<p>While Republican speaker nominee Kevin McCarthy failed to gain the desired votes to become the speaker, he managed to make substantial headways, after three days of monotony.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Friday afternoon, during the 12th and 13th ballots, McCarthy managed to flip 14 GOP lawmakers cumulatively who had previously not voted for him. McCarthy managed to have 214 votes in his favour while Democrat nominee Hakeem Jeffries had 212.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With two Republican leaders expected to not play any further part in the House proceedings due to personal reasons, the magical figure for McCarthy lies at 216, instead of the previous 218.&nbsp;House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was elected with the same number of votes in 2021.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Media reports suggest that McCarthy's team engaged in overnight negotiations with the rebels and even held a conference call in the morning to make the gains.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, Matt Gaetz,&nbsp;Andy Biggs, Bob Good, Lauren Boebert and Matt Rosendale remain the five Republican leaders, adamant about not voting McCarthy into power. Notably, Mccarthy, the House minority leader can only afford four Republicans to vote against him.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After being rather dormant throughout the proceedings, McCarthy finally had an air of confidence about him as he suggested that the lawmakers will get the job done tonight.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We’ll come back tonight. I believe at that time we’ll have the votes to finish this once and for all," said McCarthy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It just reminds me of what my father always told me. It’s not how you start. It’s how you finish. And now we have to finish for the American public."</p>

<p>Though McCarthy sounded optimistic, he had to make numerous concessions to the holdouts, according to several reports. McCarthy has reportedly accepted to bring back the rule that allows any member to bring the 'motion to vacate' which will trigger a vote on removing the speaker.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The notification added that TRF's activities were detrimental to India's security.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The cognizance and exercise of jurisdiction by the ECP for debarring Imran Khan from holding the office of the party chairman on the basis of alleged incorrect statement of assets and subsequent disqualification is unlawful and contrary to the constitution," said Khan in the petition filed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>US President Joe Biden is not overtly convinced by the temporary ceasefire ordered by his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Biden termed Putin's 36-hour ceasefire order an effort to find breathing room for his army.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I'm reluctant to respond to anything that Putin says. I found it interesting that he was willing to bomb hospitals and nurseries and churches on the 25th and New Year's," said Biden before adding, "I think he's trying to find some oxygen."</p>

<p>A similar sentiment was echoed by the US State Department which called Putin's ceasefire attempt 'cynical'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We have little faith in the intentions behind this announcement. If Russia were truly serious about peace, about ending this war, it would withdraw its forces from the sovereign territory of Ukraine," said spokesman Ned&nbsp;Price.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Thursday, nearly a year into the war, Putin ordered a ceasefire on January 6 and 7, surprising the rest of the world.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Citing 'Orthodox Christmas' as the reason for the truce, Kremlin released an official statement conveying its decision.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, the Russian Orthodox Church observes Christmas on January 7. Putin urged the Ukrainian side to allow citizens in the 'war region' to practice their faith without any problem.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Proceeding from the fact that a large number of citizens professing Orthodoxy live in the areas of hostilities, we call on the Ukrainian side to declare a ceasefire and allow them to attend services on Christmas Eve, as well as on Christmas Day."</p>

<p>However, akin to Biden, Ukraine wasn't too pleased with Putin's decision. Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak took to Twitter to slam the move and suggested Kremlin keep its 'hypocrisy' to itself.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"First. Ukraine doesn't attack foreign territory and&nbsp;doesn't kill civilians. As RF does. Ukraine destroys only members of the occupation army on its territory... Second. RF must leave the occupied territories - only then will it have a "temporary truce". Keep hypocrisy to yourself."</p>

<p>The US House of Representatives failed to break the deadlock for a third consecutive day to select the next speaker. The Republicans could not band together as nominee Kevin McCarthy lost the 11th ballot. The House was adjourned till noon after the motion was passed 219-213.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With the loss, the stage is set for a 12th ballot which makes it the longest-running speaker election contest in 164 years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While McCarthy managed to receive 201 votes yesterday, his tally dwindled by one on Thursday&nbsp;after Rep.-elect Ken Buck of Colorado was forced to leave the session for a medical appointment.&nbsp; He is not expected to be back till mid-day tomorrow or even later.&nbsp;</p>
