The Antwerp Court of Appeal had earlier found that the offences attributed to Choksi were extraditable under both Indian and Belgian law, dismissing his claims of political persecution and abduction.

Fugitive diamond Businessman Mehul Choksi has approached the Belgian Supreme Court (Court of Cassation) challenging the Antwerp Court of Appeal's decision that upheld his extradition to India in connection with the multi-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, officials confirmed on Monday. According to Belgian authorities, Choksi filed the appeal on October 30 against the Antwerp court's October 17 order. The appeal, officials said, is limited to legal merits and will be examined only on points of law. "During this procedure, the execution of the extradition is suspended," an official communication clarified. The development marks the latest legal move by Choksi, who was arrested in Antwerp on April 11, 2025, following India's formal extradition request. He has since remained in custody, with several bail pleas rejected. The Antwerp Court of Appeal had earlier found that the offences attributed to Choksi were extraditable under both Indian and Belgian law, dismissing his claims of political persecution and abduction. In a detailed judgment, the court ruled that the alleged acts including criminal conspiracy, cheating, embezzlement, and forgery were punishable under the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act, as well as under corresponding provisions of the Belgian Criminal Code, satisfying the principle of dual criminality. The court, however, excluded one charge causing the disappearance of evidence under Section 201 IPC as it is not recognized under Belgian law. Rejecting Choksi's claim that the extradition request was politically motivated, the court said there were no grounds to believe that India sought his return on the basis of race, religion, nationality, or political affiliation. It also dismissed his contention that he had been kidnapped from Antigua at India's behest, observing that the documents submitted "do not support such a conclusion." The Antwerp court also took note of detailed assurances from Indian authorities regarding Choksi's treatment and medical care. India informed the court that Choksi would be held at Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai, Barrack No. 12, a 46-square-metre facility with two cells and private sanitary amenities. He would remain under the control of judicial courts and be transferred only for medical reasons or court appearances. The court concluded that no credible evidence had been presented to suggest a risk of torture, inhuman treatment, or denial of justice in India. Choksi, along with his nephew Nirav Modi, is accused of defrauding Punjab National Bank of over ₹13,000 crore, one of India's largest banking scams. With the appeal now before Belgium's top court, the extradition process remains temporarily suspended until a final decision on the matter is reached. Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin and 49 parties resolved to move the Supreme Court against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in 12 states, alleging it aims to "snatch away voting rights."

All-party meeting convened by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader MK Stalin on Sunday decided to move the Supreme Court against the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision of the voter list in 12 States and Union Territories, including Tamil Nadu. Sharing an X post, MK Stalin announced the resolution and alleged that the intent behind the SIR exercise is to snatch away the voting rights of the people. He wrote, "It is the duty of all parties to unite and raise their voices against the SIR being hastily implemented with the intent of snatching away the voting rights of the people of Tamil Nadu and murdering democracy." "Regarding the confusions and doubts in the voter list revisions - since our demand that they should be conducted after the 2026 general elections with adequate time and without any issues has not been accepted by the ECI, we have passed a resolution in today's all-party meeting to approach the Supreme Court," he added. Stalin also thanked the 49 parties which participated in the meeting to “protect democracy.” "I express my thanks to the leaders of the 49 parties who participated in the all-party meeting and registered their feelings. I request those who did not participate in this meeting to discuss SIR in their parties and take initiatives to protect democracy," the X post read. DMK leader RS Bharathi called the SIR an exercise to "indirectly" do a National Register of Citizens (NRC). He said, “We are opposing this because it is being implemented with an ulterior motive. This is not SIR. This is indirectly getting into the NRC. We are moving to the Supreme Court.” Hitting at the parties that did not participate in the meeting, Bharathi called them “the BJP's alliance.” "We don't care for them. They are all in the BJP alliance. Therefore, they didn't come," he said. DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan said, “Let the court issue its final order. After that, they can proceed with the SIR. That is what we wanted, and this is the resolution. The purpose of the resolution is that the election commissioners should not act on their own in SIR...” Slamming Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) for not attending the all-party meeting, he said, “What can we do? We had called the TVK, but they didn't come. Many parties had come, but a few didn't want to antagonise the BJP. Maybe that's why they didn't come.” CPI(M) Polit Bureau Member U Vasuki lauded the "democratic process" to draft the resolution. He said, “The original draft of the resolution was corrected after hearing the opinions and comments of other political parties. So that was a very democratic process. Through the Supreme Court, we will wage a legal battle, and we will also go to the people, because without the people's participation, nothing can be stopped. So we will approach people as part of our campaign against this.” "They have already made a decision. The BJP and AIADMK are in the same alliance. If TVK doesn't turn up for this meeting, we can understand what their political position is," she added. While the TVK did not attend the meeting, the party issued a statement, condemning the SIR exercise. "The Election Commission of India has announced that a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls will be carried out in Tamil Nadu. Earlier, when a similar announcement was made in Bihar, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) strongly opposed it and warned about its hidden motives. Just as we cautioned then, names of lakhs of voters were removed from the rolls in Bihar, with opposition parties alleging that the deletions targeted certain communities, including religious minorities. Moreover, a case related to the special intensive revision is currently pending before the Supreme Court of India," TVK said in the statement. TVK hit back at DMK for not passing a Kerala-like resolution in the Assembly against the SIR of the electoral roll in Tamil Nadu. "The Kerala Government, our neighbouring state, has passed a resolution in the Legislative Assembly opposing the special intensive revision -- a move that reflects its commitment to protecting citizens' rights. However, despite claiming to strongly oppose the SIR, the DMK has not passed any such resolution in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Why is that?" TVK asked. The Election Commission of India (ECI) will conduct the second phase of Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls across 12 States and Union Territories, with the final voter list to be published on February 7, 2026, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar said. The exercise will cover Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is hearing a case against the first phase of SIR in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections in the State. As mentioned earlier, a large collective effort was formed to make this project a success involving local self-government institutions, the Department of Local Self Government, KILA (Kerala Institute of Local Administration), Kudumbashree Mission, LIFE Mission, and departments such as Revenue, Food and Civil Supplies, Agriculture, Transport, Health, Education, Social Justice, Labour, Registration, Fisheries, Women and Child Development, Electricity, Water Resources, and Cooperation. Volunteers, social workers, the general public, and government officials all contributed through their active participation, support, and initiative. At this stage, I extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who cooperated in this endeavour." US President Trump on Truth Social announced that the two survivors of a semi-submersible “drug-carrying submarine” US destroyed in the Caribbean would be sent to Ecuador and Colombia.

US President Donald Trump said that two surviving "narcoterrorists" from a semi-submersible vessel destroyed by the US military in the Caribbean will be sent to their home countries of Ecuador and Colombia, Al Jazeera reported. "It was my great honour to destroy a very large DRUG-CARRYING SUBMARINE that was navigating towards the United States on a well-known narcotrafficking transit route," Trump wrote on Truth Social on Saturday. He said that US intelligence has confirmed the vessel was carrying fentanyl and other narcotics. The vessel was targeted on Thursday in what Trump described as a strike aimed at disrupting a major drug trafficking route. Two crew members were killed, he said, while two others survived and were airlifted by US forces in a helicopter rescue operation to a nearby US Navy warship. The US military held the survivors on board at least until Friday evening, as per Al Jazeera. The press office for Ecuador's government said it was not aware of the plans for repatriation. There was no immediate comment from Colombian authorities. The president has justified the strikes by asserting that the United States is engaged in an "armed conflict" with drug cartels. He is relying on the same legal authority used by the administration of former President George W Bush when it declared a war on terrorism after the September 11 attacks on the US. This includes the ability to capture and detain combatants and use lethal force to take out their leadership. Trump is also treating the suspected traffickers as if they were enemy soldiers in a traditional war, Al Jazeera reported. At least six vessels, most of them speedboats, have been targeted by US strikes in the Caribbean since September, with Venezuela alleged to be the origin of some of them. Washington says its campaign is dealing a decisive blow to drug trafficking, but it has provided no evidence that the people killed were drug smugglers. With Trump's confirmation of the death toll on his Truth Social platform, that means US military actions against vessels in the region have killed at least 29 people. Look at me, I'm still looking up to Salman. I look up to them because of the kinds of ups and downs they've faced, and the work they've done, starting from scratch and working their way up to this. These people are aspirational and inspirational, and somewhere I feel really thankful that I have the opportunity to sit on the same stage."</p><p><br>The 'Jawan' opened up about stardom and success in the film industry, saying, "Stardom of the level that Salman has seen, Aamir has seen, I've been fortunate enough to see, actually humbles you. And one of the biggest forces are the audience who's loving you so much."</p><p><br>Shah Rukh has been part of a series of top-grossing romantic films, including 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge', 'Dil To Pagal Hai', 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', 'Mohabbatein', 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham', 'Kal Ho Naa Ho', 'Veer-Zaara', and 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna', among others.</p><p><br>He earned critical acclaim for his role in the romantic drama 'Devdas', a NASA scientist in 'Swades', and a hockey coach in the sports drama 'Chak De! The 'Jawan' opened up about stardom and success in the film industry, saying, "Stardom of the level that Salman has seen, Aamir has seen, I've been fortunate enough to see, actually humbles you.
