The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released the complete list of films eligible for the 2026 Oscars in three major categories -- documentary feature, international feature and animated feature, according to The Hollywood Reporter. According to the Academy, 201 documentary features, 86 international films, and 35 animated titles have qualified for consideration this year. The number of eligible documentaries is among the highest in recent years, second only to the pandemic cycle when rules were temporarily relaxed and 238 titles made the cut. This year's documentary lineup features several titles that have already gained traction on the festival and awards circuit, including Netflix's The Perfect Neighbor and Apocalypse in the Tropics, Apple's Come See Me in the Good Light, and Neon's Orwell: 2+2=5. Films made by well-known names about their own families -- such as HBO's My Mom Jayne by Mariska Hargitay and Apple's Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost by Ben Stiller -- are also among the qualifiers. Multiple projects linked to the ongoing Middle East turmoil have also made the list, including Torn: The Israel-Palestine Poster War on New York City Streets, Coexistence, My Ass!, Holding Liat and Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk. One notable omission is The Eyes of Ghana, directed by two-time Oscar winner Ben Proudfoot. The film is still without distribution, and a decision has reportedly been made to save it for next awards season. Other expected contenders missing from eligibility include Sofia Coppola's Marc by Sofia and Questlove's Sly Lives, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In the international feature category, Neon is distributing five widely-praised national submissions -- Norway's Sentimental Value, Brazil's The Secret Agent, South Korea's No Other Choice, Spain's Sirat and France's It Was Just an Accident, which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. Although the film was directed by Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, France submitted it owing to its largely French backing, while Iran chose Cause of Death: Unknown. Other high-profile international entries include Japan's Kokuho, Iraq's The President's Cake, Belgium's Young Mothers and Taiwan's Left-Handed Girl. Some countries have opted to submit documentaries in this category as well, such as Ukraine's 2000 Meters to Andriivka, North Macedonia's The Tale of Silyan and Denmark's Mr. Nobody Against. The animated feature list comprises several box-office heavyweights, led by Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Infinity Castle, now the highest-grossing Japanese film in history. Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters, Neon's critically acclaimed Arco and Disney's upcoming Zootopia 2 are also in contention. Expected contenders not included this year are Ne Zha 2, Paddington in Peru and Smurfs, which either didn't meet submission rules or failed eligibility checks. The Academy will shortlist films in the documentary and international categories before nominations. Shortlist voting is scheduled for December 8-12, 2025, with the lists to be revealed on December 16. Nominations across all categories will be decided from January 12-16, 2026, and announced on January 22, 2026, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Dhanush and Aanand L Rai are back together with 'Tere Ishk Mein', the spiritual sequel of the superhit film 'Raanjhanaa'. The actor candidly discussed the complexities behind two of his most talked-about characters, Kundan from 'Raanjhanaa' and his upcoming role as Shankar in 'Tere Ishk Mein', describing them as emotionally demanding roles that require deep preparation. Recalling how filmmaker Aanand L Rai and his co-star Kriti Sanon once told him he had "the face of a heartbroken man," Dhanush said he chose to take the remark as a compliment, acknowledging how it aligned with Kundan's internal conflict. Legendary actor Anupam Kher expressed his delight and gratitude as his directorial film 'Tanvi The Great' got screened at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. Starring debutant Shubhangi Dutt in the lead role, Tanvi The Great centres around the Indian Army and autism. The story follows a young girl (Shubhangi Dutt) who lives with her mother and her grandfather (Kher) and is determined to join the armed forces, inspired by the memory of her late father. The film also features Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff, Karan Tacker, Arvind Swami, Nasser, and British actor Iain Glen in pivotal roles. Speaking to the media, Kher said he was overwhelmed by the continued response to the film. "It's fantastic to have this film in two sections in the same film festival. Interestingly, the film is running in its ninth week in 21 theatres across India. For me, it is important to believe in something strongly enough to try again if needed. That's always been my journey," he said. He recalled his own struggles early in his career. "For my first film (Saaransh) with Mahesh Bhatt, I rehearsed for six months. But ten days before the shoot, I was thrown out, and Sanjeev Kumar sir was taken. I fought my way back, got the role, and the rest is history, 41 years later, 549 films. I wanted to bring the same spirit to Tanvi The Great, and I had very special people supporting the film. I've been in the industry too long to take anything lying down. I am a fighter and will always remain one," he added. With a soul-stirring soundtrack by Oscar-winner M. M. Keeravani, Tanvi The Great, the project is backed by Anupam Kher Studios in collaboration with NFDC, with global distribution managed by Excel Entertainment and AA Films. Talking about the film's music, Keeravani said, "This movie deserved this kind of music. Rhythm should play a supportive role to melody -- something rarely seen nowadays. I trusted the Kher's taste that he would let me give importance to melody, and the rest would follow. Every other hungama is only there to support the main melody, and that's what happened, and I'm very happy for that." Attending IFFI for the first time, he said he was enjoying the energy and ambience of the festival. "It's my first time here, and I love the atmosphere. There is so much life everywhere. I'm enjoying it." Shubhangi also spoke fondly about the experience of making the film. "Spending time off camera with the team was very special... Even after multiple takes, I remained completely absorbed in it. It was a beautiful moment for me personally and professionally." The film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival this year. It received a standing ovation from the celebrities and critics at the festival. 'Tanvi The Great' also had a gala screening at the New York Indian Film Festival, which was attended by Oscar winner Robert De Niro. Punjab's worsening air pollution crisis intensified on Saturday, with Lahore once again listed among the world's most polluted cities, Dawn reported. For the fourth consecutive day, thick smog enveloped major parts of the provincial capital, drastically reducing visibility and raising serious health concerns for millions of residents. Citing air quality data from IQAir, the report said Lahore's Air Quality Index AQI surged to a "hazardous" level of 577 in the early hours, placing it among the most polluted cities globally. Although the air showed marginal improvement later in the day, the metropolis was still ranked the second most polluted city worldwide. According to Dawn, AQI readings at multiple monitoring points in Lahore stood at 448 at Phase 8 DHA, 342 at Gurumangat Road, and 305 near the AC Office Shalimar Complex Wahga by 8 pm. Other cities across Punjab also reeled under severe smog conditions, the publication said. Gujranwala recorded particulate matter levels reaching 632, while Sialkot's AQI touched 462, heightening public health alarms and prompting urgent appeals from experts for precautionary measures. Environmental specialists warned that prolonged exposure to such extreme air pollution can trigger respiratory illnesses, eye and throat irritation, and could contribute to chronic health issues. Residents were urged to reduce outdoor movement, wear masks, and limit exposure as much as possible. The Pakistan Meteorological Department predicted dry weather across most districts of Punjab and cautioned that smog may continue to intensify in several low-lying areas. As smog blanketed Lahore, Dawn reported that a local group, Nawaz Sharif Lovers, launched a public awareness campaign at China Chowk, distributing masks and urging citizens to conduct vehicle emission checks and ensure they do not leave their homes without protective face coverings. Meanwhile, Punjab Police continued its anti-smog crackdown across the province and registered 28 cases over the past 24 hours. Authorities arrested violators and imposed fines totalling PKR 915,000 for breaches, including 26 incidents of crop residue burning, 227 violations related to smoke-emitting vehicles, and five cases linked to brick kilns. A police spokesperson said that during the ongoing year, 2,548 cases have been registered and 2,278 people arrested under the anti-smog enforcement drive. Penalties amounting to over PKR 192.3 million have been imposed on 91,518 individuals, while warnings were issued to 13,166 people for violations such as 1,652 cases of crop-residue burning, 54,850 vehicle-related violations, 1,407 industrial breaches, and 2,117 brick kiln-related offences. Punjab's Inspector General of Police has directed officers to intensify action on highways, agricultural zones, industrial units, and other hotspots, stressing a "zero-tolerance" policy against those defying smog-related SOPs. Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. The makers have released the trailer for 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie', the sequel to the super hit 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie'. The trailer starts out with Mario and Luigi taunting the super-small Bowser, who ate a Mini Mushroom at the end of the first movie and became the plumber brothers' puny prisoner. After Bowser paints a romantic portrait of himself and his beloved Peach and gets rejected by Mario, the real action begins. Mario and Peach see dozens of shooting stars streak across the sky, then head to the stars with Luigi and Toad. Just like the 'Super Mario Galaxy' video game, they travel through different planets, including one made entirely of water and a desert planet with upside-down pyramids (from 2017's "Super Mario Odyssey") that Mario and Luigi zoom through on bikes. The heroes face off against Bowser's son, Bowser Jr., and also meet the fierce princess Rosalina. According to Variety, Rosalina is voiced by Brie Larson, and Bowser Jr. is voiced by Benny Safdie. Just like the 2002 game 'Super Mario Sunshine,' Bowser Jr. is armed with a magical paintbrush that he uses to coat himself in metal and launch as a flail. Meanwhile, Rosalina takes down a spider-like robot all by herself using her magic wand, as shown in the trailer.

Universal Pictures shared the trailer of the picture on their Instagram handle. The film has been voiced by Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad) and Charlie Day (Luigi), who have all returned for the sequel. "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" is based on the widely popular "Super Mario Galaxy," released for the Nintendo Wii in 2007, according to Variety. The game is widely considered not only to be one of the best mainline Mario platformers, but one of the best video games of all time. While plot details for the movie remain thin, "Super Mario Galaxy" saw the titular plumber traversing the cosmos on a mission to collect enough Power Stars to allow his ship to travel to the centre of the universe, where the evil Bowser has imprisoned Princess Peach. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to hit theatres in April 2026. Released in April 2023, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" was a box office smash. The film went on to gross $1.3 billion worldwide and is currently the fifth-highest-grossing animated movie of all time behind 'Ne Zha 2,' 'Inside Out 2,' 'The Lion King' and 'Frozen II,' reported Variety.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday condemned the blast near New Delhi's Red Fort, which killed at least 12 people, while also reaffirming the ideals of peace and brotherhood which the people of Jammu and Kashmir espouse. While condemning the alleged terror attack in Delhi, CM Abdullah said that it is only a "few people who have ruined peace and brotherhood in the region," and that it is not fair to characterise every Kashmiri as being associated with terrorism. "It is highly condemnable. No religion can justify the killing of innocents with such brutality. Investigation will continue, but we must remember one thing - not every resident of Jammu and Kashmir is a terrorist or associated with terrorists. These are only a few people who have always ruined peace and brotherhood here. When we look at every resident of J&K and every Kashmiri Muslim with a single ideology and think that each one of them is a terrorist, it is difficult to keep the people on the right track," CM Abdullah told reporters here. He further called for the people responsible to be "severely punished," while also making sure that innocent people are kept out of it. Commenting on the blast accused being from a professional background, including being doctors, the Chief Minister questioned the 'security failure' which led to the blast."Have we not seen the professor of Universities before this?... Who says that educated people don't get involved in such things? They do. I am shocked by the fact that, though they were expelled from the job, what kind of investigation was undertaken after that? Why was prosecution not carried out?... We can only help the central government to keep the situation normal, and we are doing that," he said. Multiple residents of Jammu and Kashmir have been arrested for allegedly being part of a terror module which possibly planned for multiple terror attacks to be carried out across various locations. Meanwhile, fresh CCTV footage has surfaced showing the prime accused, Dr Umar Un Nabi, entering the national capital through the Badarpur border in an i20 car, further tightening the net around the accused in the ongoing blast investigation. In the footage, Umar was seen arriving at the Badarpur toll plaza, where he stops his vehicle, takes out cash, and hands it to the toll collector. Security agencies have recovered the diaries of Delhi blast case accused Dr Umar and Dr Muzammil, which mention the dates November 8 to 12, indicating that the planning was underway for such an incident during that period, sources said. According to the sources, the diary also contained the names of about 25 individuals, most of them hailing from Jammu and Kashmir and Faridabad.Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits for grammar and punctuation.
