A 30-year-old man was arrested in New Hampshire for sending threatening messages to Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy ahead of a scheduled campaign event.

The perpetrator, who was arrested on Saturday (Dec 9), was identified as Tyler Anderson. He was charged with sending a threat using interstate commerce.

He was produced before the court on Monday (Dec 11) where he remained silent other than telling the judge he understood the proceedings. A detention hearing was scheduled for Thursday.

<h2>Ramaswamy expresses gratitude for swift action&nbsp;</h2>

A spokesperson for Ramaswamy said that the texts were directed at his campaign, in which Tyler had threatened to assassinate the Republican leader ahead of his event.

“We are grateful to law enforcement for their swiftness and professionalism in handling this matter and pray for the safety of all Americans,” Stefan Mychajliw, deputy communications director, said in a statement.

Ramaswamy also expressed his gratitude to law enforcement agencies for their swift action.

“I'm grateful for the team that's around us and they've been doing a great job in making sure that I'm kept safe," he said.

According to court documents, the man received a text message from the candidate’s campaign on Friday notifying him of Monday’s breakfast event in Portsmouth.

In response, the campaign staff received two text messages, one threatening to shoot Ramaswamy in the head, and the other threatening to kill everyone at the event and desecrate their corpses.

The FBI said they zeroed in on the man&nbsp;by tracing his cellphone number, following which the agents landed at the man’s home on Saturday and arrested him.

<h2>Accused can be sent to prison for up to 5 years&nbsp;</h2>

The texts were found in a deleted folder, the FBI affidavit said.

According to the affidavit, the man, during the interrogation, told the FBI that he had sent similar texts to “multiple other campaigns”.

The document also includes a screenshot of texts threatening a mass shooting in response to an invitation to see a candidate “who isn’t afraid to tell it like it is.”

In a bid to “fix the broken immigration system”, Australia said on Monday (Dec 11) that it is restricting the intake of international students and low-skilled workers by tightening the visa rules.

While announcing the decision, Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil said in a statement ahead of the formal release of the government’s strategy that the move is expected to halve its migrant intake over the next two years.

“We’ve worked around the clock to strike the best balance in Australia’s migration system,” Clare O’Neil said.

“The government’s targeted reforms are already putting downward pressure on net overseas migration, and will further contribute to this expected decline,” O’Neil said.

The decision comes after net immigration was expected to have peaked at a record 510,000 in 2022-23. Official data showed it was forecast to fall to about a quarter of a million in 2024-25 and 2025-26, roughly in line with pre-Covid levels, reports Reuters news agency.

O’Neil said the increase in net overseas migration in 2022-23 was mostly driven by international students.

<h2>Mired in&nbsp;bureaucratic problems</h2>

The Albanese government have been trying to overhaul the immigration system as it continues to get mired in bureaucratic problems.

For example, the occupation codes used on the back end of Australia's migration, tax and other systems have not been added since 2013.

Australia announces stricter visa rules for students, workers as it prepares to overhaul immigration system

With the stormy Indian Parliament winter session ongoing, the country's Supreme Court is set to deliver its verdict on the validity of the scrapping of Article 370 of the Constitution. The Indian government on 5 August 2019 abrogated Article 370 of the Consitution and completed the reorganisation of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, namely Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

Decoding Article 370: Indian top court to deliver verdict today

After 16 days of hearing, the Indian Supreme Court in a unanimous ruling upheld the Narendra Modi government’s decision in 2019 to scrap Article 370 of the Indian Constitution that had guaranteed special autonomous status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

It also declared valid the central government’s move to carve out a separate union territory of Ladakh from Jammu and Kashmir in August that year.

While pronouncing the verdict on Monday (Dec 11), Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said the top court came out with three judgements in response to a cluster of petitions filed against the government.

The three judgements pertained to.

1) Whether substitution of ‘constituent assembly’ by legislative assembly by using Article 370(1)(d) was valid.

2) Whether the Presidential rule imposed in December 2018 and subsequent extensions valid, and;

3) Whether the J&amp;K Reorganisation Act bifurcating the state into two Union Territories was constitutionally valid.

But before delving into the judgement, let’s see what Article 370 was.

<h2>What was Article 370?</h2>

Article 370 gave Jammu and Kashmir its own Constitution and decision-making rights for all matters barring defence, communications and foreign affairs. Its removal ended the special status to the state.

Contained within Article 370 was Article 35A, which allowed the erstwhile state to define who it acknowledged as permanent residents and gave special rights, such as government jobs and owning property.

However, as mentioned in the constitution, and pointed out by the court during the judgement, Article 370 was a temporary measure.

In 1951 a Constitution Assembly was elected for Jammu and Kashmir to formulate the constitution of Jammu and Kashmir within the ambit of Indian Constitution, and ‘subjects in respect of which the state should accede to the Union of India.'

And it was understood that this Assembly would have the authority to determine the future course of Article 370.

<h2>Validity of legislative assembly and president’s proclamation</h2>

In the 2019 Presidential orders, Parliament brought a provision giving new meaning to “constituent assembly of Jammu and Kashmir”, to mean “Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir”, and then assumed the powers of the Legislative Assembly through President's rule to revoke Article 370.

The petitioners objected to it asking whether these actions could be taken by the Union assuming powers of the state when it is under President’s rule.

The top court upheld the proclamations by referring to the landmark 1994 ruling in ‘SR Bommai v Union of India’ which dealt with the powers and limitations of the Governor under President’s rule.

CJI DY Chandrachud said that the governor (President in J&amp;K’s case) can assume “all or any” roles of the state legislature and such action must be tested judicially only in extraordinary cases.

Citing an interpretation of the Bommai ruling, the SC said that there is “no prima facie case that the President’s orders were malafide or extraneous exercise of power.”

"The J&amp;K constituent assembly was not intended to be a permanent body. It was formed only to frame the Constitution. The recommendation of the Constituent Assembly was not binding on the President," said Chief Justice Chandrachud.

<h2>J&amp;K’s sovereignty &nbsp;</h2>

While delving into the topic of Jammu and Kashmir having a special status which allowed it to enjoy autonomy within the federal structure of the Indian political system under Article 370, the Supreme Court held that J&amp;K did not retain any element of sovereignty after its accession to India in 1947.

“The state of Jammu and Kashmir does not have internal sovereignty different from other states. Whether Jammu and Kashmir retained an element of sovereignty or internal sovereignty when it joined the Union of India, we have held no,” CJI said.

During the rule of Maharaja (king) Hari Singh, the erstwhile ruler of the princely Jammu and Kashmir state, he proclaimed that he would retain his sovereignty, the court said.

However, his successor Karan Singh issued another proclamation that the Indian Constitution would prevail over all other laws in the state, it noted.

The court ruled that the subsequent proclamation had the effect of a merger like every other princely state that had joined India.

The court concluded that Jammu and Kashmir has always been an integral part of India, with CJI Chandrachud citing Section 3 of the J&amp;K Constitution itself, apart from Article 1 and 370 of the Indian Constitution.

Article 3 of the J&amp;K Constitution reads: “The State of Jammu and Kashmir is and shall be an integral part of the Union of India.”

While delivering its judgement, the bench said it took a textual reading of the historical context for the inclusion of Article 370 and the placement of Article 370 in Part XXI of the Constitution dealing with temporary provisions.

“We hold that Article 370 is a temporary provision. It was introduced to serve transitional purposes to serve an interim process. It was for a temporary purpose because of war conditions in the State. Textual reading also shows it is a temporary provision and thus it was placed in part 21 of the Constitution,” Justice Chandrachud said.

A bench of Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan had earlier directed the central government to decide the representation of the petitioner, who had originally contended that action should be taken against the actors and dignitaries who were given high-profile awards but were advertising for 'gutka' companies.

The petitioner argued that a&nbsp;representation was made to the government on October 22, but no action was taken in the matter.

In response to the petition, the high court issued notice to the Cabinet Secretary of the central government.

Following this, on Friday, Deputy Solicitor General SB Pandey informed the High Court that the Centre had issued showcause notices to Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, and Ajay Devgn.

The court was also informed that Amitabh Bachchan had sent a legal notice to a 'gutka' company, which was showing his advertisement despite the fact that he had already cancelled his contract with it, PTI news agency reported.

Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar served notices over controversial tobacco ad

The Indian Navy is reportedly mulling to acquire domestically manufactured swimmer delivery vehicles, also known as underwater chariots and midget submarines, in a bid to modernise and bolster the capabilities of its Marine Commandos (MARCOS)—a special force of the Navy modelled on the US Navy Seals.

The Indian Express newspaper, quoting defence sources, said these chariots will be powered by lithium-ion batteries. It will be able to carry a crew of six members.

It is understood that they have currently ordered prototypes, and after proper testing, they will acquire a few dozen.

According to reports, the navy is in consultation with the manufacturers to design a prototype as per their expectations.

As the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) close in on one of Hamas co-founders Yahya Sinwar, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that it was “only a matter of time” for them to find the 61-year-old, who is believed to be the architect of the October 7 surprise assault.

Hours after the IDF confirmed that it “launched a combined attack on Khan Younis city, against the centres of gravity’ of the Hamas terror organisation”, the Israeli PM assured that they will wipe out the terror organisation.

"Last night I said that our forces could go anywhere in the Gaza Strip. They are currently surrounding Sinwar's house,” Netanyahu, who is fondly called Bibi, said.

“His home is not his castle, and he can flee, but it is only a matter of time until we find him," Netanyahu added.

<h2>Hiding in southern Gaza&nbsp;</h2>

According to reports, Sinwar was last located to be at number five street in northwest Khan Younis. The IDF said they have the traditional house completely surrounded.

The development on Sinwar's location came a week after IDF Chief-of-staff Herzi Halevi hinted at the man's whereabouts.

"We are asked frequently about the destruction in Gaza - Hamas is the address. Sinwar is the address," Halevi said.

Israel said that their operation in southern Gaza has been focused on weeding out the top Hamas leaders, and declaring Sinwar as "a dead man walking".

Israel military also believe that many other top Hamas officials and several of the hostages left are hiding in Khan Younis, the largest city in southern Gaza.

<h2>Who is Sinwar?</h2>

Sinwar is considered to be the de facto leader of Hamas in Gaza, since the group's political chief stays mostly in Qatar and Turkey.

Born in the Khan Younis refugee camp, the 61-year-old was elected as Hamas' leader in Gaza in 2017.

He spent more than two decades behind bars in Israel, before being freed 12 years ago in a deal his brother helped negotiate.

In early October, Sinwar outsmarted Israel with the same hostage-taking tactic — resulting in Israel's deadliest day on record.

He was arrested in 1988 and was sentenced to consecutive life terms accused of planning the abduction and murder of two Israeli soldiers and the murder of four Palestinians.
