Last week, the UK government imposed sanctions aimed at disrupting the funding mechanisms of the pro-Khalistan terror group Babbar Khalsa--marking the first time such measures have been applied against the organisation.

The Ministry of External Affairs on Monday welcomed the UK government's decision to impose sanctions on pro-Khalistan extremist networks linked to the banned outfit Babbar Khalsa, terming it a significant step in strengthening global efforts against terrorism and illicit financial flows. Responding to queries at the weekly press briefing, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that New Delhi appreciates London's action targeting individuals and entities involved in anti-India extremist activities. He added that such individuals pose a threat not only to India and the UK but to people across the world. "We welcome the steps that have been taken by the UK government to sanction anti-India extremist entities, which strengthen the global fight against terrorism and extremism and help to curb illicit financial flows and transnational crime networks," Jaiswal said. Last week, the UK government imposed sanctions aimed at disrupting the funding mechanisms of the pro-Khalistan terror group Babbar Khalsa--marking the first time such measures have been applied against the organisation. The UK announced an asset freeze and director disqualification against Gurpreet Singh Rehal, who is suspected of belonging to organisations involved in terrorism in India. An asset freeze against Babbar Akali Lehar, for promoting and supporting the same terrorist group, has also been announced. According to the UK Treasury Department, Rehal is involved in Babbar Khalsa and Babbar Akali Lehar's terrorist activities, including promoting and encouraging, carrying out recruitment activities for, and providing financial services to, as well as supporting and assisting those organisations, including through purchasing weapons and other military materiel. The government also said that Babbar Akali Lehar is associated with, and involved in, Babbar Khalsa's terrorist activities by promoting and encouraging and carrying out recruitment activities for the group and itself. All funds and economic resources in the UK owned, held or controlled by Rehal or Babbar Akali Lehar are now subject to an asset freeze, and Rehal is also subject to director disqualification sanctions which prohibit him from acting as a director of a company or directly or indirectly taking part in or being concerned in the promotion, formation or management of a company. During their visit to India and the UK, Andrews said that the legal team has been meeting victims families to address their concerns related to compensation, paperwork delays, and the return of personal belongings.

The lead US attorney, Mike Andrews, representing families of victims in the Air India AI171 plane crash, on Monday raised serious concerns over delayed compensation, the psychological trauma endured by families, and key technical questions emerging from the ongoing investigation. "More than 130 families affected by the tragic Air India crash have joined a collective legal action so far, with investigations continuing into the cause of the accident," Andrews said to ANI. Speaking about the condition of the families, the lawyer said, "That every day is a struggle for them as they adjust to a 'new normal'. While financial loss is visible, the emotional trauma and long-term psychological impact remain largely overlooked." Citing an example from the UK, he said a family that lost its primary breadwinner was forced to relocate due to financial hardship, and three children had to drop out of school to support the household. On the technical investigation, Andrews added that the legal team said they are closely examining flight data, electrical systems, and other technical evidence with the help of aviation experts. "They pointed to reported electrical flickering moments before the crash, possible emergency power activation, and deployment of the Ram Air Turbine (RAT), suggesting a serious electrical or hydraulic failure. They also raised concerns about possible water leaks in electronic equipment bays that may have contributed to an electrical failure," he said. The lawyer expressed keen interest in reports that investigators from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) may be travelling to Washington DC to meet officials of the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), stating that such a visit suggests the findings so far are significant. During their visit to India and the UK, Andrews said that the legal team has been meeting victims' families to address their concerns related to compensation, paperwork delays, and the return of personal belongings. They revealed that only a few families have received the announced Rs 1 crore interim compensation so far, with delays attributed to documentation and bureaucratic processes. On reports that families are being asked to sign documents releasing Boeing, GE and other entities from future liability, Andrews said that the lawyers advised families not to sign any such forms until the investigation is complete. They termed such moves as "highly improper" and said accountability cannot be determined before the root cause of the crash is established. They also clarified, "Compensation, no matter how large, can never equate to the value of a human life and that many families across different socio-economic backgrounds continue to struggle." Regarding personal belongings recovered from the crash site, the lawyer said that identifiable items may be returned sooner, while other belongings may go through a longer identification process. They added that airlines usually engage private agencies for the collection and return of such items. The lawyer urged Air India to stand firmly with the victims and their families as the investigation continues. On June 12, Air India flight AI171, crashed shortly after it took off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, killing 260 people, including 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 people on the ground. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) of India later released the preliminary report into the tragic crash, outlining the harrowing sequence of events that unfolded within 90 seconds of takeoff. It noted that both engines of the aircraft shut down unexpectedly during the initial climb, leading to a catastrophic loss of thrust and rapid descent. "I mean, first, I would say it's not the same FTA negotiation as a decade ago. It's not a continuum. So please don't read this FTA negotiation through the lens of the past," Delphin said. He said there is now "a growing sense of shared necessity and complementarity articulated by the EU and Indian leaders during the visit of the European Commission earlier this year." Delphin added that global trade tensions have increased the urgency of a predictable, rules-based framework. "Of course, there is a sharpest sense of saliency because of the tariff wars that are going on, the tariff offensive that we see. So I think it's, this is an FTA when there is more than trade," the envoy said, addressing a panel discussion. Pointing to the combined economic weight of both partners, he said, "If you think that the EU and India combined is 25 per cent of the world GDP, 25 per cent of world demography, that's nothing. So if you create an FTA between these two entities, that has a bearing. That has a bearing." Also Read: SpaceX to offer insider shares? Elon Musk clarifies amid market buzz over $800B valuation He noted the agreement would help both sides "de-risking this very fraught environment of the world economy," and emphasised that the EU's FTA record shows consistent gains for all parties. "It is a long-term benefit because the history of European FTAs with any partner, and you can check that with any partner, is a win-win. It's been mutually beneficial. Trade has grown. Jobs have grown. Investments have grown. So we are not in a zero-sum game. So call it the European art of the deal or whatever," Delphin said. Delphin said there is "a strong political commitment to conclude the FTA negotiations by the end of the year." He noted that both sides have agreed to drop the traditional approach of formal negotiation rounds. "Now we are in a continuous negotiating mode," he said. "As of tomorrow, you will have a 40 or so strong team of European negotiators coming to Delhi," he said. India and the United States are scheduled to hold trade talks in New Delhi starting December 10, government sources said on Saturday. The discussions aim to take forward negotiations on the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) between the two countries. On November 28, the chief negotiator of the deal from India, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal, had said that India is hopeful of signing the first tranche of the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement within the current calendar year. Addressing the FICCI Annual General Meeting, he indicated that talks have progressed substantially despite recent shifts in global trade conditions. Reflecting on the negotiations done so far, the Secretary said, "I think our expectations....we are very optimistic and very hopeful that we should find a solution within this calendar year." India and the US initially aimed to complete the first tranche of the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) by the fall of 2025, but new developments in the US trade policy landscape, including tariffs, delayed that goal.

The two-day negotiation session will commence on Monday and continue through Tuesday, marking another step forward in the long-standing effort to establish stronger economic ties between the EU and India.

The BJP-led NDA government has been allotted three hours for its participation in the Lok Sabha debate, while a total of 10 hours has been earmarked for the entire discussion.

The lower house of the Parliament, the Lok Sabha will hold a special discussion on December 8, to mark 150 years of Vande Mataram, during which several important, lesser-known historical facets of the iconic national song are expected to be highlighted. According to sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will initiate the debate at 12 noon on Monday, marking the formal beginning of the proceedings. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is also scheduled to speak at the conclusion of the discussion. The BJP-led NDA government has been allotted three hours for its participation in the Lok Sabha debate, while a total of 10 hours has been earmarked for the entire discussion, as the debate will also take place in the upper house, the Rajya Sabha, on Tuesday, December 9. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to open the discussion in the Upper House. These discussions are part of the special parliamentary focus on commemorating the legacy and 150 years of Vande Mataram. Meanwhile, eight leaders from Congress will also speak in the Lok Sabha, which includes Deputy Lok Sabha LoP Gaurav Gogoi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Deepender Hooda, Bimol Akoijam, Praniti Shinde, Prashant Padole, Chamala Reddy, and Jyotsna Mahant. The Winter session of Parliament commenced on December 1 and will continue till December 19. The 150th anniversary of India's National Song, Vande Mataram, which translates to "Mother, I Bow to Thee", was observed on November 7 this year. Composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, 'Vande Mataram' was first published in the literary journal Bangadarshan on November 7, 1875. Later, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee incorporated the hymn in his immortal novel 'Anandamath', which was published in 1882. It was set to music by Rabindranath Tagore. It has become an integral part of the nation's civilisational, political and cultural consciousness. PM Modi had inaugurated the year-long commemoration of 150 Years of 'Vande Mataram' in the national capital on November 7. Addressing the gathering on the occasion, PM Modi remarked that Vande Mataram is not merely a word - it is a mantra, an energy, a dream, and a solemn resolve. He highlighted that Vande Mataram embodies "devotion and spiritual dedication to Maa Bharati". The Prime Minister stated that the song connects people to the country's history, fills the present with confidence, and inspires the future with the courage to believe that no resolve is beyond fulfilment, and no goal is beyond reach. Addressing the FICCI Annual General Meeting, he indicated that talks have progressed substantially despite recent shifts in global trade conditions.
