Australia will join the United States in a diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Wednesday, as other allies weighed similar moves to protest China's human rights record.

The United States has said its government officials will boycott February's Beijing Olympics because of China's human rights "atrocities", just weeks after talks aimed at easing tense relations between the world's two largest economies.

China said the United States would "pay the price"&nbsp;for its decision and warned of countermeasures in response, but gave no details.

Morrison said Wednesday's decision came because of Australia's struggles to re-open diplomatic channels with China to discuss alleged human rights abuses in the far western region of Xinjiang and Beijing's moves against Australian imports.

Announcing the plans, Morrison said Beijing had not responded to several issues raised by Canberra, including the rights abuse accusations.

"So it is not surprising therefore that Australian government officials would not be going to China for those Games," Morrison told reporters in Sydney. Australian athletes will attend.

Bangladesh slipped to 76/7 at stumps on Day 4 of the second Test after Pakistan declared at 300/4 in their first innings, here on Tuesday. Bangladesh had a horror-filled Day Four in Dhaka as Sajid Khan, the young Pakistani spinner, ripped through the hosts` batting order and bagged six wickets. 
 
After rain played spoilsport on two consecutive days, the start of day four also got delayed due to light showers and a wet outfield. However, the match resumed after almost an hour and a half`s wait with Pakistan on 188/2, and Babar Azam and Azhar Ali were on 71 not out and 52 not out respectively. 
 
On the first ball he faced, Azhar struck a four. But two balls later, he threw away his wicket, getting caught behind after scoring 56. Shortly after, Azam followed suit, falling for 76. 
 
Thereafter, the two new batters -- Fawad Alam and Mohammad Rizwan combined for a steady stand and made sure there were not any more hiccups in the session. They batted with caution and kept the scoreboard ticking with regular boundaries. They took their side to Lunch at 242/4, with their stand worth 45 runs at the time. 
 
The two batters kept finding the ropes after the break and soon got to their respective fifties before Azam decided to declare the innings at 300/4 in an attempt to force a result in the four sessions remaining.

Despite having lost half their side, Shakib Al Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto continued to show intent and lived dangerously. The pair smashed three boundaries in a space of seven deliveries before Sajid trapped Shanto to register his maiden Test five-for.

The White House said on Monday U.S. government officials would boycott the Winter Olympics because of China`s human rights "atrocities", although U.S. athletes were free to travel there to compete. The U.S. boycott, encouraged for months by some members of Congress and rights groups, comes despite an effort to stabilise ties between the world`s two largest economies, with a video meeting last month between U.S. President Joe Biden and China`s Xi Jinping.

China opposes the boycott and would take "resolute countermeasures", foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told a media briefing in Beijing, host city of the 2008 Summer Olympics, on Tuesday. "The United States will pay a price for its mistaken acts," he said, without giving details. "Let`s all wait and see."

It was not immediately clear if other nations would join the United States, although U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken had said allies&nbsp;were consulted on a "shared approach". Canada`s foreign ministry said it "remains deeply disturbed by the troubling reports of human rights violations in China" and continues to discuss the matter with partners and allies.

Many Chinese internet users reacted to news of U.S. boycott with expressions of "good riddance". "Please don`t come, don`t bring the COVID virus variant here," a user who calls herself "Thales Beauty" commented online. Biden`s administration highlighted as the reason for its boycott what Washington calls genocide against minority Muslims in China`s far western region of Xinjiang. 
China denies all rights abuses.

"U.S. diplomatic or official representation would treat these games as business as usual in the face of the PRC`s egregious human rights abuses and atrocities in Xinjiang, and we simply can`t do that," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Monday, referring to the People`s Republic of China.
