last year, and its staff page shows only five employees, two of whom are part-time.

After Futurism reached out to the group and the magazine about the issues, several changes started to appear in the testosterone article, with various errors pointed out by Bradley Anawalt corrected.

A message also appeared at the bottom of the story which said, "The original version of this story described testosterone replacement therapy as using ‘synthetic hormones’ and stated poor nutrition as one of the most common causes of low T, which are inaccurate."

However, there were additional changes that were not mentioned in the above note including a claim about the health risks of milk that Anawalt had flagged. After the story was rewritten, a spokesperson from the group sent a statement to Futurism which read, "Along with many media companies, we are exploring various AI software that can be additive to our editorial teams' workflow."

"An initial pilot collating previously published archival content demonstrated the potential of AI coupled with editors and writers. These early experiments are a work in progress. Based on these learnings and ongoing monitoring, we will continue to refine our use of these tools as part of our workflow, which has been and will always be anchored in editorial oversight," the statement added.

On being asked if The Arena Group was responsible to publish health advice that needed to be almost completely rewritten and whether it was confident accuracy of the rest of the bot’s stories and also if it had plans to continue publishing AI content, the statement said, "Confident, yes, but no immediate plans."

American magazine faces criticism for several factual errors in its AI-generated article: Report

The United States administration said on Thursday (February 9) that it was investigating Elon Musk's Neuralink- a brain implant company over the potentially illegal movement of hazardous pathogens. A spokesperson from the Department of Transportation informed news agency Reuters about the investigation after the Physicians Committee of Responsible Medicine (PCRM) wrote to Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg to alert it of records it obtained on the issue.

The PCRM, which is an animal-welfare advocacy group, said it had obtained emails and other documents which suggested unsafe packaging and movement of implants removed from the brains of monkeys. The PCRM added that these implants may have carried infectious diseases in violation of federal law.

On Thursday, the Department of Transportation spokesperson told Reuters that the above allegations levelled by the PCRM should be taken very seriously. "We are conducting an investigation to ensure that Neuralink is in full compliance with federal regulations and keeping their workers and the public safe from potentially dangerous pathogens," the spokesperson added.

Neuralink is developing a brain implant which it hopes would help paralysed people walk again and cure other neurological ailments. The PCRM has raised concerns about this company of Elon Musk in the past. In December last year, Neuralink had been under a federal investigation over potential animal welfare violations, and some of its employees made internal complaints about experiments being rushed which caused needless suffering and deaths.

As per documents cited by the PCRM, incidents which involved potential breaches of hazardous material transportation regulations happened in 2019, when the company relied on the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) to help carry out its experiments on primates. Neuralink's partnership with UC Davis ended a year later (in 2020).

However, the PCRM said that Elon Musk's company continued to employ the neurosurgeon who oversaw experiments and other staff involved might also still be employed.

A letter by PCRM said that pathogens were carried on removed from monkeys after improper sanitisation and packaging. It added these pathogens could cause serious health problems in human beings including severe brain damage and pneumonia. The PCRM did not identify any harm as a result of these above incidents but pointed out that Neuralink's actions might pose a serious and ongoing public health risk, Reuters reported.

The animal-welfare advocacy group further said that it found instances that appeared to describe UC Davis employees urging immediate biohazard training for Neuralink employees following incidents which caused contamination concerns. In one such case in 2019, an employee in the university wrote in an email that the university's primate centre was “at risk” for “monkey-contaminated hardware.”

Also in 2022, PCRM wrote to federal officials about the alleged animal-welfare issues during Neuralink's research partnership with the University of California, Davis, citing a set of records it obtained. Reuters had earlier reported that a prosecutor in the Northern District of California had referred the PCRM's complaint to the inspector general of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), which later launched the federal investigation.

In one such case in 2019, an employee in the university wrote in an email that the university's primate centre was “at risk” for “monkey-contaminated hardware.” Also in 2022, PCRM wrote to federal officials about the alleged animal-welfare issues during Neuralink's research partnership with the University of California, Davis, citing a set of records it obtained. Reuters had earlier reported that a prosecutor in the Northern District of California had referred the PCRM's complaint to the inspector general of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), which later launched the federal investigation. Morning news brief: Turkey-Syria quake toll tops 21K, Russian escalation in eastern Ukraine, & more

Sergei Furgal, a former governor of Khabarovsk in Russia, was on Friday (February 10) sentenced to 22 years in prison for allegedly organising two murders. Speaking to the news agency AFP, a spokesperson for the Moscow Regional Court said that Furgal, 52, was sentenced for attempted murder and organising the killing of two businessmen in Russia's far east nearly 20 years ago. His lawyers, meanwhile, said, that they would appeal the sentencing and seek his acquittal.

"We consider the sentence to be passed unlawfully. Today, the judge had a final chance (to influence the sentence). According to the law, he had the right to reject the jury's verdict, acquit or dismiss the jury and schedule a new court hearing. Moreover, this decision could have not been appealed. The judge, Gennady Alexeyevich Tsoi did not avail himself of that right. In fact, he confirmed an unlawful – we can say it now – jury verdict," Boris Kozhemyakin, a lawyer for Furgal, said, reported Reuters.

Earlier in February, a jury found Furgal guilty of organising two murders and one attempted murder. A member of the nationalist Liberal-Democratic Party, Furgal won a surprise election victory in 2018 when he rode a wave of anti-Moscow sentiment to oust a sitting pro-Kremlin governor.

In July 2020, Furgal was arrested while he was serving as Khabarovsk's governor and his detention sparked massive protests in the city. Tens of thousands of people in Khabarovsk to the streets for weeks before the rallies eventually stopped. Smaller protests took place in nearby cities and towns, including Komsomolsk-on-Amur and the Pacific port of Vladivostok in the next-door Primorsky Krai region, the AFP report said.

Furgal's supporters called for a fair trial for him and not in Moscow, where he has been held since his arrest. The report added that the protests were unprecedented for almost any Russian city outside Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

The supporters also said that the charges were politically motivated to punish him for taking too independent a line from Moscow.

To a specific query, Jaishankar said that five Indian nationals obtained citizenship of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during the last three years. The foreign minister also provided a list of 135 countries whose citizenship Indians acquired, a report by news agency PTI said.

Meanwhile, in response to a separate question, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said on Thursday that the Narendra Modi led-central government was aware of professionals having been laid off by US companies in recent months.

"Of these, a certain percentage is likely to be Indian nationals on H-1B and L1 visas. The Government of India has consistently raised issues relating to the movement of high skilled workers, including IT professionals, with the US government," Muraleedharan told the Rajya Sabha. The minister added that the government had been working with various stakeholders, including industry organisations and business chambers on the above issues.

Boran Kubat, a 20-year-old student from Nişantaşı University in earthquake-ravaged Turkey, was pulled from beneath the debris after sharing his location through a video status on WhatsApp. Kubat and his family were buried under the rubble of an apartment block in their hometown Malatya. "Whoever sees this WhatsApp status, please come and help. Please everyone come and rescue us now," Kubat said in the video, a TikTok post by Vice World News showed. Kubat said that his mother's condition was okay and that they were under the rubble in Efruz Apartments on the second floor. "I can't hear my uncle very well," the 20-year-old added. Emergency services were able to locate Kubat and he was rescued along with his mother. However, his uncle and grandmother were still under the rubble. Kubat said that his family was caught in the first earthquake after he went to bed at night. "We were caught asleep in both earthquakes. It suddenly shook, I lowered my head as soon as I opened my eyes. I saw my mother fall next to me," the Nişantaşı University student said adding his phone fell next to him and he immediately grabbed it and called his friends. "I thought that if I share it on social media, if all my friends see it, all of them would come," he told the news agency. Kubat said that he was under the rubble for five-and-a-half to six hours and that his friends used a sledgehammer to hit the exact spot on the debris and find him and his family. He added that his friends found him after four-five hits. Boran Kubat's ordeal is one of many such stories in Turkey and Syria, where people, trapped under the debris, finally made it out alive. A few days back, a seven-year-old Syrian girl was seen protecting her little brother as the siblings were trapped under the rubble of their collapsed house. They were rescued after 17 hours. In Syria, a baby was born under the remains of a collapsed building. The mother gave birth under the rubble but passed away shortly. A video which has been doing rounds on social media showed a rescuer running with the newborn in his arms. The baby girl was named Aya, which means miracle in Arabic. Aya's father and four siblings also died. Thousands of people expressed their willingness to adopt her. Aya is currently hospitalised.
