The Pakistan government has formed a joint investigation team to step up the pace of the probe into last month's crash of a PIA aircraft in Karachi that killed 98 people.

The joint investigation team (JIT) was constituted on Friday, comprising officials from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), to probe the accident involving an aircraft of the national carrier, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). The accident was one of the worst in Pakistan's aviation history.

"The three-member JIT headed by FIA Immigration Lahore Additional Director Imran Yaqoob, is tasked to finalise the matter on top priority and submit the report to the government at the earliest," an FIA official told PTI.

The official said the JIT has been constituted in compliance with the Senate Committee on Interior which took note of the plane crash and asked the government to constitute a high-power committee.

A four-member team of the Aircraft Accident and Investigation Board (AAIB) led by Air Commodore Muhammad Usman Ghani has already been investigating the crash of Flight PK-8303.

Besides, a French team also visited Pakistan to conduct an independent probe and collected evidence from the crash site as well as inspected the runway.

A 13-year-old girl who was injured on the ground later succumbed to her injuries, taking the death toll in the incident to 98.

The Senate Committee has recommended that the FIA office in Lahore should examine if the engineering branch of the PIA at Lahore was being maintained as per the given international standards and how many times the small components of the aircraft involved in the accident had been made/repaired from local companies/workshops.

The Committee said it was felt that the maintenance system of aircraft had been deteriorating day by day and becoming irresponsible which was visibly noted over the past few tragic incidents.

"All aircraft of PIA should be retested, overhauled and the maintenance must be done by PIA and the certificates with responsibility be given before bringing the aircraft on the runway to avoid such incidents in future, following internationally acknowledged air safety rules to make Pakistani airspace safest for flying," it said.

It also called for a detailed record of the maintenance of the crashed aircraft.

"It is reported that error was being shown on the cockpit of the plane. Who was the authorised officer to sign the clearance certificate of the said plane? Was the clearance certificate also signed by the Captain?&nbsp;This plane remained under dry lease to China and what was its condition when this plane was received back from China?" the Senate Committee questioned.

It further said that Capitan Sajjad Gul, who was operating the flight, made three Mayday calls requesting the ground staff that there was an error in the plane but his three emergency calls for emergency response could not convince the ground staff to respond. "Who was the staff member on the ground who declared the said emergency call as a light one?"

It said that one could visibly see that both engines of the plane were on fire. While the plane successfully reached Karachi, the shutting of both engines of the plane was reported by the pilot. If the engines were shut, how did the engines catch fire?

The committee questioned that if the captain was apprehensive that both engines were shut and landing gear was stuck, then why was he not allowed to belly land immediately after his first call if the facility was available at the Karachi Airport?

This is the first major aircraft crash in Pakistan after December 7, 2016 when a PIA ATR-42 aircraft from Chitral to Islamabad crashed midway. The crash claimed the lives of all 48 passengers and the crew.

The number of coronavirus cases in Bangladesh has increased by 3,471 to 81,523 in the past 24 hours, the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control And Research confirmed on Friday amid relaxed coronavirus-related restrictions.

Sri Lanka on Saturday announced further relaxation of the curfew, imposed as part of the COVID-19 lockdown, from next week.

The commission last month informed the apex court that the polls cannot be held on June 20 because of the raging coronavirus pandemic. The new date, announced on Wednesday, was decided following a unanimous decision reached between the members of the election commission.

Meanwhile, the government plans to resume operation of international airports from August 1. 
Religious places have been allowed to re-open for services. All zoological gardens and national parks would be reopened from June 15.

According to health authorities, since April 30 no new COVID-19 case from the community has been detected. All the patients tested positive for the coronavirus from April 30 onwards were either those who were in the quarantine centres, Navy personnel or their close contacts.

Eight people were killed in an attack on a clinic in Afghanistan's eastern Khost province, district police spokesman Adil Haidar said Saturday.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, which took place in the Alisher district Friday night.

Some researchers studied this situation and conducted a research on the effect that this self-isolation can have on people.

UCL researchers based at the Wolfson Institute and the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre researched on how while the isolation period can bring up loneliness, it can also&nbsp;result in a decreased desire for social interaction.

To understand the paradox, the researchers&nbsp;investigated social behaviour in Zebrafish, a freshwater fish. The researchers chose Zebrafish as most&nbsp;of them demonstrate pro-social behaviour, but approximately 10 per cent are `loner` fish. These loner fishes show different brain activity than the pro-social Zebrafish.

It has also been observed that on a usual basis too, Zebrafish&nbsp;avoid social interaction after a period of isolation.

The researchers tried to test, through this research, if the pro-social behaviour Zebrafish mimic the behaviour of the loner fish, or does it depend on the circumstances.

To test the theory,&nbsp;the researchers isolated typically social zebrafish from other fish for a period of two days and then compared their brain activity to zebrafish, who demonstrated aversion to social interaction without having been isolated.

The isolated fish demonstrated sensitivity to stimuli. It showed increased activity in the areas of brain related to anxiety and stress. However, the activity settled quickly after a dose of an anti-anxiety drug.

The difference between the social and the loner Zebrafish was observed in the&nbsp;hypothalamus, the region of the brain responsible for social rewards.&nbsp;

The loner fish did not show&nbsp;the same pattern of activation during social exposure as the pro-social behaviour one. This proved that the loner fish did&nbsp;not experience rewards in the same way as typical fish during social interactions.

"A detailed view of the zebrafish brain can provide important clues for all of us currently experiencing the effects of social isolation," said Dr Elena Dreosti.

"Our understanding of the neural mechanisms of social behaviour are limited, but we do know that zebrafish and humans share a fundamental drive for social interaction that is controlled by similar brain structures," Dreosti added.

Although the researchers admit that the human brain and behaviour is much more complex, this study does provide an insight that the&nbsp;humans won't be loners after the lockdown, but will be anxious upon returning to normal social lives.

The research has been conducted by&nbsp;PhD students Hande Tunbak and Mireya Vazquez-Prada, Postdoctoral Research Fellow Thomas Ryan, Dr Adam Kampff and Sir Henry Dale Wellcome Fellow Elena Dreosti, and was published&nbsp;in eLife.

Savungaz Valincinan, an ethnic Bunun from central Taiwan, detailed the difficulty the&nbsp;indigenous Taiwanese faced, in the past and present,&nbsp;who make up less than 3 per cent of the island's population, and call for broad opposition to any form of discrimination.

She made it clear that the discrimination faced is not as bad as the African American community in the US, however, it still hurts and is unjust.

She alleged that the indigenous Taiwanese have to face discrimination when it comes to renting a house, or the usage of their language.

"We don't want any special treatment. What we want are the most basic rights that we deserve as human beings. We are coming out today to support this movement not because of sympathy - it is because we have also gone through the hurt of being discriminated against," she said.

In wake of increasing number of coronavirus cases and lack of available beds for patients, the Delhi High Court&nbsp;ordered the Delhi government to arrange more number of beds and ventilators in the hospitals.

"Considering the gravity of the situation, we hereby direct the respondents (Centre and Delhi government) to increase the number of the beds for COVID-19 patients and also try to increase the number of ventilators so that all COVID patients in need can get this facility," the court said.

"We also direct the concerned respondent authorities to look into the suggestions given by the Delhi Medical Association (DMA) vide their press release dated 06.06.2020. These suggestions may also be kept in mind whenever the respondents are formulating their policy decisions," the order said.

"A suggestion has been given by Mridul Chakravarty, counsel for the petitioner and we also appreciate the suggestion that there are `ready to move in` government flats available in the city of Delhi, which may be utilised by the COVID hospitals for putting such infrastructure like beds, etc to accommodate COVID patients," the court added.

The Bench said they are hoping the Delhi government will comply to the guidelines and suggestions issued by the High Court. The&nbsp;counsel of the Delhi government assured the bench that the government was following all the guidelines, suggestions and intimations provided to the government by experts, court and the&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.

The Commission has proposed a 750-billion euro recovery fund to help kickstart growth on the continent, which will be debated by EU leaders next week. Italy is set to be the largest beneficiary, based on the Commission's proposed criteria for distributing the cash, expecting some 170 billion euros from the new fund. Von der Leyen said that "with the right reforms", Italy can make the most of the EU funds, pointing to promises made by Conte to cut red tape, reform the country's tax system and deliver a more effective judicial system. The EU also wants guarantees that countries will spend EU money in line with the bloc's priorities to shift to a greener economy and improve digital infrastructure.
